I am the reincarnation of a dark god. I cannot escape that now. The prince of demons come again. And I am hunted. The Fomori have a prophecy about my return, and have been so kind as to dispatch the Morrigan herself to slay me. She's even forging a special divine sword.
Their armies of beastmen and giants march upon Hasra, and the ailing empire is in no shape to hold. They need new troops. They need us. My friends and I are being sent off to the other Catalysts we control to gain more magic so that we can resist the Fomori advance.
First we'll journey to Calmora, to gain air from the Breath of Shu. Then we will fly to Enestius to gain dream from the Hoard of Lakshmi. If we survive, then we'll move on to the strongest Catalyst on the continent, the legendary Hammer of Reevanthara.
Once we have secured our powers we'll return to the war, and break the Fomori...or die trying. I will find a way to drive them from our lands, for my family. For my people. For the darkness living inside me.
By day I am an iPhone developer architecting the app used to scope Stephen Colbert’s ear. By night I am Batman. Ok maybe not. One can dream though, right?
I’ve been writing since I was six years old and started inflicting my work on others at age 18. By age 24 people stopped running away when I approached them with a new story and shortly thereafter I published my first one in the Rifter.
Wait you’re still reading?
Ok, the facts I’m supposed to list in a bio. As of this writing I’m 38 years old and live just north of the Golden Gate Bridge in the beautiful town of Mill Valley. If you’re unsure how to find it just follow the smell of self-entitlement. Once you see the teens driving Teslas you’ll know you’re in the right place.
I live in a tiny studio that I can cross in (literally) five steps and don’t own an oven. But you know what? It’s worth it. I love developing iPhone apps and if you want to work in San Francisco you accept that rent for a tiny place costs more than most people’s mortgage.
If you and about 2 million other people start buying my books I promise to move out of Marin to a house in the redwoods up in Guerneville. No pressure. Wait that’s a lie. Pressure.
SPELLS!!! SWORDS!!!! FAN SERVICE!!!!!!!! What’s not to like?!? Shattered Gods is comparable to a very fun, clever, and unique game of D&D (yes it has its own RPG but whatever, this is for all). From all the jokes from the main characters best friend who is a rat that rides a around on his shoulder- most of the time ;) - to his arch rival that only hates him because his psycho queen mommy put a spell on him in the previous book: This book has SO MUCH FUN!!! I have read almost all of Chris’ other works and it’s really nice to see the same names and concepts be reused but still wildly entertaining! Besides all the pew pews and clang clang and twinging, there is a lot more sensual tension in this story and it really makes the story fun and keeps it fresh! I really enjoyed learning more about the Fomori as well.
If you read the first book, what are you doing? Buy it and start reading now! It gets even better!!! If not, don’t worry! There’s the handy dandy “Previously On” at the beginning of this book to recap the previous book in the absolute best possible way ever! Or go back and really FEEL that betrayal that happens so much in the first! It pays off in this one, that’s for sure.
A bit discordant, but worth a read. There is a bit of whiplash as characters hate each other and then are friends and then enemies and then all is forgiven again. Also the age/maturity level of the MC and the other central characters is bit all over the place. They’re 17? They’re seventh year students, not quite adults, definitely act like teenagers , except when they don’t. Also, they’re all totally cool with killing people. But super offended when other people do it?
I wish there was more focus on the training so we can see difficulty in accruing power. The end of “term” challenges are well defined and do show how risky and dangerous the whole process is. I guess I’m missing a sense of the characters growing to meet the challenges rather than just doing some newbie stuff for a couple scenes and then suddenly advancing in power.
But the story arc is cool and so is the world the author has built. The MC is strong, but for a reason and not just to be OP. His strength is a little more balanced than book one. I see that as a good sign. I’ll definitely read the next book
It took a while for me to get through this veritable mountain of a book. But that is more to do with my own inability to sit still long enough to read it than anything else. It was amazing, to say the least and without divulging too much of the good stuff. The ending was actually incredibly satisfying as I felt it has been earned. The only gripe I have with it is that (Spoiler alert) as the story progressed there was an almost immediate switch from one of the main... I am hesitant to say antagonists, but that's basically what he was... That felt a little confusing, it eventually made a little more sense. But all in all it was an amazing book, I actually got emotional towards the end. Despite the fact that there are like 3 other books in this series and a bunch of others as side stories.
I found that I have enjoyed this but there is a lot here that is frustrating. I will make notes as I go along. Honestly, I could do without so many additional POV's. The screentime could be on their training. Too much emphasis is put on these KIDS and how they might be able to save everything. You really have to make me believe it. Their training is being rushed, because the world is basically ending, and honestly I have a hard time getting into the idea that they would make a difference.
Kind of a hard one. The book is a good continuation but not sure why it just feels a little unsatisfying. The MC is either so week or all of a sudden the most important person in the universe and back again. People do horrible things to each other and then the next minute they are working together as a team.
All that said it is a good book. I will probably read the next one but the ending of this one makes me less excited.
The story is good but the writing needs some proof-reading. There are often inconsistencies. For example, one paragraph will say there is one airship left in the fleet, then a couple chapters later they have a large fleet, then later it will talk about how the fleet was decimated. These little things happen fairly often. That being said, it's a good overall story. I'll be reading the next book.
I was so excited for this book and it delivered and then some
Among the different books in the magitech universe, I had wondered upon the first of this series and loved it and was so sad there wasn't another to read. Now that I've completed this, I can't wait to start the next one. It was excellent, well written and a very fun story
Continuation of the Shattered Gods story. Part way through this novel I decided to look up other books by this author and discovered that there are dozens of books set in this magical universe. That explains the diving in headfirst immersion into the unexplained systems. Anyway, I enjoyed this novel also and I'm tempted to buy some of the earlier works.
It's a decent entry to the series. There were some in-consistencies. I didn't like Crispus. And I was dissatisfied with that section, of Xal's fight with Crispus. But Erik grew on me. I liked where he was going. Xal's choice at the end of the book is more interesting. Most of all, Saghir is my favourite of the series. Looking forward to the next in the series.
Cannot rave about this series enough. Brilliant worldbuilding, characters & magic system. Will definitely be recommending & cannot wait to read the third in the series.
A great book, with an engaging and entertaining storyline. Some mildly predictable, or foreshadowed events but still a great read. Can't wait for the next one. Definitely recommend giving it a read.
Because I couldn't read the book at my desk. Thus was I thwarted for 8 to 10hrs of not continuing thus masterpiece. This book was meaty and exciting....can't wait for book 3!
I can't say enough about this saga that Chris has been telling about his world, and all the kickass characters in it. I look forward to reading God of Sands next.
Another great read. Like the characters’ development. Ephram is one of my favorites. The names are great and one makes me laugh every time a new chapter uses his name in a witty way - Ducius. HEE LARRY US!
