this one hurt, as expected . . .

"On two sides of the horizon, between the two banks of the river separating the world of the living from the world of the dead, stood two brothers - the elder dead, the younger still living. Neither of them aware that both had resolved to do the same thing."

and Fido gets to tell his story.

…Humans are already occupied with fighting among themselves. It’s sad thinking that meeting new types of intelligence would only make us create more enemies for ourselves.

Oh wow this book give me emotion rollercoaster, how cruel the world are for the eighty six especially Shin as we get to see it from his pov and sometimes other characters. Get to know the origin of his scarf and gun along with people behind them, they all teach & help him one and other. A little glimpse of his childhood memories, how loved he is and how affectionate his family are. Then there's the last chapter which I don't know what to say, it's like a glimpse of utopia that I don't know why makes me sad, if only it actually happened in his world though if it did then we won't have this series.

前傳短番外,一點一點揀起過去的巧思,搭配現時世界線的附錄,好看耶。

I knew this is a volume collection with short stories, but I really loved how all of them were building in chronological order and showing some more details about Shin, a few other characters and the world. Enjoyed it a lot.

4.5 STARS. AWESOME. As. Usual.

Seriously, I’ve never read a series like this one that never fails to disappoint.

DANG.

Where to start?

The backstory in this one. I though Shin was an amazing character before. Before I saw all of the poor kids trauma. Again, dang. It was brutal. You kind of already get the picture that Shin had it hard in the beginning, with his first squadrons but that does not compare with seeing it first hand. It just hit different to see Shin constantly left alone, everyone dying over and over AND OVER again.

So much backstory in this one.

You get the backstory for his scarf, his pistol, Fido (which was awesome), and how he started to carry the names of his comrades. All of it was so EPIC.

It was just so gut-wrenching to see Shin seeing so many tragic things as a child and how he dealt with it.

Something I’ve always appreciated about Shin is how he has a calm personality but he’s always kind and compassionate despite everything he’s been through. And even when he’s taught to kill people (AS A CHILD!!) to put them about if their misery, he still doesn’t lose that humanity part of him.

This one was just… DANG.

Go read it.

So much good character and references and just… ahhhh!!!

(ALSO, it’s no wonder about the imagery/his dreams about all of the previous dead Eighty-Six holding their own heads wiry what happened with Alice. This poor kid.)

Overall this is one I’m sure I’ll have to read again because of how many freaking details and references there are. This is one of those series that’s going to be a classic forever for a reason. In the same way books like The Hunger Games suck you in with their vivid imagery, compelling characters, and relevant social commentary, it’s just one that will always speak the the core of humanity and the struggles we face. Eighty-Six is one with so many parallels and references that I always find something new. It’s awesome.

(Extra Side Note: Okay. No one would get this except those who’ve seen AOT in 9 Minutes on YouTube. There’s this hilarious line between Mikasa and Armin.

“He’s not my boyfriend… yet.”

THEY USED THAT EXACTLY WITH LENA AND RITA/ANNETTE/HENRIETTA/WHATEVER HER NAME IS. I’m sure it was coincidence, but still… I can’t. It’s too good.)

CONTENT NOTE: Some uses of strong language and violence.

Great change of pace from the previous volumes that adds in a few short stories focusing on Shin's past and the events and people who made him who he is today. Some of the stories have some nice SOL content much like volume 7 which are always refreshing to read and I especially loved chapter 9's POV from an unexpected figure :3

86 volume 10 written by ASATO ASATO story takes place before the event of book 1 but still follows the main character. This is the 10th book in an ongoing series. Normally the 2 main characters Shinei Nouzen and Vladilena Milizé are in every book. But in this book Vladilena Milizé is missing because so far it takes place before the main story. This book follows the journey of the 86 who are child soldiers through multiple war zones. The book goes over some very controversial issues such as racism, child soldiers, and slavery. This novel is very engaging, funny at some points, and it has a very interesting and complex world.

An example of how engaging this book is in the first battle scene of the book the author starts out every page counting down one number or second. This scene had me on the edge of my seat the whole time. In this scene we see a younger version of the main character in his first engagement with the Legion. The Legion are AI controlled machines made by the Giadian Empire. The entire continent has been in a constant fight with the Legion for over a decade. Each page of the book can be so different because on one they could be laughing and the next they could be dying or about to.

As we saw in the previous paragraph, this book can be exciting and suspenseful. It can also be very comedic at some points due to the main character’s stoic attitude, but unexpected behavior. People who like adventure and deep story elements would love this book. Also there are some romantic elements, especially between the two main characters. Overall, I recommend this book to anyone who loves the thrill of the next page.

This particular volume was a collection of short stories from Shin's past, highlighting the various people and moments that turned him from a normal boy to the Grim Reaper we meet in the first volume. Every chapter was exceedingly hard to read, especially since the author didn't spare the gruesome details of some of the deaths, and it was worsened by the fact that we knew none of the people Shin met early on survived. But, in spite of the heartwrenching content, there were some moments of brightness among these chapters as well.

The chapter from Fido's pov was probably my favourite along with little bits of appendix at the end of the earlier chapters that showed the present condition of the surviving Eighty-Six. Yet, even though this was a very painful volume to read, it was also my favourite because we get to see Shin growing up, albeit in horrible conditions, and it makes the content slightly better, knowing that he survived and has now reasons for happiness and hope.

This volume went through a lot of backstory on the main character and showed how he developed to the person he is today. This volume had a very good writing compared to the others it really gave Shin personality and humanity and showed why he hides his emotions most of the time. It introduced more characters and gave them a role to play in shins life and gave Shin development. I personally liked this volume because I really wanted to know Shins past more and this volume delivered exactly what I wanted and I cant wait to see whats going to happen in the next volume because it never really gave us any clues on what the next mission is.

I liked the first few stories. they were really good and helped to see how Shin became the Reaper.
I didn't like to make a little story for Alice which i think should be right after her story.
I LOVED Fido's story. made me tear up.
I did like to see Kujo's last few days but i didn't feel like it was that important for Shin's being the Reaper.
Instead of Raiden's perspective after 2weeks in the reconnaissance mission i would loved to see Haruto's last few day's as he died 2days before the last 5 left the 86th sector. Maybe Kaia as she 100% became legion. So maybe her booting up as legion at the end of her chapter.

This volume narrates the mosaics of Shin’s tragic experiences that has made him into a reaper.
But the silver lining of those experiences, he has come to see the world as more than just cruel, emotionally abusive and not worth living. For the same world that treated him harshly has also allowed him to experience multiple wonders and myriad of encounters of significant people that has drew stars around his scars and made the world a little bit better.

I think that’s what make this volume painfully beautiful.

P.S. FIDOOOOOOOO 😭😭😭😭😭🫵🫵🫵🫵🐐🐐🐐🐐

This Volume contained a bunch of short stories, most of which were about Shin and how he came to be the Reaper. My favorite chapter was 9. Chapter 9 was everything from Fido’s perspective! I loved all of it! The final chapter was what could have been. In the end it turned out to be a dream both Annette and Shin had. Shin (to himself) said he doesn’t think he would choose that “better” world as he wouldn’t have met everyone and experienced (the good things) that he has now. Can’t wait to read Volume 11!

I remember that many readers were disappointed because this volume goes back to Shin’s childhood instead of continuing the main timeline.

I’ll try not to spoil anything. This novel gives us a break from the complexity of the war and takes us back to Shin’s early years, showing how he became the Shin we know from Volume 1. We learn who he met, how he got the scarf and the gun, the promise he made, and even more about Fido.

Personally, I really enjoyed it. It adds emotional depth to Shin’s character and makes his actions in the main story feel more meaningful.

4.5 stars.

At first the idea of a "flashback volume" annoyed me because I assumed this was just a way to extend the runtime before the final story arc of the series... With each short story I began to understand Shin's internal feelings more and more leading up to how he currently acts and responds to others such as Lena.

I hope this builds back up into a grand final arc - I really do enjoy these characters and this world.

Huge bonus extra story from Fido's perspective too.

Volume 10 was a great break from the main story. It did an excellent job filling in some of the gaps surrounding Shin. Learning about Fido’s origins was incredible — I was actually crying by the end of that chapter. And the final chapter? A masterpiece. Having both Shin and Annette come to terms with the world they lost was perfect. Their situation may be tragic, but it also raises an important question: if the Legion had never come to be, would the Shin we know today truly be Shin?

No estoy llorando. Solo se me metió una basurita en el ojo.

[SPOILER]

No perdonaré a Asato por no hacer que Lena y Shin se vieran en el último capítulo, así no puedo hacer el chiste de "Te amo en todos los universos".

This short story collection adds very little new material to series but instead expands on Shin's history by fleshing out several episodes that were either hinted at or breezed over in main story. Overall, I thought it was very enjoyable, and it was blessedly railgun-free.

This volume gave me back the initial feelings of reading the originals vol 1 and 2, plus watching the anime.

Frankly ep 3 to 9 were a bit repetitive as far as the fights went and I'm glad the author chose to revisit the very beginnings of some of the characters.

A heartbreaking set of short stories, but well worth the read. I wanted a bit more of Shin and Raiden’s first encounter, but other than that, it was near perfect — that last piece in particular hit pretty hard.

A collection of short stories detailing Shin’s background in the 86th sector and how he became the notorious Reaper. Genuinely, the stories were both gruesome and heartbreaking all at once. Fido’s story?? God just stab me in the ribs next time Asato it’ll hurt less. But overall super good!

Honestly this was pretty good. I didn’t really have high expectations for this because it wasn’t part of the main story but I still enjoyed it. It answered some questions about Fido and how Shin became who he is. It was also nice reminder of who he was before Lena and his survival.

cute (okay more like harrowing) short stories about little shin! Although they were interesting and gave me more insight into shin's past, they didn't really add anything new to the series
