Flawed Creatures

Rate this book
Some creatures are fatally flawed. I'm a thrill-seeker, a gambler, and a thief--playing whim to my Greed. However, my sins aren't what I have to fight right now... it's theirs.

Three men deemed too powerful and wrong to let live by our Council. They're too devious, too strong, too evil. An unhinged crazy incubus, an obsessive shape-shifting beast, and the Dullahan himself--scars, steed, and all.

Tricked, captured, captive. They plan to use my power, wield it as their own. I'm their golden ticket, their pot of gold. Kings, gods, and creatures have tried to use my kind and these three monsters are exactly the same. They know that when luck is on your side, the odds are never even.

There's an unstoppable hitman on their back and they need something that gives them the upper hand, a guarantee of success. And that something is me.

Long story short, no.

My only thought throughout this whole book was “What’s the fucking point of all this?”

At first I figured it was a slow start because they were taking the “slow burn why choose” route. I was 30% in and there was minimal contact between the FMC and the 3 love interests. As I kept reading it became clear to me that it was just dragging on all fronts.

When it comes to paranormal/monster romances I don’t mind an insta love trope but this is not that. They all went from using her to save their own asses to in love with her in .01 seconds.

You’ve got Puca, the shape shifting kind of cannibal god who is so obsessed with her, he wants to BE her. He’s been stalking her for weeks and then the first time they meet face to face he says he loves her.

Then you’ve got Lorcan, the demon incubus, who doesn’t wanna be a demon, who has been visiting her dreams every night and she doesn’t remember them. He claims to love her and says so in the dreams she cannot remember but actively avoids and refuses to see her when they’re awake.

And then you’ve got Dullahan who is a headless horseman and former/always king of the sidhe, and refuses to have a relationship with Lacey, but is also obsessed with her. Doesn’t say he loves her but he wants to protect her.

I wish this was better. I loved the idea of the leprachan lore, along with whatever Dullahan was. I wish we would have gotten more of what Puca is and Lorcan too.

I have to say I think the book would have been better without Lacey. I enjoyed the dynamic between each of the guys with each other. The romance between each of them is much more believable than each of them with Lacey.

If this was meant to be just smut, there wasn’t nearly enough. And if this was meant to have a plot, again, it didn’t have nearly enough. Also the smut is the only reason I’m not ranking this lower, but I wouldn’t say it’s worth trudging through the rest of it. 1.5 rounded up.

This was the LONGEST 361 page book I’ve ever read and the fact that it takes place is less than a month? Yikes.

I had to come back to this during the waking hours (I finished it at like 130 AM when I was supposed to be sleeping lol) because I wanted to do this ARC review justice.

First, I have to say I was super thrilled that I caught a coveted spot on Beatrix's ARC team for this, I really hope I can read for her again because she is my favorite OTT unhinged, semi-scary, definitely-not-for-everyone-character writer. In my opinion, it's her specialty. No one else can make me love a stalking, obsessed, absolutely unhinged murderous MMC like she can. And y’all lemme tell you - this book revolves around that type. And it was mind-blowingly good. I would put it as my favorite standalone RH book of 2022.

Second, it's going to be really hard for me not to share spoilers but I'm going to do my best because this book deserves to be read with fresh eyes and an open mind. (And maybe a reminder that this is fiction (duh, monsters, I know but still) and that we stan MMCs like this in fiction but not in IRL. Heh.) I'm going to start with the rating system I use for my IG posts so that if you want to just look at this and then stop there, that's totally fine!

🌶 Spice (K!nk & Variety of scenes): 4/5 (check the tws for this one, but WOW 🔥)
💦 Steam (Detail & amount of scenes): 5/5
💕 Romance (relationship dynamics): 4/5 (not super romantic in the traditional sense because of their unhinged personalities, but heavy desire and love shared/experienced in their own ways)
🌱 Character Growth/Arc: 5/5
📖 Plot: 5/5 + (amazing plot, great foreshadowing and worldbuilding, really interesting folklore reimagining)
🏳️‍🌈♿️ Inclusivity: 3/5 PolyA (RH with MM just as important as with the F), gay/bi/pan characters, they/he/her character (without having to explain/discuss labels)
⭐️ 5/5 Stars, absolutely would recommend

I absolutely adored the reimagining of Irish/Celtic folklore, as well as some Chinese folklore and Mesopotamian (fun fact: incubuses originated waaay back then). It was really fun to see the author's takes on the legends utilized and I felt like it was done in a respectful way. I was a huge fan of how Puca was handled and the way Dullahan's character made a point to use all of the appropriate pronouns for them in conversation (and internal dialogue) without making a big deal about it or batting an eye really.

The steam for this was off-the-charts hot and heavy (read: smut heavy *two thumbs up*) and the spice was excellent too. There's a tw for dubcon in the list that Beatrix includes (THANK YOU for such a comprehensive list) and I will say most of it is in relation to the incubus magic, just in case that was a "I don’t know if I can read this" factor for anyone else. I usually cannot handle dubcon and was OK with this book.

I can't comment much on the plot without giving anything away but it was really, really good and the plot is why I said this is easily my favorite standalone RH of the year. There were so many elements that I did not see coming and I loved that.

And finally, I can't not tell you my favorite character: it was nearly a really close tie between Puca & Dullahan but Dullahan won out by a hair because his dialogue was *fantastic*. A few of my least spoilery favorites:
"I'm living with a brothel of brats," he grumbled in annoyance...

I wasn't looking to kill though. I was looking to scare and subdue.

"I'd be happy you seemed to care if your care didn't come with sharp teeth," Dullahan growled.

And his bedroom antics? I can't share why else I loved him without giving too much away so I'll leave it at that lol.

TLDR: It was really really good and you need to read it when it releases 😬

This was just alright.

I would've enjoyed more world building and more information on all of the characters/creatures. Why is the council such a threat that these 3 super duper powerful beings would need "luck"?

This book has a LOT of sex, but zero chemistry or banter.

I didn't hate it, but I can't say I overly enjoyed it either. It was just... lacking.

3.4⭐️ I figured I wasn’t really in the mood to read about supernatural something until I started it. Nevertheless I went through, that’s telling me it couldn’t have been that bad. However in comparison to the other books I read from her, it lacked of tension and deeper feelings. The sex was „Beatrix Hollow like“…. Insane 😂
my favorite was the shapeshifter Puca, he was so obsessed with Lacey, stalked her, had a great kind of humor and gave a fuck about personal space….
So if you are into supernatural, sharing is caring, mmmf, a lot of crazy af sex, a bit of an adventure, then this one is for you.

I have a love/hate relationship with this book. I love the Celtic/Irish Lore, I adore the characters and I enjoyed the spicy scenes. The world building was beautifully done and I enjoyed each character arc.

However, there were several times where the book seemed to drag. In the moments that the characters weren’t enjoying each other or fighting it was extremely slow. I think that may be why I had such a hard time finishing it and deciding on the rating.

I love Beatrix and her writing, I just wish there was more action and less over-explanation.

this is so different from anything else I’ve read it was so refreshing and hooking the WHOLE time, and the setting being somewhere that isn’t america was also just as refreshing, it felt nice to explore somewhere else for once and with such a range of supernatural characters, some creatures which I’ve never heard of before, it was so intriguing to find out more! the plot was everything, it was so good and unique, and had so much smut in it but still managed to give the book a large amount of smut and a great storyline, i do wish it was a bit longer though to prolong everything a bit more but besides that I still felt like it flowed well and it all worked together, small books with more then two main characters can sometimes feel overwhelming but this book was able to pace each character perfectly enough that there was still development for each! I loved all four of the characters a lot, dullahan was my favourite but each of them bought something new and different to the book, and without one the book would’ve felt like it was missing something, I adore the how their stories were handled, each of them having their own small individual plot that intertwined with the main one made this read so much better and allowed me to get more of a feel for each character and how they deal with their own personal struggles! overall, an amazing and refreshing book that bought something unique to my reading experience with a great range of characters to love!

I could not put this down - these characters were certainly flawed and I loved everything about it. I never knew I needed a book about a leprechaun but Lacey was utter perfection and all her luck was hilarious to read. Dullahan has my heart but Puca and Lorcan seem to be the naughty ones you can’t stop spending time with. The art in the ebook was stunning and I loved having the visualizations of the characters before reading.

So amazing!

The Headless Horseman. A Flesh Eating Shapeshifter. An Icubus about to explode. The Luckiest Leprechaun.

...what more can you ask for?

This book was so good! I loved the world building. The characters were some of my favorite I've ever read! And the story was completely original. This was my first book by Beatrix Hollow but its definitely not going to be my last! I highly recommend it.

When a leprechaun, a skin walker, an incubus and the headless horseman join forces there's no telling the trouble they'll get into. Sounds like the start of a ridiculous joke but alas these are the MCs of Flawed Creatures. While I didn't love this like I did Cute but Psycho, the outrageous plot and monster porn made for a wild and hot read. Heroine Lacey is quite literally the luckiest leprechaun there is until three men show up and throw her luck out the window, worse yet they want to use her luck to protect themselves. Lacey's no fool though and does her best to make sure everything goes her way. Turns out the guys are on a hit list and simply being around them lands her her in her own pot of hot water. It's shocking given how much time they all spend f*cking that they skate by fairly unharmed. Lacey's luck sure helps as does having the king of the Sidhe on her side. Absolutely loved Lacey and her awesomeness, she's such a badass.

ARC reader! We have Lorcan (Incubus), Puca (shape-shifter) and Dullahan (headless horseman)! And Lacey, the lucky lady Leprechaun “Lady Luck”. I absolutely loved everything about this book. I wish we had more of their story though! I’m not ready to see these four go! But Remington…. Maybe we can see more of him and Lo Shen! Well done Beatrix! Can’t wait to see what you come up with next!

Leprechauns, Tigers, Zombies... oh my!

Beatrix Hollow has done it again in this invigorating, refreshing new tale! I absolutely loved Lacey and am loving Miss Lady Luck most of all! This book grabbed your attention from page one and you definitely did not want to stop turning the pages.

Greed is the game. Lacey is the name - and my oh my, it can be a shame. Always having the urge for more. More more more. - It can be a real downer. When Lacey meets the one and only headless horsemen, she is suddenly on edge for the first time in her life and is worried her luck might finally be running out.

When she is kidnapped by the terrifying man himself along with shapeshifter Puca and incubus Lorcan, she never guesses its for her luck itself. Turns out, these big bad men are on a hitlist and time is running out. Can Lacey's luck save these men? And when her greed turns from a pot of gold to lust, will she be able to resist their charms!?

I feel like my description does not do it justice. This book was great. I loved the new world she created and even enjoyed some of the side characters. While the men remain dark and foul, one this is for sure - Lacey is theirs! This book was steamy, different with just the right amount of crazy. I enjoyed it a lot and am looking forward to possibly having more in this world!

*Overall 4/5
*Heat? 4/5
*Multiple first person POV
*MMFM relationship
*Monsters and Irish story retelling
*Ends in HFN with hopes to continue, possibly?

OH MY GOSH WHAT THE FUCKKKKK
I have always wanted to read monster SMUT, not because I was afraid to love it, but I was afraid to hate it because I wanted to love it so much. But holy shit on a stick am I in love with Lacey. My cute little leprechaun God.

I always always always have a favorite “man” in a book. I guess man is the wrong term. I should say God, demon, and shifter lol. But I literally could not be fucking paid to pick a favorite here. They were all equally as hot, equally a spicy and equally as BA. And in their own way, they were all equally as obsessed with Lacey. Puca - the light hearted one (that sounds funny to even say after reading this.. Dullahan DADDY and SEX FIEND Lorchan

LISTEN TO ME RIGHT NOW, the moment that daddy Dullahan took it upon himself to take his head off of his own body and below Puca WHILST HE FUCKED HIM WAS THE MOMENT MY LIFE CHANGED FOREVER. I KNEW I HATED MEN, BUT I NEVER KNEW I LOVED MONSTERS UNTIL THIS VERY SECOND. THAT WAS ONE OF THE HOTTEST THINGS I HAVE EVER READ IN MY WHOLE ENTIRE LIFE, AND I HAVE READ SOME SHIT MY GUYS

If you were like me, and I have never opened your mind and your vag to the spoils of monster SMUT - I think this is a good one to start with. I am so excited on this journey. I’m about to embark on. LMAO.

WISH MY VIBRATOR LUCK, shes going on an adventure!

Book Review: Flawed Creatures by Beatrix Hollow
✨Why-Choose + Monsters + Irish Lore = my love language, baby✨

Okay listen… y’all already KNOW I’m a monster-loving, why-choose goblin gremlin and this book had me SCREAMING. Celtic/Irish lore? Inject it into my bloodstream. Fae chaos and ancient magic? YES PLEASE.

The boys? Chef’s kiss—every one of them made me want to scream, bite, and then apologise politely with a pint of Guinness. The spice? Spicy enough to summon a banshee. The world-building? Honestly, stunning. Felt like I was drowning in mist and magic and I wasn’t mad about it.

BUT—and here’s where the chaos simmers down for a sec—I had a complicated little situationship with this book. When the characters weren’t tangled in sheets or throwing hands, things slowed down. Like, really slowed down. I found myself side-eyeing entire chunks wondering when someone was going to bleed or moan again (don’t judge me).

I love Beatrix and her wild storytelling—this woman can write, no doubt—but I personally could’ve done with less lore dumps and more monster mayhem. I wanted a little more bite, a little less pondering, you know?

Final thoughts: I liked it. I’m glad I read it. The vibes? Immaculate. The pacing? Occasionally glacial.
Still… give me monsters who worship their chaotic queen and I’m THERE.

I received this book as an ARC in exchange for my honest review.

I'm not sure which of these hunks I've tripped over more ♥️
Every book Beatrix's characters are loveable and well written. Sure they have their flaws but who doesn't.
If you're new to this author, welcome, buckle up!

As usual the spice within this book is exquisite and filthy in the best of ways. But there's also a great balance of plot, world building etc. If you're unsure of it being too much smut, don't be. This is the perfect mix. Beatrix always seems to find that perfect balance between the two and they play off of each other to deliver steamy scenes and healthy tension and growth throughout.
Also worth noting the inclusivity within her books, especially this one. We have gender fluidity and MM scenes 😏. Everyone's invited to the party no matter their expression of self.

All in all you'll love Lacey and her band of flawed creatures.

“My sins aren't what I have to fight right now...it's theirs.”

Lady Luck has definitely struck with this book! I freaking loved it. Such a detailed and intricately researched plot with divine characters, I fell in love with them all straight up and was greedy for more.
I loved learning more about the Irish Folklore aspects of the world and how they all came to be in this misfit operation.
The plot played out like a movie in my head, with elements speeding up and slowing down along with the story. Super cool experience, I was definitely immersed in the details.
The characters are so unique and special and I loved their paired and collective dynamics, so much fun to be had with this deviant crew!
The spice was next level creative! Like wow! I have not read anything like this before. Love love love!

Flawed Creatures by Beatrix Hollow is a standalone urban fantasy romance that I listened to on audio narrated by Michelle Price and Vincent Skye.

I love Beatrix's books! I can't help but binge them in one sitting. I was pulled in from the first chapter and couldn't wait to see what was going to happen next. I loved the chemistry between Lacey, Lorcan, Puca, and Dullahan. I really enjoyed getting all of their points of views throughout the book. It really brought the story to life.

Michelle and Vincent were absolutely amazing! They both really know how to bring a story to life. I look forward to listening to more of their work in the future.

I would recommend this book if you like urban fantasy romances, paranormal romances, MMMF romances, or erotic romances.

Beatrix always writes the most quirky, interesting plot lines and this book was no different. Lacey and her monsters are chaotic in the best way and definitely kept me on my toes. There were a lot of elements to these characters that I had never read about before and I loved being shocked by some of their traits. The spice, as always, was well written and intense. To no one’s surprise, Dullahan ended up being my favourite by a small margin but I honestly found myself loving all of them pretty equally. Lacey is also complex and hilarious. She had a lot of moments that made me cackle out loud. She was different from other FMCs I’m used to reading about and I loved her chaotic quirkiness.

Am I obsessed? Just a smidge.

Lacey has all the luck in the world. And she should, she’s a leprechaun. A thrill seeker, greedy, and a gambler…until her paths cross with three beings The Council decided are too dangerous to live. An incubus, a shape shifter and The Headless Horseman himself are all after Lacey for a taste of her luck.

Y’all. This is one has it all: fully polyam, size difference, piercings, tails…needless to say check your TW but I loved it.

Beatrix's books are quirky, fun, spicy, and dark and this one is no exception but it’s exactly what I love. A new, sexy, spicy twist on familiar characters and legends.

This one won’t be for everyone but if it’s your quink, you’ll love it!

“Some creatures are fatally flawed. I'm a thrill-seeker, a gambler, and a thief--playing whim to my Greed. However, my sins aren't what I have to fight right now...it's theirs.”

A new Beatrix Hollow favorite?! She just keeps getting better! This was everything I’ve come to expect from her as an author—chaotic, hilarious, deliciously spicy, and insidiously tender. I absolutely adored every flaw of these monsters and how they so perfectly fit together, mending and filling the holes they previously felt in their lives.

“Why did I always find myself attracted to the worst men? Particularly, the ones trying to kill and kidnap me. My lifelong luck certainly gave me a twisted sort of libido.”

Lacey is the Baz, the Mothman, the character that speaks to my soul. She was absolutely unhinged, barreling head first with no helmet toward destruction and I. Am. Here. For. It. The more her life was in danger, the more she craved it and while I’m typically largely opposed to the “too stupid to live” FMC, Beatrix is the absolute MASTER of making me love these women (I’m look at you too, Ava). Lacey’s inner monologue was hilarious and so aptly acknowledged how poorly she was making decisions or how dangerous a situation was that I came to crave her utterly disastrous choices.

“This merry group is a shit show.”

Dullahan, Puca, and Lorcan were also just so perfectly imperfect. Reading the humor woven into each character that combines so effortlessly with their underlying wants and desires is something I always look forward to from Beatrix and this was no disappointment. Puca—bouncing between wanting to Lacey as a meal and a companion. Lorcan—struggling to contain his desire to feed on lust until everyone around him collapsed. And poor daddy Dullahan—trying to keep this rag tag band of misfits in check with his big ole D, detachable head, and commanding Irish voice (not to mention spine whip…uh YES!). Their individual relationships with Lacey, as well as their intermingling amongst one another, was truly chef’s kiss perfection.

Finally, I’d be remiss not to mention the twists and turns in this plot that had me spinning! While full of spicy perfection, there was still so much substance and story that I couldn’t seem to put this down and turned page after page desperate to see how it all played out.

The narration on this was also fantastic. Vincent Skye has such a wide range of voices and his accents were spot on--I loved how Dullahan's was more pronounced than Puca and really, all of our men sounded fantastic. Michelle Price was spot on as always and she did a fantastic job bringing Lacey to life. Here's my official petition for them to narrate all the books together in the future.

Plot 2.5 Spice 3.75

Dark Paranormal Urban Fantasy, Multi 1st POV, Poly/why chose (MF, MM, MFM) morally gray possessive MMCs, stalker romance, kidnapping, age gap, size difference, Jacob’s ladder 🍆, dub con/non con, forced proximity spicy time, no 3rd act breakup, no babies

Kink: D/s, Daddy, brat, pleasure dom, 🤚🏻 📿, edging, degradation, praise, bondage/restraint, s3x swing, toys, biting, 🍑 play, DP, voyuerism)

This was only OK. This author has a bit of Lily Gold syndrome where there was a new plot, but same basic harem members with mostly the same time of interactions & plot progression (Lorcan = Baz, Puca = Orson, Dullahan = Nemo). Poorly written with loads of grammatical mistakes, very little plot, even less plot progression, and extremely one dimensional characters & relationships. (Very no plot, just vibes.)

As one reviewer said, I too think it would have been better without Lacey. I have literally no idea no idea why they loved her, other than obsession, but the relationships amongst the MMCs at least had a little depth & backstory. Puca was weird & creepy, Lorcan was neurotic but I guess kind of sweet, and Dullahan was adorable.

There wasn’t much of a plot, but there also wasn’t enough spice for the spice to be the plot. This spice was wild but it was also constantly interrupted and that got irritating.
The lack of consent & ignoring boundaries was frequent throughout & I did not care for it.

Overall, not much happened, Lacey sucked, the pacing was off, the story was choppy, & I just couldn’t get into it, but it certainly isn’t the worst book I’ve read.

DNF @ 54%

This just didn’t float my boat or butter my bread unfortunately.

The spice was…meh…
The plot started out fairly promising, but I got bored so quickly.
I don’t know what happened. I see so many people loved this. I’m usually a really easy customer, but this just wasn’t the one for me.

I found the story becoming repetitive, and not moving along.
I found the FMC to be a little too quirky - nothing of any substance?
I didn’t love Puca.
I didn’t mind Dullahan, but his description didn’t do it for me.
Lorcan sounded promising, but I stopped reading before his character got anywhere.

There was just zero substance at all?
I don’t mind a cheap thrill to read, but this just felt so boring.

Anyway.
That’s my two cents.

loved the concept of luck in this. other than that, i didn't really feel it. i mean, it had its moments but nah. too much MM, the sex scenes were more about them having sex than them having chemistry (if that makes sense), and the writing style isn't my favorite. might not read this author again. i might, though, if she ever writes a RH without MM, and one that is less gloomy than what she tends to write.

It's a really fun and lusty ride but the connection between the characters feels very surface level and convenient, there's not really any high-stakes tension even though they're in a life/death situation. The character dynamics are fun but the connection and their personalities are a little flat.
