With complex characters, political intrigue and shocking twists, this gender-bent Hades & Persephone re-imagining will keep you guessing until the very end.

Three rulers. Two sides. One plot for revenge. Welcome to the Kingdom of Lavdia.

In a village all but forgotten by the country’s rulers, Finn leads two lives. One of a simple country doctor, and the other of a smuggler with cargo of a rare variety: Wielders, a nearly extinct race of people born with the ability to control Magic. With their rights being threatened by the very people in power meant to protect them, the Wielders see Finn as their last chance for a better life. But when Finn is abducted and blackmailed into the service of a vengeful royal, his loyalty, and his heart, will be put to the ultimate test.

On a throne miles away, Andromeda, selected at birth to inherit the role of Mother Queen and continue her family’s royal line, has waited years for her chance to exact revenge on those who stole her freedom and tore her family apart. But she can’t do it alone. With the help of a handsome and intriguing young doctor, she will right the wrongs committed against her, and forge a path of a most gloriously scarlet retribution.

With the fate of their kingdom hanging in the balance, these two unlikely allies must navigate an intricate web of political rivalries and long-buried secrets in order to achieve their goals. But as hidden plots unfold and the true rot at the heart of the country is revealed, what starts as a quest for justice spirals into a desperate game of survival.

This first installment of an epic new trilogy from the author that brought you "His and Mine" will leave you breathless and haunted long after the final page is turned.

[ARC Reader] 🌟🌟🌟🌟.75/5

I had the luck to receive this book as an ARC reader, and I can only say I am...devastated.

Be warned, this book has some triggering matters and is a dark soulful story. As you all know, I love me some darkness in a book and this was chef's kiss.

I...how do I even begin? This book broke my heart into a million pieces. I fell in love with Finn, Andromeda, and Angelus--even Silla, so damn hard, I cannot explain how many tears I shed during and by the end.

I loved how Finn was the soft boy with golden curls, and sun eyes and Andromeda the cruel Queen with dark eyes and hair, who was just tired of her hard life--Finn being the one seeing through her beautiful mask. I loved how the roles were reversed and it was not she who tried to save him like in stereotypes, but he. Their whole chemistry together was amazing and so strong. And Angelus, my sweetest boy who stood beside Andromeda like her brother.

But with that cliffhanger at the end? Exactly how am I supposed to wait for the next book!? God, I am crying right now.

The worldbuilding, I must admit wasn't that deeply described. A character-driven story, which I loved reading. The plot was quite good. From the very first beginning, the story flowed fast and easily. I was never bored and never felt like skipping. The Heir caught my complete attention and caused me to fall into its beautiful abyss of arms. I liked how the purpose wrapped up, but that end cliffhanger? I am so mad and broken, Benet you made me cry in the middle of the day.

I applaud you for this amazing story you brought to life and that writing style? Damn, I am so happy a new writer like you will be able to share her imagination with us. I cannot wait to read more of your books!

"Artemis smiled again, a patronizing smile that acknowledged her effort to lie, but warned her that he could smell it all the same."

Small town doctor Finn hides a secret that could get him killed: he helps smuggle Wielders, people with magic, to another kingdom, where they aren't prosecuted and executed for their powers. So when royal guards kidnap him, and take him to the royal castle, he fears for his loved ones' life. It turns out, though, that Queen Andromeda has something different in mind for him: if Finn can help her carry out her vengeance, she'll leave his people alone. There are wrongs that need to be righted, and she won't rest until she sees to it. Together with Andromeda's loyal guard, Angelus, the two of them form an unlikely alliance, which will have to prove itself strong enough to resist the attacks of those who'd rather see Andromeda dead.

"Life is a game. The only say we have in the matter is if we will be a player, or a pawn."

Dark, intense, and suspenseful, "The Heir" is one of those stories that will stay with you long after you've turned the last pages, and closed the book. With an immersive prose and an agile plot, Stoen weaves a tale of court intrigue, revenge, and suffering, which quickly had me in its clutches. Although at first I was worried mostly about Finn's quest to keep his people safe, soon enough I found myself fascinated by Andromeda's story. As the story developed, and the stakes grew higher with every passing chapter, I often needed to catch my breath, unable to drop the book but also in need of a break. You've been warned: this isn't for the faint of heart. Serious issues, listed as comprehensively as possible below, are touched on or represented, and Stoen doesn't shy away from the ugliest side of power and royalty. Instead, she weaves these topics into a plot that's as ambitious and ellaborate as it is addictive. Once I was past the 40% mark, I needed to know what happened next more than I needed sleep!

"Just because she's all you need, doesn't mean you're all she needs."

One of the book's best things were the two main characters, Andromeda and Finn. Queen Andromeda is one of the three royals that currently rule over the kingdom of Ladvia. As the Mother Queen, she's responsible for providing the kingdom with at least three babies that will grow up into the next Three Queens of Ladvia; her other two sistes are in charge of ruling the kingdom, and leading its army to keep it safe. Although Andromeda may look like the weakest of the three Queens, her intelligence, thirst for revenge, and refusal to go down without a fight make her one of the strongest fictional royals I've read about in a while. She's been hurt by many people, and hides bleeding wounds behind her sarcasm and cold demeanour; and she won't rest until justice is served. Her pain and suffering were intense enough that I sometimes started crying from the powerlessness I felt that she'd had to go through so much; nonetheless, she found it in herself to stay one step ahead of everything else, and wove extraordinary plans and strategies to keep her plans afloat. She's bound to be a fan favourite!

Finn, on the other hand, isn't (at first) plagued by darkness the way Andromeda is. A man of onour and a compassive doctor, all he wants is to return to his town, to the people that need him to ease their suffering. Soon, though, he starts suspecting that Andromeda may need him more than she cares to admit for that same reason; and what follows is a mild corruption arc of sorts, as he sees how cruel the world can be even to a woman born to privilege and wealth. He was a warm presence on the page, and his genuine worry for Andromeda was one of the most heartfelt things I've read about as of lately. If I grew so invested in this story, it was because of the two of them!

"Finn (...) was like a candle, a light you could hold out in front of you and use to light the way."

Although not much worldbuilding is shown in this first installment, which left me wanting more information about Ladvia and its traditions, the courtly atmosphere was excellently done. I found myself walking along as Finn ran Andromeda's errands, standing in Andromeda's royal chambers, and running my fingers across the spines of the Royal Library's books. I maybe would've liked to have more time to adjust to the court and its deceits before chaos broke out, but I still really enjoyed the plot, and found it to be perfectly well-paced. That ending, though!? To say that I was shocked would be an understatement. I need to know what the heck's going to happen in the next installments! How could the book end like that!?

All in all, this is a dark, twisted debut that will appeal to dark fantasy lovers and anyone in search of a somber tale of revenge, the limits of one's goodness, and the ugly face of power. Pick this book up, and get ready to be swept away to the Kingdom of Ladvia; you won't be able to stop reading!

Well, after that ending, I don’t know if I can wait for the next book 😅

This is a rather dark fantasy that deals with some very dark subjects, with a dash of romance in there. Finn is a doctor in a small village keeping his head down by day, and by evening, helps magic Wielders who are persecuted for who they are by taking them to a safe house. The Mother Queen then sends for him. So, Finn is arrested and taken to the Mother Queen who offers him position(or rather blackmails him) as her personal physician in exchange to help her save the Wielders by stopping the man behind the deaths of many Wielders.

I adored Finn! He’s just a good, loyal, protective, and kind person. Despite how Andromeda treated him, he had patience and just was kind to her, which she’s not used to. As a doctor, he cared more than allowing his situation and treatment cause him to resent the Queen. He’s just a big cinnamon roll 😍

Now, Andromeda. I did not like her 😂 At least at first. I wouldn’t say I loved her in the end, but I understood her and why she acted the way she did. She definitely is a queen and acted like one, but also acted spoiled at times which drove me nuts. She also tends to push people away and does not trust easily(which is understandable once you read what she has gone through and endured by herself, it’s horrifying and heartbreaking). After I learned more about her character and her past, a lot of things made sense, and Finn was the perfect person to help her.

I will say there are some major trigger warnings in this book such as talk of assault, self harm, suicide attempts, and a lot of talk about death. It’s a pretty dark and sad story, but also a story about love and family and what one will do to save their family. If you love darker fantasies, I recommend this one! And like I said at the beginning, I can hardly wait for the next book!

Thank you to the author for sending me a free e-arc to read and review.

Wow this book 😍
First of all, thank you so much to the author, Benét Stoen, for sending me a free ecopy of this book to read and review. I thoroughly enjoyed it and am eagerly awaiting the sequel! ❤️
I honestly have no words to describe how beautiful this book is. The story was a dark, romantic, and stunning masterpiece. I fell so hard for some of the characters and cried so hard in some parts. Everything about this book was beautiful and gripping. It was impossible to put down!

I loved all the characters in this book. Finn has my entire heart, my golden boy with the sun in his eyes. Andromeda was such a well-developed, dark, and powerful queen. And Angelus was so loyal and dedicated to his queen which I loved. All of the characters completely drew me in to the story and left me heartbroken at every twist. I knew from the beginning that this book was going to end badly. But the ending still absolutely destroyed me, I simply couldn't function for a bit after reading it.
The writing style was so beautiful and descriptive, I was drawn into the story from the very first page.
I am absolutely obsessed with this book now and I don't know how I am expected to wait for the next book! I can't wait to find out what happens. I also loved the little bit of Veronica that we got in this book and I can't wait to find out more about her in book two!
I definitely recommend this stunning book to anyone who loves dark fantasy romance and a stunningly descriptive and emotional story.
Note: this book does deal with some heavy concepts so make sure to check trigger warnings.

“ Three crowns do rule the land, Three thrones under, do we stand. One to bear the chosen three , One champion that will lay siege , One to be our sovereignty. No ruler dared cross the Royal Three Their rule did give us days of peace. Three crowns, that together band did free the Magic Across the land. “

I want to start by saying a huge thank you to Ms. Stoen for sending me a digital review copy of The Heir!

THIS BOOK IS AMAZING AND EVERYONE NEEDS TO READ IT!! Okay now that I have gotten that out of my system, time to tell you why.
Firstly The Heir is a gender bent retelling of Hades and Persephone, andI I could not put it down. I was hooked as soon as I read “Three crowns do rule the land, three crowns under do be stand. “ I immediately wanted to know about the queens and the magic. I absolutely adore Andromeda, and Finn. I really enjoyed watching them grow has individuals , and in their relationship. I love that there is minimal romance in book one, and that they establish a strong bond/friendship. Another character that warmed my heart was Angelus, he is strong and stoic , but I also think he is a precious tender soul that I can’t wait to discover more about. Book one ended on a cliffhanger that by detention is completely ILLEGAL!! I can not wait for book 2, I need it ASAP because HOLY BLEEP!! I can safely say that The Heir is amazing from the first to last page. I highly recommend reading it, and I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

“It was a feeling, a presence, more than it was something to look directly at. It wasn’t distracting but calming. Grounding. Reassuring. It was something else, something other, something that was deeper than the surface”.

I was honoured to receive The Heir in exchange for an honest review. Thank you so much Benet for the opportunity and the journey your book sent me on.

First off, I want to say that this book was absolutely amazing! I was engaged from the first page!

In this gender-bent reimaging of Persephone and Hades, the characters of Finn and Andromeda (respective to their counterparts) were displayed with so much depth that we got to see row and develop throughout the book. I adored these two and loved seeing both their characters and relationship grow.

Finn – the physician. He was such a lovely soul. He was good and loyal, protective of those he cared about, despite how he was treated.
Andromeda – the Queen. Like yes okay she can be a bitch at times, but it was refreshing to see a woman in power and so callous! As the story continued, you saw her past, you see why she has to act the way she does and it’s so heartbreaking! I really wanted the best for her! And the way Finn could bring out the best in her was also heartbreakingly beautiful.
Angelus – the guard. A figure in the shadow that would protect Andromeda with his life! Although he was this dark and mysterious character, I hope to learn more about him and his story in the next book!

Now the only thing I did not like about this book was…. IT ENDED IN THE MOST CLIFFHANGER OF CLIFFHANGERS! HOW DARE YOU AHAHAH
I HAVE SO MANY QUESTIONS… I NEED TO KNOW WHAT HAPPENS NOW!

Again, I want to say thank you to Benet for this opportunity and I can’t wait to read more from you in the future (especially what happens next ffs)

TW: this book is a dark fantasy and may talk about or include triggers such as depression, death, torture, self-harm, suicidal thoughts, ideation and attempts as well as mention of sexual assault/rape

I was honored to read The Heir in exchange for an honest review. Thank you so much Benet!

I really did enjoy this story!! I loved the concept behind it and the characters were all so different and defined. Andromeda's determination and Finn's sweetness, and the story itself was easy to read!

One thing I did have an issue with however, was some of the developmental choices and the ending. I don't even want to call it an issue, I feel like that's not the right word >.< But there were some developments made at the end that just felt a bit rushed to me as did the ending. The entire story we were lead to believe certain things about Artemis's intentions and such involving the kingdom and the other two sisters, but at the end of the book Andromeda started seeing things {or not, it was uncertain and left up to the reader to decide ;)} and I could definitely realize and sense the trauma she was going through (and had gone through in her childhood) but part of me just felt like someone would have noticed something, especially Finn. There was also a random moment where Finn actually runs into the high queen in the hallway. It really took me by surprise because the entire story she's either sleeping or only seen at council meetings, so it almost felt too sudden or random and not quite believable to me that no one else would question it.

Then the ending, which don't get me wrong, I LOVE cliffhangers, but it felt just a bit TOO sudden to me? And I didn't personally feel like there was enough development behind it! Especially considering the conspiracies left to the reader to assume of who was behind it.

That being said, I want to enforce that this is just my personal opinion and overall I did enjoy the story! I'm still curious to know what happens next, and I would still recommend this story for sure!

I really enjoyed this gender-bent Hades & Persephone re-imagining dark psychological fantasy!

The story is about Finn, who leads two lives. One of a simple country doctor, and the other of a smuggler with cargo of a rare variety: Wielders, a nearly extinct race of people born with the ability to control Magic. One day he was taken by the royal guards ordered by Andromeda, who was selected at birth to inherit the role of Mother Queen to continue her family’s royal line. Andromeda has waited years for her chance to exact revenge on those who stole her freedom. Now she wants Finn to help to bring down the man who tore her family apart and the one behind the attack on the Wielders.

I like that Finn was the soft boy one and Andromeda was the grumpy one. It was a fresh take since in most of the books I read the roles are opposite. I honestly was not really into Andromeda at first but she slowly grew on me. The writing was good, it made me feel for all the ache and burden that Andromeda felt.

Other than the two main characters, there was Andromeda's personal guard named Angelus and I like him a lot. I always have a thing for side characters hehe. I wish we could see him and maybe Veronica more in the next book.

But I have to say that the world-building need a little more development, but I like it. It was a pretty good introduction to the whole story.

And after that cliffhanger, I'm not sure I can wait any longer!!! Where's the sequel!?

Thank you so much to Benét Stoen for sending me an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.

☆3.5☆

I received an e-ARC in exchange for an honest review.

I'm trying to formulate my words on this novel. It's by no means a difficult read, a unique dark fantasy. While intriguing, I am not sure this was the right novel for me. I never fully connected to the characters. I am generally picky about multiple POV, and this is one of those cases that leaves me on edge because I feel like we never got enough insight into any of them to give us a chance to connect. I liked Finn, disliked Andromeda, but didn't love or hate them. I was more intrigued by background characters and their stories that I wish we had learned more about. Who was Angelus? Why does Artemis hate Magic? Where was the third sister and why wasn't she involved? Why are we introduced to Veronica like she's going to be a major character only for her to trickle into the background? Maybe some of these will be answered in the next book, but there were even more questions that came about outside of character ones, so I wish at least a few had been clarified.

I never fully connected with the writing, and the pacing felt uneven. I love a cliffhanger ending, but I felt like the ending left more questions that weren't even hinted at before the last two chapters.

That being said, I really enjoyed the premise and am curious to know what happens next! However, I do warn those wanting to read that this book deals with very heavy topics like (TW): depression, self-harm, suicide, assisted suicide, sexual abuse, mental/emotional abuse, and rape.

“She was risking everything by trusting this man. But it took truth to gain trust.”

this genderbend retelling of hades and persephone was really refreshing and interesting to read. it's a story of family, love, vengeance and power. i was captivated by the family history, the political setting and how the power works.

andromeda is a morally grey main character that i can't help but root for. she is a strong queen and a brave sister. it was emotional knowing the pain that she has gone through physically and emotionally. the scene of finn caring for andromeda felt lovely to read. i really adored finn. i like how he always strives to do the right thing even if it's not easy. he is kind and thoughtful which makes him such a gentle soul. i wasn't sure how to feel about finn and andromeda's relationship at first, but i grew to love them together.

however, the characters and their intents still felt flimsy to me. i wasn't as gripped because i expected more from the story (and the romantic relationship) but all in all it was alright. i enjoyed the politics and critical issues that the author raised in this story. i also liked the commentary on the use of herbs and all that.

that ending??? that was so unexpected and i'm still reeling from it.

this dark and intense fantasy is perfect for readers who want to get lost in all the political intrigue, family secrets and unique characters with a mythical undertow.

i would like to thank Bénet Stoen for sending me a copy in exchange for a review!

I had the opportunity to do an early read of this novel and was absolutely blown away! I had heard of this book through social media for some months until I had the opportunity to meet Benet Stoen and she asked if I would do an ARC read for her. Normally, when a book is hyped up the way The Heir was for me, I am usually let down when I do read it. But I can tell you that this book had me riveted from the start. Finn is the hero that all readers love to read about. He is loyal, noble, caring, willing to give, and stands up for what he believes in. I know, it sounds like a typical hero, but wait until you hear about his co-star, Andromeda, my Red Queen. She comes out of the gate vicious, cold, and ready to shed blood. I was a bit taken aback by her at first, but then as you read her story throughout the book, your heart will simply want to reach out and take hold of her and keep her close to you. With amazing narrative, complex characters, a storyline that is riveting, and emotions that cut deep, this book will make you want to read it over and over and over again. This book lived up to, nay, super-ceded all of my expectations, and book 2 of the trilogy cannot come out soon enough.

This was a 3.5 to 3.75 stars for me! I found the story very interesting and had many theories that evolved the more I read. I do have lots of questions but as this is the first book, I know those will be answered in time. I enjoyed both characters, their stories, especially Andromeda’s, are dark so be aware when thinking about picking this up. I would like a little more character details especially for the side characters and more world building because at times it felt a little surface level and I needed more information, but overall I think it’s good!

Must I say, that cliffhanger was so rude. I was like oh we’re close to the end but this feels like a weird place to stop, and then I was shocked. Im intrigued to see where this goes. Thank you to the author for sending me a free e-arc for an honest review.

~About

The Heir is a fantasy novel set in the land of Lavdia. Finn, a young physician living in a small border village is arrested on The Mother Queen Andromeda’s authority. Much to his surprise, the young queen demands his help, to take down a mutual enemy, Artemis. As her sister’s twisted advisor, Artemis seeks to eradicate the land of those with innate magical ability, otherwise known as Wielders. Together, Finn and Queen Andromeda must find a way to save the wielders and Andromeda’s sister before it’s too late.

~Characters

While reading The Heir, four main characters stood out to me: Finn, Queen Andromeda, Angelus, and Artemis.

Finn, a young physician, has been helping Wielders reach a sanctuary to escape the cruelty of those who would do them harm. He is introduced as a kindly young man, who seeks positive change. Both patient and honest, he is determined to help others in need. Furthermore, his personal journey sees his sense of morality shift, from a rigid black and white view of morality at the start, to one that considers broader factors in how people act.

Queen Andromeda (The Mother Queen) initially appeared harsh and cruel, however, her character was further revealed over time, offering up a more complex personality and backstory than I had originally imagined. She seemed like a prisoner in her role, as indicated by her own words: ‘I was born in shackles. I just want to be free.’ As the story progressed, fragments of her tragic and tormented past surfaced, explaining so much of Andromeda’s behaviour, particularly how she pushes away anyone that shows they care for her. It was clear that as time progressed, the level of pain she had endured in her lifetime had taken a heavy toll on her, one that deeply affected her mental state and led to her closing up and putting on a front for others.

Angelus acted as Queen Andromeda’s personal bodyguard. It was hard to get a read on him as he was a rather blunt and private man, who seldom spoke when he was present in scenes. He had a serious demeanour and felt rather mysterious to me as a character as I barely learned anything about him or his past. He had an obvious affection for Queen Andromeda and was devoted to keeping her safe and carrying out her wishes.

Finally, we come to Artemis, royal advisor to Andromeda’s sister Queen, Morgeoux. I instantly disliked him. His smug and condescending presence got under my skin, as did his unusually calm demeanour, which hid his darker motivations from plain sight. His brutal actions over the course of the story proved he was not a man to be trifled with, however, I had no respect for him, as I did for Finn and his more noble actions.

~Likes

The Heir was a bit different to the books I usually read. While fantasy is one of my favourite genres, the scope of this book was much smaller than expected. The story was mainly set within a few rooms of a single castle, and centred around a plot, which seemed to shift from being about the Wielders and their rights, to saving Andromeda’s sister from Artemis’ dark influence. That being said, there were several things I really liked about this book.

-The characters were portrayed well, with strong personalities. Queen Andromeda, in particular, made a strong first impression on me and engaged my emotional senses.

-The character’s differing perspectives (those of Finn and Queen Andromeda) allowed me to understand the story’s main conflict from multiple angles. Each main character believed that their actions were fully justified, in order to reach their goal, even if the other disagreed.

-The author’s writing style was very professional. They had a firm grasp on the craft of writing and to me, seemed like a natural storyteller.

-There were several good twists throughout the book, especially relating to Queen Andromeda’s past, that I didn’t see coming.

-The story is separated neatly into three more or less equal parts, which I thought was a nice touch.

-The ending was surprising and had my heart in my throat as my expectations were shattered.

I don’t have anything negative to say about this book, except that at times, I felt it could do with more action and less summarised narrative.

~Memorable Quotes

Two particular quotes stood out to me while reading The Heir.

1) ‘She was risking everything by trusting this man. But it took trust to gain trust.’
2) ‘They hide behind a cause to justify their actions.’

This second quote felt especially relevant to our own modern world as a plethora of narcissistic people pretend to support various causes, while trying to assuage feelings of guilt, with some committing atrocious acts in the name of support.

~Overview

Overall, The Heir was a masterfully crafted piece of creative writing, with complex characters and a tension-fuelled plot. There were many unexpected twists which caught me off guard, yet which made the book even more enjoyable. Key themes included family, secrets, loss, and magic.

My Rating: 5 stars.
Recommended to: lovers of fantasy series, with dark secrets, royals, and unexpected twists.

First I would like to thank the author for a free e-copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.

Wow! This book blew my mind. It was so nice to finally see the reverse of the "soft healer girl falls for hardened prince" trope. I loved the characters so much. They all had their differences and unique qualities, but they all also worked well together. It was a nice intermingling of characters.

Andromeda was beautifully tragic. You didn't quite understand and in one moment I disliked her, but in the next, I just wanted her to be happy. It was such an odd mix of feelings, but I'll be damned if I didn't care for her. Angelus was the brother-like figure to her, someone to share in her pain, but still kept at arm's length.

And Finn! What a beautiful protagonist to follow. Morals that were slowly being chipped at, conflicted emotions within his character that we also felt as readers and an overall lovable character. He really is a great foil for Andromeda which is why I say this is a perfect cast for this book.

In terms of plot, there was always something going on. I was never left bored or wanting more. Stoen had me at the edge of my seat just waiting to turn the page on every line. Every move within the plot was interesting and a whirlwind. Romance was there and every time you thought it was going to happen, something was there to interrupt!

While the story seemed to move a little slow at times, as the plot thickened and new things were revealed, I began to understand more and more. I read so quickly through the book that I didn't even realize I was nearing the end. By the end of the book I was left with nothing but "what. the. hell." By all accounts, this is a good thing! The ending gave me a heart attack and with a desperate need for the next installment. Hats off to Stoen for this work of art!

First I want to say thank you to Benet Stoen for sending me an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Tw: Depression, Talk of Death, Self Harm, Attempted Suicide, Suicidal Ideation, Sexual Abuse/Rape, PTSD.

There were things about Benet Stoen's first fantasy novel,The Heir, that I really enjoyed and there were things that just didn't work for me personally.

The first quarter of the book with our MC Finn captivated me right away making it clear the talent this author has with words and storytelling! [He is seriously precious]

My only complaints are that then the pacing slowed to a crawl with nothing much happening till over halfway through the book followed by a mad dash to the finishline and a few surprises that felt rushed.
Parts of the novel often read like a first or second draft of a story that hadn't been fully fleshed out, you could see the carefully laid bones of the story and all this wonderful potential that just needed a little more to make the book truly feel full. It made it hard to connect more deeply with Stoen's lovely characters.

I did enjoy the way in which the cliff hanger was applied at the end of the novel and I do plan on reading the next books in the series because despite a few pacing issues I still liked this book and it's characters and I want to see how the rest of this story plays out for our heroes! So many people are loving this book right now, so pick it up if you get the chance and see how you like it!

First of all, I’d like to give a big thank you to the author for sending me a ebook copy of her book ! 💕

So I haven’t read any fantasy in a long time, but from the very first page of The Heir, I got sucked right back in again. I enjoyed the descriptions, I thought they were beautiful, and we get to know the characters better with every chapter !

I wasn’t bored a single moment, and I basically flew through the book in one single day.
I got attached to Finn, Andromeda, Angelus, and Silla, ow my beautiful Silla…

I loved every single one of the characters, Finn, was just a sweet boy, Andromeda, the cruel Queen, who maybe wasn’t so cruel after all, Angelus, the big protector, and sweet sweet Silla.

But the ending… whaaaaat.
I need to read the second book, that’s one thing that’s certain. The cliffhanger at the end of the story is absolutely massive ! I got very frustrated and couldn’t really fall asleep after because of it, but that’s okay!

I can’t wait to discover the other two book in the Royal Three Trilogy, cause I absolutely, absolutely, loved The Heir !

I enjoyed the writing style overall and the characters were vivid. In fact, the book is very character driven, which works well in some books, and this one is no exception. Just know that the world building/setting isn’t as focussed on. This gave some BBC’s Merlin vibes, as magic is looked upon as a threat and there are those who wish to see it stopped. Finn, a doctor, who wants to save wielders of magic, comes to get recruited by a volatile queen with secrets who promises to help him save the wielders if he agrees to dismantle some of the Kingdom’s corruption. I found myself wanting to see what happens next each chapter of The Heir. For me, the action doesn’t pick up until quite a few chapters into the book and it didn’t end as I imagined, but this is only book 1 of a trilogy, so I do recommend it to readers who enjoy dark fantasy, character-driven plots, with hints of magic and mayhem.
Note: There’s serious scenes/themes in the book that could trigger some readers, for example rape and suicide ideation.

* Thank you to Benet Stoen for gifting me an ARC copy of her book. *

My favorite part about this book is you can tell Stoen wrote a book she wanted to read herself. She starts her book right in the middle of all the action missing no marks ;drawing you in immediately to ask questions and demand answers.
She has such a nice flow of writing. Never did I feel cringe or did the words feel to clunky. The rhythm of her writing allows all her characters to flow so nicely with the plot its beautiful. I must demand an enemies to lovers from her.
The book is set up at the perfect pace for her to continue the series. She dives into a plot unique and mesmerizing weaving characters that you care for but at the same time stay on edge around. It's a fantasy story that is built with time and patience from Stoen. She knows how to grasp your attention from start to finish wondering what's going to happen next.

A heartbreakingly beautiful tale that will wrench tears mercilessly from your eyes.

I can’t even begin to explain how much this book wrecked me. The characters are so vivid, the writing a perfect balance between descriptions and dialogue. The intrigue had me flipping the pages until I couldn’t flip anymore and my heart had been torn from my chest. This story is so masterfully told until the bitter end.

Fantasy is definitely not my genre, but if I was going to read it, it would have to be as good as this!
A page turner to be sure, and a very gripping story.

Huge thank you to Benét Stoen for providing me with this e-ARC in exchange for my honest review. I received an email from Benet with the first chapter of her new book, The Heir, and I was totally hooked!

This is a difficult one for me to review because I really enjoyed the concept and the story, but I didn’t love how it was written. I truly did enjoy this story! The concept behind The Heir is totally unique and definitely captivated me. This story was a quick and easy read!

My main issues with The Heir all revolve around the development and pacing of the story. The entirety of the plot felt very point A to point B . . . almost like an outline. It felt like everything that happened was very clinical. Thing A happened then thing B then C with nothing happening in between. I wanted more interaction between the characters, more daily life, and much more world-building. Now, don’t get me wrong, I think all of the plot points were exciting and super interesting. I just wish there was more in between. This caused me to feel very disconnected from the characters. I knew them in each event, but never outside of this. What does Finn get up to when he’s not helping Andromeda? Does Angelus ever explore? What were his journeys like to check on Veronica? Again, the best way I can describe The Heir is that it was like an outline . . . all the plot points laid out with none of the extra content added in between. I just wanted more!

I will say that I am very impressed with the author’s ability to write mental illness. There are characters who suffer from depression, PTSD, and suicidal ideations. Stoen wrote this in a respectful way without any judgment. There were definitely scenes that were difficult to read though. Check out my trigger warnings at the end of this post.

I also was not sold on the pacing. The plot seemed rushed. This was especially true for the ending. Everything became kind of jumbled at the end and I’m not sure if the author intended this or not. The story felt like it took a hard left into a different direction when Andromeda began to see things.

The Heir felt more like a first or second draft rather than a final finished book. I loved the author’s ideas and concepts, but I think it wasn’t executed in the best way. This is all my personal opinion and it seems like most on goodreads have absolutely loved this book!

That all being said, I did like the cliffhanger ending! I definitely want to know who was behind it and what it all means. I am curious to see what happens next. I really did enjoy this story and the unique world + concept.

The Heir is the first book of the Royal Three trilogie and is written from the perspective of Finn and Andromeda.
Finn is a simple doctor who lives in a small village near the border. He lives a simple, settled live but he has a big secret: he smuggles Wielders. Wielders are rare humans with the ability to control magic. They are threatened by the people who are in control and who are supposed to be protecting them. Finn wants to give them to opportunity to live a better life. One day he gets kidnapped and blackmailed by none other than one of the three queens who rule the country. Andromeda. Selected at birth for the role of Mother Queen, her sole purpose in life is to produce the next heirs to continue the royal family line. But Andromeda has a goal of her one, she wants revenge for her destroyed family, but she can't do it on her own and needs the help of a doctor.

Finn is, unlike many male protagonists in fantasy books, an absolutely kind an goodhearted person, who is selfless and loyal dispite the circumsatances. Now matter how bad Andromeda treas him, he never loses his temper and patience with her and Andromeda is very different from him. Raised as a queen and often behaves spoiled, bossy and stubborn. Deep down she is a depressed an broken person and tries to hide this with her behavior. She doen't have many people she can trust, but Finn is able to break through the walls she build to protect herself.

The Heir is quite a dark fantasy story and there are a few triggers warnings to be aware of: self harm, suicide attempts, talk about assult, depression and alcoholism. A lot of theses problems make sense when you learn more about Andromedas backstory.
Benét Stoen created a super interesting world with a complex political system. Hopefully you'll learn more about the Wielders and the world they are living in because in the first book the story mostyl takes place in the queen's palace and you don't get to know much about the world outside.
I really liked that you don't have the typical grumpy male and bubbly female protagonits in this story. You get a few hints that Andromeda and Finn develop feelings for each other, but The Heir is not a lovestory about these two. It's more about how they grow together and individually. I also really liked Angelus, Andromedas super loyal personal guard, but you don't get to know much about his backstory, hopefully in the next books.
I will definitly read the next book and not only because there is a major cliffhanger at the end!

I received The Heir by Benet Stoen for free by the author in exchange for an honest review. Thank you so much for this advanced copy! This review is also available on my blog - Book, Blog & Candle!

I was immediately intrigued when I read the blurb for The Heir and as soon as I saw that it was a gender-bent Hades/Persephone retelling I knew I had to read it and spoiler alert for my review I am OBSESSED!

Our main character is Finn, a young doctor in a small town who is secretly helping 'Wielders' flee from the discriminatory country and find safe haven in a nearby sanctuary. One day he is summoned by the fearsome Queen Andromeda and is suddenly involved in a plot to bring down one of the most powerful and dangerous men in the country who is currently pulling the strings behind the royal family and behind the attacks on the magic users. Faced with a common enemy the Queen and Finn must work together to pull off their ruse or risk the lives of everyone.

The plot line was so engaging and interesting I had trouble putting the book down and literally read over half of it in one sitting! I was immediately swept up in the world and it is a true page turner. The characters were amazing and I love Andromeda so much! Her chemistry with Finn was so well done and it was definitely an excellent addition to the enemies to lovers trope!

Plus, the worldbuilding was absolutely SENSATIONAL! I really enjoyed the royal/political system throughout the book and thought it fit the plot line so well. It is the perfect read for fans of Queen of Coin and Whispers!

The Heir is definitely a new favourite for me and I am in desperate need for the sequel because OMG that ending!! I have adored every single minute of this story and I can't thank Benet Stoen enough for getting in touch and trusting me with this beautiful story! It has been a pleasure to review. The Heir is one of those special books where I got the immediate feeling that it is going to be a massive hit! A fantastic story with absolutely incredible writing and a subtle greek mythology influence - it HAS to be the next big bookstagram book! I'm sorry in advance for the person I'm about to become because I am NEVER going to stop talking about this book!

MY THOUGHTS:

This book drew me in from the synopsis alone. I simply knew I would like this book. It’s my kind of story. It starts really well, with our doctor breaking the law in order to help those in need and after that, it’s full of intrigues and dark places. The third queen is a very complicated woman but with her reasons to be so. It’s an easy read. I can say I read the book in two days. And now, Benét Stoen, tell me: HOW LONG DO I HAVE TO WAIT FOR THE SECOND BOOK?! Because that ending killed me!!!

WHAT I LIKED:

- Finn is a wonderful person. The kind of person you want to keep around. He does everything in his power to help others, even after they do him wrong.

- Although I disliked Andromeda in the beginning, I was really connected with her by the end. She’s an intriguing character, with a huge dark past.

- I loved Angelus! Although he’s a side character and we don’t know much about him, I think he’s wonderful and mysterious. I really hope to see more of him...and of course Veronica.

- The plot was really good and the ending absolutely killed me. I can’t deal with that ending and I need the second book immediately!

WHAT I DIDN'T LIKE:

- I think the world building needed more development but, who knows, maybe we’ll see more of it in the second book.

- The first half of the book is really slow-paced, not much going on. It was easy to read though. Benét’s writing is really good in my opinion.

CONCLUSION:

I had a feeling I would like it, but not that I would like it this much! If you’re into dark fantasy you must absolutely read this book!

THIS BOOK STALKER CONFESSES:
PLOT: ★★★★
CHARACTERS: ★★★★
WRITING: ★★★★★
COVER: ★★
OVERALL: ★★★★

“I want to protect them because they’re people. Just like us. Just like you.”

OMG, this is freaking amazing!! I didn’t know the book or the author until she emailed me but now, now I really need to buy her books!

This is one was such a good surprise. I didn’t know nothing about it but after some chapters it becomes really good. And in the part 2… well, I become addicted to the story.

I loved the characters, the drama, the mystery… oh, and it gave me “Throne of Glass” vibes (my favourite saga) so I just loved it even more.

The character development was really good too, and I have a big crush on Finn. What a man!! I really need to see him with Andromeda cause, after all, they are good for each other in their own way.

Obviously, I love dark romance and this one promises a lot more of this good surprises.

“To him, it meant a name. A title. A higher rank. But also a trust, and a belief that he was good enough.”

There are other characters that I liked, as Silla or Angelus. Oh and I really want to know more about Veronica, I think she will be important too.

Now, about the final, WHAT WAS THAT??? I’M FREAKING OUT CAUSE… WHAT? It cannot finish like that… Now I don’t know what to think and I have a lot more questions. Really, this cliffhanger is going to drive me crazy.

Like, the whole book is about something and the end, all the plan and work can be ruined because of what happened in that last moment and I… I don’t know what to think.

I loved all the book, but the last chapters, no, the last part of it, it was simply incredible because I just stayed reading and reading and I didn’t even saw that I was finishing the ebook until it was done. So yes, the writing is really good too.

Oh, if you are beginning reading in English, I think this one has a simple vocabulary for you to understand easily despite the world building that can be a little more difficult to interpret. But recommend it either way!!

If you are interested in fantasy books, with dark romance and a lot of mystery and drama, this book was made for you.

I was lucky to receive a free ebook copy of The Heir and ended up finishing the book in a day because I was addicted! The Heir is a gender-bent Hades and Persephone retelling, following the two paths of Finn and Andromeda, intertwining together from different sides to achieve their goals.

Initially, the story was a little slow but it progressed rather quickly, making it an easy read that hooks the audience along this intense journey. Although there are constant questions arising about each character’s backstory, Benét does a wonderful job with escalating this slow burn, while providing sufficient answers that provide just enough satisfaction in the moment.

What was incredibly unique is the depiction of a morally grey queen. Tropes generally favor a stubborn male and a soft-hearted female, so this difference made it much more compelling. Even in this first book, it’s obvious Andromeda is a strong example of female empowerment as a clever woman who never allows others to push her around unless it benefits her intentions. While she has a viscous side, this emerges from a broken past, inciting curiosity to learn what she carefully conceals. Simultaneously, her kindness and desire for love cannot be easily hidden by the tough facade maintained. I found myself captivated to her beautifully tragic and complex character, along with how she represents those individuals whose biggest enemy is not another person, but rather their own self-depreciation.

Overall, I would highly recommend starting this series! It’s a simple read yet the stakes continue to rise throughout as a dark and intriguing plot emerges. I do feel like the story could benefit from more buildup, both in general and romantic aspects, but the lack does not take away from the character-driven story itself. The cliffhanger also left me speechless and I’m planning to find the next book because I NEED to know what happens!

Benét Stoen is clearly a talented, underrated writer and with how fascinating and equally mysterious this book is, I hope more people check out the series! There are some triggering topics addressed so be aware of those before you read!

I know I haven’t shared my thoughts on a book in a little while, but I was lucky to receive a copy of The Heir by Benét Stoen, in exchange for an honest review! After some well needed reunited time with my kindle, I finally finished it and I honestly have no words for that ending.

(Content Warnings, there is a lot of darker and saddening topics in this book)

Now I absolutely adore royal based fantasy books with unique magic systems (cough, Twin Crowns, Folk of the Air, cough) and this was no different. Our main character, Finn, is a doctor in a small village who also secretly spends his time helping to smuggle Wielders, an endangered species of magic-users, to a safe haven. However, after he is kidnapped by Lavdia’s Third Queen, he is roped into a revenge plot where his morals and more importantly his heart are called into question.

I genuinely got really attached to Finn throughout this book and the way his reactions and feelings are so genuinely human throughout. Most of the time we’re thrown a book full of tough and strong characters, rather than characters that would actually run away screaming if they could (Finn doesn’t do this, but I wouldn’t have put it past him..) and Angelus also had a soft spot for me, especially with his protectiveness without limiting his emotional side (but the fact this man just throws himself off balconies into trees?? Is he a squirrel in disguise?)

I was slightly disappointed to not learn too much about how the magic system works, the concept of the Wielders was so interesting to me at the start, but I’m sure the rest of the series will detail that more and honestly this book had enough going on to keep my mind questioning EVERYTHING. I do however feel as if the big evil/enemy presence in this book was really distant, but I hope the other books will give us more of an insight to Artemis and the other Queens.

The plot itself, although dark, was so so captivating and I really couldn’t have guessed the direction it was going in (honestly I was with Finn whenever Andromeda changed the plan without telling them). I’m really excited to read more about this world (and Angelus) and I can’t wait to see where this series goes.

Rating: 3.5/5

Content Warning: depression, self-harm, death, rape, abuse, suicidal thoughts and ideation.

I received a copy of The Heir from the author in return for an honest review. Thank you so much!

Described as a gender-bent Hades and Persephone retelling, This is the first book in a new high fantasy trilogy. This was a unique high fantasy read, not like something I’ve read before. Despite being fantasy, this is filled with several dark and intense themes.

I was captivated by our cold-hearted Queen and our caring physician. Especially, Andromeda, she was one bad bitch. And despite being kidnapped and blackmailed, Finn took his role as her physician seriously and grew to truly care for her.

Besides this H+P love story trope, we also see our two main characters are fighting to save the kingdom from a corrupt leader set on removing magic from their world. And this is where I struggled. I felt there were several avenues missed, lacking details.

Magic is a big aspect within our story, but we’re never properly introduced to it. It felt as if it was there but only in the background especially as we focus mostly on the love birds. Don’t get me wrong I truly enjoyed following them. But I felt confused ~ What is going on here? I feel like adding these details later simply won’t have the same impact as learning them in this first book.

And you know those season finale episodes where you don’t know the fate of some of your characters? That is where we are at. I NEED TO KNOW WHAT HAPPENED! You can’t just end it like that! You evil, evil person. While I have my speculations of what could happen next. Just know, I AM DEVASTED by this ending. And I wholeheartedly plan on continuing this series.

Overall, while I didn’t love everything within this unique retelling, I found this to be an addicting dark fantasy that I can see several others enjoying as well.

But please keep in mind, this is not for the faint of heart. This is filled with several dark and intense themes.

I was given an ARC in exchange for a review but all opinions are entirely my own.

Wow I really got sucked into this one! I almost finished it in one sitting. I just really wanted to know what happens. And let me tell you, not one thing happened that I could have predicted. I had wanted to read this after the author had posted either the first few pages or chapter. It drew me in and, again, I wanted to see where the story lead. A young, mysterious doctor in a small village, not all what he seemed. Three queens, equally mysterious. We get to know one a bit better, the Mother Queen, and she is utterly compelling and complex. Andromeda has seen darkness and pain, and herself wields them as part of her own arsenal.

I feel it’s best to go into this story not knowing too much. Just know it is a dark, deadly tale and will leave you feeling strangely unsettled but utterly intrigued. Also, please check out the trigger warnings! Definitely some difficult subject matter. Usually I struggle more with this but it did not feel gratuitous, just a bit difficult to hear sometimes. However, I did feel like it helped to know the depths of certain characters suffering, which def helped explain their complexity and motivation.

I look forward to hearing a bit more about Wielders and how their magic works. We didn’t get into that too much and I’m very curious what exactly the magic systems is like. Also: where is the warrior queen? So interested in what she has been up to! I look forward to seeing what happens next! Definitely leaves you wondering: what WILL happen next?!

Overall I think it was a 3.5 for me: Interesting plot, compelling characters. Just the world wasn’t quite fleshed out as I personally prefer and some plot points jumped a bit quickly, so I didn’t quite follow the logic. The ending was also quite sudden... but it left me wanting more information! So again, I look forward to the next book! Thank you to the author for the ARC!
