This is no Ordinary Vacation...

When newly retired spy Irma Abercrombie entices a computer engineer for a month-long stay at her island home, the plan is to introduce her to a laidback country lifestyle. But when nerdy couch potato Violet Blackheart accepts Irma’s invitation, she doesn’t realize her host has a shadowy past, a need for speed, and a penchant for industrial-strength tea.

Then an eccentric neighbour’s household is embroiled in chaos after her newly-installed pet door attracts an interloper. But to figure out what—or who—is helping themselves to their neighbour’s open (doggie) door policy, Irma has to entice Violet off the couch and into a mystery that’ll nudge them both out of their comfort zones.

Irma wants to secure the perimeter. Violet just wants a nap.

This was a short, cute prequel to the series. I didn't love this one, but it was good. Irma is funny and quirky but I don't feel invested in her character & I didn't vibe with her in this book for whatever reason. I am still looking forward to continuing the series and hopefully that changes. :0)

Based on references to prior events contained within Vitamin Sea, the first book in the series, I realized there must be a prequel. It’s a free novelette from the author for signing up for her newsletter.

Irmageddon is a fun short that introduces ex-spy Irma and nerdy tech wiz Violet. The story is shared via the alternating first person POVs of Irma and Violet. The pair aren’t necessarily friends, but definitely good acquaintances. Violet is staying with Irma on Beaver Island, a wealthy vacation area filled with longtime residents and their family money. Together they help discover what happened to Irma’s neighbor’s dog’s missing toy. The story lays the groundwork for the Beaver Island Mystery series by setting the scene and giving readers a solid first look at both Irma and Violet’s personalities.

Irmageddon is a fun, standalone, low-risk mystery.

I found a note at the end of Peace on Earth that said if I signed up for the author's newsletter that I ould receive this prequal book free. I was glad I did. It helped me understand who all the people were in the previous book. Though honestly, Maia Ross does mention Irma's background in the previous book and no in the book Joy to the World I am reading. I don't think these need to be read in order.

I love Irma, who by the way, was a British secret agent (MI6?) before she retired. In these books, she lives on Beaver Island in Lake Ontario 2 hours north of Toronto. For 71, she is amazingly spry and constantly active with her "agent" senses alway on the lookout. And for a small island there are a lot of mysteries to solve! She reminds me of Angela Lansbury, in Murder She Wrote and SuperGranny in the Supergranny mysteries written for 4th-8th graders back in the 1980s. Don't even know if they are in print anymore.

Love the stories, love the characters, love the descriptions by the author. Looking forward to reading the rest of these Beaver Island Mysteries!

This was an intriguing story. Normally I don't like short stories or novellas or anything like that. I don't usually like them because I tend to feel like I'm missing things because there's a wider story within that narrative, there's background to the characters that I'm not getting in that story.

I liked the characters, though I will say I'm not sure I completely grasped everything about them in this.

The overall story was engaging and enjoyable, and maybe sometime in the future I might come back to this world.

Thank you to author Maia Ross for sending me an ebook copy of this book through their mailing list.
