Ashfall #2

Ashfall Prophecy

Rate this book
Pittacus Lore is back with the second installment in an all-new adventure rooted in the real mysteries surrounding Roswell, New Mexico.

Syd Chambers grew up on Earth with his human mother and barely remembers his alien father from Denza, who left on a mission when Syd was very young. After leaving Earth, Syd learned the truth of his father's disappearance on the planet Ashfall--his father had died protecting a devastating secret about the history between humans and Denzans.

Syd is now faced with a choice--free humanity from imprisonment on Earth, which will allow them to come into physical power beyond their wildest dreams; or destroy Earth so that humans never have a chance to enslave, torment, and kill other species again. It has been prophesied that Syd is destined to become a world-killer, but Syd is determined to choose his own fate, and knows there must be another path forward that will honor his father's sacrifice.

You should definitely pick up this book is you enjoy Sci-Fi with incredible characters with individual personalities and a plot that shoves you in a spaceship and launches you straight into space. Highly recommend younread book one, Ashfall Legacy, first so that you can get the full experience. Bit the story will not leave you hanging. I love how the author takes humanity to all new levels, both good and bad, as the story progresses. Syd and. Zara are my favorite characters and the intensity of the battle scenes and structure that builds the story forced me to finish the book in two days. I couldn't stop reading and can't wait to see what adventure Syd might find next. There's always intrigue and subterfuge happening in the background that make you worry for the characters even after you've stopped reading. I received a copy of this book from NetGalley. I was not required to leave a positive review. All thoughts and opinions expressed are my own.

I literally laughed out loud so many times. I almost cried on multiple occasions. I also thought it was the last book so I was increasingly concerned as to how he was gonna wrap it up within the few pages left. Anxiously awaiting the next book.

Thanks NetGalley ARC from HarperCollins:

I enjoyed this book. Finished this one in an afternoon. It’s exciting and a good series so far. I will be reading more from this author now.

The first “chapter” threw me— was not expecting something written in the second person like that. But that was when I checked to see if there were other books in the series (hooray there were and it was available to read from the library!). And just when I got used to second person, the viewpoint changed to the first person. Which made more sense after I read the first book.

Anyway, I am not going to give away spoilers for this but it was a great second book in this series. Fast paced to the point I was almost at the end of the book and didn’t realize it.

Edited to add: I DID NOT REALIZE that the author is the same guy from the Thousand Little Pieces fame wherein he lied about being incarcerated, etc., and lied to Oprah. So, there’s that.

What's it about (in a nutshell):
Ashfall Prophecy by Pittacus Lore is a YA sci-fi story set in space and starts where Ashfall Legacy leaves off. Syd Chambers has learned the truth of his father's disappearance and all that he was trying to protect in book one, and now he must decide whether to free humanity or destroy Earth. How much will fate dictate this decision, and how can Syd choose his future and that of Earth?

Initial Expectations (before beginning the book):
I read book 1, Ashfall Legacy, last year, so I expect to read more of that tale. The first book is fast-paced with plenty of action and cool planets and creatures to explore. Hopefully, book two will be similar, and it would be nice if it were even better.

Actual Reading Experience:
My actual reading experience was a bit of a challenge early on. Enough background information was not provided to jog my memory about the details from when I read the first book a year ago. I had trouble remembering the different components of each species of the significant support characters though I generally remembered the events. So you must read this book soon after Ashfall Legacy for the best reading experience.

I loved all of the action in this story. Spaceships chasing one another, kidnappings, and other events kept the story flowing and the pages flipping. It stays narrowly focused throughout, which I also enjoyed, and it's an exciting tale from start to finish.

Lastly, I enjoyed the twist on the role of humans in the universe. It is relatively unique and creative, and I've never seen humans represented this way amongst various other creatures or the Earth portrayed the way it is, for that matter.

Characters:
The characters did not go through a lot of growth in Ashfall Prophecy. Not like they did in Ashfall Legacy. I would have liked to have had more development, but I understand that the story covers a relatively short period of awake time, so it may be difficult.

Narration & Pacing:
The narration is fascinating in this book. Most of it is in 1st person through Syd's eyes, but a few chapters focus on Darcy, and those are written in 2nd person. If you've never read a story told in the second person, you are in for quite a unique experience. The pacing is fast, primarily with spaceship chases and other conflicts, but it does slow at points. Changing to second-person narration slowed down my reading as I worked to process what I was reading.

Setting:
The setting is space and a few different planets with unique creatures. I think the aspect that I love the most is world-building. It is incredibly imaginative, with plenty of sensory descriptions that make you feel like you are there on each new planet and in the spaceship. There is much for the reader to explore that made my imagination soar.

To Read or Not to Read:
If you enjoy Chosen One stories set in space, then the Ashfall series is one that you will want to consider. It is essential to start with Book 1, Ashfall Legacy, as you will have trouble following what's going on in Ashfall Prophecy if you don't.

I received a copy of this book directly from the author/publisher in exchange for an honest review.

I'll admit, I made a mistake when I picked up this book. I was given an ARC copy, unaware that this was the 2nd book in the series, so going into it, I was confused and overwhelmed by the amount of information the author seemingly glossed over. There were tons of lore and alien names and creatures, and some sort of big event that had just happened, and I was scrambling to figure out how I ended up being dropped into the middle of a scene without any idea what was going on.

This is not a standalone book by any means, and I would certainly not recommend anyone pick it up without reading the previous book - because you will be confused. I struggled for two chapters to try and make sense of the book, who the characters were, and what was happening, and it was like stumbling through a receding tide.

And I'll admit, the book didn't open in a way that made me want to read it. The first chapter - more of a prologue of sorts, was written in 2nd person point-of-view, and I very nearly threw the book aside right then and there. It was incredibly jarring to have the narrator tell me what I was seeing and feeling and thinking - it's an incredibly invasive narrative style. Had the book continued in this manner, I would have stopped reading after the first sentence - but luckily the rest of the book was written from a more standard 1st person point-of-view. I have no idea why the author made this stylistic choice, but I loathed it.

In the end, I DNF'd the book. It was confusing, and there was no sort of lay-up of information for readers to be eased into the story if they'd missed the first book. I didn't feel sucked into the story, and I couldn't identify with any of the characters. This is partly my fault, for picking up the series out of order, but it's also partly the author's fault. I am a firm believer that any book should stand alone in some sense - because you can't control when a reader will pick up a series, and this book just couldn't stand on its own. It was tiring and boring to try and figure out what was happening, and the author did nothing to ease the transition of the reader into the story. I'm giving this book a hard pass.

Pittacus Lore is back again with a second installment of Ashfall in Ashfall Prophecy. I want to thank the publisher/author for an advanced reader copy. The following review is not impacted by their generosity.

The first book was kind of a unique take on the Roswell idea. In book one, Syd Chambers has grown up on earth with his human mother only to find out he's actually half alien from a race called the Denza. He also learns the secret of his father's disappearance to a planet called Ashfall (where the series gets its name). Without giving spoilers away from book one, let's just say there was a huge secret between the Denza and the humans, and Syd's father died protecting that secret from getting out.

That leads us to the Ashfall Prophecy. In book two, Syd is left with the horrible question of what to do with the information he's garnered in book one. In book one, Syd was prophesized to be a "world-killer," so he's left with figuring out what that means to him and planet earth. Let's just say, the rest of the universe has a very legitimate reason to wanting humans to stay on our happy blue orb and not escape into the rest of the universe unsupervised. As humans do, we have a history of destroying things.

As with the first book, this ongoing space opera has some good chase scenes a few battles lots of explosions and a few snarky quips along the way.

As for the style of writing, most of the book is written from a first-person POV (Syd's), but there are a few second-person chapters told from a different character's POV. Normally, this type of shift in POV is jarring, but I think it works here.

Like the first novel, this one doesn't end the story, so it's clear that Lore has more sequels coming to this world he has created.

ASHFALL PROPHECY is an engaging sci-fi read that picks up after ASHFALL LEGACY. Jumping right back into the action, Syd is now finding his way on the universal stage. Syd lived on Earth with his mother, after his alien father had died keeping a secret about the past between Denza and humanity. As Syd got caught up in a prophecy that proclaimed him to be something dangerous, and he has learned that his decisions may have rippling effects.

What I loved: This is a really fun sci-fi series with aliens, different planets, ships, and more. The premise is really intriguing with the prophecy and secrets that may be tied up together and have important implications to how things will play out in the series. The pace is quick and pulls the reader into the story with the story primarily told from Syd's point-of-view, as well as interludes from another character in the second-person.

The characters are really strong in the series, particularly amongst Sid's companions. These are teens who are trying to do their best while dealing with some heavy potential consequences. There are some major themes around human nature, morality of decisions, and fate that really drive the story and make it quite thought-provoking in places.

Final verdict: Overall, ASHFALL PROPHECY is an entertaining YA sci-fi/fantasy read with great characters and an intriguing premise. Recommend reading this series in order!

Please note that I received an ARC. All opinions are my own.

Syd Chambers has learned the truth of his father’s disappearance on the planet Ashfall, and the truth weighs heavily on him. Should he free humanity from imprisonment on Earth, or fulfill the prophecy that says he will destroy Earth? Syd is determined to choose his own fate, but at what cost?

Book two picks up where book one ended: Syd and his friends fleeing Ashfall. In their flight, they leave one of their own behind. The truth weighs on the cadet crew of Eastwood. They do their best to evade the Denzians, wanting time to think of what to do. But a secret cannot remain secret when more than one person knows.

I will admit, it took a while for me to remember these characters. It’s been a year since I read the first book, and I didn’t reread it before beginning this one. Once I did remember, I was pleased to be back with these characters. Their journey was an interesting one, and I was eager to see what happens next.

The fact that this is a doulogy is disappointing. I want to know what happens to Syd and his friends! Does the prophecy that he will be “the World Killer” happen? Or just from a certain point of view? Does the author have more planned for this world he has built? I want to know what comes next!

Though I still do not care for the swearing, I did enjoy the book. It was well written and detailed. Readers of sci-fi adventure will no doubt enjoy this duology.

I received a free copy via NetGalley and all opinions expressed are my own.

Syd knows he is different. He was raised by his human mother and doesn’t really remember his alien father. It turns out that Syd’s father died on the planet Ashfall protecting a secret about humans and Denzans. Syd is now faced with an impossible choice. He can free humans from the limitations of Earth or he can destroy Earth itself to keep humans from attacking other species … again. Syd knows that he has been prophesied a world-killer, but can he choose his own path? Was his father’s death in vain?

Ashfall Prophecy is the second book in the Ashfall series. The book’s introduction tells readers that this is a duology, but after finishing this book I believe Lore can write more in this sci-fi universe if he chooses. This novel is full of space travel, aliens, adventure and personal conflict, so many reader types will enjoy this book. The overall feel is similar to Lore’s other novels and I found myself wondering if the worlds were crossing, but readers do NOT need to have read the other series to enjoy this one.

I have a few thoughts about the conclusion to this duology (which it doesn't really feel like it, but maybe it's meant to be that way and there will be a spin off series about what happens in the future...?).
1. Darcy's chapters being in second person really threw me, ngl. While I have read a few books where the second person actually works pretty well with the narrative, this took me out of the story and was a bit disorienting, and not in a way that seemed intentional. I felt like it was totally removed from the rest of the plot and was just a bit jarring.
2. The pacing of this book was fast - almost too fast. It felt like a TON happened in a very short window, and because of that, some of the plot points felt a little overlooked or underdeveloped. For example, the whole situation back on Denza with Rafe and the takeover of the Denzan Senate? I never even realized that the Origin spread at all past Rafe. That whole debacle was just a bit confusing and I feel like it could have benefitted from a bit more detail of the time that passed.

Pittacus Lore wrote one of my favourite series or universes in I am number 4 and so I was so excited for the Ashfall series. The first book was pretty good, good enough to pick up the second at least and then this book was not my favourite at all. I rate my books as 4 stars for a book I liked, 5 stars if it was amazing, 3 stars if it was just okay and 2 stars for a book I could barely finish. This book almost reached a two star status. It took me almost 2 months to read, when I usually read a book in a week. There was random povs that made no sense. I usually can read a second book in a series years later and retain the information and remember but this book I was just so lost and it was less then a year later. Everything was so all over the place, and I had trouble understanding what was happening. I don’t know if I even like the concept if I did know what was happening. I do not know if I would read the 3rd book if it came out.

“I've been watching a lot of Earth sitcoms lately. To mellow out, you know? I would say eighty percent of the troubles there stem from humans not being in touch with their emotions. It's a real problem for them.”
“He's in touch with one emotion,” Zara replied. “Being a little bitch.”

I will preface this review by stating this is the second book in a duology, and I have not read the first.

Pittacus Lore did a great job of world building and populating that world with interesting species. The story was plot driven with a mix of action and political intrigue, neither of which I found very thrilling. The characters, while having distinct personalities, were a little flat to me. There was no one to really care about, and for me, made it easy to leave the book and come back later sometimes, much later.

This was left so open-ended that I don't know what to think. I love this duology and think that it works the way it ended, but it's so different from the Lorien Legacy Universe and how every possible avenue and point of view was explored in them. This is more recent, and maybe Pittacus Lore plans on adding to it, but for everything that is currently is, I'm so happy to have read it!

Ashfall Prophecy by Pittacus Lore In the second book of the series, Syd is motivated to choose his own path and trusts there must be another option to the prophesy that he will be a world killer. In his quest he also wants acknowledgement of his father's sacrifice. An action packed, fast paced space adventure with a unique premise and interesting characters.

Thank you to the author, publisher, and NetGalley for the opportunity to preview the book.

The Ashfall series was something of a departure for Pittacus Lore. The original Lorien Legacies series had 7 books. The Lorien Legacies Reborn series was a trilogy. There are also the novella collections connected to those series, which contained lots of short stories. But Ashfall was only a duology. This meant that Ashfall Prophecy not only had to continue on from Ashfall Legacy, but it had to wrap everything up. And I think it accomplished both tasks really well.

Ashfall Prophecy is the second book in the Ashfall series by Pittacus Lore. The characters are well written, and you can clearly picture them and the vivid scenes in this novel. Lore writes a vivid world where humans are more than humans. I enjoyed this book and finished this one in an afternoon. I will be reading more from this author soon.

A continuation of Ashfall Legacy, it was very good. All kinds of plot twists & confusion. Hopefully they’ll be a book to follow this one as I can’t wait to read what supposedly happens to aid Syd along in his fate of destroying a planet & how Darcy will try to stop him.
