'Yukito Ayatsuji' is the original creator of Another. He is a famous writer of mystery and Japanese detective fiction. He is also one of the writers that demands restoration of the classic rules of detective fiction and the use of more self reflective elements. He is married to Fuyumi Ono, author of The Twelve Kingdoms and creator of Ghost Hunt, Juuni Kokuki, and the author for a few other manga.
Another mind-fuck book by Japanese detective novelist Yukito Ayatsuji in the form of a short-stories collection. What can you expect to get out of reading Freaks? Mind-fuck, mind-fuck and more nightmarish crazy mind-fuck, that's it.
But the cover of this new-version is so damn pretty, I should re-read it soon.
Edited@13/09/2015:
Yukito Ayatsuji's novella Freaks contents three stories: 'Demon's Hands', 'Who Am I?' and 'The Patient At Room 561', all of the stories take place in an asylum and the narrators might or might not be mentally ill patients (you have to find out for yourself), these are finely written and entertaining stories about insanity, murder, asylum and mad scientist (and those stories also pay homage to classical detective/mystery novels); and they can always keep you guessing. Though these are not Mr. Ayatsuji at his finest.
「夢魔の手 ー三一三号室の患者ー:Hands of a nightmare -Patient in room 303-」★★☆☆☆ The story development changes repeatedly. But, I felt an ending when I read the first few pages. And I think, it is too cruel to call it 'sin'. 「四〇九号室の患者:Patient in room 409」 ★★☆☆☆ For me, this story didn't strongly attract my heart. Still, surprise was waiting for an ending. 「フリークス ー五六四室の患者ー:Freaks -Patient in room 564」★★★★★ I think that this book has value just to read this story. When I saw the meaning of 'Freaks'... Anyway amazing! In this story, some symbols are hidden other than 'Freaks'. One of them is this sub title. 564→Japanese '5 Go, 6 Roku, 4 Yon'→'5 Ko, 6 Ro, 4 Shi'→Koroshi=murder I like so much such a Japanese style word game.
