Two years ago, Nobel laureate Dr. Allisyn McLoren unexpectedly left her prestigious research position. Since then, as FDA commissioner she has restored the legitimacy and reputation of the troubled agency plagued by prior mismanagement and numerous deficiencies.
But now she finds herself under pressure from government sources and a prior colleague to circumvent protocol and personally expedite approval of a bio-tech firm’s new form of gene therapy, and she’s at a loss to explain their motive.
When a homicide detective’s investigation of a deadly altercation between two friends leads him to Allisyn, together they uncover a conspiracy to defraud the government that has deadly consequences. In her pursuit of the evidence to expose the deception and prevent further harm she must overcome a response that threatens her reputation, career, and even her life.
This was such a fun read! I don't typically read these kinds of thrillers, but I made an exception because the premise sounded so interesting and I loved the cover. And it didn't disappoint! Lots of exciting twists and turns and I couldn't put it down. I ended up binging it two days. You can tell the author knows what he's talking about when it comes to the science and he did a great job of explaining everything so my not-science-inclined brain could easily follow along. Can't wait to see what he writes next!
Wrongful Acts is exemplary in its choice of topic or theme of the story. It is unique but still has strong appeal for most readers in its intended genre. This was the perfect blend of medicine and fiction. The pacing was perfect for a book in this genre. Sclama kept the action moving along at a fast clip, expertly building the tension. He grabbed my attention from the first page and didn't let go until the end. The plot is timely, given what is going on right now with the FDC, DHS, etc. It was interesting to learn how the FDC is supposed to work. The political intrigue, violence, and Pharma's attempts to get what it wants by any means possible were compelling and fascinating. The plot twists were well done. All main characters (including antagonists) are unique and fully fleshed out with compelling, layered motivations and traits. Secondary characters are unique and have a meaningful purpose. Wrongful Acts has all the ingredients for a fast-paced, action-packed political thriller that is so timely in today's Washington DC/Big Pharma arena. Not only was it a satisfying read, but it also is thought-provoking.
I started reading this book and couldn't put it down. The plot, the characters, the pace and the mention of familiar places in Georgetown and Washington, D.C. all worked together to create an exciting, gripping and enjoyable read. I highly recommend this book and look forward to the next one from this author.
Great Book and a real pager turner! I especially enjoyed all the twists and turns that I never expected. This author's debut book has me eager to read more from him. Let's hope it's soon. Highly recommend "Wrongful Acts".
ThIs was a great medical mystery book. It had me constantly trying to figure out who was involved in the conspiracy. I hope to see more books from Tony Sclama!
This was an incredibly unique story. Very thoughtfully written and intriguing. I cannot put the book down since it was so suspenseful. The short chapters work great for taking quick breaks. Although it was fiction, there was definitely food for thought about what the future holds. This will always be one of my all-time favorite books
Tony Sclama’s debut, WRONGFUL ACTS, offer readers a trifecta of chill factors in an unmissable medical thriller that taps into the futuristic world of gene therapy!
