Power Over Me

Rate this book
Nuri VanZandt has struggled for most of her life. The product of a scheme gone wrong, she was left with a mother who felt she ruined her life. At the tender age of fourteen, she was propelled into the world of adulthood and taking care of herself by any means. As a result of past traumas and hardships, at twenty-eight, she is a struggling recovering alcoholic who is one step closer to falling headfirst into her old lifestyle. With the weight of the world on her shoulders, Nuri is ready to throw in the towel and end it all.

One night after a near slip, she meets Silas Baxter, a charming kindhearted man who helps her in a moment of need. For Silas, meeting Nuri was like meeting his soul in human form. His instant attraction to this mysterious, delicate woman propels him to pursue her in the most tender fashion. While Nuri rejects his advances, the more she engages with him, the more she comes to realize that her soul needs him more than she could ever imagine.

With life becoming overbearing and secrets from her past spilling from left and right, Silas is right there to pick up the pieces as Nuri finds herself breaking. Will she be able to lean on him for support or will the pressure become too much altogether?

Power Over Me was a beautiful story about recovery. At 26, Nuri has experienced more pain and trauma than most people will in their lifetime. She’s a recovering alcoholic just trying to keep her head above water but, life is a bitter side chic that won’t let her be. For every two steps forward, Nuri is pushed three steps back. From her landlord pressuring her for sex in exchange for rent to leaving her wallet at home while her car is on empty. Sis just couldn’t catch a break but, fate had other plans for Nuri and sent her a savior with dreads in her desperate time of need. Silas was everything! He’s the man we all hope and pray the Lord will put in our path. Silas had such a gentle soul and calming personality. The patience and compassion he showed Nuri was beyond commendable and he never asked for anything in return. Even with all of the rumors floating around about her, Silas never once judged her for her past. All he saw was a woman who needed him and he was more than willing to be there for her. Trust didn’t come easy for Nuri but, she allowed Silas to break down her walls and finally experience the love she so deserved. Ashley’s overbearing azz needed to have several seats and mind her damn business. I get being an overprotective big sister but, she took it too far. Ashley was hateful and rude for no reason. And, I have no words for Chasity. I’ve read plenty of books with ain’t shyt mamas but, that heffa wins the Oscar for the worst parent ever. That woman had no business giving birth to anybody. The shyt she allowed to happen to Nuri and turned a blind eye to was so unforgivable. Then, she had the audacity to lie about how Nuri left. Oh, but, she aired out all of Chasity’s dirty little secrets and put her on blast in front of her family. Chasity’s house of lies came tumbling down real quick. But, when her mama dropped that bomb, you could’ve bought me for less than a peso because I absolutely did NOT see that coming. Talk about a plot twist! In the end, Chasity got exactly what she deserved. I hope she gets her azz whooped every single day of the six years she was sentenced to. Power Over Me was a phenomenal read. I not only love seeing Nuri finally get her HEA but, I loved witnessing the growth and strength she displayed while regaining her confidence. Nuri VanZandt is a character you will definitely root for.

Nuri x Silas

This was soo very heavy. Nuri was just going THROUGH IT. Everything that could go wrong went wrong. Every time she got up, she got knocked right back down. If it's not one thing, it's the other. My heart broke for her. Sis doesn’t deal with hardship well, so her coping mechanism sucked. Then walks in the gentlelest soul with long locs and the thickest beard and a kiľler smile: Silas. He was kind, so protective of Nuri and loved so hard. He didn't care what he heard about Nuri. She was his. I wanted to be upset with Ashley, but sis was looking out for her brother. Cause nobody and I mean nobody coming for my little brother...even at his big age..I wanna fight him sometimes, but I'm allowed 😏. So I get her being protective, tho she was intense. But Ms. Brown delivered an amazing story about redemption and healing. It wasn't as "sexy" as her other works, but she still painted a naughty picture of you catch my drift 😜.
She's a beast, I tell ya!

Whew!! What a beautifully heartbreaking story this was! Nuri had such a traumatic experience during her childhood and that led to her adult life being equally traumatic. After the very person that was supposed to protect her, turns her back on Nuri, she spiraled into a deep pit of turmoil and despair. She took one step forward only to get knocked back 20. No matter how hard she fought she could not get out of the quicksand known as her life. When she had seemingly hit rock bottom, Silas MF Baxter swoops in like the knight in shining armor that he was. This man was caring, compassionate and provided Nuri with a loving safe space to unravel and become whole again. The things Nuri experienced would cause many to crumble however with her small yet mighty circle of support she rose from the ashes. Ashley had all of the audacity in this book. I get wanting to protect those you love but she went way too far! Nuri definitely gathered her at the seams though. Charity and Patrick got what the deserved and I’m happy healing was experienced for everyone!

Powerful Story

This story really pulled at my heartstrings….Poor Nuri in her 26 years had a lifetime of trauma….She really didn’t have any support outside of her supervisor at her job until she met Silas….Silas was definitely a whole vibe from the very beginning of the story when he was introduced. He was able to finally crack Nuri’s suit of armor and she allowed him in, which added to her support system. It took a lot, but ultimately he was able to encourage and assist Nuri’s life change.

A love built to last

This was not only a beautiful love story but a beautiful story about recovery. I love seeing people with flaws depicted in Romance, I love when they are able to see their worth and receive the love they deserve. Silas was AMAZING, he was everything! The way he supported Nuri, how he grew with her every step of the way. He would meet her wherever she was at then walk beside as she healed and moved on. Which was great to see because sometimes when you’re healing, people have a hard time letting go of the broken version on you.

Nuri was a Queen💜
Learning to love and trust people when independence is your trauma response isn’t an easy task, I’m happy the Author took her time telling this story. I also enjoyed seeing Nuri actively seek her healing, find her strength and stand on her own, that aspect made their love even better. I was rooting for her to win like I knew her🤣. I recommend reading this book (it has TWs so be mindful) and I’m about to binge the Author’s whole catalog because I enjoy the way she writes.

Emotional

I enjoyed this heartfelt story through its ups and downs, the good and the ugly. Nuri overcame and thankful for Silas for speaking life into her existence. He was the man! I cried during several parts of this book but I'm overjoyed with the ending. This needs to be a movie. Job well done!

Power restored!!!

I enjoyed reading about Nuri and Silas. Nuria was a woman who allowed her past and pain to have drain her of her power and take possession. Silas was the man who came in and reminded her of her power over her pain and circumstance. Even though this story visits the many lows, the highs were well worth the wait.

Great story

This author writes such a great story. I love how Nuri was trying to better her life. Silas was the missing piece to Nuri’s puzzle. I loved the relationship between Nuri and Silas, they brought out the best in each other.

Powerful...

Mrs. Brown just keeps them coming, this work of art is so powerful and deep. The issues that this book touches on will tap on your soul. I was so invested in Nuri's life and story. I was just rooting for her to be totally healed from page one. Some people may not know or be educated on it, but alcohol is a drug, meaning its an addiction that has to be broken. Nuri was working diligently to break that addiction but life just kept throwing blows. She just endured so much, but her strength was unmatched. Although, she did not realize just how strong she was. At the point, when I thought Nuri's life was looking up where she and Silas would ride off into the sunset a few more speed bumps rise. The main bump being her mother. In my eyes, she was unfit as anyone parent. I actually liked the cards that were dealt to her. She deserved every last one of them.

This is a spectacular read, that will touch you all the way in your soul. Ms. Nuri lives through so much, but made it. It is inspirational to read how she discovered her "purpose" in life. It is also encouraging how she literally coined "started from the bottom and now she is here," in this book. I highly recommend this book, you will enjoy it. Grab a box of Kleenex, possibly your timbs and indulge. I know I haven't mentioned or say a lot about Silas, but he is in my top five for a Book Bae. He is what 99.9% of women are praying 🙏 for in a spouse. He is a successful, supportive, mature, caring and handsome man. The moment he educated himself on alcoholism he won me over.

P.S. It's one thing to be overprotective, but it's another to be stepping over your boundaries. I feel like Silas's sister, Ashley, was doing exactly this.

wow…

This was a lot! But in a really important and healing way. The healing bit was a little rushed given how much time we spent in the mires of the trauma but it was also pretty comprehensive and didn’t minimize the effort in addition to “the healing power of love™️ needed for true healing.

Featuring Nuri, a recovering alcoholic at the end of her tether, and Silas the almost too good to be true handyman who randomly comes to her rescue, this book takes us through a lot of trauma with substance abuse, child abuse, suicide ideation- the works. I loved Silas and Nuri’s relationship and the fact that she was able to get on her own healing journey. If there was an issue with this, it’s the fact that Silas felt a little underdeveloped as a character for me. It was hard to figure out what he was really about and Nuri had so much going on, there was no room for him to have nuance as a character. All the dramatic revelations that came through in the last quarter of the book, shook me completely! This was a super emotional but overall well-executed read!

KIMBERLY! From the first few pages, you had me wanting to give Nuri and hug, while reaching in my purse to help her out! I feel so emotional, that I can hardly put into words what is going on in my head! Nuri! This poor thing went through it! But, survivor is her middle name! She continued to press on, as the roadblocks continued to fall in her way; she persevered! Silas! This man has to be an angel! The patience, caring, and compassion that he showed a stranger tells what a genuine soul he is! Being around Nuri he could see the pain in her eyes, and wanted to protect her. When all was revealed, I could just not believe that woman that birthed Nuri! If ain't ish mother was a person, it was Chasity! I loved seeing the growth and strength that Nuri displayed, as she regained her confidence and got her power back! This was such a moving read! Great job! 👍👍👍

Overpowering Love

This was a good one! There was trauma, tragedy, ruthless behavior, crisis, crying,, hopelessness, threats and bouts of suicide but the overwhelming power of love prevailed to the end. Amazing story of a woman who endured so much aged this wonderful man who felt a connection and wanted to know her! Love doesn't care who you are it can sometimes infect your mind and heart when you least expect it. Unimaginable love prevailed giving a newness of life for the innocence taken from a child who bore a child, without the protection of a trifling no good mother and her sexual abusive man. Love is strong, powerful, resilient and can change the world and this story was hot disappointing. Kimberly Brown did each amazing job.

Great Story

Ms. Brown did her GOODT writing with this one! Hats off to her, because I felt immersed in Nuri's mental. I felt her desperation, her dispair, her sadness, it was all palpable and made for hard reading at times as my heart literally ached for her. Silas was the perfect partner to Nuri with his strong, quiet support. I love that he handled Nuri with care from the very beginning and he allowed her space and grace to heal and grow strong. Nuri's life journey was rough and her mama...just no words. I did love her family embracing her once they reconnected. This was a beautiful, passionate story of love, healing and restoration. Brava, Ms. Brown!👏🏾 5 ⭐️ Stars!

Man this book was intense. I cried real tears for my girl Nuri because life truly was unfair to her. And Silas….a true saint. The way this man showed up for her, encouraged her, prayed for her, & walked beside her as she healed. He led with compassion, understanding, and patience. He was amazing. And even though Nuri was at her lowest, she had such a quiet strength that allowed her to not only endure all that she had gone through but she truly overcame it all. I love that the author allowed us to see her growth and development on her healing journey. Also it’s really on sight for women who don’t protect their children. Because WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU?!?

Emotional roller coaster

This book took me on an emotional roller coaster. I felt for Nuri so much in this book. She’s been through a lot starting at a young age. Silas gave this book a breathe of fresh air. He is just an all around amazing man. Now, his sister (Ashley) is just a buzz killer. I wanted to hit her myself. This book takes you on a emotional roller coaster but it is such a good read. Ms. Brown you did it again! This book was 🔥🔥

Very deep book

I loved Nuri. She was a tortured yet pure soul. Life catapulted lemons her way yet she persevered. Addiction is an everyday battle and support means everything. I loved Silas and his strength that was displayed most by also being vulnerable. He showed and proved. There are too many real live stories like Nuris where children are voiceless and subjected to trauma. This was a deep book and I loved the ending.

Thank You

This story was everything. Everything about it was perfect. The pacing. The character development. The hurt and trauma was shared with just enough truth, depth, and compassion. Nuri was a leading lady in every way. She was a victim, a beast, mom, and a survivor. Silas was loving, gentle, patient, and of course - intense.

I did shed tears of sadness for Nuri, but I was more than glad for the ones that came with their HEA.

Great read!

Nuri and Silas!!!

Nouri and Silas is truly a dream come true. This story rips your heart out for a child. It creates a protective barrier for all the mother's out here. It reminds us that strength comes from within but you sometimes have to fight for it. The stranger that lended a helping hand turns out to be God's greatest gift of rescue mission. From the beginning to the end this story grabs you and you better hold on tight to finish it.

What can’t you survive with the right friends by your side? Nuri survived molestation, teenage pregnancy, abandonment, alcoholism, harsh judgment and mental illness . The author wrote in a manner that we experienced it all . Silas is my new book bae . He was an Angel on earth and I’m glad she finally leaned on him . Justice for her daughter and herself was the happening ending oh and that ring .

I made the mistake of trying to read this book at work. Needless to say...I didn't get any work done. Man, this book was sssooo good! I'm still sniffing and wiping my nose...damn you Kimberly Brown.
From the moment you meet Nuri, you want to help her, fight for her. She got the Prince we all dream about in Silas (swoon, swoon, swoon). Nobody's deserved a better "happily ever after" than Nuri.

Wow! for less than 200 pages this book has giving me so much. Nuri and Silas are beautiful. The pain and the love of Nuri was hard to read but a great story. Kimberly Browns main male characters are amazing I love the way she write them. I’ve only read two of her books but she’s starting to become one of my top 10 favorite authors.

Nuri and Silas

The amount of heartbreak Nuri experienced made her coping mechanism necessary and understandable. It was great for justice to be served and lives restored. Silas was the absolute Godsend. His persistence and perseverance was what Nuri needed to propel her into her beautiful and bright future.

A realistic love story

The love story between Silas and Nuri was written so realistically. Nuri was a flawed individual dealing with some real life issues. Silas came at the right moment and breathed light into her when she needed it the most. I want to give her a huge hug. Beautifully written.

Good Read

Very good book and well written. I do suggest that you take the disclaimer at the beginnings of the book very seriously. Although some of the topics in this book where not necessarily triggers for me it did make me very emotional where as it usually takes me less than a day to read a book, it took me longer because I had to take breaks to calm my thoughts. I don't usually write a review just rate books I read but I want people to seriously take heed to the disclaimer the author so graciously offered. If the disclaimer does not cause triggers and your good with the subject matter please read this book it will be well worth it. Happy Readings All.
