I'd seen this book keep cropping up on lists of 'best home decor' books , so when it came available as an ebook, from my local library, I thought I'd take a look. Actually, I suspect this good-looking volume works far better as a physical coffee-table book. I think I would have preferred to dip in and out, rather than having to work through it chronologically on a Kindle. The pictures are lovely but there's a lot of real-home tours and, honestly, if you'd accidentally pasted a photo from Bob's house into Janet's chapter, I don't think anyone would have noticed. (They probably weren't called Bob or Janet though, they were just people with nice homes and a lot of plants.)
Thoroughly enjoyable and inspiring! Beautifully photographed pictures and friendly, upbeat chat by Hilton Carter. Now I'm hankering for some new plants to fill up some rooms;)
Wild Interiors is a charming guide for beginner plant parents or those looking for some home decor inspiration. The photos (and the cover art, my goodness) are beautiful and feature a variety of homes and personal styles. The author strikes an endearing balance in serving as a welcoming guide to the world of plants while bringing the reader into the homes of plant lovers who, while somewhat relatable in that they don’t live in huge mansions (and I think I noticed stainless steel fridge smudges in one picture), certainly live a life where aesthetics, however natural or performative, feature prominently (Instagram handles of featured plant owners are all mentioned in the back of the book, by the way). This book does well to highlight a group of people who, yeah, have well-decorated and thoughtfully curated homes, but demonstrate a multitude of styles and ideas for displaying plants in all the little nooks and crannies one might find in their own home. The author (the most relatable person in the book, honestly) readily admits he is new(ish) to plants and doesn’t have windows in his own kitchen or bathroom. His style of writing here is more blog than book, but the welcoming and humble tone creates a book that can be enjoyed by any kind of plant owner in any dwelling. Where plant care specifics were provided, the details can become a bit repetitive, as was some of the owner “insight.” I don’t know that I would use this as a definitive plant care reference, but I will definitely be revisiting it before my next trip to the plant nursery.
Hilton Carter is a plant stylist. I really enjoyed seeing the luscious interiors and reading the different stories of the people who have homes that are brimming with greenery. Lots of useful tips on decorating with, and taking care of, plants 🪴 I actually read it cover to cover, rather than just glancing through the pretty pictures.
I learn so much from Hilton Carter’s books, but in truth they are just so beautiful and fascinating. As a plant lover, I get so much pleasure from Mr. Carter’s books that I can’t even put it into words.
Beautiful book. I loved looking into the homes of fellow plant lovers. Carter has great tips and his writing style is fun and positive. Got some new ideas for my own home and plant family after reading this!
The photography is lovely. Even though the homes were from all over the world they all followed the same template in room color and material( almost every wall was white, leather camel colored furniture and wood elements). I also feel like good architecture was more of a element, in most spaces, then plants. It was more ohh and ahhing than getting a understanding of plant care, placement and environment although there were little snatches on care on most plants but it didn't go beyond the stuff you see stuck in most plants when you buy them.
Over all it's a coffee table/ inspiration book and that's ok.
Pretty pictures but very difficult to use. Carter writes like a blog post and refers to Instagram influencers as “the plant community.” To not have seen a “shelfie” is to not be part of the plant community (p. 216). Save yourself the trouble and just get your picture fix for free online. Buy a book with actual styling or plant care advice.
I am glad you cannot hear the noises I made when I was reading this book. It's very pretty and inspiring, although I wish the range of popular house plants was a bit wider. I appreciate that this author included many different sizes of living spaces and international homes as well.
Beautiful book full of inspirational photos. But the writing was repetitive and didn’t add a lot. I mostly just skimmed. The key point was: know what type of light you have before you put a plant in a room.
A beautiful book filled with inspiration and information. Hilton Carter is a plant lover and in this book he interviews and visits several couples and people with similar aspirations to discuss and describe their plant decorating. The photos are amazing and very inspiring. The text for each is informative; discussions on what works where, favorite plants, displaying techniques and ideas are all shared. What's more, the plants themselves are described and readers may learn how to water, where to display and how to care for the plants. Decorating with plants is an amazing way to bring the outdoors in, and give peace to any type of living space. You just need to know the proper choices and places. This book also includes great tips for dealing with pets and plants, and how to avoid a lethal combination. Its interesting, and most of all, fun!
Disappointing. With a title like 'wild interiors' I expected to be shown spaces that were just brimming with plants and using plants in ways that I wouldn't have thought of. But it's basically just fairly average homes with only slightly more than average amounts of houseplants, potted in very ordinary containers, set in the usual spots on windowsills, countertops, floor groupings etc. Nothing very innovative or creative. And all the homes looked alike. What's the point unless you're going to really wow us?
This is a coffee table book that is packed full of photos and narrative. It was delightful to read it all! I love being inspired for home decor and this was the first book about plants in that regard. I knocked off a star because the plants were not labeled by their photos. That would have been very helpful. I know many, but definitely not all and would have appreciated that. I have a lot plants and propagated many from the ones I own and use them prolifically in my decor. I love it!!
This is my second Hilton Carter book. I get both and for the second time I've gotten both more and less than I expected. It's a little short on information I can really put into practice with my person plant care — I can't exactly redesign my house to look like one of those featured. But I learned so much about things I didn't know I was looking for. And the design and layout are so gorgeous that the text could all be lorem ipsum and I wouldn't be mad about it.
Actually 3.5 stars, but I rounded up due to the great pictures. It's basically a book with a bunch of peeps he knows and their fairly stunning houses/apartments. I didn't find the plant styling to be all that outstanding, but I kept wondering how they all found these fabulous places to live (and most weren't that huge, but had some remarkable character). Well worth looking thru a couple of times.
156:2023 I liked this book but didn't love it. I WISH my library had had a print copy because paging through like coffee table book would've given the images more impact. I am not a plant fanatic, so the gushing about the plants for 2/3rds of the book was a little tedious. I DID appreciate the room by room suggestions and definitely learned more than I knew to start.
I heard the author speak at a garden expo, and I connected with his connection to plants. I really am not that interested in being inspired to copy the "design" of trendy, fashionable homes, even with plants. The plant care tips for individual plants were very brief and generic. But he wrote from his heart about how wonderful it is to live with plants, this is where the book shone.
This coffee table book is beautiful, inspirational, educational and fun - will definitely pick it up again before a nursery trip and for home styling ideas. And as a Baltimore native I love the mentions of Rawlings Conservatory. :)
Another beautiful book by Hilton Carter! Spoiler alert- beautiful plant designs highlighted in this book will make you want to rethink your own home design immediately! Plant shop here I come!
