A detective sets off to rescue the princess from the evil clutches of a Big Brother type figure who rules over a thousand-floor 'house' navigated via stairways and lifts. It may sound like the early 80s Atari video game you always hoped to play, but is in fact a 1929 dystopian science fiction novel by Czech writer Jan Weiss. Twenty years before Orwell skewered totalitarianism in 1984, Weiss did the same with capitalism using many similar techniques. A worker revolution is raging in the lower floors even as oblivious brokers crowd the stock market above, manipulated as it is by the all-knowing Muller. Into this chaos steps Petr Brok, the aforementioned detective, suffering from a nagging identity crisis but increasingly determined to fulfill his mission as it slowly materializes out of the fog clouding his brain. Weiss adds layers to the narrative as it progresses, melding splintered moments of Brok's alternate consciousness with his dreamlike experiences in Mullerdom. The world-building here is fantastic, transcending the limitations that could easily have been imposed by a lesser writer's imagination in 1929. The book feels like it exists oddly outside of time, despite its level of detail. The one notable exception is Princess Tamara's character and her dynamic with Brok, which can read as stereotypical at times, yet ultimately even she has a heroic role to play in helping Brok fulfill his mission. Overall, though, the book holds up very well as an early example of both dystopian and general science fiction, and is actually a much more impressive work than a lot of what is churned out in those genres today. (4.5)

Surrealismus, dystopie a další žánry. Zajímavá práce s typografií. Reklamní poutače jsou tištěny jiným písmem, než zbytek textu. (Hrátky s fontem mě baví všude. Ať je to tady či u Zeměplochy.)
Zase jeden z těch nečekaných pokladů povinné četby.

Zjavenie.

Horečnatý sen, roztažený do knihy.

This work of fantasy is notable because of its creative setting, protagonist, and main villain. The plot doesn’t always make much sense, but it doesn’t have to, and it’s easy enough to just go with the flow as the story jumps around the thousand levels of Mullerdom. The question I struggle with is whether it is impressively prescient, or if it just threw so much at the wall that something was bound to stick.
Petr Brok, the hero of The House of a Thousand Floors, awakens suffering from amnesia in a windowless tower a thousand stories high—Mullerdom, named after its mysterious master Ohisver Muller. This tower of babel is simultaneously a factory extracting a rare element, a city with a large number of different districts, and the sole spaceport connecting Earth to the infinite riches of the universe. Or is it? Mullerdom is also a surveillance state, with everything observed and overheard by Muller, who the tower’s inhabitants think of as part king, part boogeyman, and part God. Muller’s ambition seems to be nothing less than world domination (along with the abduction of beautiful women the world over). The one advantage that Brok has over Muller is his invisibility—what threat are the eyes of a surveillance state if you can’t be seen? The story of The House of a Thousand Floors is essentially the battle between Brok and Muller, the invisible man versus the shadowy tyrant.
Brok’s journey takes him to various locations in Mullerdom, with his invisibility allowing him to overhear important details and to gradually get closer to discovering Muller’s location and identity. Oftentimes Brok seems to stumble upon just the information he needs by pure luck, or he is able to escape a situation that should have been hopeless, and while this would normally be an irritating reliance on coincidence . Thus, the disjointed and coincidence-reliant plot is largely forgivable. Less forgivable is the writing, which is normally serviceable, but on occasion dips below par, with dialogue being especially unrealistic and the text using excessive punctuation.
An interesting setting and main duo of characters are strong points in favor of The House of a Thousand Floors, but to me these strengths are almost entirely counterbalanced by unsatisfying writing and a story that is nothing special, even after its main weaknesses are explained away by its plot twist. There is another element worth analyzing, however, namely the degree to which The House of a Thousand Floors was predictive of the future. It’s not the first depiction of a totalitarian surveillance state, as it was preceded by Zamyatin’s We, which I believe to be a much stronger work. However, there is something prescient about the idea of a camera in every room, watched by an unknown figure far away staring at a screen. Likewise, there are little touches like the nutrient cubes that are closer to reality than you would expect from a book written in the 1920s. Overall, though, The House of a Thousand Floors is so packed with ideas, everything from religious worship to drugging the lower classes to worker revolutions to fake interstellar travel to chemical warfare to assassin guilds to personal invisibility, that I think it was bound to strike at least a chord or two that resonated into the future. I can entirely understand someone reading The House of a Thousand Floors and believing it to be a visionary work, but I personally see it as an example of an overload of ideas.
This is a quick read, entertaining because of its creativity, but it’s one of those books that I think you’ll enjoy more if you let it just wash over you and don’t consider it too critically. The battle of Brok and Muller is an engaging struggle that may actually stick with me, but most of the rest of the book certainly will not. 3/5.

A Masterpiece of Dream Logic.
Reading a book shouldn’t end the moment you flip the final page. Too often, readers and critics close a novel and move on without sitting with the material. True appreciation requires reflection—especially Jan Weiss’s The House of a Thousand Floors.
Many dismiss the novel's climax, arguing that the "it was all a dream" revelation is a tired cliché that ruins the experience. However, this surface-level critique entirely misses the point. When you pause to reflect, the ending doesn't ruin the book. It recontextualizes it into a masterpiece of surrealist fiction.
The genius of Weiss's work lies in how the writing itself mimics the subconscious. Throughout the story, readers navigate dense, difficult descriptions that frequently abandon traditional narrative structure to dive into pure lyricism.
The prose becomes disorienting and highly poetic, shifting away from standard reality. Why? Because the entire text is a literal dream. The surreal, shifting tone is not a flaw!
This dream framework also perfectly explains what might otherwise be viewed as narrative mistakes. In a standard science fiction novel, protagonist Peter Brok's journey would feel incredibly contrived. One has to ask:
—How does he succeed at everything he attempts?
—Why is he always in the exact right place at the exact right time?
—How does he effortlessly skip his way through the conflict?
In a physical world, these conveniences are glaring plot holes. But as the manifestation of a dream, this structure is flawlessly accurate. In dreams, we frequently teleport/phase between locations, intuitively know things without learning them, and experience nonsensical progression. Brok’s seemingly impossible luck is a brilliant mechanical representation of dream logic.
Ultimately, The House of a Thousand Floors is a fever dream—specifically, the typhus-induced hallucinations of a soldier. When viewed through this lens rather than as a traditional sci-fi narrative, the entire structure clicks into place. Every difficult explanation, bizarre setting, and impossible coincidence makes profound sense.
Despite its age, Weiss’s novel remains a breathtaking piece of literature. It is extraordinary because it delivers exactly what it promises—not at the beginning, but in its final, revelatory moments.
It is a novel that demands you finish it, close it, and then rethink everything you just read.

K tomu myslím pomáhá i kombinace prvků z různých žánrů - pohádka, detektivka, sci-fi, válečný román etc.. A snad i „myšlenkových rámců“ - expresionismus, socialismus etc.

Solium, plyn Sio a stařeček Schwarz. Překvapivě dobré.
