Confounding, convicting and replete with mysterious beauty. To consider it pure joy when you suffer, to crave humility, to control your tongue to submit yourself to God. Words of life impossible but through Him.
I remember really liking James for his frankness and clarity, but this close read showed me it's more cryptic and complicated. I guess that's why we have Bible studies! I never realized how jarring and unusual the style is, because we usually don't read everything back to back.
James has always been a book that touched me. The wise advice in it cuts right to my heart.
In studying James, I had a hard time finding an outline. However, I was able to see themes. I believe James is writing to Jewish believers who have been scattered so this is a letter to be shared with a community. I think he's encouraging the readers not to go astray, but to endure trials and suffering. His solution is wisdom.
Wisdom in behavior brings godly results such as harmony, humility, and joy. A lack of wisdom brings ungodly outcomes such as strife, favoritism, doubt, shallow faith and character from only hearing God's words.
I read a commentary by Ruth Anne Reese while I studied James. It was helpful in defining words, comparing various translations, and presenting different views on the interpretation of what James said. One thing I took away from the commentary was that James had a few beatitudes in his letter. 1:12 Blessed are those who endure trials with joy for endurance builds faith in God and wholeness (we're perfected by trials). 1:25 Blessed are those who look at the perfect law and practice it. 5:11 Blessed are those who endure for they will be like Job who saw God's purpose, mercy and compassion.
James also contrasted godly and ungodly behaviors. Faith and trust in God vs doubt and distrust. Joy during trials vs complaints. Depending on yourself and wealth vs depending on God in humility. Dull hearing and hasty words vs listening with controlled speech and controlled anger. Words that tear down vs words that build up. Only hear God's words vs hear and act on them. Belief in words only vs believe and do good works. Favoritism vs love.
I think James is still upholding the same ideas I found in Romans and Galatians. Good works start with belief in God and a renewed heart. Only then will our actions show godly character. Yet our actions always show what we believe. Slander, festering anger, judgment all show a lack of love or belief and trust in God. This behavior shows we're not renewed by God's Spirit. We're still subject to our sinful passions. Love, joy, peace etc. all come from God. Our behavior demonstrates what we believe.
Top thing is got from this book: 1. Just bc you are saved doesn’t mean that you can fall back into sin and not lose your salvation. It can be lost. Must take up the cross every day 2. Be careful what you speak out loud. The devil is listening. He’s got ears that you wouldn’t believe (also lyrics from “these days” by the black keys) 3. GODS PLAN > MINE
Beautiful scripture!❤️ Challenged by NY pastor yesterday to read this Book and live each day to the fullest like James is motivating us to do in James 4:13-14!
Controlling the tongue needs to be a daily act in order to bring life to those around us. Very difficult when different views come into play each day when people gather. Sow peace. We also need to welcome each one as you would like to be welcomed. No favoritism among people regardless of their status or clothing. Showing that means we have stumbled in God's laws and are guilty of all.
