"Over time, being the recipient of such unending and unconditional affection starts to make one feel worthy of such love, deserving even. Once you start accepting this love, you can't help but feel better" This observation by the author comes early on in his relationship to the beloved dog Zee Zee, but it explains and fuels all that ensues, the loss, the search, the tears, the help from strangers and the joy of reunion.
In a witty and efficient style of writing, Mr. Guerin invites us along on a search for a lost dog, but she is not just a missing pet, but a missing piece of a life, one that has to be retrieved, at any cost. And more than a missing pet is found here. A resurgence of a human relationship is achieved, and the two re-discoveries are beautiful things.
The way in which others respond to the plea for help in finding the missing Zee Zee reminds one of the 1987 Woody Allen movie Radio Days, which takes place in the 30s when the only media was radio and people stayed in touch by gathering around the set to hear what was going on. The story involved the radio report that a young girl had fallen down a well of sorts and was in grave danger.
People all over the city, sitting with their kids listening were horrified and they all did what they could, even if it was just praying, to help the family in such dire circumstances. All ended well, but the key is that when faced with a situation where a loved one was lost, or in danger, something is triggered in all of us to set things straight and relieve heartache. This same emotion and action on the part of strangers to help find Zee Zee demonstrates the power of love and caring and is a lesson for all of us.
Love is truly the answer here. If we lose it we must get it back. Find it here in this wonderful book.
