Anti-Racist Leadership: How to Transform Corporate Culture in a Race-Conscious World

Rate this book
Business leaders who are ready to take a bold stance to make the world better for their employees, consumers, and community: read this book.

This book is not apolitical. This book is explicitly anti-racist. This book takes the stance that Black Lives Matter, LGBTQIA+ rights are human rights, people of all abilities deserve respect and access, and people of all genders have the right to sovereignty over their identities. This book acknowledges that capitalism is built on a foundation of systemic racism.

Business leaders, you hold an important position in the power structure, and you have the unique ability to reach thousands of employees and millions of consumers with your leadership. It's time for you to build a truly diverse, equitable, and inclusive work environment.

This book is the comprehensive plan for leaders who are ready to get serious about diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) and creating an anti-racist company culture.

Transformational leader James D. White has gained a deep understanding of how to operationalize and integrate DEI agendas as a leader with 30+ years of experience at large companies and as his lived experience as a Black man at that highest levels of corporate America. Most recently he was CEO and Chairman of the global smoothie chain Jamba Juice, where he led a remarkable turnaround to make it a model of strong performance built on a foundation of a deeply diverse, anti-racist culture. And he draws on the experiences of other leaders on the vanguard of DEI. White also writes with his daughter, who brings to her father and to this book the eyes, ears, and heart of a younger generation devoted to equity and inclusion and intent on justice.

Practical lessons and real-world examples of techniques used by best practitioners will empower leaders who are asking themselves at this urgent moment what so many have asked White: What can I do?

As Stevo’s Novel Ideas, I am a long-time book reviewer, member of the media, an Influencer, and a content provider. I received this book as a free review copy from either the publisher, a publicist, or the author, and have not been compensated for reviewing or recommending it.

This book was Stevo's Business Book of the Week for the week of 5/22, as selected by Stevo's Book Reviews on the Internet and Stevo's Novel Ideas. Building anti-racist companies by design creates great places to work for all.

As the CEO of the global smoothie chain Jamba Juice, James D. White built his company based on diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) principles, years before the model hit the mainstream. In "Anti-Racist Leadership," written with his daughter, he stresses that company transformation starts at the top: CEOs and board members.

Noting that he's taking on a system based on discrimination, White stresses that the most important action that these CEOs and board members must take is to develop a culture of inclusion at all levels, acknowledging that the greater variety of people you have in a room, the more innovation you'll have, as well as better awareness of trends, markets, and risk.

I especially admire White's call for the addition of a Chief Diversity Officer (CDO) who is committed to achieving DEI, with enough authority to change the company culture and eliminate racism and bias.

"Anti-Racist Leadership" is not only a call for increased company DEI, but a framework for achieving it.

An outstanding read for any leader in any industry! Mr White lays out a practical guide to being an anti-racist leader, based on data and experience. While targeted at board members/CEOs/business owners, all leaders can glean strategies from this book to help create a diverse and inclusive environment.

Ms White’s voice is reflected throughout for emerging leaders of future generations.

This is important and will help you to deliver better products and services.

Amazing! I love that James D. White wrote this with his daughter, Krista, with so many lived and interesting examples. The takeaways and checklists at the end of each chapter will be super useful, as is the extensive resource list provided. The diversifying supply chain chapter was probably my favorite, but I loved the entire book and hope I am able to implement their suggestions throughout my career/life.

This was an insightful book about pushing corporate culture towards inclusivity, diversity, and equity. James White detailed multiple studies that showed how an inclusive workplace benefits not only the company as a whole, but its employees, leaders, and customers. There were many excellent thought-provoking stories and ideas for improving the corporate culture which I, as a mid-level corporate leader, would like to expand upon and include within my own team.

Understanding that I am not the ideal target audience, I would like to say most of this information was surface level helpful.

There are some great ideas and some easy to implement practices but in general it felt like a who’s who in big corp name dropping.

The most interesting parts were about other C suite leaders success stories and how they were ahead of the curve.
