Janet’s done it again and, as always, not at all in the way I expected. I’m not sure what I expected from Reset, but it was probably closer to the traumatic thriller that was Run than this equally beautiful but totally different masterpiece. It was so lovely to hear from secondary characters who are already living theirs HEAs, and also to meet Ryan after his head trauma. I think one of Janet’s best gifts in writing is developing a character while also keeping them the same person. It’s a very rare gift among writers and several far more well known authors than Janet really can’t do it.
Ryan has genuinely grown up in Reset, he’s mature, he’s logical, he’s making good relationship decisions… but at the same time, he’s still RYAN. He’s still the sweet, sensitive guy who will goof around when people need to smile and hug them when they need to cry. I just love him.
Sarah is brand new, and it took me maybe 3 pages to take to her, and decide that yes, she is totally perfect for Ryan. She reminded me a little of Julia, a little of Isobel, a little of myself (we have the same fears!) but mostly of the exact person Ryan has needed since we met him. She was brave, smart, resourceful, sensible, but also wonderfully human and real and just perfect. She was also quite lucky, Janet had clearly restrained herself. I’m pretty sure I only shouted “Janet, stop hurting them!” at the book once, which is probably a Bensons Security record.
Instead of traumatising her readers the way she did in Run, Reset was all about the feels, the adventure, the suspense, the family. I am so going to miss this series and these amazing characters, but have to admit it was a beautiful way to end it. A perfect finale saying goodbye to the Benson Security family - the same crazy misfit bunch of people who were first lumped together at the end of Here Comes the Rainne Again. The team Callum was so unimpressed with, now his chosen family. A family made up of a surly Scot, a crazy positive blue-haired tech, a vicious tongued ice queen, an office manager who hides behind plants, a trigger happy ex-hairdresser with no fear, and a human eating machine - plus the perfect significant others Janet has paired them with in the last 7 books. I just love them and if Janet changes her mind and decides to continue the series, there will be no one more excited than me. I’d also love to hear more about Ryan’s sister, would love to know where Janet could go with her.
I was once again honoured to receive an ARC of Janet’s new book, and I could not have loved it more. I would highly recommend to anyone who enjoys romance, suspense, comedy, or themes of chosen family.
