A book can feel like a train hurtling through the countryside. A collection of poems feels more like a gentle stroll where you senses are stimulated and you feel part of your life.

Here is a wonderful set of short poems which relate to love both in its longing, passion and heartache. Bittersweet emotions, we seldom can control or capture forever.

There is something for everyone here. The author does not waste her words. A vibrant bouquet of language that resonates with experience and loss.

Nothing soft and gooey at first glance but neither hard and cynical. Words that capture love, for better, for worse. To love and to cherish may be our heart’s desire but actions seldom match our words. Here is the full gamut of emotions triggered and tainted by love.

It would be inappropriate to pick out particular poems that impressed me most. Not wrong so much as inaccurate as on later reading or at different moments other lines may impact me more.

However, “I wish” expressed my feelings in words I would struggle to find myself. “Alien” verbalised how for me the narcissistic path some follow to become hard and uncaring.
“Broken” and “Hurt” capture the pain not just in abusive relationship but where love grows cold and indifference becomes words of justification.
“Whispers” and “Joy” recall the first tingles of attraction that grow and sustain a deeper reciprocated love.
And, “Mother” and “Hanstholm” a practical unconditional love some are fortunate to give and receive.

Like all good writing it moved me and found memories but the power of words can be healing and transforming. I think here you have a gem of personal expression that mirrors and attests to our humanity and sense of being.

Love is indeed sweet … until those moments when it is not. Both extremes have inspired poets since time immemorial, and this lovely book was no exception.

What I love about reading good poetry is the weight that every single word has – none wasted – none yearning for a spot undeserved. In the poem “Muse,” the author writes: “I play with words, Filling them with emotion, Hoping they will lead others, To recognise a fellow traveller.” To me, these lines sum up all of Ms. Gade’s poetry.

There was so much in the book that resonated deeply with me. “The Price,” which tells us, “We do pay a price and yet we do it all over again.” Ah, how right she is!

The poem “Goodbye,” which like all of the poems, I read 2-3 times, was so relatable, as was the poem “Annihilation,” only as I read it over and over, I wished it were not.

One of my favorite poems was “Hanstholm.” I found these words so poignant and evocative: “My grandfather’s whistling, Lost in the wind, As we made our way home …”

“Hymn of Death” was chilling and powerful. The kind of poetry that sticks to you because you know it truly has something to say.

It was very difficult for me to limit the poems I wanted to quote, for every one of them had meaning to me, as I believe they will to other readers. I could also tell that a great deal of passion went into crafting every poem … the hard work of this poet was truly revealed.

Exquisite!

I discovered that I simply read too fast to appreciate poetry if I read it the way I read every other book. So, for this book I changed tactics and instead I decided to read every poem out loud. I can absolutely say that if poetry isn't your thing this might be the way to fix it. All of a sudden the poetry works!

Gade writes really beautiful and most of all atmospheric poems. It's hard to find the right words to describe emotions, feelings, bigger concepts like love and loss and abuse, but Gade does it. It's clear that those words come from her own heart and soul, which makes them even more touching.

Since poetry is often so personal, I of course didn't like all poems. And that's not because those poems are bad or didn't work. It's mostly because they're about an experience I don't share (in some cases that's a really good thing) and therefore will never be able to feel these words that deeply.

To experience the poems as they probably should be experienced it might also be a great idea to not read the entire collection in one sitting. After a time the feelings, atmospheric pictures and themes start to blur a little. And that's a pity, because I think all these poems deserve to be thought about and felt.

I loved, loved, loved Helle Gade's collection of poetry entitled Dolce Amore.

The poet looks at many different aspects of love - passion, obsession and desire as well as betrayal, loss and longing. She includes the nostalgic love of times spent with grandparents in the past and the feelings evoked by passing seasons. Whatever Helle Gade writes about, her words are full of power, passion and beauty.

I love the poems where she refers to her Nordic heritage. She has written in this way before, giving us an even deeper insight into her being.

Bravo, Helle.....a wonderful collection!

I find there are few things I have missed more than Gade's words. Perhaps the sun or moon could go away and I would still feel the same. They are ethereal, mythological and somehow modern at the same time. There is nothing like her poetry. It is an experience and I loved every word.

My favorite line:

"The madness in their hearts ripped the universe apart in a cataclysmic explosion of rose petals and stardust"

She deserves a place amongst the stars

There’s pride in her words, every poem shows that! She writes of romance lost, the ocean which she drinks up every wave, her heritage she’s so proud of, tragedy and despair, the sky and it’s gods and stars. She wears her heart for all to read, it’s not easy, but necessary for her soul. She does it well!
Her words a relatable to today and yesterday, every poem hits your soul, makes you think. She takes her time to tell a story that reaches down deep.
She no stranger to the written word, her excellence in digging deep shows!
I love every poem but some strike the soul more than others, for me “Muse” was the one, finding the light a another.

Such a gorgeous cover to gorgeous words to a gorgeous writer!! I LOVED this book. The author has such beautiful words for everything. You can picture in your mind what she is saying in her poems. Did you ever feel like your going to cry over a poem?? I sure did. They are not sad, they are happy poems but it's written so beautifully you just get emotinal. This is one unique writer. I cannot wait to read more of her poetry.

I received a free copy of the book and is voluntarily writing a review
