Another Chance: A Pale Rider Time Travel, Alternate History Book

Rate this book
Jack Reacher meets the American Revolution in this exhilarating time travel alternate history series! (updated cover!)

Thomas Nelson has traveled back in time to help George Washington survive the beginning of the American Revolution and change the course of history for the better. And he accomplishes that mighty task.
But he’s not finished.

Instead of riding off into anonymity to live with the woman he’s fallen in love with in 1777, General Washington has a request for Thomas, the Pale Rider, one that would alter the outcome of the war for the better. The French, and their support of the colonists, is at stake.

If the French support England in the war, then the colonists have lost the war before it’s barely begun. But if they can convince the French to send money and ships to aid the colonists instead, as Lafayette believes they will, then the tides could easily turn in the colonists’ favor.

To accomplish this, with a new rank as Major and command of a ship under Captain John Paul Jones, Thomas follows Washington’s directive to do the impossible – assassinate the man who has King George’s ear and is advising the King to stop the French support of the colonies.

If Thomas can do this, then French support for the colonists is assured.

If . . .

Never one to back down from the impossible, Thomas takes on this charge, overcomes insurmountable obstacles, and sails to England. With the help of Lafayette and a few other notable and influential men, he sets his sights on sneaking into Windsor Place to assassinate the King’s closest adviser.

Can the Thomas, the elusive Pale Rider, pull off the impossible again, and set the American Revolution on a course for victory?

I think that the characters were really interesting. I was entertained. I felt like I was in the scenes with the characters. The narrative won me easily into the book.
I received this as an arc from Booksprout and freely left a review.

Another outstanding tale

Book two of the series and I am loving every word of the tale. You live the moment with Thomas as he struggles to help America win its independence. I can hardly wait for the next book.

Non-stop action and adventure, awesome book

This sequel, like the first book spins a great alternate history. It is non-stop action and a roaring good time. Bringing in historical characters in different ways, and different situations with spins left and right. I can't wait to read the next book.

Action and History

Stunning and yet funny.
Thomas is at it again making his usual speedy decisions and turning history on its ear. This second book carries on with Thomas and his group of patriots fighting to prevent an alternative ending to the American Revolution ending up with the very evil and vicious British King George 3 and his minions change the outcome in their favor.
The usual suspects again turn the bad guys away from decisive victories that lost the war and the hope for democracy and self government sought by the colonies.
This is a ripping good story, with page turning suspense and thrilling action by the determined h
istory revising brave fighters.
I can't wait for the next book.
If you don't read any other TT adventures you'll want to indulge in these.
Outstanding and exciting.

Amazing sequel

This is one of the rare sequels that exceeds its predecessor. The story pulls you into a world that could have been, and holds you there until the final page.

A good sequel for a unique alternate history

This is a sequel as good as the first book. It carries an alternate history in which our reality is the alternate future. The MC continues to be both human and super heroic. New familiar historical characters behave exactly as one would expect them to react to him and with each other. This may be better than the first book I am looking forward to the next

It has a simplicity that is okay.

Not great, just okay. It is a quick read that is enjoyable. This is a basic story to cover an interesting idea. I'll finish the series but am in no way overly eager to do so.

Lots of action

Good story with lots of action. I enjoy alternative history stories and I haven't found a lot for this time period. I will definitely read the 3rd book.

This is the 2nd book in a planned trilogy and you definitely want to read the first book as this one picks up not long after the first and is a linear story. So you wont know whats going on if you start here. If you have already read book 1 what on earth are you doing reading a review of book 2? LOL I loved book 1 so I immediately bought this one and it is every bit as good as the first book. I really enjoyed this. Its always fun to see a person from today wreaking havoc on bad guys in the past.

I wish they would have sent him with a solar charger for his phone, they did not talk about one but he is quite concerned about its battery when he does use it. But it seems like it would be a simple thing to do then it would give him a data repository long after a single battery charge. But what I really wish was that book 3 was out NOW so I could read it now. If you like alternate history, time travel and adventure this will be right up your alley. You get to meet some fun characters from history including Ben Franklin, and King Louis plus more time with Lafayette who I have never thought of as a young man.

It is not often that an alternate history time travel book makes me learn something new but this one did. One of my best friends grew up on Lafayette street in the small Indiana town I grew up in. I have studied the exploits of the great Gilbert du Motier, Marquis de La Fayette but I guess I never realized that he was 19 years old when he was made a major general or that he became an officer at 13 years old! I should add that I did not learn that part from the book I had looked up his age because of him being depicted as a young man. He was only 23 years old when he was made a senior commander in the continental army. Amazing.

Anyway back to the book its a lot of fun and if you like history and adventure and alternate history you should absolutely read this book. BTW this is technically a time travel book in that the main character is from the future, but his time travel happened in the first book. So if you are hoping for hopping from the future to the past and back again that does not happen.

You really have to suspend disbelief for some of the plot

Some of the situations the Pale Rider tests himself out of are a!most cartoonish. I'll thread the last book but . . . A little more character development would be nice. As such the book is a little like watching a cartoon. But it's entertaining.

A pretty good yarn.

This book, like this first , is filled with lots of action. My biggest complaint is that Thomas frequently uses phrases that would be totally senseless to those living in the 18th century. One example is "covering her bases." Examples such as this occur frequently, with reaction from those that hear it.

The second book in the Second Chance Alternative History Book series, this one finds Thomas, our hero, heading to France and a meeting with Ben Franklin and John Adams, in preparation for his trip to England and his assassination attempt on King George's main advisor. It's all pretty convoluted, but lots of fun and action.

This is better than history!

This was like living history, and I was so caught up in this history. That I could not put this book down. Yeah, it was so exciting, and it was, let's say, thrilling. I actually cried at the end, and now I can hardly wait to start the next book. Which I'm going to start right away.

Thomas Nelson 008?

Okay I enjoyed this book, read it in under 12 hours Saturday and moved n to book three. The fight scenes are more realistic than many hero adventure type stories but if I ever meet Thomas I want to be on his good side.

quite the tale of adventure years from home

assasin for America best describes this one. pale Rider strikes again against England. I enjoyed the details of bringing the fight overseas. The secondary characters made sense, accurate to that time.

Another Chance (Pale Rider Alternative History Book 2)

Another chance was just as fast paced and interesting as Second Chance. I am finding the alternative history and the time travel concepts to be quite engaging.

Good

I enjoyed this story a lot. I was dubious about the goals and their repercussions. Such an event could easily have had the opposite effect. Even so, I'll need the next one to find out!

Interesting concept . It's like Jack Reached gets place in the series Turn. Lots of fun action.

Wierdly sci-fi with a great history feel mixed with Jack Reached slash Rambo. A really fun read which is not deep but full of action.

Good fast moving story with lots of action. Sometimes the hero is a little too lucky but that happens in most blockbuster movies too. Good read

Loving this series

As in most time travel stories, it is easy to laugh at certain things and say that this or that are impossible, but you just enjoy the story. Part swash buckling, part special forces, it's just fun.

Another Chance is the second book in a time-travel alternate history series. In this case, the history as we knew it was that the British won the American Revolution and have since ruled the world with an iron fist. Thomas Nelson is sent back in time in a ship or device that appears to be of alien origin. His mission was to release George Washington from being captured by the British, help the Continental Army win the Battle of Saratoga, and help get supplies to Valley Forge. He has been sent back with the premise that if he can get the French to join the war effort on the Continentals’ side, they will be victorious.

In the first book, Second Chance, Nelson managed to do the first three. Another Chance finds the French still hesitant to join the war effort. George Washington, Lafayette, and others come up with the idea to have Pale Rider, Nelson’s feared alias, travel to England and kill the Prime Minister, who is the King’s closest adviser and is advocating sending 70,000 troops to deal with the rebellion. It has to be done in secret, so Pale Rider’s actions won’t seem to be sanctioned by the Colonial Government.

The first problem is that “Pale Rider” and company must steal a British ship to sail to England. The Colonial government can’t just give him one. I thought it might have been easier to just have them steal a merchant ship out of a port the British haven’t blockaded, but that’s not how the story goes. Washington assigns John Paul Jones (not the Led Zeppelin bassist) to accompany them, since Nelson doesn’t have any sailing experience.

The result is a tale that’s filled with plenty of swashbuckling adventure and action, even if you have to suspend disbelief – a lot.

Let down

Author has no sense of time and distance. You can literally get anywhere in a day. Also, the main character only has debilitating injuries that last day.
