Why would someone kill Nathan King? The peace of a perfect November afternoon is shattered when Agatha hears the frantic bleating of goats across the river from her B&B. Agatha kayaks over with retired detective Tony and two guests--Bishop Henry and his wife Emma. They find the goats huddled together in a terrified group and Nathan lying face up beneath the Live Oak trees, lifeless eyes staring at the Texas sky. Then one of Agatha’s guests goes missing. She delves into Joey’s past and learns he was Dead Broke, so what was he doing vacationing at her B&B? And why was he pretending to be Amish when in fact his permanent address was Dallas, Texas? Most importantly, did Joey have anything to do with Nathan’s death? Agatha and Tony are at a dead end before the investigation has properly begun, but this time they receive help from unexpected places. Bishop Henry has a gift, and he’s no longer afraid to use it, even if doing so may put them all in danger as they work together to catch a killer. Dead Broke is a story about family secrets, rare gifts, and the joy of unexpected friendships.

A light, easy cozy mystery that offered a nice escape from today's realities.
What a delightful book....Amish , quirky murder mystery. It had great characters. I will read the first in this short series soon. Thanks for the giveaway win!
This cozy mystery grabbed me in from the beginning. The story moved along at a fast pace and I found it to be filled with unpredictable events that kept this reader flipping pages to the books end. I loved that two old friends from Vannetta Chapman's Bishop Series were included in this book. Bishop Henry Lapp and Emma join Agatha Lapp and Tony Vargas in solving this murder Mystery. Readers are treated to a mystery within another mystery. You will see what I'm talking about when you get about midway through the book. This is definitely edge of seat reading from time to time. Very well written and I enjoyed the book. I recommend Dead Broke to readers of Amish Fiction and Cozy Mysteries. This is the second book of Agatha's Amish B&B series but it can be read as a stand alone. I won an ebook copy of this book in a Goodreads giveaway. A favorable review was not requested. All opinions expressed here are my own.
I enjoyed this cozy mystery so much! Dead Broke is book two in the series, but I think readers could jump in and enjoy this book even if they haven’t read book one, Dead Wrong. However, the main characters are introduced in book one and both books are charming.
I really like the cozy feel to these stories. Agatha and Tony are people that I feel like I could sit down and enjoy an afternoon talking with. I love the setting of the Texas Hill Country and the mixture of Amish and Englisch working together to solve an unexpected murder.
I liked the secondary characters in this novel, Emma and Henry. They are characters from a series that I haven’t read, but I found that I really liked both of them, and was intrigued by Henry’s ability.
Dead Broke was a great cozy mystery that kept me glued to the pages from start to finish.
I received a complimentary copy of this book. All opinions are my own.
This novel by Vannetta Chapman grabbed my attention from the beginning till the end. I enjoyed this tale and read it in a day, that’s how amazing the story is. It was delightful to find that Bishop Henry and Emma Lapp are vacationing at Agatha’s Amish B& B when another murder occurred in Hunt, Texas. The Lapp’s are from Chapman’s The Amish Bishop Mysteries series.
This is a fast paced, action filled novel with a second mystery surrounding the cozy mystery Chapman created. The characters were dimensional, some sneaking, other forthright and realistic. The clues along the way made you think a particular character murdered Nathan King but other clues dismissed that. So who is the murderer and why when Nathan was a devoted member of the Amish community?
I look forward to the next cozy mystery in this series, Agatha’s Amish B & B. I highly recommend this book to fans of Vannetta Chapman and Amish cozy mysteries.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author and was under no obligation to write a review. I have expressed my own opinion.
Another great book in this series. Loved that Henry and Emma were visiting (from the Amish Bishop Series). Vannetta Chapman has some great series if you are looking. One of my favorite authors who doesn't disappoint.
What a surprise to read this second book in one of many great series by a favorite author and find 2 beloved characters from another of her series, “The Amish Bishop series”! That was my favorite of Vannetta Chapman’s series up until now. I am unsure how reading this book would be for someone who hasn’t read the other series, or if I would have appreciated it as much if I’d not read them. All I can say is, anyone enjoying this series definitely should go back and read the 3 books in the other series and enjoy the slightly earlier stories of Bishop Henry and his Emma. I loved this story too, but I kind of saw it as fourth in the other series as much as 2nd in the new series...and am hoping this will not be the last I see of Henry and Emma, and of course, am looking forward to many more stories about Agatha and Tony and the B & B.
The book Dead Broke by Vannetta Chapman is so good. Once you start reading you are sitting on edge of your chair and can't put it down. I love how she brings in characters from her series What the Bishop Saw, into this series...fantastic book and once everyone needs to read
Once again Agatha finds herself involved in a mysterious murder at her B&B. Another Amish suspense from Vannetta Chapman. Her ability to slowly unravel the clues to make you wonder whodunnit is "wunderbar"! Amish murder mysteries. Sounds funny. The characters are believable and lovable. I couldn't put it down. I pre-ordered this cozy book after loving the first in the series Dead Wrong. I was not disappointed.
Can I enjoy a second book more than a first? Yes, I can. I read this book in less than a day and it pulled me in even faster than the first book. Welcome back to Agatha's Amish B&B and her Amish and English guests - where you guessed it, another murder happens....I won't give spoilers but this one is a bit more twisty and turn-y than the first (at least in my opinion). Just when I thought I had solved the whodunit, I was wrong. Again, like the first, this is a cozy, murder mystery and will be a quick read (I read it on my Kindle).
Agatha and Tony make a great detective team. When they are joined by experienced amateur sleuths Bishop Henry and his wife, the killer doesn't stand a chance. More than one mystery keeps the reader guessing on every page.
Another exciting installment in the life of Agatha's Amish B&B! No matter how hard she tries, she can't have peace and quiet in her life without some trouble thrown in here and there. I love that Vannetta has brought Henry and Emma from some of her other books in this series, and it seems like a great friendship will arise here. I have never read a book from Vannetta that I didn't love. She's so good at suspense, and makes you feel like you're right there with the characters. I can't wait for another B&B book!!!
What an unexpected delight when the author brought in characters from her other “Bishop” mystery series to be a part of this newer B&B mystery series! I read this in one day.
I have come to love each of Vanetta’s books. Each one I read is a pleasant and enjoyable story. This cozy is a fun mystery with great characters. I realized while reading this one that a couple of the characters have their own series already and I will be reading that one very soon. This one had a good mystery with several suspects and odd things going on during the story that kept me wondering how it would all end. Great read!!
I read this back to back with the first book in this series - Dead Wrong. Both were very interesting mysteries and I love Agatha and Tony and their friends. Hoping there will be a book 3.
This is book two in the Agatha’s Amish B&B series and could be read as a stand alone. But please don’t. Book one, Dead Wrong, is a great read and it will make reading this one a richer experience. And we also find a couple of favorite characters from the author’s “The Amish Bishop Series.” I love how they’re tied together.
A story of unlikely friendships, Agatha and Tony again work together to solve a murder. I enjoy seeing their relationship grow. But just how far can it go since Agatha is Amish and Tony is English? Regardless, they’re good friends who care for each other. They really are written true to life and I’d love to stay at Agatha’s B&B!
Chapman’s writing style is enjoyable. The story flows so well and the rhythm of it is relaxing. It’s not a constant on edge cozy mystery but occasionally comes down and is restful. But you know that trouble is always brewing in the background.
If you enjoy a cozy mystery and one with Amish ties, then please read Agatha’s Amish B&B series. It’s truly delightful.
I received a complimentary copy of this book but was not required to leave a review.
This new series by Vannetta Chapman is quite enjoyable. This is the second book and I find myself quite invested in the characters of this small Texas town. This mystery has even more twists and turns than the first, and the relationships between the characters continue to build. Looking forward to book #3.
I loved this book. It's helpful to read Dead Wrong before reading this but not entirely necessary. Great mystery book that involves Amish B&B owner, Agatha, and her friends. I was on the edge of my seat the entire time trying to figure out who murdered her Amish friend, Nathan. Thanks Vannetta for another wonderful book!
The second book in this series set in Hunt, TX brings B&B owner, Agatha, another dead body. This is one not on her property but she and neighbor, Tony, are the first on the scene. She has almost a full house at the B&B and several are not who they purport thenselves to be. The couple from her Bishop series are brought in to this series. Clean,, but not sappy, fiction.
This was a lovely read combining 2 of Vannettas series. Interesting to see Henry and Emma in a different setting and situation. A clever plot with several red herrings. As always Vannetta delivers an intriguing mystery without the need for bad language etc. Comforting to have the Amish faith intertwined. I recommend this book.
I have really enjoyed this series. Vannetta Chapman hides the murderer very well. I don't want to be able to guess who the killer is until I am close to the end. She keeps me guessing which will make me continue to read her books. I highly recommended this cozy mystery!!!
Dead Broke is the second action packed mystery written by Vannetta Chapman in her Agatha's Amish B &B series. The readers are brought back to Hunt, Texas for another dramatic story. I enjoyed each of the new guest staying at the B&B especially Bishop Henry which is a special character from a previous series. Bishop Henry is an accidental savant with the ability to draw intricate scenes from his subconscious. Each of the new guest seem to be hiding something but Agatha can't make heads or tails of it. When a murder of a dear friend occurs across the river from Agatha's B&B a whole new mystery evolves bringing back previous characters Tony and Gail to help solve it. This story is action packed and definitely keeps the readers interest. The author has done a fantastic job spinning this story and the conclusion will definitely leave the reader shocked.
I was not given a complimentary copy of this book to read and review. I was not approached to post a favorable response and all opinions expressed are my own. I have rated this story with five stars for meeting my expectations of a wonderful story that I can highly recommend to others.
Congratulations to Vannetta Chapman for writing another dramatic story for her readers enjoyment.
I love mysteries and secrets! And intrigued plot lines. This book fulfilled my expectations. I recommend this book for anyone that like solving mysteries. I'm a old Charlie Chan and Sherlock Holmes gal. And Nancy Drew and Hardy Boys... So finding that in a Amish book is awesome.
