Drama teacher Abby Devlin has always dreamed of being a world-famous actress. While stardom has, so far, proven elusive, she has made quite a name for herself at McMillan Playhouse, where she’s just been cast in a self-written production. Her triumph quickly turns to dread, however, when she learns that McMillan has cast a soap star as her new leading man.
After a painful divorce, Dean Altman, former soap star and a single dad, readjusted his priorities, moving back home to Galveston, Texas with his young daughter, Preslie. It doesn’t take long for him to feel the itch to dust himself off and step back into the acting world, which brings him to McMillan’s stage…and Abby’s attention.
There is a fire between Abby and Dean when they meet in rehearsal, and not the good kind. Sizzling tension leads to drama both on and off-stage, but when they are forced to work together for the sake of the play, they slowly begin to give in to the undeniable chemistry between them. Before they truly have a chance to understand what they might have, however, an opportunity presents itself to Dean—one that could make or break what they have come to find in one another.
Bixby Jones was born and raised in Houston, Texas. Bixby enjoys reading, watching basketball, all things Christmas, and spending time with family, including Tom, the Siamese cat.
Cats Convoluted television plotlines that the novel’s Protagonists can't stop watching HEA There are two cats Hot people People who are doing Their Best Did I mention one of the cats is a kitten? And orange He was named Pumpkin by the Love Interest's daughter, Pressie And the Protagonist has to use her Expert Cat Detecting Skills to find Pumpkin for Pressie when he hides behind the dryer
Bixby's contemporary romance Soulmate, Stage Right is the kind of story that makes me happy. That's what this story is for. There's drama, to move the plot, but it keeps running into two Protagonists who are deeply caring people, who just need to find someone who can give back the wealth of affection they have to offer. They're going to end up together because they make each other happier, fuller people by being together, and they make a little girl and two cats happier that way too.
The plot is a delight, of course. D is a former soap opera star discovering that television and theater call for different skills, and Abby is a high school drama teacher and stage actress who is extremely committed to her craft. And to D's abs. The plot of the soap opera is as confusing and contrived as any Night Beats fan could hope for. (Though I know Bixby - we got this as an ARC - and when I asked, Bixby assured me that she's worked out the plot twists of All or Nothing for seasons to come. And she promised me more soap opera goodness in sequels!) There are well-meaning meddling mothers aplenty, not to mention the twin sisters and friends. But there's no moment where I doubted they belong together.
At its heart, this is a romance about family. It's about people looking out for the ones they love (though it's not always appreciated at the time!) It's about the family you choose, stage friends who are with you for life. Most of all, it’s about the family you make. Two adults, a kid and two cats (one of them an orange kitten named Pumpkin). No wonder this book makes me happy.

summary (NO SPOILERS): h is a part time actress, who tried to pursue a career in NY but wasnt successful. She now works as a drama teacher and is part of a local theater group. H is a former soap star who had everything h ever wanted handed to him and then walked away from it to spend more time at home. h just wrote a play and she is excited to bring it to the stage, but there's just one problem. Her longtime leading man just quit and they dont have anyone to replace him. Enter H. h resents H for coming in and taking over the place even though H is actually the world's biggest cinnamon roll. She just doesn't see it at first. There are a lot of misunderstandings between the MCs that made me think this might be a slow burn but once things got going, they got going quick.
plot: I really liked the plot. The story unfolded well and there weren't anything parts that confused me. The conflicts were well handled and I liked how they were resolved.
characters: I didn't really like h at first because of the way she regarded H. She nitpicked and belittled him a lot at first but later when it was explained why she acted the way she did, I got it. I really really liked H. He was a really good dad and a really nice guy but sometimes he was a little too passive. H's daughter was a good addition to the story too.
side characters were great. H's meddling mom and twin sister. h's judgmental mom. The other actors and staff at the theater. They were all really enjoyable.
narrative: The chapters switch back and forth between h and H's POV which made it easier to understand why they did the things they did. The writing style is 3rd person which I normally don't like because it can be kind of detached, but this wasn't written that way. the writing style is light hearted and informal. There weren't any long descriptive passages and I didn't notice anything really repetitive.
dialogue: Really funny. I enjoyed the way the characters bantered back and forth, especially H and his sister. I also liked that each character had their own 'voice.' They all sounded different from one another.
tropes: miscommunication, enemies to lovers (kind of)
ending: HEA
I really liked this book and I am looking forward to reading more from Bixby Jones.
For Abby, her acting career, both as a drama teacher and theatre, are everything. When famous soap actor “D” shows up, it starts to ruin everything. He is everything she hates about Hollywood acting, and can’t stand the idea of him taking over HER show. So she can’t stop thinking about him. His gorgeous, dimpled smile. His cut, muscular physique now setting into the perfect body of a wonderful father, and… well damn. There goes all of Abby’s preconceptions.
Soul Mates, Stage Right is not a classic enemies to lovers. It's better. Dean tries everything to be a good member of the troupe, while also juggling his responsibilities with work and his daughter. Try as she might to hate him, Abby just cannot stop falling for him, and as the reader, you really, really want to watch her fall for him.
Jones weaves a wonderful story of finding love when and where you don’t want to find it. Her writing is fluid, engaging, and every bit as beautiful as a story like this demands. Without spoiling anymore, this book is one every romance reader should have in their collection. Rarely can I ever get through a book without needing to take writing breaks, but this one I could not put down.
This was easily one of the most cozy reads I’ve had in a while. The chemistry between the two leads was a highlight for me. Things to expect going in is strong writing, realistic characters and cute moments. One thing that I enjoy about this book so much is it’s ability to go there. The author didn’t shy away from the messiness of the relationship. This to me is one of the most realistic romantic relationship I’ve read in a while. The characters are very well fleshed out and well rounded. The cute moments are at 10. The sad moments are high up as well so expect both going in. Overall a heartwarming, cozy read that is a must for your TBR #Dabby
This is one of those stories that just sits in your heart, snuggling in for good. The characters are so real and thought-out. You are eternally rooting for them. You cringe with them, you laugh with them. You cry with them, you love with them.
The author has a real gift for bringing you fully into the story. This is one of those books that could easily be a movie, but in the same respect, also one where you will always prefer the book version best!
I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys romance, but also anyone that wants to feel good about life and living. With the tumults and trials of the current world, you know we could all use a little more of that right now.
Lovely romantic read! The characters in this enemies to friends romance are so interesting. I love that Abby is so dramatic and quick to jump to conclusions, the funnest type of character to read in a romantic novel. Well done! Dino is jut the right amount of clueless but you can easily excuse him much since his heart is in the right place and he’s been burned so many times in the past. I love that this writer cast the man as the single parent! The writing was flawless, with no errors in the book. There was great flow and I was never bored. Thank you for sharing your words!
Soulmate Stage Right is a delight. The love story is heart-warming and real, exactly what I needed on chilly winter evenings. Bixby’s ability to ensnare the reader’s emotions will pull you into the fun, witty world she has created. Dean, Abby, and Preslie are vibrant, lively, and lovely characters who have you rooting for their happiness from the very start. A must read for anyone who enjoys a gentle, feel good romance.
With well written scenes and strong developed characters Bixby Jones takes us on a journey of mistrust, love and finding hope in this romance tale of one woman’s struggle to come to terms with changes in her world. Fast paced action and solid foundations give us a look into the characters minds and motivations throughout the story. I truly look forward to book two of the Love Scenes Series.
This is just what I needed to beat the winter blues. I couldn't stop turning the pages (or the Kindle equivalent)! I fell in love with prickly Abby and protective Dean from the start, and I was rooting them on until the very end. Seeing them grow both as individuals and as a couple was fascinating. Highly recommend this book!
I loved Soulmate: Stage Right. This author has such a beautiful way of writing, I was rooting for these characters! A sexy, vulnerable, single dad and a lovely, sweet, relatable leading lady. Throw in some kittens and drunken video calls and it was perfection!
⭐️⭐️⭐️💫 If you are looking for a cozy romance this is where you should head! I enjoyed my time reading this immensely! Abby, our lead, is a drama teacher and a local theater actor. When Dean, a former soap star, joins the cast Abby starts to think everything is ruined and he is taking the show from her. After meeting Abby can’t get D out of her head. This enemies to lovers is such a cute way to get into this trope. D is a single father with the best little girl known to any book. While the book was a great read I could not get passed how some of D’s reactions were towards Abby when he was angry. I understand he has had some bad past relationships and trust issues, but his anger really triggered me in some ways. Abby on the other hand has some issues with how she perceives other women who she does not know and that was uncomfortable. The 3rd act of this book was a bit long for me because of the miscommunication, but it was still enjoyable.
With the mentions of Thanksgiving, Hanukkah, and Christmas this is a cozy adventure. The writing was fluid and very engaging. I highly recommend this book to anyone looking for a cute romance with some angst. If vulnerable single dads are your thing too than this is perfect!
A major highlight for me was the setting, Houston is my home and reading about characters from there warmed my heart. For me the attention to that and accuracy was a major upvote! *it also helps that my hometown was mentioned a few times because that is very rare in books and media ever!* I found that I had an extra bump to connection with the characters because of the hometown, these could be my neighbors, type feelings that I got from this story!
What I loved about this book is how multi-dimensional and real-to-life the characters are. They aren't perfect, they sometimes jump to conclusions and communicate poorly. But they also apologize, forgive and grow as individuals along the way. Just like a real world romance, you will be both elated and frustrated. This book gives you the whole spectrum of feels. You are rooting for them both the entire way. This author not only does an exemplary job of bringing two characters to life, she has a delightful sense of humor and wonderfully sharp, upbeat prose that has you tearing through the pages.
It's not often I give books 5 stars, but this is the kind of book that resonates with you after you've set it down. Bixby has a magical way with words that completely immerses you into the story. She's taken some favorite romance tropes and given them a unique spin that keeps them refreshing while also not making them feel foreign. Get something warm to drink and cozy up with this book!
Abbey is the star in her own play - something she's very passionate about, but she needs a good, skilled male lead to work with and not just anyone will do. When she learns that an ex soap star was given the lead male role to him, without any say in the matter, and that she's now forced to work with someone she's never even heard of, she can't see past the idea of him just wanting to use them to get back into stardom. Dean just wants to get his foot back in the door after making the big decision to leave Hollywood fame to be a better single dad. The first day he meets Abbey she's not the nicest and he's not really sure this is going to work out. Both make mistakes and have some pretty big misunderstandings, but despite a rough start they can't deny a spark between them as they learn their roles and interactions together. Both Abbey and Dean have been burned/hurt by past lovers, so both are guarded! Years out of the "game" now have them each trying to decide how to best navigate this confusing, but intense new path being forged for them and everyone around them! I loved this book! The characters are well written - realistic, relatable and refreshing! I love that they aren't picturesque, their dilemmas are very likely and their overall dynamic is a rollercoaster of emotions - but so worth the ride! Very enemies to lovers vibe with a second chance sub vibe!
content warnings: smoking, internalized misogyny? (the main character), gaslighting, ‘slutshaming’ (main character and main character’s parent), parental abandonment
mild spoiler below depicting vague summary of a scene 30% into book
+ cute holiday ending + writing style - MC1 spends most of book belittling/ranting about other women - MC2 loses temper and shouts at MC1 in front of coworker asking if she has mental illnesses or needs to be on meds because she’s mad at him - miscommunication trope
I'll have to admit, I really didn't like Abby at first. I found her to be self-centred and sometimes plain rude. However after a few chapters, I was hooked on the progressing story of Abby and Dean, and couldn't wait to finish it. I felt that this book was well written, and the alternating character chapters made for an easy-to-follow read. The setting was different to the usual romance books that I read, but I really enjoyed it. This story is cheesy, uplifting and a definite must-read. This was my first book by Bixby Jones, but certainly won't be the last.
All the characters, regardless of their importance, are fully fleshed out. You get a feel for them and what makes them tick. Bixby does this in various ways, such as humour and self-reflection. The plot avoids melodrama and sappiness. Stereotypical traits or scenarios are minimal. Using animals in pivotal parts of the narrative was a great way to move the story on.
All of these and much more made this book a very well-paced and enjoyable read. My father and I await the sequel with anticipation as we are sure it will be just as good if not better.
I took this book with me while traveling for work because I knew I was going to be exhausted at the end of the day and needing something soft to ease me through the evenings in the hotel. Did not disappoint. Loved the use of modern technology (it's the little things), and the fill-out of the characters around the romance. Definitely recommend if romance is your go-to stress relief.
This love story pulled me right into Abby and Dean's world, and I love it there! I was hooked from the very start and didn't want it to end. This is a must-read romance, and you will have all the warm feelings. This was my first book by this author, and I'll be anxiously waiting to read more! It was easy to feel each character and be part of the story.
This was on my summer reading list and I devoured it while on vacation. I loved the characters and how the theater played an integral part in this love story. Can't what for book 2!
Soulmate, Stage Right by Bixby Jones invites readers into the drama-filled world of Abby Devlin, a passionate drama teacher with dreams of becoming a world-famous actress. While her stardom aspirations haven't quite materialized, she's made a mark at McMillan Playhouse, where she lands a role in her own production. The excitement turns to apprehension when she discovers her new leading man is a soap star.
Enter Dean Altman, a single dad and former soap star who's readjusted his life after a painful divorce. Returning to his hometown in Galveston, Texas, with his daughter, Preslie, Dean feels the pull to step back into the acting world, leading him to McMillan's stage and into Abby's orbit.
The sparks fly between Abby and Dean, but not the kind you'd expect on a stage. The sizzling tension spills off-stage, creating drama that mirrors the play they're working on. Yet, as they're forced to collaborate, the undeniable chemistry between them takes center stage. Just when they start to explore what might be brewing, an opportunity arises for Dean—one that could either solidify or shatter what they've discovered in each other.
The author crafts a romantic tale set against the backdrop of the theater, where love and drama intertwine. Soulmate, Stage Right promises a journey through passion, tension, and the complexities of love in the spotlight.
You guys, this book doesn't have enough support behind it that it should have. If you love to just sit down and absorb a Hallmark movie every now and then this book is for you.
It is written in dual point of view. Abby is a drama teacher and Dean is a former soap star now rocking the single dad life. They meet because they are going to be performing in a play together and they clash immediately.
Abby's had a lot of bad relationships. She doesn't really trust guys. She doesn't think she's up to certain standards for some guys. But she's an amazing teacher, actress, and great with kids. Oh and cats! That's a big theme in this book if you're a cat lover!
Dean is very standoffish, because he's been screwed over by his ex. And honestly he's just scraping by to figure out single dad life. Thankfully he has a very hands-on family who jumps in to help whenever needed.
There's a lot of inner dialogue in this book. Them processing things that are going on, their doubts, etc. I love getting to see them figure it out and that mental shift. The only critiques I have are sometimes that inner dialogue got a little repetitive. Which in real life it is like that probably, but it feels like too much reading it.
I say all that to say it ended well, but also with me wanting to see what's next for them! Patiently anticipating book 2.
What a entertaining story in Soulmate, Stage Right by Bixby Jones. This is the first book of Jones' that I've read, and I really like the writing style. It is a unique take on a contemporary romance and filled with just the right amount of heat and a lot of the adorable couple things, but it also adds some twists that make you think. It has comedy and connection between Dean and Abby, and the romance is definitely not forced. It's a very heart-warming story that gives encourages the cuddle up on the couch and open the book to read. This author brings the story to life. The characters had a lot of depth and were very realistic. It is a very well-written plot, and I enjoyed it. It’s one of those embraceable stories. If you love a good sweet and fulfilling romance, this book should be next on your list. I hope to read more books by this author. Soulmate, Stage Right is a definite recommendation by Amy's Bookshelf Reviews. I read this book to give my unbiased and honest review. Amy's Bookshelf Reviews recommends that anyone who reads this book, to also write a review.
Soulmate, Stage Right is an enemies-to-more romance by Bixby Jones. Abby Devlin is a drama teacher who has written a play that will be performed at McMillan Playhouse. Dalton Giles waltzes into town, and the theater director practically hands him the part of the leading male, as he had been a heartthrob on a popular soap opera. Dalton, who prefers to be called D, or by his real name, Dean, is out of practice, and he stumbles over his lines during his audition and first rehearsal. Abby who is certain that his cocky appearance reflects his personality, treats him with disdain as she assumes the female lead. After reading his biography online, Abby thinks she knows Dean well, but she misjudges him and is surprised to find out the reason he quit acting on television and moved. Abby falls hard for Dean’s dimples and caring personality, and Dean can’t resist her freckles, so the two of them begin seeing each other. Dalton is offered an opportunity, and the decision he makes could destroy his relationship with Abby. Bixby Jones provided a realistic situation that progressed naturally. The characters, especially Abby and Dean, behaved in the way I’d expected, given their backstories, and the novel moved along at a medium pace. The book was character-driven, and it led to some intensely emotional scenes. Jones illustrated a relationship that was flawed, but beautiful, and I was glad to read a story where the characters had to come to terms with their rash decisions and live with the repercussions. I recommend Soulmate, Stage Right to mature readers who enjoy romances and multidimensional characters.
This was my first read by Bixby and I just couldn't put it down. The two main characters had great insta-chemistry and I loved that part of it. But the insta-judgment that followed, along with the miscommunication and constant jumping to conclusions were beyond frustrating. HEA is guaranteed, but not until after a lot of heart-wrenching moments. Highly recommended! Can't wait for book 2.
Bixby Jones is one of those stories that quietly pulls you in and doesn’t let go. The writing feels effortless, and the characters have a way of getting under your skin in the best possible way. I loved the way the author balances heart, honesty, and voice throughout the book nothing ever feels forced, and every moment feels earned.
It’s the kind of story that makes you slow down and really appreciate the emotions on the page. Thoughtful, engaging, and beautifully done. A wonderful read.
