Fictional Truth: A Stella Kirk Mystery # 4

Rate this book
The Shale Harbour First Annual Writers Retreat ends almost before it begins when a budding author is found dead at the bottom of the stairs at the Community Hall and Playhouse. He was a collector of the secrets of others; an unpleasant young man disliked by most. The workshop instructors have questionable backgrounds, partake in clandestine affairs, and are cloaked in confidential circumstances. Stella Kirk and Aiden North sort through the noise, understand the victim’s methods, and finally determine what is fiction and what is truth.

Fictional Truth is the 4th installment in L.P Suzanne Atkinson’s Stella Kirk cozy mystery series. This novel is set at the end of September, beginning of October in 1981, at the end of the season for the Shale Cliffs RV Park, and during the Shale Harbour’s first annual writer’s retreat.

Despite all the hard work of the event’s planning committee, their “little retreat started off on the wrong foot” at registration on Friday and it “stayed firmly planted there”, with one of the authors found dead at the bottom of the stairs in the Community Hall and Playhouse on Sunday morning. (pg 37-38) RCMP Detective Aiden North and amateur sleuth Stella Kirk, part-owner of Shale Cliffs, investigate and try to determine whether it was an accident-a case of misadventure or was it intentional and he was pushed down the stairs.

I enjoyed seeing the reoccurring characters from Atkinson’s previous books making appearances in this book either by helping in some fashion with the investigation or in closing down the park for the season or even in participating in the retreat itself. The story had a good flow and kept me interested until the very end despite the fact that, in this one, I guessed the outcome correctly midway through the story. I am looking forward to reading book 5 and revisiting Stella, Nick, Aiden, and the Shale Cliffs RV Park.

Fictional Truth, the 4th in the Stella Kirk Mystery series, is released for pre-order across all platforms and available March 15, 2022. Below is a review from Teresa Patterson, who read an early release copy. I have rated this 5 stars on her behalf and I thank her:

I received and read my copy of "Fictional Truth". It is so interesting and fun to follow Stella Kirk in her quest for justice that I now anxiously await the next one.
In Fictional Truth as in all the books in this series, there are several characters, some repeats, some new, but all of them are well defined, all of them have good qualities and little quirks so it's nice to revisit them and not get confused about who is who.
It also makes the reader see that even with flaws, we are all people and should never be judged too quickly.
This is well researched, well written and it makes the reader feel they are part of the scenery and in a position to watch all that is going on without ever being lost.
Looking forward to the next installment.

Stella Kirk continues to aid investigations into murders in Shale Harbour. (I tend to think the small community will soon be decimated with so many deaths in such a short time.)

Her police compatriot has desperate family troubles on his mind this time around and Stella finds herself out on a limb after the first annual writers retreat ends prematurely after the death of a young, albeit nasty, man.

The wonderful Nick helps her look after the trailer park, while she delves into the latest mystery.

Great fun!
