In 5711 NCE (New Common Era), Office 5 of the Security Building received three unsolicited messages from the Space Prison:
– My dear, I’m watching you. – Relax, you’re just on the big broadcast screen in the prison. – I’m suddenly really looking forward to reuniting with you. Would you welcome me with a smile, or shoot me right in the head?
Chu Si, sitting behind his wide desk, read through the messages with a straight face.
“If I remember correctly,” he replied, “your sentence is the same duration as this planet’s lifespan. So, unfortunately, that day will not arrive.”
Unless it’s the end of the world and the planet explodes.
But then two years later… the planet really did explode.
English title is Black Sky (Nights on NU). Mu Su Li herself calls this a Space Magic Fairy Tale not science fiction and said not to take it too seriously. Interstellar✨space/time loop ✨ soft sci-fi✨ action ✨ is the way I would describe it. IMO, MSL wrote pretty logical foundation/explanations of the sci-fi/space/time elements while keeping it not too heavy or confusing. Even though it’s interstellar, it still felt like a contained tight story overall.
My favorite thing about this novel is the CP 💜Power couple-they each hold their own 💜Bickering and bantering- classic MSL 💜Enemies to lovers- MSL masterfully reveals layers of their backstory 💜The way they show their feelings through actions is so endearing 💜So much tension! The chemistry is incredible 💜Sensual fade to black 🌶️
MC Chu Si:intelligent young high ranking official, cold but caring, aloof, strict, will lie to your face if needed, favorite word is probably scram ML Sa’e Yang: shameless flirt, “dangerous criminal”, carefree, eccentric, f*ck authority attitude, leaves CS speechless, does what he wants, but his backstory explains it all!
What I loved: 🚀 Humor: my appreciation of Mu Su Li and her ability to write bickering couples builds with each novel I read by her 🚀 Really fun, engaging plot. I never felt lost which is something that can easily happen to me with sci-fi 🚀 Sweet moments when they realize they are each others only person 🚀 The way MSL writes flashbacks, not too long and perfectly timed
I did not stress at all about completely understanding the sci fi or time travel aspects which made this novel so much fun and it was actually pretty easy to follow. I didn’t see any plot holes, problem with the structure, or experience any frustrations with not having detailed explanations of some things.
Give this a try if: ✔️you aren’t sure if sci-fi is for you but you’d like to give it a try or just want a less complicated interstellar novel ✔️you enjoy a novel where the relationship development outshines the plot IMO ✔️don’t mind a mysterious plot- you just have to trust MSL will get you there
I actually wished for this to have a little bit more romance than it actually has because I seriously loved the dynamic between the MC and ML. Definitely a power couple without any dilly-dallying pretty much about anything, that includes the way they handle their relationship. The enemies-to-lovers trope, with one being the prisoner and the other one the official who handles him. The sexual tension and chemistry is so palpable right from the start and you'll immediately know there's something up with them even from miles away. The shameless and endless banter also added more to their interesting dynamic and I just wouldn't get tired reading about them.
The plot itself is cloaked in mystery and that makes this so engaging. I appreciate that every secrets are tangled together in ways the you wouldn't expect. All characters are suspicious but whether in a bad way or good way, you will only know once the full truth is revealed. The plot itself is not perfectly solid, though. It's concentrated on the topic of time and space so expect the story to be on a complex side, especially since it involves time travel, so it has many time discrepancies that led in both directions: a mind-blowing situation that comes full circle and also some tiny plot holes that aren't full explained. Honestly, not my favorite one in this subgenre but I still enjoyed this quite a lot.
Overall, I loved the couple's interaction more that the plot itself but I highly recommend. This is sci-fi but Musuli herself mentioned not to take the technicalities seriously because it leans more toward fantasy in space.
4.5/5 dare i say new fave power couple. chu si and sae yang’s dynamic was so fun and they had such surprisingly soft moments eeeeek along with their hilarious antics and space-time straight up jargon of a plot (flew over my head), i laughed lots and enjoyed it immensely. i think about can ci pin by priest often so this hit all the right spots. sci fi and historical genres are my least favourite generally but somehow they’re my favourite danmei to read. what a lovely surprise.
4.5 ⭐️ I’d been meaning to read Black Sky / Nights for a while, especially since I really enjoyed the author’s other sci-fi novel, The First-Class Lawyer. It’s set in an interstellar world with a lot of mystery to dig into. Both leads, Sa’e Yang and Chu Si, are smart and reserved, but Sa’e has a bit of an unhinged edge (in a fun way), while Chu Si is more aloof and shameless, which makes their dynamic really fun to read. It leans more toward plot than romance, though there are some sweet moments. The pacing could’ve been better in some parts, but the worldbuilding and slow unfolding mystery kept me hooked. Definitely worth checking out.
This was a really beautiful ride! When I first started reading the novel, I was just curious but then I’ve completely fallen in love with the main characters and the plot, which is particularly filled with mysteries and its hints throughtout the overall narration as well as time travels of different kinds. The mayority of the characters of the supporting cast is really charismatic in its own way-I can’t help but think about Shao Heng, who is always quite hilarious-and the dynamic between Chu Si and Sa’e Yang is really refreshing, never to be taken for granted or boring. They reminded me a bit of Jiuhuo-the main couple who I absolutely adored in another brilliant work of the same author, Musuli, which is Global examination. During my reading, I felt as if the author really got inside the main characters’ head, feelings and emotions as well as their sufferings and their development seemed just spontaneuous and delicate, not abrupt.
The only complain that I can move towards this book is that, at the end of the novel, some parts felt a bit confusing. However, I appreciated particularly the delicacy of the ending and all the themes touched-such as immortality-some times more deeply, other times just on the surface.
The stars are bright, the sun is clear, and among all the beautiful things in the world, whether dead or alive, I will always love you the most.
from the moment Chu Si pulled out a rocket launcher and aimed it at Sa’e Yang upon their reunion post-planet collapse, i knew their story was the one for me. their dynamic is perhaps my most favorite of all of mu su li’s books i’ve read so far, which has only been three.
this book also cemented my love for interstellar novels, which did already exist before but i wasn’t that well aware of the pattern.
giving it 4* because at first i had trouble getting into it and some parts of the worldbuilding left me quite confused (might be a translation thing or just me being an idiot though LOL) but overall the plot was amazing (i’m a sucker for some good old time and space travel) and the main couple’s an absolute gem ❤️
Usually I avoid SF novels because they're not my taste but this is written by Mu Su Li, of course I couldn't resist.
I really liked it, but I admit that it almost lost me a few times because again, although it's not a "proper" SF, it contains time loops and complicated plots. If it was written by priest, who tends to write overly complicated plots and terms, I probably would've given it up (I'm sorry, Can Ci Pin).
The relationship between Chu Si and Sa'e Yang was very sweet, but I wasn't particularly interested in it compared to other couples because these 2...how can I explain it? They should've been in a relationship already. It felt like they've been in one since the beginning. They just randomly kissed at about 30% of the book and then moved on. I did like them though.
As for the plot...everything is intentional. From the very first page to the last page, everything is connected so you should pay attention if you want to understand. I especially enjoyed the ending because it was so beautiful and heartwarming, I was almost tearing up seeing how the characters got their happy ending.
All in all, pick this up if you miss the typical Mu Su Li humor, a well written plot and if you want a shorter novel.
The two leads were absolutely the highlight of this book. Their chemistry and banter were fantastic and it’s their dynamic that really carried the story and kept me invested.
Unfortunately, the plot itself was too confusing to follow. The author claims that the story isn’t science fiction and is meant to be “nonsense,” but then proceeds to include wild sci-fi elements—spaceships, different planets, strange technology—without enough explanation or worldbuilding. As a result, I was often left unsure of what was happening or how to visualize the scenes.
Some parts reminded me of Cowboy Bebop with the interplanetary travel and futuristic setting.
4.25 ⭐ The ending was a bit weak in my opinion and some things were predictable. But !!!!! Black Sky was so good overall. I loved Sa'e Yang so much and the time leaps / plot was really interresting and well developped !
This author can really write banter like no other, the characters are always amazing. The plot was super gripping with only one or two moments of calm. That said, I can't give it 5 ★ cause global examination exists and that will forever be my favorite by this author.
The characters personalities were so entertaining I genuinely do not care if Mu Su Li's "treat it like fantasy" worldset gave me brain damage or not. I fw the mc and ml's dynamic SO HARD.
I found this completely by chance looking for a novel with a slightly different name, but i sure ain't angry about it. Bantering frenemies to lovers is a trope ill never turn down. ❤️
