The thirteenth " Mountain Man" adventure from JJ Bonham has arrived!
Uzziah and Immanuel get a tumbler pigeon message that something may be happening at the settlement. A horse race had been arranged, and all those around the Vrain Trading Post (and some Crows, too) were in it. At the settlement, Uzziah got a letter from Porter Rockwell, the personal bodyguard of Joseph Smith, the Mormon leader. Smith had been killed in Carthage and the remaining Mormons needed mountain men to guide them west across the Rockies. Immanuel and Uzziah go to their aid, and when they arrive at the winter quarters, Rockwell takes them up to the cemetery where 400 perished in the winter camp and reveals that he had brought Hannah’s coffin with him from Nauvoo. The crossing to the salty lake goes well, except for the usual breakdowns, starvations and mountain fever. Within a month’s travel of their destination, they get attacked by Comanches. Uzziah is taken prisoner. The Comanche are foiled, and Uzziah returns to the pilgrims. On the way back to the mountains, the Comanche strike again. Will this be the end of the two mountain men’s association with the Mormons? Will Uzziah go back to just being a mountain man and stop fretting about the blessing against the blade and bullet? And what will happen when Hannah and baby George are put into their final resting place in the highland meadow?
