One of Marshall's best written episodes in the madcap Yellowthread Street detective series.

I'm not sure what else I can say about the Yellowthread Street novels. Of course, there are greater and lesser ones, that is, five-star and four-star ones. If you haven't read one, read one. And if you don't care for it, I'm not sure what to tell you. So much of the world, and life, is encapsulated in these stories: the striving underclass, the rich, the sacred history of the Chinese, the fading glory of the British Empire, childhood, disappointing adulthood, friendship and love.
