Neustatter's European Security Services encounters a campaign of industrial sabotage, a pastor who attempts to limit their client base, an espionage ring, and the aftermath of the Dreeson assassination. Old nemeses and new allies complicate matters.
Somewhere in Grantville is a missing heiress. There's also a Resistance, and it has cookies. Even repeat business with established clients is complicated, not to mention dangerous. Real life proves more complicated than Neustatter's movies or Astrid's books as NESS looks for common threads. Which incidents are related and which are not?
For Astrid Schäubin, solving cases, directing operations, and even portraying a saint are one thing, but figuring out dating in the midst of everything that's happening is quite another.
Security Threats is the third book in the NESS series, after A Matter of Security and Missions of Security.
At the publisher's request, this title is sold without DRM (Digital Rights Management).
2022 bk 99. I started reading this just after supper and finished it in the last minute before midnight - and yes it held my attention. A little more romantic tension was provided as the men and women of NESS maneuver to provide our main female character with a romantic interest, there are more problems with that 'other'security firm, and life continues to change for the downtimers in an uptimers city. Excellent book and I hope there will be a fourth book.
Third novel in the NESS series of the 1632 Universe
In this volume we have the further adventures of Neustatter's European Security Service or NESS for short. We learn what they were doing during the main events covered in the mainline novels set in 1634-May 1635 filling in events as seen from a different viewpoint. I look forward to further novels as we approach the 1637 timeframe where the Ottoman invasion of Austria and the Russian civil war are major story lines.
Very enjoyable read. More character depth and growth. Adventure and action mixed with detective work. Like real life things don't always get neatly wrapped up, but continue on at uneven cooking. I especially like the mention other other "dramatic current events" that happen in other books from these characters view points who learn of the news but were never close to those other people. Like real life. Bjorn, please keep these stories coming. :)
I like the Ring of Fire. And most books I read get 3 stars. But there have been two spin offs from the ROF that have really grabbed my attention. The Holmes for Czar and now the Matter of Security. These two groups should have more books added. Volume three adds more trouble for NESS. It slips into events of the main books and adds to those stories. The characters are growing, developing deeper personalities as events shape their lives. And the book with the other two just beg for more adventures.
I think this is the weakest offering in the NESS series to date. It took a 100 pages to get going, and it was clouded by too many narratives. I would have deep sixed the Resistance arc and some of the theological bits. Additionally, I get WHY the german words are thrown into the mix, to imply language growing and changing, but other authors would summarize it was "x,yz, in amidutch" and it does the same thing.
I'll still return to Bjorn's offerings, I just hope they get stronger.
Astrid started her job in the security business as the secretary. She trained to be an agent and did her first job as the agent protecting female clients. As needed she takes on more and more jobs.
This looks more closely at life in Granville which I found fascinating. The religious discourses are too long and boring, to me and confusing. I assume there is another volume to come with everything left in limbo. Despite the slow long bits a good read.
Another excellent addition to the Ring of Fire multiseries. I am hoping to see more from Bjorn in the future, but that is up in the air at this time. Definitely recommend to anyone enjoying stories about Grantville.
I really love this series within the 1632 series. The best part is how he weaves this story around the main story line without directly having anything to do with the events.
Great continuation of the series. The main characters grow in their profession and develop new skills and relationships. The storyline is well thought out and uses tension and friendship between the different companies, people, and nations move the plot along.
Looking forward to the next book with the hope the it comes quickly.
