Tai Pham struggles with balancing school, his work in the family business, his friendships, and his new Green Lantern responsibilities. But Kid Flash arrives on the scene to become the super-hero partner Tai just might need.
It’s only been a few months since Green Lantern Tai Pham inherited his ring from his ba and defeated his nemesis, Xander Griffin. But Tai knows their last battle was only the beginning—and even though no one believes him, Tai is determined to prove that Xander is up to his old tricks again.
When a string of fires start popping up around Coast City, Tai finds himself stretched thin as he struggles to keep up with school, training, working at the store, and following Xander’s trail. That is, until a new hero, known as Kid Flash, shows up on the scene with an offer to help.
Can the heroes find the arsonist before it’s too late?
Minh Lê is the author of Drawn Together illustrated by Caldecott Medalist Dan Santat and Let Me Finish! (named an NPR Best Book of 2016) illustrated by Isabel Roxas (both published by Disney-Hyperion). He is also writing Green Lantern: Legacy, a graphic novel (illustrated by Andie Tong) for the new DC Comics middle grade imprint, DC Zoom. As a member of the kidlit consortium The Niblings, he writes about children's literature at Bottom Shelf Books and for a variety of publications, including the New York Times, The Horn Book, and HuffPost.
So this picks up from last volume but this time teams Tai with Irey (KF) and fun twists with DC history here regarding Flashes and GL here but the main story here being some arsonist group called "Scorched earth" are targeting Xander, whose now running for Mayor of Coast city and so can these two and their friends save Xander plus some heist stuff in the middle while Tai has to train with John and other members of GLC? PLus Xander's real plans..
Its a solid read and I like how fast-paced it is and I love the portrayal of Irey and how confident she is, plus the expanded role of Tommy and Serena in here, really makes you feel they have become a unit and the flashbacks to his grand-mother's time as GL and her teaming up with JL which was fun and the budding friendship there!
Its one of those comics which will make you fall in love with the world of green lantern and all but also with the supporting cast here and the ending setting up the big three-quel was amazing and I am so excited to read it!!
As Tai Pham eases into his role as Earth's Green Lantern, he goes up against a serial arsonist and makes a new friend, Kid Flash!
I thought Green Lantern Legacy, the previous entry in this series, was great so I was dying to pick this up.
As with the last book, I dug this quite a bit. Sure, I'm about 30 years past the use-by date for this but it reminds me of the recent Scooby Doo Team-Up series. It captures the essence of the DCU without being beholden to 60+ years of continuity.
Tai is still learning the ropes and his team-up with Iris, aka Kid Flash, hearkens back to Green Lantern-Flash team-ups of old. The plot is secondary. This is more about Tai's growth as a character and the importance of trust. Good thing, since Xander comes off as a young John Byrne-era Lex Luthor.
The theme of family continues to run through the series. I like that Tai's grandma knew Superman in her Green Lantern identity. I also thought it was cool that Hal Jordan was mentioned and Kyle Rayner makes an appearance. It makes the book feel more like it's in some version of the DC universe than the previous book did.
The writing is crisp and appropriate for a YA audience. Andie Tong's art is a good fusion of '90s Tom Grummett and some manga influence. I didn't find the coloring to be overdone like in a lot of modern comics.
Four out of five stars. Make with the next volume already.
I didn't love this one as much as the first book, but it was a lot of fun, with positive messaging for kids. They are simple, but true, messages in this book: friendship is important; we should try to do things the "right" way; and there are no good or bad people, just good or bad behavior. I think that it's also relatable to a lot of kids to feel like they have a lot of pressure and responsibilities, especially if they're helping their parents out a lot and have to keep up at school. My favorite parts might've actually been the flashbacks with Tai's grandmother hanging out with Superman and Flash. I hope this series has more books.
Another fun entry into this new Green Lantern universe. This volume doesn't focus as much on Tai's Vietnamese heritage, but more on his relationships to his Green Lantern mentor, his friends and new ally Kid Flash.
Again the art is great, I love Tai's Green Lantern outfit.
The story is aimed at kids so while it's fun it's also very straight forward.
Tai Pham is the least interesting Green Lantern in this book, and it is a long list to be at the bottom of. Every time his grandmother Kim Tran is shown with the green ring, I so wish the book were entirely about her.
The boring villain from the first volume gets a second chance to do something interesting and also fails. Kid Flash tries to add zest, but she too fails.
This series is aimed at kids, and this adult needs to stop picking it up.
There is a sneak peek for Bruce Wayne: Not Super in the back, and it looks truly awful. I'm thinking I need to avoid the DC Graphic Novels for Kids imprint entirely.
3.5/5. While not as great as the first volume still worth its salt if you liked the first volume. Its not bad but compared to the message I got out of the previous one this one feels like a more standard superhero tale. Its a bit disappointing since the message in the first volume was great and I was hoping we'd another great message here but instead we get superhero fare. Its also very apparent this is a trilogy now with this book coming off a bit as a lead in to the penultimate finale of the trilogy. I do enjoy whats here. The friend group that took up page space last volume is handled well here with them getting full treatment and time given to them. The focus is clearly on building them up a quad with the new Kid Flash who adds a nice light dash (haha) of abrasiveness to the chemistry. They also really up the GL references with many notable GLs making an appearance. But the GL stuff still feels a bit unrelated. Like it widens the scope which makes sense with the ending also widening the scope. But it doesn't add much else other than fanservice for GL fans when this is a kids graphic novel meant to actually introduce Green Lanterns. The ending is really good though. Art-wise its still super strong! Tong still does good detailed anatomy, amazing clothing, and nice action shots. I especially love their ability to render super powers. The constructs are amazing to look at with strong detailing and Kid Flash's blur and super speed was always a treat to look at. But a strong artistic moment is lacking. In the first volume you have the monochrome yellow-and-green backstory. Instead we get a lot more black silhouettes with green or yellow. When its done its done well with the color of the rings accentuating the feelings of the characters that mirror their nice posing in those panels. But I miss the banger color choice of the first volume with the grandma's backstory and other moments. One last nitpick is the lettering. This is a small GN and there is a lot packed into many of the bubbles. I wish the GN was a bit larger to fix the font size issue.
I like the concept… Tai is a great character, and I love the background with his grandmother, but the writing in this is incredibly rough (I’m sorry, but I just can’t get past Superman effectively saying “Dude, chill” to Lex Luther), and the plot was somehow more predictable than the previous volume.
Giving it two stars because I think the characters are a solid base to work with, if the right team were working on the story, and also for the inclusion of Ch’p. 💚
This is a great continuation of the first book, and made even better with the addition of Irey West, aka Kid Flash. The author weaves a lot of Green Lanterns into the story, as well as some other small Easter eggs for DC fans.
Tong's art is superb and I'd love to see him on a regular title.
I enjoyed Minh Lê’s first Green Lantern story, Legacy, immensely, and quickly fell in love with the use of the grandmother/mentor figure. This sequel brings in a host of additional DC characters, including the Flash, John Stewart, and other Lanterns, solidifying this Lantern as a fixture and possible continuing character.
The art is colorful and attractive, and the story draws on Vietnamese culture in a way that feels organic. All of this, along with my affinity for these characters, makes the book and entertaining and high quality read. I would gladly add it to my school library or classroom shelf, as well.
Here’s hoping for a third entry, as promised in the final pages.
Minh Lê does it again with another great graphic novel. This one incorporates the power of friendship and everyone doing their part, no matter the superpower. Kid Flash is a fun addition, I love seeing the different Green Lanterns helping out (with a special shoutout to John Stewart, always a solid choice). I hope there are many more in the future.
This sequel to Green Lantern:Legacy was really done well. It's mainly another generation of Green Lantern and Flash team up as Tai meets and teams up with the Irey, Wally West's daughter and the latest Kid Flash. Scorched Earth is an unknown organization torching buildings throughout Coast City. There's also a Yellow Lantern floating around who Tai is told to leave alone while he continues to train. The overall villain of this volume is lacking some. It's all about Tai and his friends as they try to take down Scorched Earth. Loved the heist angle as well. It's left open to make an obvious third volume as well.
A decent follow up to Green Lantern: Legacy. While it doesn't have the charm as the first story, it still packs some good action and certainly moves the story forward.
The 'legacy' elements really carried the first story - and that's not as present anymore. Le relies on some flashbacks to give us more of Kim Tran, but it doesn't quite hit the same as in Legacy.
As for what actually happens in this story, Tai gets a new friend, we get to see more of his training, and we get a promise of more to come.
Overall, this one gets a 6/10 for the story and an 8/10 for the art. While I did enjoy the art here, it doesn't elevate it enough to warrant 4 stars. That said, I do hope to see more of Tai.
Newest Green Lantern, Tai Pham, is continuing his training, keeping an eye on Xander (who he does NOT trust), and helping out around the city as he can. An arsonist is plaguing the city and a visiting Kid Flash offers her help. Tai and his friends try to figure out if they can trust this girl, and then get obsessed in finding a way to take down Xander before he runs for mayor.
This turns into a very clever heist story at the end, and I really liked what Lê did with it. Kid Flash was a great addition to Tai's group of friends, and I liked how the author and illustrator incorporated bits of Tai's Vietnamese heritage with the snacks he and his friends eat as well as things that come up just hanging out around his parents' store.
Notes on content: No language issues that I remember. No sexual content. There are some battles and perilous situations in the fires, but everyone ends up ok.
Even better than the first volume. I loved the introduction of Iris as Kid Flash, and that Tai's non-powered friends have a significant part to play in the book. The flashbacks to Tai's grandmother as Green Lantern are cool, and do a lot to establish her personality. The ending hinges around a heist, which I was not at all convinced about before it started. However, it ended up being a fun and clever way to wrap up this particular book. There's an opening for the next book on the last few pages, and I'm looking forward to it.
Very fun book! I picked it up from my local comic book store and read through it quickly. It’s a sequel but it’s got enough information about the first book that I didn’t feel lost of confused. Had lots of cool ideas and the artwork was delightful! I imagine it’s a fantastic book for it’s intended audience
Not a very good sequel to the first book, Green Lantern: Legacy, as the villain is less threatening and compelling. Scorched Earth is an unknown organization, which is burning buildings throughout Coast City. Tai finds a new powerful friend (Kid Flash) to help him defeat Scorched Earth, and they seem to bond over their burdens of leading a double life. I hope the third volume is better.
I'm not a DC fan by any means, but I've really enjoyed the Tai Pham's career as a Green Lantern so far! This one was less about his Vietnamese background and more about teamwork but that's also important.
This was an incredible follow-up to Legacy, and I am glad I read them both! The new character was fun and confident, and I enjoyed the cameos again of some of the GL crew. Quick and very engaging read!
Super duper quick read, but I loved being able to come back to this cast of characters. Glad to see there was a sequel and that we’re getting a third book!
A great and fun romp with lots of classic GL Corps characters for die-hard fans. I like the young friends of the hero. Tai is a good character and the addition of Iris West was smart and fun.
