What happens when love shows up in an unexpected package? What’s more important…the love or the form it takes?
Wyatt Smothers, a retired rodeo bronc rider, ran the family ranch with his brother, Rick, and sister, Donna Jo. Ranching was hard work, and successful ranching was even harder. Over the years since they lost their parents, the siblings had tried various schemes to infuse more capital into the operation, but things never ended with more money in the bank. That was until Donna Jo came up with her next great idea…a weight loss camp. Wyatt wasn’t keen in the beginning, but he was outvoted, so they began making preparations.
When he read an essay written by one of the applicants, Wyatt had a change of heart regarding the idea. U-4-NY had poured her heart into answering the question regarding her motivations for losing weight, and Wyatt couldn’t help but violate one of the adviser’s rules…no personal communications with the campers. The two began emailing each other, and by the third week of March when the first two-week camp would begin, Wyatt had fallen in love, he was sure. He’d ignored his niece’s reminders that the ‘U’ in the identifier stood for ‘Unknown Gender.’ He was attracted to the applicant, and nothing could change his mind.
Would he still feel that way when he set eyes on U-4-NY?

Talbot Andrews wasn’t living his best life. He was twenty-seven, living in his parents’ basement because it was safe, and he was growing out of his wardrobe. He was a Gold Star gay man in the sense that he was still a virgin in every definition of the word. He wrote a weight loss blog, which was his best work of fiction to date because Tal didn’t lose weight and keep it off as he bragged to his readers. The blog had acquired various sponsors, becoming his sole means of income, so he couldn’t come clean with his subscribers and tell them he was a liar. Thus, the charade continued.
While scanning a recipe website, he found an advertisement for a weight loss camp in the Hill Country of Texas. As he read the ad, something inside him seemed to click, and the next thing he knew, he was applying for admittance. He decided to be totally honest on his application, and when he had to write an essay regarding why he wanted to lose the weight, he poured his heart out, embarrassment be damned.
One day when he opened his inbox, there was an email from W. Smothers of Smothers Ranch where the camp would take place. The man’s kind words sparked something in Tal, and he began his weight loss journey, refusing to allow his mother to deter him from his mission to go to Texas, meet the cowboy, and hopefully, live his happily ever after.
Was it too much for a man to ask?
Please Note: This book contains material which may be offensive to some readers. It includes graphic language, adult situations, and descriptions of sexual activity between two, consenting adult males. This fictional story is intended for adults over 18 and is approximately 93,000 words in length and is the first book in the two book ‘Weighting…’ series.
TRIGGER WARNING: This book deals with sensitive issues associated with weight-loss struggles, body image, and self-acceptance. If any of these issues are a trigger, please proceed the caution. I hope you enjoy it.
I grew up in the rural Midwest before moving to the East Coast with a dashing young man who swept me off my feet, and we've now settled in the desert of Nevada. I write M/M contemporary romance, subgenres: sweet low angst, age-gap, cowboys, mysteries, and military/mercenary to name a few. I am a firm believer in "Love is Love" regardless of how it presents itself, and I'm a staunch ally of the LGBTQIA+ community.
I have a loving, supportive family, and I feel blessed by the universe and thankful every day for all I have been given. I’m old enough to know how to have fun, but too old to care what others think about my definition of a good time. In my heart and soul, I believe I hit the cosmic jackpot. Cheers!
Dreadful. This went beyond skimming I skipped whole essays/pages to get this far! I don't get the characters, any of them. The situation is too contrived. Pages and pages of unnecessary info.
The 'the person you emailed a few times then devolped a huge crush on is male not female, so try it out' pep talks were just weird. And the crush is creepy.
This book is so full of BS and contradictions, I don't even know where to begin. First of all: why should a guy like Tal, who seems to make easy friends with the people he meets at the ranch be such an awkward, rejected and reclused person at home. A mama's boy, with a mama who fatfeeds him. And how does he earn his living? With his not so successful blog? And how would his brother who is more athletic and not overweight been able to get a spot at this weightloss program? Never explained and never comprehensible.
The way the brother leaves him at the airport because he gets out of nowhere a photographing job in another country... Quote >"What about your luggage?" he asked. He saw his big brother's glowing smile. "Just take it with you to the ranch. I'll buy what I need. "< 😳 BS, BS, BS
And then there are these parts of a dialogue that mostly become a loooong monologue. Yadda, yadda, yadda.... I only read up to the first lovescene (overly sappy und not realistic) and then had to stop reading....
Enjoyable and compelling storytelling accompanying interesting and empathetic characters raise this story to a loftier height. With its sensitivity to the struggles of weight loss and weight gain and societies negative views of those struggling and suffering from the effects of obesity and and the stigma attached, Sam Kramer has carved a heartwarming and uplifting story of overcoming one's obstacles and being true to oneself. As the Queen Mother of Drag ends her show, "If you can't love yourself, how in the hell are you going to love someone else? Can I get an Amen up in here?"
I really enjoyed reading this book. It deals with weight issues and self perception which are big issues today especially in the gay community. Talbot is overweight and has tried several diets to lose his weight. Wyatt is a retired rodeo champion. Wyatt’s sister comes up with the idea to turn their ranch into a weight loss retreat to help people lose weight and to bring in much needed income. Talbot and Wyatt begin e mailing over the details and Wyatt thinks Talbot is a female. Well imagine their surprise when they meet. But the story does not end there. Talbot and Wyatt become good friends and develop feelings for each other. But not Wyatt is not ready for them. Plus there are some shady dealings going on with the ranch. These two men must make some hard choices if they want to be happy.
I expected to like this more than I did. The speed at which the characters lose weight is unrealistic and seems dangerous. I'm not a fan of women being called whores. Wyatt going from "I can't be gay!!!!1" to "gender never mattered to me, it's about the person" was a stretch to say the least. I don't like Wyatt, the chemistry between him and Tal seems artificial and there is SO MUCH MONOLOGUING in this book. I'm reading this on my phone and sometimes it's one person speaking for more than a page! And it's repetitive and preachy and just not very fun to read. The premise was alright, the intention of a fat mc who's loved for who he is was fantastic but the execution is not it at all. I'm so disappointed.
This story had a lot of promise, but it was clunky in parts. I enjoyed it overall but found myself getting bogged down in repetitive descriptors. I think it tried to have too many plots and lost the thread for a bit, but the ending was a nice wrap-up. Overall it was a good cowboy, pan-awakening story and I will probably read book 2 because I do want to follow their story.
Tal has struggled with his weight for a long time and takes the opportunity to visit the Smothers ranch to work on his health. Wyatt Smothers is helping his siblings run the camp and falls for Tal Sweet story line but for heavens sake . Wyatt can’t seem to talk when he needs to and Tal is endlessly doubting everything that happens between them. They are the poster couple for lack of and miscommunication. When they finally talked things got sorted but why or why did they wait so long to do it? (Yes, I know it’s needed to drive the plot sometimes but this was overkill)
4.3 stars. Wyatt and Talbot's story is the initial book in this series. Based on a weight-loss Texan ranch, Kraemer draws the contrasts in unexpected assumptions and duplicitous family and neighbors into an angst filled evolution of a first timer and newly bisexual relationship. A lot of self-discovery and-learning goes on, with the story continuing on in the series.
The premis of this book was very interesting but the execution was a bit awkward until the last part of the book. Throughout the entire book Wyatt was apologizing and Tal was questioning himself. Through every. part. of the book. It became tedious and made the beginning of their relationship and even their first sex kind of uncomfortable to read about. It might just be me but that's how I felt. Things melded together a bit better towards the end but I didn't finish the book feeling like either one of these guys was secure in their relationship. Odd.
Took me a bit to get into it, but after that it was really good,. I enjoyed the story and how it came together. The meaning behind the scenes and the discovery of ... will not going to tell you. Read the book and find out.
I actually read the boxset which was absolutely amazing and ultimate family drama plus the feelgood of being it a story around cowboys and a weight loss camp. I all starts when the Smothers family needs a boost of income to rescue their ranch and Wyatt's sister comes up with the idea of hosting a weight loss camp for 2-4 weeks. Wyatt is the ultimate cowboy who retired from his rodeo years to help out on the farm. At first, he objects to the idea, but the influx of money is a welcome idea. For reasons he doesn't know, he starts emailing with one of the applicants and secretly falls in love with this person. Big surprise when the woman turns up and appears to be a man. Wyatt is in turmoil, because although he had a lot of sex with women during his rodeo years as was expected of him, it never really satisfied him. But he is straight, isn't he? Talbot has been overweighted all his life due to his sickness as an infant, but openly gay, and the mixed emotions coming from Wyatt makes him even more insecure. In book 2 it all comes together, and Wyat realises he can't live without Talbot. He keeps him sane and makes him a better man, even when it looks Wyatt has a son. So, when Talbot drops the question, he doesn't need to think it over. On their honeymoon to Vegas, they rescue Wyatt's younger brother Ricky from himself and out of the clutches from some unsavoury men and send them to a rehab centre. And although Wyatt is still angry with Ricky about the hurtful things he said and done, he's still family and hopes he will return to the ranch and back into the family hold. In book 3 Wyatt and Talbot become fathers overnight with three little kids and their uncle. Falling in love immediately it won't be an easy road until social services agree they will be the most loving parents for the kids and make it possible to adopt and become the extended family they so long for. But with the help of the rest of the family they make it work. Now there's only one person left to be included in their family happiness. It's a very enjoyable read and it grips you from the start. You'll have problems putting it aside. Definitely worth the 5 stars.
Weight for Love is the first book in the Weighting series by author Sam E. Kraemer. This book is pretty good. I liked the themes it explores. Kinda harps too much in places but the overall storyline is really good. Wyatt is a retired rodeo bronco rider. He helps run the family ranch. When they start losing money big time his sister suggests a new option to bring in money. Weight Loss Camp. While Wyatt is not on board at first, he soon warms to the idea. They vet each person they have come out. While going over an application he feels connected to one candidate. So, he starts emailing this person. He thinks it is a woman. He actually starts to have real feelings for them. but when he meets her, he finds out she is really a he. Can he accept that love does not always come in the package we expect? Actually, he has a really hard time with it. He is cold at first and I was starting to not like him at all. But then we got to see the caring, sweet side of him and well that is worth saving. Talbot has been living in his parent’s basement. He has love self-esteem and needs to lose some major weight. He loves emailing the owner of the camp he is going to. I loved Talbot’s strength. He has more than even he knows he has. He is a good soul and deserves to feel loved and cared for. Overall pretty good read. A little bit of a slow burn does deal with sensitive subjects in a good way. I am looking forward to the next book in this series I would love to see where these lovers go next.
2.5 rounded down, although I really did contemplate rounding up instead. The relationship between Wyatt and Tal was romantic and sugar sweet with just a touch of steam. Don’t expect a whack of chapters-long steam, but there’s a little peppered in. Mostly though, this was focused on telling a love story so sweet it could give you cavities. Honestly it was a bit much for me and I felt like it was laid on a bit too strong for me to really buy in.
I felt like the plot needed work in terms of the Wynn Lambert and Ricky plot lines, and felt like there was a lot of lost potential. Also, who spends three million dollars on improvements to the farm to create a weight loss camp and then host it twice in the spring and twice in the fall???
I did like the slow and sweet development of Wyatt and Tal’s relationship, and some of the side characters such as Ike, Donna Jo, and Harley were a nice addition. I will say that Harley was way too wise for a teenager, though.
There’s two more books in this trilogy but I can’t see myself continuing with it.
(Also there were quite a few editing mistakes throughout the book, as a warning for folks who are bothered by that.)
A sweet story of a man, overweight, and a cowboy trying to save his ranch from failure. Wyatt and his siblings had come up with a new plan to save their ranch by hosting a weight loss two-week healthy and exercise program. Their neighbor bought 500 acres from them s that they had money to make the changes necessary to pull this off.
Talbot found the advertisement and decided he would apply to the ranch. His essay moved Wyatt and through continued communication, they fell i love with each other--one small problem--Wyatt thought he was talking with a woman, not a gay man.
The story isn't just about Wyatt finding that it wasn't the gender or the sexual orientation that he fell in love with, but Talbot's insecurities that caused them to pull apart while their neighbor had been stealing cattle from their farm and was trying to get Wyatt's sister to marry him, so that he could take over the ranch.
A very sweet story of seeing the inside of people and following your heart, not what others will think about who you are with or who you are.
Sam E. Kraemer's Weighting for Love is the first book in The Weighting series. It is a a gay for you cowboy romance between a gay fluffy weightloss blogger and the previously straight and fit ex-rodeo star. One man is about to find himself open to a different idea of love and attraction and the other is about to find a new motivation.. and both of their lives are changing. Its sweet with a splash of sexy scenes, it's got some humor and some drama. I fell in love with Tal and Wyatt and I can not wait for the next installment of their wonderful love story.
I received an advanced reader's copy of the book and I am voluntarily leaving my honest review and recommendation.
The premise was good, but I found it did not live up to my expectations. A bit long winded and lots of third person referrals 'the cowboy' did this or that. Lots of stereotypes in as well. The first 25% led us up to the car crash that was Wyatt realising Tal wasn't a woman. It's not til the end that we find out why Tal has been smothered (the family names are the wrong way round!!) by his mother. But why he is still living at home is not - other than maybe income is not high from a blog. Wyatt and the Texas crew went between stereotypical Texan good ol' boys to understanding to nasty pieces of work, so we bounced around a lot and sometimes I felt we jumped the story at times. The latter part of the book seemed to go for a while.
This story of a love that develops between a plus size New Yorker and a 'straight' cowboy from Texas is a very enjoyable read, especially if you appreciate an original story and a GFY trope. Talbot, like many overweight people, suffers from low self esteem and doesn't feel worthy of love or a man's attention. Wyatt, a hot ex-rodeo cowboy who's never fallen in love, is intrigued by Talbot's application to visit the weight loss camp his family is running on their Texas ranch. There are a few twists and turns, and the inner struggles these characters go through make it all the more a worthwhile read. Recommended!
This book covers an issue close to my heart because my sister is on a journey to better health and a search for a place mentally where she can see how beautiful she is and not judge herself by how she thinks others perceive her. Yes, there are cruel people out there... but fuck them! Life is for living and enjoying! Sadly, one of the hardest things for those who are constantly fighting their weight is to learn to love themselves... so we must show them how beautiful they are inside and out... and of course, encourage healthy eating and fun exercise!
I found this story to be a bit slow, but I really thought the characters were excellent!
They s is the perfect gift for someone down on themselves - seeing yourself from someone that loves
Talbot is done being the fat guy. He going to try this ranch and pray he looses the weight. Cowboy & ex Bronx rider Wyatt is grasping at straws to save the family ranch. His sister comes up with the plan and they work together to make it happen - well most work together. This is a rewarding book of destructive behavior and rewarding yourself. Healthy living not just diet & exercise but body, mind and soul and I love this story holds that sentiment. Don't stop there is drama, Intrigue and plot twist to keep you hooked. Great MM Romance!
This book had such an interesting plot I couldn't wait to read it, and it didn't disappoint. Talbot has always had a weight problem and when he sees an add for a weight loss camp at a horse and cattle ranch he signs up. Wyatt is a retired bronco rider working on his family's ranch. When he begins corresponding to Tal before the camp begins. A misunderstanding ensues and the rest of the story is is a fascinating account of how Tal and Wyatt get to know each other and come to accept their life together growing along the way.
The story started well and the trope seemed interesting. But then I just got annoyed by a specific feature of the writing style: in the chapters written from Wyatt’s point of view, Talbot was constantly referred to as “the blond”, “the gorgeous blond”, or by his full name and last name which really sounded weird when a MC refers to his love interest. The same happens in the chapters written from Tal POV when Wyatt was only referred to as “the cowboy” or by his full name.
It was just an ok read for me, but Wyatt and Tal did not conquer my interest enough to continue reading their story.
Wyatt and Tal's love story was beautifully written and touched me as well. I can totally emphasize with Talbot on being bullied way back when I was in school and again a few months ago.
The author was also thoughtful enough to provide trigger warnings as well.
I like the fact that Talbot really wanted to make the changes for himself before he even went to the ranch. I think he really just needed something to give him a jump start. I also like the fact that even when he got home he continued to work on himself. While there are some are some elements that probably wouldn't happen in real life it is still an enjoyable with a great ending.
I really wanted to like this but I really struggled to get into the characters. There seem to be paragraphs upon paragraphs of descriptions of incidental stuff, whilst it felt like the relationship details were happening off-page - we were being told stuff instead of being shown it. Gave up at 36%.
Well written story and well developed characters! The Circle S Ranch is in trouble. The four family members, after some heated discussion, decided to try being a weight loss ranch! Hopefully it works!
37% Awesome idea. Horrible execution and chaotic writing. I normally don't rate DNFs but this was so bad and it pissed me off because it's such a great story idea.
