When a roguish samurai embarks upon a mission to rescue his brother from the clutches of a fiendish feudal lord, he himself becomes a pawn of the debauched villain. Subjugation, humiliation, and passion ensue in this long-awaited epic by Kazuma Kodaka. This stand-alone melodrama is perfect for first-time yaoi readers.
Kodaka-sensei made her debut in 1989 with Sessa Takuma! in Shounen Champion. Today she is one of the most popular Boys' Love authors. She is famous for her work on designing the characters for Triple X's BL anime Boku no Sekuhara (My Sexual Harassment) and is also the beloved author of Kizuna.
Matoh Sanami taught her how to draw using a shoujo-style. Sanami Matoh and Kazuma Kodaka are actually very good friends.
While I did enjoy reading this manga, it was definitely lacking in character development. There were a lot of complex characters and relationships in this manga, but they were all just kinda glossed over. Since they didn't take the time to really build the relationships, none of them felt believable. We never really got a chance to see the relationship between Shirou and his brother, Fujimaru, so it's hard to understand why Fujimaru liked Shirou in the first place. Shirou is viewed by everyone as a demon, not only does he "look like one," but he also gets some kinda weird kick out of murdering people. Yet we are supposed to believe that his younger brother idolizes him? Why? We get one scene with them together, but it wasn't enough. If we got to see more of their relationship before and during the events of the story, Shirou could have been a more sympathetic character. But, since we don't get to see any of that, he just comes off as a bloodthirsty monster with an obsessive relationship with his younger brother. There are a lot of instances where the relationships felt forced. In fact, all the relationships felt pretty forced. I have so many questions about character motivations, but, if I wrote them all down, this review would be longer than the original story. I feel like this one had a lot of potential, but since it was so short and "told, didn't show," it was just fine. I did still enjoy it, but I think it could have been really great if it had been longer and emphasized the character's relationships.
I'm so so so disappointed in this manga. I'm a fan of Kazuma Kodaka's newer series "Border", it was one of the first BL I ever read. When I saw this in the bookstore, I was so excited! A samurai BL with attractive Bara characters? Please, give it to me. Unfortunately, I should have read the back. This story follows a roaming samurai and his brother. The samurai is a murder, he's a "bad person". One day they get ambushed by bandits and get put into sex slavery. Again, I should have done more research before buying this. One of the positive things about this manga is the art is stunning. I love Kodaka's artwork. I also liked the secondary couple in this manga: The samurai's little brother, and his lover. But even their story wasn't satisfying. This manga just made me feel gross and somewhat depressed. So, please, don't waste your time on this one. I'm so sad to say that. Read Border instead.
Loved the artistry and it's exactly what I've come to expect from Kazuma Kodaka. She's a fabulous artist and her characters are eye catching. But unfortunately, the story was very predictable and the ending blah. Midaresomenishi 'A Legend of Samurai Love' had the potential for a lot more. Shirou is what I call a modified uke. I felt he could've put up more a fight against Sougetsu (seme). He has all the attributes and is a very strong individual but basically lacks the balls. Sougetsu is just a sleaze. His character lacks depth and is out for one thing. There wasn't any major character development either. I've giving this one a 5 flame rating, due to the fact that the sex is very explicit and there are numerous rape scenes.
This was awful. Overly cliched, sex positions and body proportions that didn't work for me, just bad. The art was okay, but the MC being so self-absorbed that he was clueless about how his brother was being kept didn't fly with me. There were so many "plot points" that were glossed over as to be laughable, and then they threw in the hooker with a heart of gold at the end who couldn't tame the beast. What the hell was the point of that chapter? To fill the book?
Ugh, just not worth the time. I do NOT understand why a blog I read recommended this.
This is a Yaoi novel, meaning a Japanese graphic novel about romance between men, written for and by women. This is not a delicate Yaoi about school boys; this is a rough and brutal lemon Yaoi about Samurai. That said, it was very well done, and intriguing, if deeply disturbing. Check out my full review: Midaresomenishi: A Legend of Samurai Love
OK, so the story is not faithful to the samurai code, but this is a fantasy, after all. Judging by the 'romantic' cover illustration I expected the manga to be somewhat 'fluffy' but it is truly an intense, hard & hot story. Nice graphics as well. My favorite yaoi so far!
Kazuma Kodaka is one of my favourite artists in this genre (Yaoi) and she's a superb story teller. Midaresomenishi is brutal compared to Kizuna, but taking into consideration the era in which the story takes place and who the characters are, it's understandable.
