Left Behind #1

Searching for Nova

Rate this book
Nova
We met in foster care.
Easton’s parents died. Mine didn’t want me.

Easton got adopted by rich people who gave him everything.
I got stuck with a man who only wanted me for the monthly check.

Twelve years went by. I thought I’d never see Easton again.
When I do, he isn’t the sweet boy I knew in foster care.
He’s a rich snob with friends who treat me like dirt.

He says he wants to help me.
I don’t need his help.
He left me behind.
I’m not letting him back in my life only to have him leave me again.

Easton
I’ve been searching for Nova for 12 years.
When I finally find her, she wants nothing to do with me.

She says I’m someone else now.
And I am, but not when I’m with her.
She reminds me of who I used to be, the part of me I lost.

I didn’t ask to be rich.
The fancy cars? The prep school?
It’s not me.

Why can’t you see that, Nova?
The boy you knew is still here. I’m just older now, and I love you.
And I promise, I’ll never leave you again.

Definitely not a favorite of mine. The first 50 precent of the book is one main character trying to see the other and that one say no we can't be friends but she wants to be. I thought the story line could of been great. Instead of the kids only being 5 when they knew each other maybe do it later in life. They could reunite it collage. It just seems a little strange they had such a strong connection at 5 after only being with each other for a year. What's with Easton's parents trying to keep his adoption asecret. The whole book just kinda had a repetitive vibe. I felt like the main characters had the same conversation over and over again. Not bad but not my thing.

Excerpt: “I notice how he’s looking at me, with the same care and concern as when we were kids. From the moment we met, I could tell he was different than other kids. He had so much compassion for people.” ——>

This is the h’s inner monologue about the kid she hasn’t seen since they were FIVE 😂 On top of that, she keeps saying “he left me”. Again, the “leaving” she’s talking about? = the H was FIVE and got adopted out lol

⭐️⭐️

Unfortunately, this duet ended up being one of those ones dragged. This really only serves to make the FMC more and more annoying over time.

For all her bluster, the FMC is actually a pretty uninteresting person. She’s not particularly funny, in fact it’s a point people always bring up to her - that she’s ornery. Which is fine, I don’t mind ornery but there’s literally not much else to her. She’s so stuck in her hopelessness she’s a shell of a person with zero interests or personality. She cracks no jokes and she has little interest in anything. By the end of the series, that doesn’t really change. There’s no big redemption arc for her and she doesn’t break out of her shell.

On top of that, her refusal to be the H’s girlfriend was very confusing although perhaps that’s just the inner workings of a teenager that I found immature and annoying.

First off, it might've be nice to know beforehand that this is not a stand alone. It was the same with Dirty Little Secret and Broke and Bullied - you just get into it and BAM cliffhanger!

The writing is good (though I personally feel like there's a bit too much repetition at times) and the plot was interesting. The drama element was somewhat predictable. The characters ... well ... they had their ups and downs. I liked how Nova's relationship with other guys was depicted. It was an interesting way of sketching her character. She was actually pretty believable. Easton on the other hand ... hmmm ... the further the book went, the more I wanted to bash him on the head with his hockey stick! Yeah, you could say he was confused or unravelling or whatever but somehow he seemed a bit too fickle.

Even though this book takes place in high school almost in the middle of a school year, we don't see the characters in school. Same with the hockey - it's more implied than seen. Similar to other books by this author, there is explicit content!

This wasn’t the worst book I’ve read, but it wasn’t the best. Having such a strong connection at the age of 5, and only living in the same foster home for about a year, seems a tad bit unrealistic. For Easton to constantly bring up Nova’s characteristics, such as having trust issues ever since she was young, doesn’t seem like something a 5 year old would be able to notice. I’ve seen other authors use 5 as the age of the leads beginning their friendship/connection, but it’s still way too young imo.

I also didn’t like how Nova barged into Easton’s home at the end of the book. I thought it was disrespectful and childish — made me like her less. I mean, I get that it was done so that shed see Paris there, but I feel like that could’ve been revealed some other way. It was just a cluster f*ck of events in a matter of two pages, especially with the reveal of him being adopted.

Not too bad

I actually really liked the story of this book.
However, I very nearly stopped reading it. So many mistakes, from grammar to sentences not making sense due to added unneeded words. Please
I persevered through it and it did get better and I am actually looking forward to book two.

💔.

My heart broke for Nova. Easton did. Or handle thing right for sure. Rich/poor it really shouldn’t matter but it does sometimes. I can’t wait for the rest of the story.

Can't wait for book 2

Nice to go back and read some more work of Kai Juniper. This was such a great read. Nova and Easton are such a complicated, compelling couple. I love the whole rich/poverty storyline that is going along with this. Can't wait to see how this plays out.
