The twelve linked stories in Squadron have the power-packed punch of a novel. Blending terror, humour, romance, and courage, they demonstrate anew why Spencer Dunmore ranks among the world's best writers of aviation fiction.
Spencer Dunmore writes short stories with O. Henry-like twists that reflect his deep knowledge the culture and technology of an R.A.F. squadron flying Halifaxes on bombing raids during World War II. The linked short stories allow the reader to develop an attachment to characters who come and go as quickly as they would have during war-time. There is some repetition between stories in routines, settings and atmosphere but this is not a fault. This collection is wonderfully informative and entertaining.
You have to approach this book not as a novel but as a collection of short stories that give the taste of British bomber squadron in Bomber Command. It is great to read a story every night as a nice way calm down at the end of the day.
