Humans can't inherit vampire covens...or can they?
Despite being from an aristocratic family, all I wanted was a normal life. I was more saddened by my grandfather's ill health than I was by the knowledge that my father would get the family title. Having been raised by my grandfather for almost my entire life, I felt as if I was losing more than my grandfather. I was losing my best friend.
When my grandfather made a deathbed request, I couldn't say no. I flew to Italy to deliver a message to an old friend of his. I had no idea my little trip would lead me to a world I never knew existed or to a man I couldn't forget.
Between my grandfather's death and dodging my money-grubbing father's spiteful manipulations, learning vampires are real doesn't faze me much. Inheriting a vampire coven is another thing altogether. I never wanted to have a title, but the threats against my life leave me no choice. In order to stay alive, I'll have to accept being a vampire prince.
The first about 40% of the book was decent. Not great, not a very original or well-written story but decent enough. And then it just goes downhill.
Now, the first 40% of the book is a slow start. Chance has to fly to Italy to get his grandfather's friend, he meets several people, eventually his grandfather dies, there's a funeral... There's no love interest going on anywhere in the story there. This part is fairly boring but I liked the pace and the love Chance had for his grandfather was real. I also liked that this part felt mostly realistic. Sure, there were some issues but nothing really standing out.
And then all of a sudden, things are happening at lightning speed. Chase gets attacked, prince Giovanni sends a bodyguard, things go bad so they fly to Italy, Chase finds out vampires are real, not even a day later he gets adopted by the prince and his consort and a couple days later the prince and consort go away (without even saying goodbye I might add) and bada bing bada boom, Chase is now leader of the coven. What exactly this entails you never really see. What are his duties, where are all the people in his coven, where does he get money... It's never explained. I think the writer just wanted to make sure Chance has a title that was more important than that of his father.
In between, literally out of freaking NOWHERE, Chance and Yuri have sex. Really, they go from Chance thinking Yuri doesn't like him and Yuri being away every time, to having sex. And trust me when I say, there was no sexual tension between them at all whatsoever. It was just, Yuri came back, was in Chance's room and BAM, sex.
Okay, so, it's instalove? Right? Vampires come with fated mates so of course they instantly like each other. Yes, only, the whole fated mates thing is never really explained that well and the relationship between Yuri and Chance was boring, disappointing and not really a relationship at all. There's no sexual tension, no alpha need to protect, no secret glances, vulnerability, nervousness... Nothing is happening between them. Even after the night where they have sex and Yuri claims Chance, it doesn't change much at all. The love is still non-existent and the moments where you can see them enjoying each other's company are well, never. I was hoping for some tenderness, moments where they are together and talk, maybe do something fun, get to know each other, learn, love... Doesn't really happen.
There's not much sex either, but the sex scenes are sort of okay. Nothing special and especially that first scene comes very sudden so you as reader are not in the mood for sex at all, but I've read worse at least.
And then, the story. From the 40% on the story just gets ridiculous. Chance's father is an ass but he goes from being fairly happy and ignoring his son to not stopping at anything. I was confused why all of a sudden he turned violent and was so much worse. There is no explanation given. The writer needed a bad guy and despite this bad guy being in Chance's life for 25 years and never showing this behavior, now it's normal apparently and no one thinks it weird.
Also, side note, I was very disappointed we never got to see what Giovanni's punishment was for Chance's father. Even almost at the end of the book, the guy is still running around freely, messing up everyone's lives. Despite Giovanni promising he'd take care of it. Not sure how.
What also annoyed me to no end was the need to top up everything. First, Chance is some kind of lord. He doesn't have the official title (his grandfather left that to his father) but he has an estate and apparently is someone important. But that's not enough, oh no, now he needs to be a prince. He needs to be coven-leader and royalty. Nevermind that neither of those things come with the actual baggage and back-up claims to make it feel real. Is that at least enough then? No no, still not. Because apparently later he needs to be king as well.
It makes no sense, I didn't even particularly like the character. Chance isn't a bad guy but there's not much personality in him. But for some reason, everyone liked him and were bending over backwards to make him happy.
It got annoying fast and most of the story I was just rolling my eyes and wondering if it really would be such a bad thing if I DNF'ed. So yeah, when you're reading this book and thinking about doing that, just go for it. Trust me, things will not get any better.
Intriguing premise, enough so that I could engage and finish reading, but the pacing was a bit off for my tastes. Whereas so many books could stand to lose a couple hundred pages, this book could have easier added 100-200, further developed the plot and bomb between the main couple. With a bit more character and story development this had potential to be a 4-5⭐️ book (for me). As it stands, it was a good read, great cleanser between books, easy and low angst. If that’s what you’re here for - this is the book for you!
Nope. Nope. Nope. I would like to bestow upon this book the following awards: Quickest Romance and Quickest Sex Scene That Came Out Of Nowhere.
I have read insta-love and insta-lust before (sadly) but this one right here? This one takes the fucking cake so far. When the first sex scene started I got literal whiplash. Like I was a passenger on a car going 200mph only for the driver to stop suddenly making the seatbelt choke me and then breaking my neck. I had to GO BACK pages thinking I skipped a crucial scene that explained as to why these two were suddenly taking their clothes off and having sex. I legit thought I skipped a handful of pages. I am serious. I am so fucking serious oh my god. A proper transition at the very least? Nope, I don’t know her.
Also if you came to this book for vampires? Forget about it. The amount of vampire related stuff we get (as far as 72% goes which is pretty fucking far) was fuck all. We get like 2 scenes that were vampire related and that’s it. Enjoy!
It read more like a mafia book (bad mafia but mafia nonetheless)
This was a rollercoaster. A bad rollercoaster and I puked at the end of it.

Overall, the book could have been longer, with considerably more details.
I just kept reading despite being confused and frustrated at every new event and major change because I liked Chance's personality and gumption. More details as significant changes happened around Chance would have allowed me to better relax into the story, which I found intriguing and different from other stories about vampires. I nearly quit reading as Drake, Chance's father, escalated his absurdly moronic and childish bullying attempts. It was obvious he would try to end Chance's existence; I kept waiting for the other shoe to drop, as the writer was clearly working toward a more shocking conclusion. All in all, the book was good. It kept me hanging on, reading through to the end, after all, when I considered quitting a few times. Three and a half stars - I still believe more than a few transitional details (like perhaps real-time flashbacks, so we could see Drake being the jerk he was to Chance) rather than having Chance summarize them for us as he relayed his history to officials and significant persons he encountered would have helped the story unfold better. That is, of course, simply my opinion.😇
I honestly think it is worth it. I balked at the 5.99 price because of the mixed reviews so I got it on KU first. Honestly Im about to go back and buy it for reals. 4.5 stars easy. It was interesting and made me smile. There were some issues, mostly with yuri to be honest but I still found the characters likeable and the plot line entertaining.
Missing half a star because this sad attempt at "insta-love". Nothing about their early interactions would have led me to believe they were anything at all to each other. Chance thought yuri was super hot, awesome, but then they barely communicated at all and suddenly chance is so overcome by lust he drops to his knees after 30 seconds? And even after yuri pretty much just grunted alot anyway. It got better later on but that was just like ramming two characters together and saying " you're fated, have sex now".
I still liked this story and would definitely recommend it. Its definitely re-read able and I think ill enjoy it just as much when I do.
This book could’ve been so much better. Literally around 50% through the book your just so wrapped up in the world and all it’s drama you forget that it’s also a romance book. Book was a solid 3.5 star I think the relationship was just so rushed. You didn’t even get to know who chance ends up with till like 40% then the relationship between them was just instant which is weird because throughout chances while life he’s been able to see red flags and not rush things through. There’s so much going on in this world that we don’t get answers to and I felt like this book could’ve been a series and a really good one if the author had spaced things out right and brought more information on chances background and vampires etc etc.
I just finished another book by Aja Foxx yesterday and I think I should stick to her paranormal books. The over the top elements lend themselves to paranormal books rather than contemporary ones. For a romance book there was surprisingly low amount of romance in this book. The blurb was misleading in making it seem like the book focused on both Chance and Yuri, while in truth Yuri doesn't even show up in the story almost 25% of the way in to the story. And for him being the romantic interest he plays almost no part in the story. But putting the romance aside, this was a much better and funner read than The Marriage Contract. I am looking forward to reading The Art of Seduction that is set in the same world as this book.
While I love the premise of the story is great, I found the story a bit lacking. When you meet Chance, he has a whole adventure as his grandfather, who is dying, sends him to Italy to meet a Prince and give him a ring. That sets off a chain of events where Chance is threatened my his father, who wants his grandfather's title, all of the property that comes with the title, and all his money. Instead, he learns Chance is keeping his grandfather's house and half the money. It's a ways in before you meet Chance's mate, Yuri, who's sent to protect him. And that's when the story really takes off. The story ended too early and I could have read so much more.
I enjoyed Chance's story. I don't want to give too much away, so all I'll say is the story lost a star because I wasn't happy with the way Chance & Yuri interacted initially. Yuri was very standoffish which I kind of understood & Chance kept jumping from like to dislike, then suddenly he's throwing himself at Yuri & jumping into bed. It made it difficult to believe the connection they suddenly have, but things get better as the story progressed & it ends up being a good read.
I absolutely loved this book. Chance is amazing and I enjoyed getting to know him. This book was so good and completely worth reading. It just sucks you on from the start and you don’t want to come up for air until it’s done, even then you’re left wanting more. I loved the characters and their interactions are fun and light even with the serious moments involved. I so wish there was more to devour.
The book wasn't too bad! It was fun to read, and the plot was interesting. The main character seemed a bit immature for his age and the content the book was based about. There were holes in the plot, and some things were confusing and not well followed up. But overall, it's not too bad. This author definitely has some good books and wouldn't judge her writing ability on this one.
Well overall an enjoyable read, altough nothing too special. i think it started good but deteriorated a bit after they go to italy for the second time and the insta-lust-love start. By the way, please stop making your character speak in another language if you don't even have the decency to write those few word correctly, google translator is not a good reference.
A sweet little bit of fluff for a lazy afternoon. Chance, a young human, is sent to Italy to return a ring and give a message to a prince from his dying grandfather. This sets off a series of events where he ultimately ends up the prince of the Italian vampires. Sweet, sunshiny Chance meets his soulmate in gruff Yuri. And gets his HEA. We get a fast moving storyline which was quite fun to read.
Muddled, yet interesting??? I was left feeling slightly underwhelmed... Yuri's and Chance's first intimate moment was just kinda outta nowhere... Left the reader a bit befuddled as to how we got love making and vampire kisses... I personally, don't recommend this to anyone...
Minor snarks 1. no English Lord would name his heir aparent Duke... Lord Duke Sutton ?? And the Granson is called Chance? 2. I'm going to guess the author is American and it kind of shows... a tiny bit of research regarding travel in Europe would help. Otherwise OK, seggs seems to be thrown in to keep the plot moving.
I really enjoy Ms. Fox's writing and this story is no exception. While I enjoyed this book, I wish it had been told in both sides so that we also got to see Yuri's perspective. Nonetheless, it was still a good book.
I loved the modern vampire story as it was not as bloodthirsty as some can be and it hit the spot for a bit of heat and a bit of action. There were spelling and grammatical errors that were stumbling blocks but otherwise it was a good quick read.
This was my first read by aja foxx and i loved their writing style. Definitely about to add them to the follow list and check out the rest of their books.
I hope there's going to be a sequel. (If not already)
This was a fairly quick read that was tons of fun. A little farfetched at times but that made it even better because it was simply a total escape to a world of princes and hot vampire mates!
Such a great story, the characters are so engaging and the flow of the story is spot on. Totally love the ending and what happens to 'the bad guy' (trying not to give spoilers). Very good read, recommend.
Aja's stories on Royal vampires are fantastic and I want more I don't want them to end!!! Lots of laughs angst & love an extremely well written story that I fell into and didn't want to leave - - maybe a beloved for Dante????
This book was fun and tantalizing loved Chance and Yuri and all the characters in this story. Would love more maybe the king finding his consort. Couldn't stop reading once I started.
Good story but there wasn’t much if any character development. Also the characters in the book where constantly hopping from one place to another. There was no down time to help with fleshing the book out a bit.
