Was Scylla always a feared sea-monster, or was she a victim of jealousy?
What had summoned the beast of Itsumade into the skies? For how long would it reign in terror?
Why is Anansi one of the most popular myths across Africa?
We have all been exposed to a mythological beast in one form or another. Whether it is Dwayne ‘the Rock’ Johnson playing an oversized scorpion man in The Mummy Returns and The Scorpion King, or the character of Anansi in Neil Gaiman’s American Gods; these magical creatures have a deep connection to the mythologies and folktales of ancient cultures.
Where did they come from? What relevance do they serve in mythology? Why are some so obscure, while others become pop-culture enigmas? Get the answer to these questions, and learn about beasts from different world cultures.
Folklorist Zayden Stone dives deep into the stories of these magical beasts and provides a fictional anecdote, a retelling of the original myths, an analysis of the symbolism and relevance of the creatures, and then pairs it with some beautiful black and white illustrations reimagined by artist Herdhian. In the second volume of the Mythical Creatures and Mythological Beasts book, the illustrated guide takes you through six themes that have been specifically chosen since they are consistent across cultures. The categories include:
arthropods for insects, crustaceans, and arachnids; avian for birds; canines for wolves and dogs; serpents for snakes and dragons; ungulates for hooved animals like horses and cows; and aquatic for water dwelling beasts. Presenting the creatures in categories makes it easier to see what the beasts have in common. You will find some overlapping themes across ancient cultures that point to universal ideas in how humans perceive the world.
If you have a love for the myths and want to learn about the unique beasts that dwell within them, this book is a great way to do it. Not only will you learn about ones you may have never heard of, but you will also be able to draw parallels between cultures and see how they interpreted their surroundings through stories of mythical creatures and magical beasts.
If you haven’t already, then don’t forget to check out the first volume of Mythical Creatures and Mythological Beasts by Zayden Stone.
Zayden Stone is a self proclaimed folklorist. As a child, he was swallowed up by the world of mythology. He let the stories of ancient cultures transport him to an imaginary worlds. He would often re-imagine these stories. It has been a life long dream of Zayden’s to combine all the stories he was told about into comprehensive books for others. His books are an ode to his own childhood and fascination for ancient tales, and dedicates his work to the ever curious souls who love to learn about folktales and myths from ancient cultures.
After reading volume 1, I had to pick up the next one. Just like in the first volume it is an illustrated guide that is divided into really short chapters regarding each individual creature. There is a short popular story at the start of every chapter for better understanding of the origin of the creature. It is a standalone book which can be read without reading the previous one.
Most of the creatures originate from Norse, Greek, Hindu, Aztec, Finnish, Chinese mythology or Japanese, Babylonian, African, Slavic, Persian, Inuit, Filipino, Scottish, European, Melanesian folklores.
The author has done amazing research and complied different versions of the original and how they came to be. Anyone who loves to read about mythologies or folklores, then this book is for you. The one thing I really loved about both the volumes is how the author is not imposing any tale on the reader, he leaves it on the reader to believe it or not.
Every fantasy & mythology genre lover comes across several magical creatures & these creatures shape the entire story–at times helping the protagonist, at times being their enemies. But how well do we know their origin stories?
Zayden Stone in his 2nd vol. of 'Mythical Creatures & Magical Beasts' continues his saga of telling the readers the stories of the mythical creatures who we come across in folklores, myths & legends.
The book is divided into 6 sections–Arthropoda, The Ancient Aviary, Cryptic Canines, The Eternal Hiss, The Unusual Ungulates, Aquatic Beasts.
Each section covers 5-7 animals from diverse folklores & mythology–Greek, Persian, Finnish, African, South-African, Japanese, Slavic, European, Melanesian to name a few.
Each tale begins with a brief popular tale followed by the description of the animal, how their legends came into existence & if their stories have experienced change over the time.
This book is rich in information & beautiful illustration sketched by Herdhian gives an insight to the creatures we'll be visualising.
I loved the diversity of the folklores covered in this vol. The 1st vol. had mention of animals I've already heard of but this volume digs further into realms left unexplored.
While reading this book I had thisconstant nagging of how legends portray women as selfish & vile; and the only time they're shown any respect is when they show their motherly instinct. And I was so happy to see Stone addressing this issue in the conclusion. We get the whole picture of the ideas society wanted to perpetuate through these tales & though morally designes they have their own flaws.
If you are looking for reading something different & have an interest in knowing about these beasts you should definitely pick this up. This can be easily read as a standalone.
I have always been fascinated with mythological beings and stories of gods. I grew up listening to stories of Hindu mythologies and later I developed a penchant for greek mythology. This book was a perfect read for me. It covered stories and creatures from so different mythology from Slavic to Japanese, Greek to Finnish, Hindu to Persian. The backstory of all the creatures with their ties to the real world has been explained wonderfully. The different legends and how the stories have been modified as the years went by was dealt carefully. The simple language used to write this book is appreciated.
The Mythical Creatures and Magical Beasts Volume 2
This book talks about a lot of mythical creatures (as the title suggests). For every creature, we have a little anecdote and then a brief description. The language is very simple and smooth. There are a few themes too, that this book covers. The author has clearly researched a lot about these. The illustrations add to the beauty of the whole book.
Mythology has always fascinated me. And learning about so many creatures was something that baffled my mind! Would definitely recommend checking out both parts of this book!
Mythical Creatures and Magical Beasts: An Illustrated Book of Monsters from Timeless Folktales, Folklore and Mythology: Volume 2 (Legendary Lores) Kindle Edition By ZAYDEN STONE.
Do you believe in mythology? Do you like reading folklore and stories that make you curious and provide answers to all your questions and resolve all your mysteries? I always had an avid interest in knowing the truth behind the legends or the stories our old generations are aware of. Browsing through the internet, I have tried to read about mythical creatures. This book is one place to find answers to all those curious questions. The narration keeps you engrossed. This book is divided into six different sections. Arthropoda, An Ancient Aviary, Cryptic Canines, The Eternal Hiss, Unusual Ungulates, and Aquatic beasts. My favorite story was - Uchchaihshrava, written during the famous Samudra Manthan between the Devas and the Asuras. I loved the poetry at the start. "Something began to rise out of the foam, but it was not the elixir. It was a horse as white as the purest milk and as radiant as the moon. First, one hand appeared, then another, until there were seven..." The poetry gives you a clear picture of what was happening during the Amrit Manthan. Overall, this book keeps you captivated until the end and gives you a canvas to imagine and ponder. The writing style is engaging and keeps you hooked on the story. The poetry at the start of every chapter is a treat to read, and I loved reading all of them. All the stories have been thoroughly researched. You can check the reference links at the end of the book. I applaud the author for putting together such a remarkable book. This book can be read again as it lets you live in the imagination of another world altogether. A must-read.
We've learned about a variety of mythological creatures through fantasy books, folklore, mythology, and a variety of other sources. But have you ever thought about the creatures' origins and backstories? What significance do they play in mythology? Why are some characters so unknown, while others have become pop cultural puzzles?
Folklorist Zayden Stone offers you a book in which you can delve into the stories of these mystical monsters. The book is organised into six sections in total: • Anthropods- For insects, crustaceans and arachnids • Avian - For Birds • Canines - For wolves and dogs • Serpents - For snakes and dragons • Ungulates - For hooved animals like horses and cows • Aquatic - For water dwelling beasts
The main thing I liked about this book was that the magical creatures discussed inside weren't just creatures from Harry Potter, popular fantasy shows, or Western mythology; the author did his best to maintain diversity by including tales from Norse, Greek, Hindu, Chinese, Slavic, African, and other cultures from around the world.
To be honest, I'm not a huge fan of mythology, so I was a little hesitant to pick this book up, but I'd always been curious to learn more about mythical creatures I'd heard about. So, if you're interested in mythology or want to learn more about monsters you've seen on TV or in novels, you should absolutely pick up this book. There are also illustrations in the book that do a wonderful job of keeping the reader interested.
I have never read something like this ever but, I always want to read folklore or mythology. I always searched for a book that could match the theme and was never fortunate enough to find everything under one book. This book made me feel like going down ages and understanding the diversity of the mythological tales that had more supernatural entities. I remembered my sister learning about some and telling the stories each night. From then, I was finding a book where I can find innumerable tales that would go on and on. Each story had an enticing illustration. The whole vibe of the tales was felt from the beginning itself. I loved every story and would definitely have a tough time selecting any favourite. The beautiful thing was that it also gives the source of the story. There is various folklore originating from China, Aztec, Greek, India too. It has six different sections and each section is written with many short chapters. The monsters that were mentioned in the book were spooky too and the whole winter vibe was set. The book was written comprehensively and effortlessly written for the readers to understand. I would definitely love to read the book one more time and each day a new tale.
As a child we all loved folk tales. So, when I got a book where all the tales of myths and folks are brought under one roof, it brought back my childhood. Animals being the major protagonists of these tales, these mythical creatures and mystical beasts have always hold an important place in every culture throughout the world. And the author has brilliantly accumulated the whole world together in the second part of this series.
The thorough research from the author's part is clearly visible as we proceed from arthropoda to cryptic canines from the the all-time hiss of mythical snakes to the unusual ungulates ending with a bunch of acquatic beasts. The author has portrayed air, water and land creatures through his well-penned book.
Written in a lucid language with illustrations of every creature described, this book narrates story related to every creature, their origin and their ends, sometimes different ends. So my dear friends, if you are someone who is interested in mythologies and folktales and if you find yourself getting sucked into the world of myths and mystic; this book is apt for your bookshelf.
Mythical Creatures and Magical Beasts, Legendary Lores is the second book of Zayden Stone which is full of ancient mythological findings on various creatures. It’s a well written and the author never failed to amaze me in bringing on my imagination of the wile stories and based on the different mythologies in the world.
The book is structured into six sections and each of them details about the unique form and origin of the creatures derived from various mythologies starting from Japan and transcending to China, Babylon, India West Africa and so on. After reading about each of them, it makes the reader to understand that there are more tales beyond what is prominently mentioned in this book. This really inspired me and made me to research more on these creatures, perceive them better and to find their possible connections that are deep routed into the world’s mythology.
The amount of research put to bringing this book is truly commendable and author’s imagination never ceased to amaze me. I truly enjoyed reading this book, and I’m sure this is one kind of book that would rarely bore any reader.
Mythical creatures and Magical beasts is a book based on mythological and magical beasts.
This book generally talks about several mythical creatures of different time periods across the whole world like Persian, Japanese and many more.
Furthermore, this book has been divided into six different sections, namely Arthropoda, Aquatic beasts, An Ancient Aviary, Cryptic Canines, The Eternal Hiss and Unusual Ungulates. And each section then discusses unique supernatural spirits.
Each and every character or you can say a spirit is provided with their history starting with their origin, traditions and many other interesting facts with some unique illustrations.
Although all the characters were unique and amazing, the characters which I found interesting would be Ajatar, Strix and Huma.
The book is written in lucid language and the writing style is simple yet attractive. The inclusion of illustrations made the book more intriguing and addictive. Also a big kudos to the author, for well researching about everything written in the book.
Highly recommended to readers who are into the mythical retelling genre.
✓This is an illustrated book on monsters and timeless folktales, folklore and mythology. The first thing which I would like to say is that I absolutely loved it. I have always been interested in the concept of mythological creatures and folklore and have read a few books on this topic. This one has turned to be one of my most favorites on this topic. This is volume 2 , however, you can read this without reading volume 1. The book has been divided into six sections, each having around six chapters. Each chapter focuses on different mythological creature or folklore. I loved how the author has segregated everything in different sections, it makes things easier to understand. Also, the efforts of the author is clearly visible as you can understand by reading, how well the research work has been done. The origin of the folklore has also been clearly mentioned. The illustrations are excellent. The language is lucid. Honestly, I absolutely loved it. Highly recommended! Please do give this a try!
The book "Mythical Creatures and Magical Beasts" is written by Zayden Stone. This is volume second that I am writing review of, and no doubt this one is as suberb as the earlier one. Starting from the book cover, it's mind blowing, I liked it a lot.
A good read for mythological readers, several stories of original myths have been told in this book, the commonness among them all, that kept them together. This book has been divided into several sections, talking about different creatures and actions that they do, life they live. A wide perspective of imagination is showed through this book. I liked the way author has took extra angle to present things, his way of narration is unique and lovely, I found this book pretty interesting and engaging. I would recommend this to others as well.
This book, the second volume in the legendary lores series, is a mine of knowledge about mythical creatures. If you know me, you know how much I love mythology. And this book was a delight to read! The book is divided into 6 parts, each part having detailed information about various mythological creatures and stories about them, their origins and beautiful illustrations.
The book kept me hooked from the first story of Jorogumo till the last one about Rusalka. The illustrations are so beautiful and gives us an idea about how the mythical creature that is written about looks like. The writing is simple, lucid and engaging.
It was like reading a science book with much less official terms. I liked the parts in which the book is divided based on the type of the creature. The best thing I liked about the book was the translated story part from other books, it was thrilling.
✳️Whenever we read a fantasy story or see a movie, we may see some beasts or mythical creatures playing a huge role in it. For instance Scorpion Man, Sirens, Dragons.. Have you ever wondered where these creatures came from? What makes them myths? What are their origin stories? Why are some of these creatures considered harbingers of death while others are considered bearers of fortune? If you are interested in knowing these mythical tales, then Zayden Stone's 'Mythical Creatures and Magical Beasts' is the book for you. There are currently two volumes in this series; and this review is about the second part of this installment.✳️
🔹"At the very back of his mind was a warning: this was the Sirin, don’t follow it to your death."🔹
✳️This book is divided into six sections namely Arthropoda, An ancient Aviary (for bird like beasts), Cryptic Canines, The Eternal Hiss, The Unusual Ungulates and Aquatic beast like in the first volume. Each of these section covers some unique types of supernatural beasts and apart from the stories and myths, there are also illustrations of these mythical creatures.✳️
✳️Thank goodness I read this book. The Author has done an extensive research on these beings and should be greatly appreciated for his hard work. He wrote this book in a clear, easy-to-read language. What made this book more interesting for me were the illustrations. They were perfectly laid out and beautifully sketched. And the stories written after the illustrations (in a different font) were very intriguing and this will have all the readers hooked up to the book. There were also a few mythical creatures from tales told in my region that is depicted in this book, and it made me more enthralled. This book can be read as you see fit. There is no need to stick to the correct order of chapters. ✳️
✳️A compendium of different mythical creatures under a single book; this is a dream come true for all fantasy lovers. And I strongly recommend this book if you have a great interest in Mythology.✳️

For each and every single character that has been presented in the book, the author has provided us with their origin and also an illustration to help the readers concot an image in our mind when we are reading about them.
Even though all of them were unique and distinct in their own especial way, the two characters which I found the most fascinating amongst all of the mentioned lot would be that of Timingila and Ajatar.
Reading about the magical and mythical creatures from this book is definitely, and rather unquestionably, bound to help us take a break from reality and wonder about all the seemingly different dimensions.
A thorough research has been done by the author to put forth this book and all his efforts to piece together everything are really applaud worthy. Hence I am going to give this book FIVE MYTHICAL STARS ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
"The ocean of milk was being churned, and it was finally starting to separate. Indra and the other gods looked out eagerly for any objects that might be forming in the froth. The item they were waiting for was an elixir to restore the strength and immortality of the gods. Something began to rise out of the foam, but it was not the elixir. It was a horse as white as the purest milk and as radiant as the moon. First, one head appeared, then another, until there were seven."
I really enjoyed reading Mythical creatures and Magical Beast Vol. 1, and Vol.2 continues to gain my appreciation. As I love anything which is related to mythical creatures and fiction, I really enjoyed reading both the books.
From 'Uchchaihshrava' From Hindu Mythology to 'Huma' from Persian folklore, this book covers a variety of creatures. Every creature is well developed and researched. I firmly believe that there were dragons yes I know what you are saying but what if some dinosaurs lived and mutated gators are living descendents of dinosaurs. Many myths have a bases of truth to them that why it is so great to read a book like this. It makes you wonder and think. Great work this one is as good as the first book I am so glad I have both in my library.
Author name - Zayden Stone Language - English Pages - 202 Genre - Mythology and culture
In the introduction, the author states - at the heart of every myth, folktale or legend is excellent story telling. This is something that I completely agree with. The reason a reader is fascinated with mythology is not just about the characters or their supernatural elements, but the way they are all moulded into an interesting story.
The author further elaborates the basic difference between Myths, legends and folklore, with appropriate examples.
In the book, the author has compiled the stories of all myths, legends and folklore from all cultures and traditions across the globe. He has described the stories as told by the common folk tales and also the different versions of the same story. He has tried the describe the essence of the stories with an explanation as to why that particular story has been told or what moral it gives. The book is very well researched, and gives an in depth analysis of different forms of these mythological creatures, their divine or humane connections and the supernatural powers they supposedly possess. The author has also pointed out some overlap in the creatures across different cultures or origins.
The book is divided into six broad sections - Arthropoda, Ancient Aviary, cryptic canines, the eternal hiss, the unusual ungulates and aquatic beast - each depicting a separate category of animals and creatures and the stories relating to those. The stories cover everything, all the interesting tales from Greek mythology, Hindu mythology, Islamic culture, Inuit mythology, Japanese legends and so on and so forth.
My favourite was the story of Arachne and Athena, and how, to teach Arachne a lesson in modesty and humility, Athena challenges her to an all encompassing weaving competition.
The language is nice and simple. The book is captivating and leaves the reader fascinated as well as satiated.
The illustrations are well thought of and beautifully created. The cover page is attractive.
An ode to the imagination of people and the wild stories their minds tell. - Zayden Stone. . . MYTHICAL CREATURES AND MAGICAL BEASTS - an illustrated book of monsters from timeless folktales, folklore and mythology.

One of my favorite book 📖
❄️This is a kind of book where the title explains the whole content which is tremendous.
The pictures of the characters of the stories not only help in understanding and reading the stories but also make them more thrilling and exciting .
❄️The book has a beautiful cover page and monochrome color illustrations by artist Herdhian ,make it more captivating. That mythology is often a perspective or a version of the truth .
❄️I remembered my elder sister learning some and telling these types of stories each night but most of them were different . Some are very new for me.
❄️Most of the Story's creatures are from Norse ,Greek,Hindu , Chinese,Japanese,African and Melanesian,Babylonian Folklore.
❄️The book is mainly divided into six sections and every section is divided into different types. so the number of chapters is 35. At the start of every chapter better understanding of the origin appearances , consequences and which timeline they were seen in and what role they played .
Their names are described by creatures' appearances .The description of every monster in the book is spine - chilling and they create their Aura.
❄️The author ZYDEN STONE has done amazing research and compiled everything in one book And he also gave references to the end of the book how they came to be . I loved to read every story and would definitely have a tough time choosing my favorite one.

🧜🏼♂️Title- Mythical Creatures and Magical Beasts volume 2
🧜🏼♂️Author - Zayden Stone
🧜🏼♂️Genre- Fiction
🧜🏼♂️This book contains six sections and each section contain beautiful chapters. Here I have mentioned a few of them, which I liked the most. The following are:
🧜🏼♂️The Jorōgumo is one of the most dangerous shapeshifters in Japanese mythology.
🧜🏼♂️Scorpion Man -They symbolize resolute defence and security for royalty and laypeople alike. Created to be frightening members of a monster army, they are fearsome guardians and protectors.
🧜🏼♂️ Anansi- Anansi is usually depicted as a black spider with a cheeky anthropomorphized face. Rather than his appearance, it is his character that is important to the many tales he features in.
🧜🏼♂️ Itsumade- Itsumade is a legendary monster with a jigsaw of body parts. It has a human face but with a bird-like beak lined with sharp and jagged teeth and a reptilian body akin to a dragon, with clawed talons and enormous wings with a span of almost five meters. It is a striking and terrifying figure who appears in the sky only at night. According to Japanese legend, the Itsumade is drawn toward the torment of deceased victims of terrible or violent circumstances
🧜🏼♂️ The Book of Mythical creature by Zayden Stone was filled with so many mythical characters from all over the world. The writing was great. Some creatures had longer descriptions than others. I liked that the book had dedicated pages to all the creatures, etc. It was an exciting read.
🧜🏼♂️ It's not a lengthy book and takes you to the imaginary world.
🧜🏼♂️Description of each character beautifully jotted down. furthermore, you will see the picture of all the creatures from the beginning
It was a fantastic experience to read this book. This book is all for knowing more about the monsters mentioned in popular culture. Not the boring ones, but the animals like Dwayne Johnson's Oversized scorpion guy in "Mummy Returns" or Neil Gaiman's Anansi in American Gods. This book goes to great length regarding their significance in folklore, as well as how and where they originated.
This book is just as nicely organized and divided as Volume 1, and it has nothing to do with Part 1. Arthropoda, Canines, Aviary, Hiss, Unusual Ungulates, and Aquatic Beasts are the six parts of the book.
Each one tells the narrative of 5-7 distinct monsters or creatures from many mythologies, including Greek, Egyptian, African, Japanese, European, and other mythologies. Each one begins with a popular story that is followed by an in-depth analysis.
The magical creatures mentioned inside weren't only creatures from Harry Potter, popular fantasy programs, or Western mythology; the author made his best to retain variety by integrating tales from Norse, Greek, Hindu, Chinese, Slavic, African, and other civilizations from throughout the world.
To be honest, I'm a great mythology buff, so I was excited to read this book, but I'd always wanted to discover more about mythological creatures I'd heard about. So, whether you're interested in mythology or want to understand more about creatures you've seen on TV or in books, this is a must-read. The book also has drawings that do a fantastic job of keeping the reader engaged.
The wording is clear, and the illustrations are fantastic. If you prefer Harry Potter, The Hobbit, or mythical fiction in general, you will undoubtedly enjoy this one as well, since it is both instructive and fun.
"An ode to the imagination of people and the wild stories their minds tell." . 🕸️Mythical Creatures and Magical Beasts written by Zayden Stone is a book on mythological creatures. . 🕸️ Inspired by the childhood stories of mythologies, Zayden has curated this illustrated book about the mythological creatures. . 🕸️Stone describes himself as a self-proclaimed folklorist. . 🕸️The book has made me realise the importance of myths and folklores and the difference between them. Stone describes them as the ' sources for creating a sense of community through campfire stories.' 'Myths are sacred whereas folklores are fictional tales' as mentioned in the book. . 🕸️It is divided into six sections- Arthropoda, An Ancient Aviary, Cryptic Canines, The Eternal Hiss, The Unusual Ungulates and Aquatic Beasts. These sections are filled with mythological creatures that we've never heard of. . 🕸️What I liked about the book: - The illustrations are appealingly presented. -This book talks about myths from around the world. -It is a well researched work, with supporting evidences and that's what makes it credible. -Interesting excerpts from books have been reported in the book. -The language is pretty easy to understand. . 🕸️Towards the end of the book, the author talks about how most of the myths have been written by men and they reflect the patriarchal set-up in the societies and how the role female goddesses in myths have often been restricted to marriage and raising children. . 🕸️This book would be a good fit for the people who are just starting with myths and it's also suitable for beginners.
In modern times, Zilant holding a Tatarstan tulip forms the heart of the logo for the Special Olympics World Winter Games 2022,emblematic of friendship, hospitality and joy. From a fierce adversary to a popular emblem, Zilant has come to be regarded with fondness and represents guardianship and hospitality. -Zayden Stone
'Mythical Creatures And Magical Beasts Volume 2' is a non-fiction book giving you a glimpse of 35 popular monsters. The author has carefully selected humanoids or what we would call supernatural creatures known to mankind through timeless folktales, folklore and mythology. Most of the creatures originate from Norse, Greek, Hindu, Aztec, Finnish, Chinese mythology or Japanese, Babylonian, African, Slavic, Persian, Inuit, Filipino, Scottish, European, Melanesian folklores.
It's often noticed that mystical creatures are part of storytelling all around the world either to convey morals or to bring glory to legendary heroes and God's but the narrative varies due to religious influence and migration of people. The author has done amazing research and compiled different versions to the original. He brings to light how patriarchal mindset influences the demonization and evil labelling of female mythical creatures. #readingfatima
If you love reading about supernatural creatures, demons, mythology then this book is for you. There is an illustration of every demon at the start of the chapter with a brief rose from the popular stories. The author leaves it up-to you to believe or not believe in the stories. He also pushes scientific reasoning on some parts without disturbing the lore.
“Which stories would have had a higher chance of continued telling and retellings over generations - a story about a single-headed, two-handed man that had to fight lions and tigers and bears, or the story of a demi-God with herculean strength battling a multi-headed sea serpent and a mammoth-sized boar?” The author says this in his book and one cannot disagree with what he says here, coz it’s so damn true. If you have watched the show Teen Wolf, then you might have come across this book called BEASTIARY in it. It’s a collection of all supernatural entities in that TV show. Similarly, this book is a collection of all the magical, folklore entities we may have across in different Mythlogical stories. I came across creatures from various mythologies like Japanese, Norse, Greek, Persian, Indian, and, these are just a few of the many listed in the book. Each chapter starts with a scary story of the creature's encounter and then proceeds to explain its existence or how it came to be. I loved how the author went to into great detail on these chapters. It shows how much research he had done. I am a big fan of the Percy Jackson series by Rick Riordan and the other mythological fantasies he has written. Some of the characters I came across in this book had made their appearance in those series but never went into much detail. Here I learned a lot about them.
If you, like me, are a mythological addict, this book and the first volume are a must in your library.
In india The creatures is being worshipped from years and years with the gods. Mouse being the bahana of ganesha and ox of Shiva, Nagas also. Owl of Laxmi and many more tales we have heard from childhood where creatires also worshipped with same respect. But not only in india but in various parts of world the creatures are being prayed. This book has covered most of japan and china mythical creatures and beasts. The research behind the book is reflecting from the first page of the book. I have read the first part and totally mesmerized by the history behind the folklores and The second part is much more interesting than the first one. There are creatures named sirin, huma, simurgh, adlet and many more. The illustrations of the creatures are different as it's a mix of human face and the body part is of creatures which looks terrific and horrifying and the stories behind their origin is more horrifying. Every name has it's own story which intrigued me till the last to read it. It looks like a big book but it's not as it has lots of illustrations which gives this book a beautiful touch of reading it. A different read because the stories behind the origin is also terrible. The pictures are so different and unique. Hats off to Author as this book shows a lots of behind work. It's mot easy to find the history of the creatures and portray everything in such a way. A must read if you want to read something different.
This book, like the first volume, goes through six. Sections, each covering a unique type of supernatural beast. The author has penned down unique and different topics of mythical creatures legends, and folklore. The book is divided into six major categories as Arthropoda, An ancient Aviary, Cryptic Canines, The Eternal Hiss, Unusual Ungulates, and Aquatic beasts.
✨The author has done immense research to collect information about all these creatures. Some of my fav creatures which I liked the most are Kiyohime, Tikbalang, Uchchaihshravas, Timingila.
✨Kiyohime - was a fire-breathing serpent in a well-known Japanese folktale.
✨Tikbalang - ( Filipino folklore) is a spirit that dwells in the forests. It likes to play tricks on travelers, leading them astray by making them take the wrong path until they are lost.
✨Uchchaihshravas - (Hindu Mythology) came into being when the ocean of milk was churned by the Devas, the Asuras, and the demons. Considered the king of all horses.
✨The illustrations were amazing and it made this book a page-turner. I really enjoyed this book. You'll get to know about many creatures across the world. The author has depicted every creature very well.
✨I recommend this book to everyone especially mythology lovers and those who want to start reading mythology can go for this one. You'll love it. The language is lucid and the writing style is amazing. Also, I love love the cover of this book. It's fantastic. Go and grab this book!!
