Wicked Darkness

Rate this book
Sometimes it isn't only villains that crave the darkness.

Sapphira Dawn had been lied to about her identity.

Now the gods agree she should never have been created in the first place.

Her very existence means that the gods aren't playing by the rules, and as they ready their game pieces for the next battle, Sapphira must gather her allies before they - and the entire mortal realm - are wiped from the board.

But someone close to her is hiding a deadly secret.

A secret that will make Sapphira question what she is fighting for.

As her allies vanish one by one, Sapphira spirals deeper into her unstable magic, drawn in by the addictive high and wicked release it offers.

If Sapphira can't control the darkness within, the mortal realm will fall, and everything she knows and loves will be nothing more than ashes and dust

I finished Wicked Darkness and I fell in love with this perplexed and intricate world that the author webbed for us. You really need to pick this one up if you love myths, legends, creatures from different cultures such us Dhampir, Seers, Djinns, gods, fae, etc. 😍🙌🏻

What really caught me off guard was that both books made me like some characters and then boom.. Backstabbing bitches everywhere! This book really shows you that you can't trust anyone.. Get ready for some heartbreak, betrayal and mind blown plot twists! 🤯

I also loved the idea of charms and the meaning each one of them had, the secondary characters like Hunter, Ravi, Lyra, Fallon and the relationship they had with the heroine and other characters! But the ending.. KILLED ME! I don't know how I'm supposed to wait for the next book. 😱😭

The same fast-paced, action-packed atmosphere of book 1, except now we have even more plot twists!

We are thrown straight into the excitement yet again. I started this book immediately after book 1 (yay for getting an ARC copy!), and I was impressed that there was absolutely no lull in the action. This series NEVER stops moving, there are absolutely no quiet moments to be seen. We're introduced to more God(desse)s and supernatural creatures - who I'd have liked to learn a bit more about. Penumbra is probably my favourite new character, even if she doesn't give the best first impression... you'll understand when you read it.

I expected Sapphira to wholeheartedly embrace her darkness here, and I suppose she does in ways, but sometimes it's directed at the wrong people. I hated when she took her grief out on those closest to her instead of properly channelling it into taking down the bad guys. The mental toll the action has taken on her is obvious and understandable, but I found it a bit too much to read.

If you thought the first book had a lot of plot twists, this one is going to blow your mind. There are so many shocking moments that leave you wondering if you ever even had a clue about what was going on. We find out some major secrets through chapters devoted to different characters. These were definitely interesting to read, but I found it frustrating knowing what was going on in the background while Sapphira remained relatively oblivious.

This is really well-written, I don't want anyone to doubt that. It's such a unique world and Sapphira's powers are so interesting. My slightly lower rating is because I found the amount of betrayal disheartening. Sapphira can't catch a break, and I just wanted something to work out for her for once.

The last we see of Sapphira promises even more excitement going forward!

Sapphira races to learn all she can about her magic, and if she can’t control the darkness within, the mortal realm will fall, and everything she knows and loves will be nothing more than ashes and dust.

The writing style in this book is really good. The concept of Dhampires (If you like Vampire Academy, you'll love this) seers and all the dark goodness is very well written. I especially loved Sapphira's struggle with the dark. The character development was amazing and we get to glimpse the 'good girl turned bad' side of the character. I think the bracelet and what it means to her defines the progress of the book. The friendship/found family group this book had was *chef's kiss*. But Hunter was my favourite! But the ending was the cherry on top. What?? I have so many questions now 🤣

Wicked Darkness is wicked amazing!!! Right off the bat you are thrown into action and it never stops! I love Sapph’s connection with her bracelet and what each charm means/does, and I’m so thrilled to have received a handmade bracelet from the author. *Fangirl squeal* Yes, I shamelessly wore it every time I picked the book up 😆

We are introduced to some new characters, which is something I always look forward to in sequels. And they were expertly written into the story seamlessly. Each served a purpose.

The fast-pace plot had me falling off my seat at every plot twist. B.L Callaghan knows how to steer the reader in the wrong direction, and I loved that I fell for it every time. She clearly has a passion and talent for writing and you can see it in every sentence.

I think I read the story far too fast, because now I have to wait for book three!!!

A fast-paced thrill ride from start to finish, WICKED DARKNESS is filled with gods/goddesses, monsters, dark magic, and plenty of morally grey characters. With its myriad of twists and turns, Callaghan will keep you guessing until the very end. Sapphira is a character I fell in love with in book one, and I loved seeing how far she’s come and how she’s embraced her newfound status. A must read for fans of mythology, magical worlds, and mysteries, this is a series I’ll definitely recommend to everyone.

This book has literally ruined my life. I am crying. My heart is broken. Why?! 😭

So this book started off a little less action packed than the first did. However for the rest of the book I felt like I couldn’t breathe! So much interesting stuff was happening and I didn’t want to breathe and miss it 😂

This read was an absolutely spectacular follow on from book 1 and it honestly blew my mind. I tried to roll with the punches that this book dealt, I really did, but I am absolutely broken by the events in this one 😭

This book has taught me not to bloody trust anybody! I swear people I thought were good and lovely turned out to be absolute maniacs! I have poor judge of character, I have now come to this conclusion.

I absolutely loved that this book had more of the mythology side of things in it (👀 Loki) and I still can’t decide which of them we should and shouldn’t like, other than Ares, fuck Ares. The mythology = on point.

The bracelet! I love the meanings and importance behind each charm and I can see these abilities becoming a more vital part of the story later down the line. ( *whispers* I need the bracelet in my life)

The plot to this one, like the last has SO MANY PLOT TWISTS!) Girl, I know I’m bad at guessing plot direction but you make it impossible and I am all for it!

I can’t even coherently write this as I am DISTRAUGHT. So have my sad ramblings and listen when I say READ THESE BOOKS!

SPOILER WARNING

Initial thought-

‘Valdis and sappiras relationship is superior.’

Thoughts now- I’m an idiot. We hate Valdis. That is all.

Initial thought-

How has she not realised that Ravi is a dodgy fuck. Okay not a dodgy fuck. Holy hell why you do this 😭😭😭

Turns out, I was right initially. Ravi is the biggest piece of poo!!!

Lyra 😭

We still hate Ari the cowbag

END OF SPOILERS

And just to finish off with some of my absolute favourite quotes:

‘... my heart was hers from the first moment our eyes met.’ - Hunter (my smol cute bean)

‘... you sound like a petulant child, a helpless victim of your own life. Is that who you are - who you want to be?’ - Lyra (the queen of not taking shit. You dish those facts girl!)

I was surprised by how much I enjoyed this. Admittedly, I read this out of order; however, it didn’t affect how much I enjoyed this story. I will say this series has not helped me with my trust issues, but I really enjoyed this and the world that was created. This was a fast-paced story that doesn’t slow down.

We meet new characters in this book, and each one serves a purpose. That’s one of the things I liked about this book. No one is a wasted character, which can be hard to achieve. There were so many twists and turns, and I often wondered where the story was going.

Overall, I enjoyed where the story went, and I would really love more!

The number of times I went into shock reading this books cannot be counted. Sapphira was soo badass in the second book! I fell in love with her more and more with every chapter! It was refreshing to read about the inner battle between herself and her magic. I absolutely love the way she matured and got to know about her self worth and importance. There were sooo many twists! You can't get bored in this book! Every chapter ending has a new twist which forces you to skip your sleep and turn the page!
Everybody betrays everyone.

Okay...just okay

This book is a little but confusing and following the storyline can be challenging. Sappfara is not really who they said she waa, and has contained to collect powers and abilities from both good and evil. There are some exciting moments and some devastating realities that through the story into shock.
I really wish the ending has been better. I'm glad Sappf has a better than average chance to succeed. As always, there are those who live and deceive people who really care about them, but in the end, justice will prevail.
It's an interesting story but not really my thing.

I was so excited to receive an ARC (in exchange for an honest review) right after finishing book one!

Book 2 wastes no time picking up on the action we received in Awaken. As I mentioned in my review for that book, B.L. Callaghan writes an amazing, edge-of-your-seat action sequence. I’m happy to say that was not lost in the sequel & we get even more action as we follow Sapphira on her quest to master her powers & find out the truth about who she is.

Every character is written in such a way that you really cannot classify them as purely good or evil. As such, you are always a bit apprehensive when a new alliance is formed. I even found myself wondering at times if Sapphira wasn’t the villain! I loved the twists & turns. I basically never fully trusted any character & that kept me pretty much in a constant state of anxiety the entire time (but in a good way lol).

This series has deep roots in a variety of mythologies. The deeper we got into the lore, the more well known gods show up. I squealed when a certain god of mischief made an appearance — though this one is much more Norse than Hiddleston. 😉

We got a bit more romance in this one, but don’t get too excited spicy book lovers — it’s mostly fade to black. It was great to see LGBTQ+ rep & a variety of darker skinned characters round out the cast, both of which are sorely lacking in the fantasy genre.

Without giving anything away, this book perfectly sets up another in the series. If you enjoy action focused fantasy with a large cast of morally gray characters, you’re sure to enjoy The Goddess Incarnate series!

Book 2 was another amazing read for me. I felt like I was in a movie. The second book shows a darker side of Sapphira as she learns more about who she is. The constant plot twists kept me on edge and wanting more. I like how each character told there side in the story. The ending left me with a cliff hanger hating Ravi. Can’t wait for the 3rd book to see what happens.

Wow!
I really loved this story.
I'm so excited to have been able to beta read for B.L. Callaghan.

You can tell the author put in a lot of effort in this sequel and it compliments Awaken perfectly. I loved the dark elements intertwined and found myself flipping through pages as quickly as possible to see what would happen next with Sapphira. Every time I thought I knew what would happen next, I'd be dead wrong and I really love that about a story. By the end of the book, I was heartbroken and drooling for book three.

I want to keep this review spoiler-free so I won't dive into much detail as it's not out yet, but I will say it's painful to get too close to any of the characters. They all have their own stories, and goals...maybe a little morally grey. I love them, but GAWD was I burned a few times. (In a good way)

This is 100% worth the read and I'm so excited to see where the author takes this next!
