Eddie Caminetti #2

The Foursome

Rate this book
Golf fiction's finest hustler-- The Green 's Eddie Caminetti--returns in a laugh-out-loud novel featuring a foursome of upwardly mobile golf fanatics who get their just rewards.

Tired of hustling for something as ordinary as money, Eddie, in The Foursome , sets his sights slightly higher than other men's he goes after their souls. He now presides over Swithen Bairn, an exquisite secret golf course that's a kind of twisted Fantasy Island where the arrogant and pompous find their cherished dreams suddenly transformed into their worst nightmares.

Enter the foursome of the title, four enviably successful businessmen/golf junkies lured to Swithen Bairn by an irresistible "The most memorable golf vacation you ever had or you don't pay." It's been said that you can learn more about people during one round of golf than you can living next door to them for six months, and in one round with Eddie Caminetti these four hapless sinners learn more about themselves than they could have in six years of analysis. By the end of their second match, the dizzying amount of money at stake will be the least of their worries, and "memorable" won't even begin to describe this bizarre vacation.

Mixing equal parts of suspense, hilarity, and raw human drama, Troon McAllister deftly shows readers what can happen when money, friendship, ambition, and greed converge explosively in a single round of golf. As Eddie Caminetti himself puts it in The Foursome , "Why do you think they call the devil Scratch?"

About four golfing buddies offered the vacation of a lifetime at the private golf resort, Swithen Bairn. From the outset, everything is shrouded in mystery - the location of the resort (they are flown there in private jet with no windows), the actual cost of the vacation (they're only told that if it isn't the most memorable of their lives, they pay nothing), and how four supposed friends are going to make it through a week playing rounds together on this twisted Fantasy Island. The four main characters are definitely stereotypes of guys who spend their weekends on the links and their weeks thinking about their next round. They are tremendously wealthy and always looking for a way to win - whether it means fudging on their handicap or using irons made from non-regulation materials. I enjoyed the colorful characters and the general plot of this book - but it is definitely a novel for golf enthusiasts. As the foursome play their rounds, their shots are described one by one, hole by hole. I kept just wanting to know who was going to win without having to hear about who used a driver and who used a 3-wood, whose shot narrowly missed the sand-trap and who left his putt just short of an eagle. There is certainly the buiding of suspense - particularly when the foursome find themselves in over their heads in a round for cold hard cash - but I am not (yet?) a big enough golf aficianado to appreciate all the subtleties of the game, so I found myself getting a little bored. That being said, the ending is really fun - and I think this would be a great read for anyone who loves the game of golf.

This was a good story with some interesting golf tips mixed in. Could not put it down towards the end. The suspense was exciting as you wanted to see how the characters do. Nice book if you want to read about golf and how some people can get consumed by greed in today's business world.

A bit too much craziness at times, but still an entertaining read. Eddie Caminetti returns as an owner of a mysterious exclusive golf club where his goal is to save people's souls by teaching them lessons about who they really are.

second in the series...not as strong as the first but is does a lot in developing Eddie's character as a hustler.

Excellent Read

I love this author's work. Between Troon McAllister and Rick Reilly, I've read the best golf stories in the world.

Filler between the first and third Caminetti books. This wasn't very good, but not really that bad.
