For some reason I am compelled to buy craft books (maybe because I'm blocked, seeking, whatever you want to call it?).
I've played with encaustics before and didn't like the process, perhaps because we were "painting" realistically with the wax, which I found difficult. As with painting and collage, I find that working abstractly may be the best route for me right now, and working abstractly with encaustics is verrrry appealing.
I was disappointed that the author didn't address toxicity in this book. I guess the wax is probably non-toxic, but I imagine the fumes are not so fabulous. I'm not sure I have the proper set up to accommodate the fumes so I'll need to research that since the book didn't address it.
Overall, though, a good reference book. My dear Santa letter this year might include a request for encaustic paints ...
Great book for examples of some encaustic projects. It lacked detail when it came to safety and safe practice. For example the writer notes that oils paints can be mixed with melted medium to create colors, but fails to mention the toxic hazards of some pigments (zinc, cadmium, lead, cobalt, etc.) Also ventilation, heat and flame points of wax etc. are not mentioned. Overall beautiful photos, but not a great intro for newbies from a safety point of view.
Yeah!
