This was an excellent conclusion to a really fantastic series! AND we get a two-for-one deal with this book. Every Rogue Has His Charm follows two couples and I was invested in both of them getting together.
One has a sort of Beauty and the Beast vibe- the hero is badly scarred and believes himself undesirable so when he finds himself truly drawn to his new bride from a marriage of convenience, he runs off to France for several years where he serves British intelligence. She's left alone, not quite a widow but not really a wife. But now with the death of his grandfather he's the heir to a dukedom and must return. Meanwhile, two characters we've seen circle each other in previous books are sent on a mission to befriend the wife and uncover whether the new duke is still loyal to the crown. Hijinks and danger ensue!
This entire series has been a blast- strong heroines, heroes who support them, the fun of spycraft, and a match-making spymaster general trying to get his agents to their happily ever ever afters. This book is a satisfying conclusion, and we even get a party epilogue featuring all the different couples from the series! Loved it. I received an advance copy of this book for review via NetGalley. All opinions are my own.
As you may know, historical spies are some of our favorite characters. Susanna Craig's Live and Let Spy series has been one of our favorites in recent years, with all kinds of spy tropes abounding. In Every Rogue Has His Charm, a scarred marquess (and heir to a duke) marries a young lady he unwittingly compromises and then abandons her three days after the wedding. Flash forward six years and he's back in town - and he's a duke.
Luckily for the reader, Caro and Maxim don't spend any time in miscommunication. They pretty quickly disclose to each other their fears and hopes for the future. Even when they each catch the other in different sorts of compromising situations (more spy-stuff than romantic), they're able to stop and listen to each other. Plus Maxim's form of groveling (listening to his wife, respecting her wishes, AND rescuing her family in ways that are meaningful to them?!) is just perfect.
There's also a secondary romance we really liked. In fact, our only criticism of the novel is that we learned that it's the final in the series, and that Mrs. Drummond and Captain Addison won't have a full book to themselves!
27-37 Word summaries:
Laine: TBH when I started this I had Deja Vu for The Duchess Deal but then he bounced, so a whole other couple got 40% of the plot.
Meg: Maxim is emotionally & physically scarred; he doesn’t believe in love, but his wife starts to close the distance. He makes it literal by running off to France. But now that he’s back, there’s nowhere left to run…
This objective review is based on a complimentary copy of the novel.
Sorry but I disliked the voice the narrator used for Maxim and I was just never emotionally attached their relationship. The secondary romance took more room than the main one??? The heroine’s relationship with her family was also just more annoying than anything, but I never like dynamics like that so it’s not a surprise. I had high hopes for this one because the teaser at the end of book three was fun, but it was just kinda boring.
This series is two for two for me. The sex was a little disappointing. Overall, I would read more from Susanna Craig, but I don’t think I’d go out of my way.
I received an advance ebook copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for review.
Every Rogue Has His Charm by Susanna Craig is the fourth and final book of Love and Let Spy. Caroline, Marchioness of Chesleigh, got married six years ago. She hasn’t seen her husband since the early days of their marriage. Maxim is scarred and very reclusive. When he discovered he had feelings for his wife—and she had feelings for him—he ran. He resumed his life of espionage in France, believing Caro was better off without him. Feeling abandoned, Caro does whatever she can to convince herself her husband means nothing to her. When Maxim returns to inherit the Dukedom, she is surprised to see him again. He sees Caro has hardened her heart against him. But the pair cannot deny that passion they felt six years ago burns just as bright. Danger lurks as strange incidents occur as Maxim and Caro make up for lost time.
I really loved Maxim and Caro. They are both so strong and resilient in different ways that complement each other so well. I am very eager to go back and read the earlier books in this series.
What a fantastic ending to an amazing series!!! This book had everything I could ever want in a historical romance book, spies, forced marriage, a separation and a scarred hero in need of redemption. I was so glad that Caro and Maxim didn't spend time in miscommunication. I love that they were able to express their hopes and fears with each other after their separation was over.
I adore Susanna Craig's writing! She creates such wonderful characters and chemistry. The steamy parts are so passionate and full of love. She is definitely on my must read list.
I voluntarily read and reviewed a copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Every Rogue Has His Charm is a Beauty and the Beast themed romance with a twist, and the last installment of this series. It centers around Maxim, the disfigured and spymaster Duke who leaves his young bride Caro after days of their union, to "resumed his life of espionage in France", believing Caro was better off alone. After six years, Caro is no longer the young bride Maxim left behind, will she be able to forgive? Or will she cower in fear of the dangerous man and his secrets?
"Maxim." She could not make up her mind whether to comfort or to scold. "Your scars are a sign to the world that the past has shaped who you are. But you don't have to be done changing, becoming the man you could be."
What a charming little book! I throughly enjoyed Maxim and Caro's relationship. Maxim is broody yet sweet. Caro is a beauty with patience and understanding. I have not read any of the other books in the series but I feel like this could be read as a stand alone.
Not only do we get a peek of Maxim and Caro, we get another glimpse of a romance blooming - Mrs. Drummond and Fitz. Their relationship is sweet with steam. Drummond is 7 years older than Fitz! What a different trope to stumble upon - an older female with a younger male!
Grab a copy of this book, I plan on reading the rest of the series! Fast paced and delicious. Thanks to Netgalley and it's publisher for a free copy of this arc in exchange for my honest review.
While attending a house party on the behest of his spymaster, General Scott, Maximilien “Maxim” Grant, Marquess of Chesleigh, and heir to the Duke of Hartwell, finds much more than incriminating evidence against his host, he finds a wife!
Lady Caroline Brent is in the library when Maxim comes in and they are accidentally trapped and then discovered alone in the room together by her parents and the hosts. To save her, Maxim immediately proposes. But when they wed, he makes it clear that he doesn’t like her family and will not give them a penny or lift a finger to help them. Their marriage starts well, Caro doesn’t seem bothered by Maxim’s scars or his foreboding demeanor, but when he fears his feelings, he bolts, leaving Caro alone in a strange house and at the mercy of her self-serving, controlling father. To put some distance between them, Caro moves to Brighton and settles into a quiet, albeit lonely life.
Six years later, Maxim, who has been working undercover in France, gets word that his grandfather has passed and he is now the new Duke of Hartwell and must return to England to sort out the estate. Maxim believes his time away from Caro has “cured” him of his unwanted feelings and decides to go see her before going to London, just to inform her of the death of his grandfather (that is his story and he is sticking to it!). But once he sees her again, he finds it impossible to just walk away and wonders if it is possible to win her heart? However, before they can he must redeem himself with her as well as his fellow spies and his spymaster, not to mention, figure out who is trying to kill him!
I enjoyed this well-written, fast-paced, beauty and the beast themed conclusion to the series. The book has a bit of everything; intrigue, steamyish love scenes, spies, a matchmaking spymaster, a secondary love story, life and death moments, a hidden threat, a villainous father, and finally their long overdue HEA complete with an epilogue that includes everyone from the series. As much as I liked this book, I personally think that Caro forgave Maxim too quickly and that he owed her some serious groveling, but overall, it was a very good read and I would happily recommend it. This is the fourth and final book in the series, but the series is loosely connected and it could be read as a standalone title.
*I am voluntarily leaving a review for an eARC that I requested and was provided to me by the publisher. All opinions in this review are my own.*
There’s nothing like a romance to drive home the differences in opinion between you and other people, especially when it comes to forgiveness. And Every Rogue Has His Charm was very much one of those.
The general plot surrounds a second chance romance: Maxim marries Caro after finding himself in the position of having seemingly compromised her. Four days later, he abandons her and doesn’t return for six years. Fast forward those six years and he has no choice but to come home (as heir to a dukedom) when he hears about his grandfather’s passing.
As with all of the Love and Let Spy books, this was a solid read. I did, for the most part, enjoy it. The issue, I think, was the relationship between Maxim and Caro.
Maybe I am just too vindictive and spiteful and grudge-holding, but for the hurt Maxim caused Caro, he should have been on his knees and grovelling, begging for forgiveness. He was not. Instead, he tried to pretend like none of it really meant anything, up until he accepted the fact that he did care for Caro more than he thought. And then did he grovel? No he did not!
What happened then (vague spoilers here) was that his tragic backstory is revealed and suddenly, just like that, Caro is more inclined to forgive him. Frankly, this is a boring twist. Just because he was treated poorly, doesn’t give him licence to treat her poorly. I wanted her to demand more from him, instead of suddenly deciding to pity him and therefore forgive him. That was when I stopped really caring about that relationship in the book (thankfully, there was a secondary relationship I could care about, otherwise this might have been a 2 star read).
I think because of that, I never really got engaged with their relationship. I simply didn’t care about it. I actually wanted to know more about the (obvious to me) attempted murder plot, but this barely registered on page until the last 40 pages or so. Had those two things been better integrated, perhaps I’d be writing a very different review.
So, while I did just about enjoy this book on the whole, I think it’s made it clear to me that this series can be somewhat hit and miss. Two of the books I really liked, the others less so. But overall, it’s a good one.
Every Rogue Has His Charm is the final book in the Love and Let Spy series. This series follows different spies who report back to General Scott, the leader of the ring and a part time matchmaker. The final book follows Maxim Grant, who uses his background to infiltrate French intelligence to pass secrets to the crown, and Caro, who have to marry after accidentally being locked in a library together. Typically, more hijinks would ensue, but this is an angsty second chance romance. Six years later circumstances change and bring the pair back together, but can they work out their issues?
I really loved their chemistry. They are both very guarded, which causes a few issues in their relationship. Watching them work through their problems and deal with their personal growth was really nice. Maxim especially, as he has many scars both physically and emotionally.
I also LOVED the subplot romance because one of my favorite side characters finally gets their moment. The mystery was easy to follow and made sense, which is always good. The callback to book 1 was also really delightful! But probably my favorite part of the whole book was the epilogue.
I’m really sad this series is over, but it was such a fun ride. I highly recommend this series! I do suggest reading in order though as some of the books feed into each other, and it will make the ending very satisfying.
Thank you to Kensington Books/Lyrical Press and NetGalley for the eARC in exchange for review! All thoughts are my own.
Dark and ruined Maximilian Grant, Lord Chesleigh, Marquess, and unwanted heir to a dukedom, (Duke of Hartwell) has spent his life vanquishing his country’s foes. His latest assignment, as a spy for the crown, is to discover what he can about the Earnshaw household. At a house party he lets himself into the library only to confront a wayward daughter of the house who’s crept downstairs to read a novel. This doesn’t bode well, and bodes even less when they’re discovered together, Lady Caroline Brent, in barefeet and nightgown after midnight. Well he does what most gentleman would do (and why our hero should do what any man does is rich?) and declares his interest. Within four days Maxim’s left the country and is not heard of until six years later, upon his grandfather’s death. When he returns has a wife to confront, a role to take up (Duke of Hartwell), papers to deliver and a spy to uncover. Caro finds she is now Duchess of Hartwell just as her family is threatening to blackmail her in order to feather their own nest. What a conundrum! A rather enjoyable read!

I know they say never judge a book by it's cover.. I couldn't help just look at that green. Every Rogue Has His Charm was a delightful read I had so much I read it in one sitting. 5 Star read 📚
Thanks Netgalley for a arc copy of this book for a honest review
Caroline has been the Marchioness of Chesleigh for six years, but she hasn’t set eyes on her husband since the first few days after their wedding. Scarred, private Maxim was far from ready to let a wife into his heart and instead immediately went back to France to continue his espionage work, thinking Caro would be better off without him.
Upon inheriting the Dukedom of Hartwell from his estranged grandfather, Maxim returns to England to find his wife has changed and isn’t quite as soft as she once was. She’s had to learn independence and that is his fault, but the physical attraction between them is still strong. As Caro learns the secrets Maxim once hoped to keep from her, the bond between them begins to strengthen, though danger has followed him home from France and threatens their reunion.
I liked this version of second chance because, unlike many books in this trope, this one doesn’t focus overmuch on the time the MCs spent apart. Instead, the focus is more on their reunion and the two characters coming together again. Outside forces speed this along and Caro and Maxim grow to need each other, and with Maxim finally willing to admit that it was a very satisfying bit of character development. His finally being willing to open up to her lowered the angst level here, which I always appreciate, and I loved that Caro and Maxim were both so protective of each other. Her family needed to be put in their place and I liked the fact that Maxim stepped in and forced them to respect her, though I think she still deserved more of an apology than she really received. We also get a bit of a side romance here with Fitz Hopkins and Fanny Drummond that I found charming, though I’ve never much cared for Fanny and I think their HEA was a bit open and unsatisfying for me. Otherwise, I liked the level of suspense here and especially enjoyed the open communication that was finally established between Maxim and Caro. They at last became a team and I loved that aspect. All in all, this was a satisfying conclusion to a cute series.
I started this book much as an afterthought, because I had the previous one of the series to read and this one was due to be released in a couple of days and I felt quite guilty because I was behind with my ARC reading… But once I started I couldn’t seem to put it down!!! Oh, my, it had all the things I love in a historical romance book, a spy story, a forced marriage and a dark, scarred and thoroughly fascinating hero made cruel by his suffering, but transformed by love. I adored Susanna Craig’s writing, her understanding of human nature, the story she created around the spymaster and his “pupils”, the steamy bits full of passion and love, just EVERYTHING. She’s now firmly on my ever-growing list of gorgeous authors that I simply can’t miss reading! I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
This was fine, but I definitely wanted more from it in terms of basically every plot point being somewhat underdeveloped. I don't really have a lot to say about this other than it was very readable, but just not what I hoped for when I picked this one up.
I received an Advance Reader Copy from the publisher, via NetGalley. This in no way impacted on my view.
Marrying the Marquess of Chesleigh was one of the best, and worst, things Lady Caroline Brent had ever done. She meet Maxim at a house party, while hiding in the library, and after being discovered late at night, they quickly married, allowing her to flee the tyranny of her father's home. However, when her new husband left her after less than a week, and hasn't returned in 6 years, she's changed. Now living in Brighton, she's kept herself away from her family, though their letters begging for money keep coming, and she can't put them off forever. And when Maxim returns, now the Duke of Hartwell, and expects his biddable wife to be waiting, he's in for a shock. Maxim has always struggled with feeling's, and his hatred for his grandfather, and for the idea of love following what he saw during his childhood, he's scared when he's started to feel more than just desire for Caro, and so he returns to his spying roots - using his knowledge of France and French to help him help his country. On his return, though, he discovers that his old boss no longer trusts him, and has placed some agents close to the home - but once a plot is discovered to harm the new duke, was it for the best?
This is the fourth and final book in the Love and Let Spy series, and I think the perfect way for the series to end. Caro and Maxim both had their vulnerabilities, and neither was willing to give in to the other, and show them how much they were hurt, but once they realised that they meant a lot to one another, and that no matter what, their own feelings wouldn't dissipate, it was refreshing to see them open up. I did have a feeling about who the villain was, but the way it was all revealed, and how all of the plot lines (including the secondary plot line between Mrs Drummond and Captain Hopkins) all came together definitely made up for it. The epilogue right at the end, incorporating all of the stories and romances, brought a proper smile to my face, and I love seeing how all our couples have turned out! I look forward to Susanna's next series.
I adore a good second chance romance and Every Rogue Has His Charm is a wonderful one. Susanna Craig wraps up her Love and Let Spy series with an utterly engrossing love story.
An innocent mistake, a locked library, and a marriage to save a lady’s reputation – that’s how Caroline ended up wed to the mysterious Marquess of Chesleigh. Married to a stranger, Caro discovers it’s actually quite easy to grow fond of her dark and dangerous husband. But when Maxim up and leaves four days after their wedding, Caro is left on her own. Six years later she’s in Brighton when who turns up at her door but her husband! Caro is determined not to fall for Maxim again, but that’s easier said than done when the flame that burned brightly between them never went out.
Caro is bright, smart, and independent. She didn’t wither with all the whispers when her husband abandoned her. She created her own life, though it is a bit lonely. Maxim, a spy embedded in France, has returned to England to share critical intelligence. Except he keeps getting distracted by his wife. The wife he abandoned because he was terrified of opening his heart to her. Maxim screwed up badly with Caro but he wants to make it up to her. I loved watching them both come out of their shells. They are so sweet together it brought a smile on my face. They’re the type of couple who just match each other perfectly and I was easily lost in their romance.
Craig gives readers a two-for-one in this book as widowed Fanny Drummond also gets her chance at love in this book. Fanny has long been part of the Underground but when finally tasked with a mission she seizes the opportunity – and finds love along the way. Like Caro and Maxim, Fanny has been hiding her true self and she comes into her own in this story. I enjoyed her journey almost as much as I did Caro and Maxim’s.
Every Rogue Has His Charm has danger, intrigue and a lovely romance with a hero and heroine who are easy to root for. I adored this book from beginning to end. If you’re new to the Love and Let Spy series, you can easily jump in here. And if you’re a fan, then the epilogue featuring the matchmaking General Scott is sure to put a smile on your face. I loved Maxim and Caro’s story and I can’t wait to read it again!
FTC Disclosure: I received this book for free from the publisher in exchange for an honest review. I also purchased a copy of this book. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.
3.5 stars Caroline, Marchioness of Chesleigh, has been married for six years—but Caro only spent four days with Maxim before he left her. They married impulsively after they just met when her reputation was compromised. She agrees because her father is a tyrant, and he offers because she hadn’t seemed afraid of him. Scarred and secretive, Maxim immediately resumed his life of espionage and abandoned his wife. Maxim is filled with resentment for himself and everyone around him. He is entirely unlikable in the beginning. The way he disregards Caro was painful to read. He has a tragic backstory filled with neglect, but there still needed to be a lot of groveling to make up for this.
When Maxim rolls back home when he inherits a dukedom, Caro is desperately lonely, but she isn’t going to tolerate the same treatment he gave her in the four days they spent together after they married.
Caro was a strong and likable character, but Maxim was downright heartless. When you have a hero who is this cruel and selfish—even if he is damaged—I expect him to put in the work to change and I expect real atonement. Caro warmed up to him too quickly for me and I wanted more to see him spend more time reflecting and then acting.
This is the fourth in the Love and Let Spy series, but the first that I’ve read. I liked the writing and the spy plot and will go back and read the others. There’s a side romance between supporting characters that’s entertaining and probably something that fans of the series will like.
Caroline, Marchioness of Chesleigh, has been married for six years—at least in name. In fact, Caro has hardly seen her husband since the first week of their union. Scarred and reclusive, Maxim wasn’t ready to trust his wife with his secrets—or his heart. Instead, he quickly resumed his life of espionage in France, believing Caro was better off alone. When the spy who left her returns upon inheriting the Dukedom of Hartwell from his loathsome grandfather, he finds his wife is not the girl she once was. Now, the more Caro learns about the past Maxim tried to hide from her, the deeper their bond grows. But danger haunts her husband’s every move, jeopardizing their passionate reunion . The fourth & final book in the series & a lovely finale especially the epilogue, which rounded everything off perfectly. I loved both Maxim & Caro both had been wounded mentally by their family but he was the one afraid to love. I thoroughly enjoyed their journey to a HEA, which included, spies, secrets, horrid family members & a sizzling attraction. I think I might have made Maxim grovel more but he tried to be a better husband on his return. A very well written engrossing read, which I devoured in an afternoon My honest review is for a special copy I voluntarily read
I've really enjoyed this series from Craig, and the final installment proved to be no exception to that fact. The mere premise in and of itself — a couple getting married after being found in a compromising position only for the scarred hero to take off after four days a) partly because of secret spy duties and b) partly because he's having too many feelings for his new wife, and then he's gone for EIGHT YEARS. If you suspect there'd be a lot of groveling involved by the time he returns to settle some inheritance affairs, you'd be right; however, to me, it seemed there needed to be MORE of Maxim being brought to his knees in an effort to win Caro over again. The other thing that kept me from being able to give this a 5-star review was the romance B-plot; I was left wanting more from the other couple who gets together at the conclusion of the series, and I think a solo book for them would have made this one somewhat better paced in the long run. Overall a wonderful conclusion, though, and I look forward to whatever Craig plans on writing next.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book from the publisher via NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Wow, this was really entertaining. I had my likes and dislikes though. I hated that Caro was overwhelmed with her family, always wanting money from her. Her father was ghastly. Caro's husband, Maxim, leaves her and doesn't come home for 6 years. The rest of the story was lovely. Loved the main characters and a storyline that was a little unique for me. 5☆
3 1/2 stars. Took me multiple attempts to get past the beginning 6-12% for some reason. However once I finally did, I didn’t want to stop as I was fully engaged. Regardless I am glad I kept trying, as the story weaves in multiple characters from other books, and manages to tie the series up in a satisfying way.
Received an Advance Reader Copy in exchange for a fair review 3.5 stars. Fans of the wounded hero trope will like the formidable, scarred Lord Chesleigh in “Every Rogue Has His Charm”, by Susanna Craig (Kensington Books, Lyrical Press), an intriguing, brooding hero, who equals power with gentleness. Lord Chesleigh is a mysterious, secret hero, who sees himself as a beast and is led to marriage with younger Caroline. His occupation is busy and dangerous but otherwise he’s been living with a sense of emptiness and loneliness. The portrayal of the formidable, scowling hero is compelling in its very visual rendering, emphasizing the size, the unfashionable tan and the irregular features (all that make him so attractive). Maxim’s tragic backstory and his occupation contribute to the allure, too. The fact he’s smitten with the heroine, Caro, and tries to resist her (Caro had “taken up residence in his thoughts, despite his determination to put ample distance between them”) softens him. I adored the beginning of the story with its enchanting quality and the flawed hero whose passion makes him distance from the heroine. I liked the heroine and her determination, the supporting characters and a second romance happening between two other characters. Yet I found that the reuniting process lacked development and there wasn’t enough showing the main leads’ romance, chemistry and attraction. Some parts of the dialogue and sex scenes seemed too modern and Fanny’s feminism sounded anachronistic. As for the spying business it was fun most of the times, but often seemed a bit amateurish. Overall, an enjoyable, amusing, light, well-written read combining romance and mystery, with likeable characters.
3.5-4 Stars!! This is book 4 in the ‘Love and Let Spy’ series and can be read as a standalone. I did enjoy this book even if at times I was rolling my eyes, mostly over the main male character, Maxim, and his reasoning at times. But he is a man after all and they do tend to make some asinine decisions at times. (Sorry, not sorry!) Although considering his childhood, I’ll let him have a pass this time. The main female character, Caroline, was likable and didn’t really put up with Maxim’s bull. I really liked how it was duel narrations and it had bits of Fanny & Fitz’ blossoming relationship. Spy’s, murder attempts, strong women living their lives with and without their men, rekindling a relationship & an HEA ending. All in all, a good read! *I received this at no charge & I voluntarily left this review.*
Caroline’s husband has shown up after abandoning her four days into their marriage. He went undercover in France for six years while she lived frugally, constantly sending her pin money to demanding family members. She isn’t sure she can trust him and neither is his spy master boss, who sends a female agent to befriend Caroline and a male agent to back her up.
While we watch Caroline and Maxim figure out if they can be together, we also see the two agents sent to assess the situation come together. It’s two for one here! I love that the agents, Fanny and Fitz, aren’t sure they’re interested the expected conclusion for a couple in a romance novel.
The most delightful part of the book is the epilogue, which jumps years into the future to General Scott’s retirement party. All the characters from the series are there with children and dogs in tow. While this series could have continued, it was a satisfying and fitting end. I’ve only read one series finale epilogue this satisfying (Sins for All Seasons by Lorraine Heath).
Every Rogue Has His Charm is the fourth book in the Love and Let Spy series and we follow Caroline, who was freed from the clutches of her tyrannical and ungrateful father through marriage. Her marriage to Maxim (the scarred and reclusive Duke) lasted less than a week with him running away to battle. She still cannot understand why he shied away from her even when she was willing and heart open ready to love. He cannot understand why she is willing to stay with him, and is unwilling to be vulnerable with her despite the chemistry between the two. But when Caroline is in bed with some spies, and Maxim is suspected to be a traitor, things got rather spicy.
I recieved a free copy from netgalley in exchange for an honest review. While this is the final book in the series it can be read as a stand alone. Caro is desperate to escape her father and so she agrees to marry Maxim a complete stranger. A stranger about whom there are rumors in part due to his scars. Maxim proposes to a stranger after they are caught alone at night in a library. Once we'd Maxim flees the marriage afraid of loving Caro. I liked how the two learned to be together slowly. I liked how Maxim was so protective or Caro and how she understood him and his past so well. 4 stars.
Every Rogue Has His Charm by Susanna Craig Love & Let Spy #4
Great story of love delayed but oh so worth waiting for! I fear this is the end of the series but what a wonderful series filled with spies and love it proved to be!
What I liked: * Maximilien “Maxim” Grant: Marquess in line to be a Duke, spy, raised by his abusive grandfather, terrible accident when young, difficult backstory, has visible and invisible scars, perfect for and with Caro * Caroline “Caro” Brent: daughter of an abusive Lord, loves to read, eager to get away from her father, stronger than she thinks, caught in a compromising position with Maxim, intriguing woman, perfect for and with Maxim * Fanny & Fitz: spies sent to keep an eye on Maxim and Caro * The way Maxim offered for Caro and their first days together * General Scott: spy master, matchmaker, married for years to the woman he loves, cares about the people working for him. * The story, writing, plot, and pacing * The intrigue * That I cared about Caro and Maxim and hoped they would get their happily ever after * The second love story and how the couple opted to move forward together * The epilogue: saw all the couples from previous books in the series and learned how they are doing
What I didn’t like: * Who and what I was meant not to like * Caro’s father, Maxim’s grandfather, and the traitor
Did I enjoy this book? Yes Would I read more by this author? Yes
Thank you to NetGalley and Kensington-Lyrical for the ARC – This is my honest review.
I just love it when a series comes full circle at the end and I could not have been happier with with this series finale!
This book delivers not one, but 2 HEA’s and we get a cute story line on the Spymaster/ matchmaker himself along with lovely wife.
For those not familiar with the series, it follows an underground spy English intelligence unit during the time of Napoleon, that just so happens to have a spymaster that sets his officers on assignments that end in matrimonial results!
In ERHHC we get a well done beauty and the beast marriage reconciliation story as the central storyline.
Caro is saved from scandal and her terrible father by the monstrous agent to the Underground Maxim, only to be abandoned by him days after their wedding. 6 years later he returns after an inheritance and not only his loyalty to his wife is in question, but that of England! Now the spy is being spied!
Absolutely loved this book and this series!

Cute but I wish the characters had been developed a little more. I don’t know how to explain it, but Maxim very quickly did a 180 on his feelings toward Caro, and Caro forgive his abandonment very quickly. I suppose more struggle would have been appreciated? But a nice conclusion to the series, all the same.
