You know the story of Hades and Persephone…or do you?

Happily ever after had not been in the cards for Hades and his bride. Persephone, resentful of being trapped in the Underworld, betrayed Hades to his greatest enemy...and wound up murdered in the process. But an ancient prophecy foretold her return, and only then could Hades hope to finally win the war for the Underworld. He's been patiently waiting for thousands of years, biding his time until her return, dying for the chance to defeat his foes at last...and get a little revenge on his former wife while he's at it...

Now, he's finally found her reincarnate in the stunning and deadly Skylar Pembroke. Highly trained, exceptionally stubborn, and oblivious to her past life, Skylar does not take well to being kidnapped by a God...no matter how brutally handsome he may be or how often she's dreamt of him in the past. Determined to fight fate, Skylar will make life anything but easy for the God of the Underworld.

Now Hades must push aside thousands of years' worth of anger, forget past wrongs, convince the femme fatale to marry him once more...and stop himself from falling for her all over again in the process...

This is a must read for anyone addicted to paranormal romance! K. D. Miller has crafted a modern take on some of our favorites from mythology and her story of Hades and Skylar is the most entertaining so far. Truly, I laughed, nearly cried a few times, and cannot wait for the next part of the journey. Miller's storytelling is natural and visually stunning. If you are an avid paranormal romance reader who adores strong heroines, with an incredible sense of humor, you need this in your world.

Holy Heck. This was a wild ride and an exciting one at that. There are no words outside of this is a must read if you like God's and otherworldly creatures. I have never connected so well with characters humor and personalities like I did with this book. It's one of those books you hope and pray never ends. I certainly CAN NOT wait for what else is to come and pray to the book gods that be there is much more where this one came from. K. D. Miller is now one of my absolute favorite authors.

This book is a great read! It was a fun, fast read and K. D. Miller has a good writing style. I love the characters in this book, Hades and Skylar have a great chemistry and I loved their humorous interactions.

Hades is the ruler of the Underworld and has been looking for the reincarnated version of his wife Persephone for 3000 years because of an ancient prophecy. According to a powerful seer, Emmy, Skylar is that person. Hades kidnaps Skylar and then has to convince her to marry him willingly. But Skylar isn’t all that she seems.

This book reminds me of the style of Kresley Cole and the Immortals After Dark series (which I love) so this was a happy surprise. There is even a mention of the series in the book.

I hope there is going to be follow up stories with the other characters in this book, they are going to be interesting.

Overall I really enjoyed this story and would recommend this book.

Wow!! Holy gods this book was awesome!

Laughs, twists, all the gods in their glory, mythical creatures and so much more. An amazing first book in the series and I cannot wait to read what happens next.

Hades is the god of the underworld (no surprises there) and trying to fulfil the prophecy to see him win the long term war with his evil brother. He just needs to marry the reincarnation of his betraying ex-wife. No biggie!

Skylar doesn’t exactly know what she is, only that she’s different and 100% trained awesome! These two are electric together and while sparks fly and flames follow will they survive the fire?

I was gifted an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and am already looking forward to collecting the series!

I like that although this is a retelling of Hades and Persephone it stands out all it’s own. I laughed a lot, but I knew I was a goner for this book when I was truly upset and even surprised with the choices some of the characters made. The beginning pages of this book lure you in, Hades and Skylar romance and wits enraptured you, and Emmie and friends keep you wanting more!
I would definitely recommend this book

I would like to thank K. D. Miller for including me in her ARC team in exchange for an honest review .
I really enjoyed this book! I love Hades/Persephone retellings, and this has been a really nice experience.
Not only do we get a badass witty heroine but she also has an adorable sidekick/bestfriend!
I also adored all the Pop Culture references in this book, that added a level of "quiz game" to the book.

Great job, can't wait to read more!

I’ve read a lot of stories that are linked to mythology, and I must say… This story was one of my favourites! I read it in one sitting, and as a single mom.. that’s typically not an easy thing to do. There is so much to this book, it’s exciting with unexpected twists & I cannot wait for more!! It’s one I will read again, and again! If you like paranormal romance and have a thing for Gods, I highly recommend this!
Edited to add, I read it again.. still all the dopamine! It’s so good!

I was lucky enough to get a copy of this to read and as with the rest of K.D Miller's books it was amazing. It's a different take on Hades and Persephone but the characters are amazing and the story is fast paced and entertaining. I adore K.D Miller's little quotes and sayings that tie in with the real world. As a nerd myself it always brings a smile to my face! Make sure you read this book it is well worth it

What a book! Had this sat on my kindle and can’t believe I didn’t read it sooner. Wonderful story, likeable characters, off the charts chemistry and a fantastic read. If you like romance books based around Greek Mythology then this is definitely for you. I now need to go looking to see if there are going to be more books with other characters. I really hope so. This book was easy enough to read in a single sitting. Skylar and Hades have some great chemistry between them and I love the snarkiness between them.
Ive always enjoyed reading about Hades and this was no exception.
I hope there are more in this series.

An amazing twist to the Hades/Persephone myths! When I started reading I was hesitant. The story was a little slow and not what I thought, but I was wrong! The story picks up with action, love, & steamy scenes. I look forward to more in the series. K.D. please write a Z & Zeus story next!!

This book was great. The ending was brilliant.

In this retelling of the story of Hades and Persephone, except her name is Skylar, Hades needs to marry Persephone's reincarnate in order to keep control of the Underworld. The only problem is, he's still burnt from when Persephone betrayed him three thousand years ago with his brother Maynard. He watched her die for her efforts. Now she's back, and he doesn't know what to think.

Sky has no idea she is Hades' wife reincarnate.

Sky likes to defend those who cannot do for themselves, and that is exactly what she does to get herself embroiled in the Hades mess. She dreamed of this dude, but so what, doesn't mean she should fall head over heels for him.

But of course, you know what happens.

All through the story, Hades questions Sky as to what she is--- not human, with her fangs and claws, but not any other species. Whenever Hades asks Sky what she is she gives him answers such as: a joker, a midnight toker, and a Jedi like her father before her. That's one thing she holds close, like it's a secret, but the secret being she doesn't know.

The references to pop culture were pretty cute. I love how the Gods and Demi-gods watch mortal T.V.

The only thing that really got on my nerves was her saying buddy boy, and buco. Don't worry, Sky doesn't say that over and over, it just stood out as I was reading. Like, why is she talking like that? Seems old slang for a young person. This is where that clever ending comes in.

The author did a really good job in surprising me. I don't want to say too much and give anything away, but if you're a fan of romance and kicka$$ heroines, this is the book for you.

HOT, enemies to lovers, Hades and Persephone original retelling!

This is unlike any other Hades and Persephone retelling I’ve ever read and it’s brilliant!! This is book one of two in the Veracity of the Gods series. Thousands of year ago, Persephone betrayed Hades and helped his enemy, only to die in the process. It has been foretold that she would return. She returns as the badass (species unknown) Skylar Pembroke. Hades wants her like never before even though he struggles with his anger towards her past misdeeds. She has dreamt of him for most of her life and doesn’t understand why. As they navigate their connection and intense attraction to each other, they both let down their walls and let each other in. I don’t want to give away too many spoilers. This book is action packed, has amazing banter between the characters, and the HEAT!! Oh my god it’s off the charts! Skylar is such a strong and powerful heroine and she always had the best comebacks. Hades is sinfully dark and delicious. I loved all of the references to different books and movies (Marvel and Immortals After Dark fan). I am definitely invested in this world and all of the characters. I cannot wait to read the next book and I’m hoping there are going to be so many more books in this series!

Book Review: Dark Burning by: K. D. Miller

This book is a must read! It puts a whole new and unique twist on the ancient story of Hades and Persephone. This retelling had so many elements of twists and turns. Set in modern times it’s the story of Skylar and assassin who is the reincarnation of Persephone. In this story the original Persephone betrays Hades and is killed and now 3000 years later Hades rightfully so still hates her even if this girl is not technically the same women. But he must marry her to defend the underworld in an ancient prophecy. So he kidnaps her and of course she should just marry him right?!? Haha yeah this book is full of witty banter, angst, forgiveness, strength and courage. I loved the two main characters and their sidekicks! Unique world building weaving the new with the old. Skylar is a badass who doesn’t need a man let alone a god to take care of her! But she must trust him and be something transformative to save the fate of the underworld! Definitely recommend it’s a super quick read and there is the second book out in this connected series.

🔥 Witty and hilarious banter

“I’ve always wanted you to be real.” ….

If you’re expecting a run of the mill Hades and Persephone retelling this is not for you! This modern take is different from anything I’ve read. The MCs are witty and fun, and our main girl Skylar is a trained assassin/thief/badass. The supporting characters like Emmie and Zahara along with Hades’ brothers have also worked their way into my heart and I hope to see more of them in the future! This book was a roller coaster, slow going to start but boy once we fell off the top it just kept coming!

“What are you?” ….

Without spoiling anything, Sky’s personal journey to finding out what she is was really unique. Definitely didn’t expect that! KD Miller has some fun ideas when it comes to Sky’s heritage and I’ll just say it all pays off beautifully.

Overall this was a fun retelling and nothing that I expected. I hope we get to see more from this universe in the future. Never disappointed with KD Miller’s stories!

Oh. My. Gosh!!! K.D. Miller has absolutely slayed me with this dark and steamy Greek mythology inspired romance. Hades, the god of the Underworld. is in desperate need of a wife to end the war he’s been fighting, but it has to be one specific woman - Skylar Pembroke, a cunning and talented assassin from the Mortal Plane. Now, Hades must convince Skylar to become his wife, or all will be lost for him. I freaking loved Hades and Skylar’s love story, the banter was hilarious and the action scenes were amazing as well!!! Hades was broody, yes, but that’s just part of his charm. I also loved how fiercely protective he was of those he cared about. And Skylar!!! This girl is my absolute hero. She is bold, sassy, intelligent, and confident, and I wish I could be more like her. All in all, I would definitely recommend!!!

That was a wild ride.
I've always loved Hades and Persephone, even if Sephi was kidnapped and eventually fell in love with Hades.

This story is nothing like the mythology we've all heard and come to accept/love/hate.

Skylar can't pinpoint *what* she is, but she knows she's supernatural and a warrior. She dreams of a magnificent male often, and one day, he's just there, saving her from daemons.

Hades has been watching Skylar for weeks, knowing she is one to end the War for the Underworld. Seeing her in danger, he must save her.

While in the Underworld, after recovering, Sky learns the ropes, makes friends, and feels at home, finally. But, is Hades telling her everything?

Tropes:
💫 touch her and die
💫 he falls first
💫 found family
💫 Greek Mythology, twisted in a good way
💫 FMC rage

Spicy, action packed, attitude on point, Dark Burning is a must read.

This is not your typical Persephone and Hades Greek story, so throw all that you currently know out the window. Sky and Hades is an amazing enemies to lovers story and I can't get over Skylar's attitude and witty replies LOL She is a complete bad@ss and Hades doesn't know what to do with her, but through many ups and downs, their stories and fates finally come together. The whole character cast was amazing and you could really feel the love they all have for each other and laugh at what a dysfunctional family they all are.

Dark Burning and Sweet Tempest are MUST READS and I cannot wait to read more about these characters in future books.

Never disappoints!!

I am part of KD Millers Facebook Arc team, and this is the third book I’ve read of hers and she can write it ALL. Never a disappointing read. It doesn’t feel like a chore of ah I gotta get through this book to write I review, it is a treat and I enjoy her writing!
But specifically this book, it was fun, it had a good plot with some spicy scenes but they weren't overly in your face as some paranormal/fantasy books are(they were just enough * wink wink *) and the plot was GOOD. I feel like mentioning it twice was necessary because usually if a book has a good spice level the plot lacks.
And a bit of a spoiler here, it was so nice that the female main character was a bad b*tch who saves the day.
6 out of five stars. Definitely recommend.

I'm a huge fan of Hades x Persephone retellings, but I think this one just became my favorite! The banter was top notch. I loved the pop culture references sprinkled throughout. I even got attached to side characters like Emmie, Dean, and Zahara! I hope we see more of all of them throughout the series. It can be hard to do something that doesn't feel overdone in mythology retellings, but the plot twists at the end and the cliff hangers...they've set this one apart and left me itching to grab the next book in the series! So many little hints that tickled my brain but didn't quite make sense until the end. That last chapter had me feeling like Kronk...ah yes, it's all coming together!

Let me start by saying that I absolutely love mythology. Like most, I have a special fascination with Hades and Persephone's story. It seems like so many retellings of the same stories are coming out right now, and I'm all for it. But this book takes everything you know, and completely topples it. It is so original and a completely different take on an old tale. If you are looking to see a new spin on Hades and Persephone's love story, this is the book. I am incredibly excited to read the next in the series!

I was hooked from the very beginning, like seriously could not put this book down! Hades and Skylar’s chemistry is off the charts from their very first meeting. It’s written so naturally and not forced or cliche at all!! I loved that Skylar wasn’t the typical damsel or sweet maiden needing protection. She was strong and her own independent person who added to Hades’ power. I LOVE THIS BOOK! I literally DEVOURED this and the next book in the series. So good!! I cannot wait to reread it again and again!

It's not the most polished book I've read, there's some clunky sentences and a couple of small editing oversights. However, I really enjoyed it. The characters can come across as a little juvenile at times but they have depth and they grow. Has options to take the plot forward in future books, if the author turns it into a series. I knew it was an instant winner when Skylar quoted Taylor Swift.

I absolutely fell in love with the characters in this book. Skylar is hilarious. Jeff and Emmie sound like awesome best friends. I’m super jealous of the gods and their telepathic powers. The story has some interesting twists and great world building, but the star of the show is the steamy relationship between Sky and Hades. I NEED to know both Z and Dean’s stories! Can’t wait for the next book in this series. Really wish my house would give me anything I asked it for.

This story was a great modern retelling of Hades and Persephone with a twist. I loved the FMC Skylar, who is Persephone reincarnated. She is a true badass who is quick-witted and full of sarcasm. I loved the back and forth between Skylar and Hades throughout the story. This was such a fun read with a bit of spice. I loved the side characters of Emmie, Zahara, and Zeus. I am excited to start the next book.

3 stars.
I read the blurb for this book and loved it. I thought we were going to get this amazing story with a new take on H&P but overall this book just didn't hit the spot.
The writing felt very juvenile, experimental. It was as if the author was trying to figure out which term she could get away with and how to describe scenes and places. I don't think this is a bad thing, I mean how another way is one supposed to learn? But overall it sort of took away from the enjoyment of the moment.
The characters were interesting and fun to follow through the story. The plot overall worked well for the story the author was trying to tell, with action and plot twists.

Holy Hera!

I’m forever on the hunt for Hades/Persephone retellings in which Hades isn’t a mafia/businessman. And this one? It’s perfect!

It’s a whole new take on the Hades and Persephone story. I couldn’t get enough of it! I LOVE what this author did, and the ways in which she kept to the OG lore while still putting a modern twist on it.
