R.L. Kenderson is two best friends writing under one name. They met in college and bonded over their love of reading and the TV show Charmed. They write spicy romance that often makes you laugh.
Madeline wants to make her birthday special and her boyfriend isn’t getting the message. One too many disappointing moments means she decides to throw the towel in. Now it’s up to her best friend to make her birthday special.
Griffin and Madeline have a night together. Can their friendship survive friends with benefits or will everything change?
I enjoyed watching this unfold. My favourite mistake is fun and heated.
Madeline and Griffin have been best friends since childhood. They haven't harbored feelings for each other or anything, but there's some mutual attraction there. When Madeline dumps her boyfriend of 1.5 years just two days before her 30th birthday, she's feeling free, and horny. When she's reminded that eternal bachelor and bar owner Griffin is well known for his sexual prowess, she tipsily decides that the best birthday present he could give her is a night of passion, and asks for just that. They have incredible sex, now what? Can their friendship survive unscathed?
This was a pretty good story. I thought the segue from friends to lovers felt really natural, which is hard to pull off when they've been friends for 20+ years.
This is an issue I run into a lot with friends to lovers romances: I absolutely believe that a man and a woman can be just friends. I believe that a man and a woman can be just friends for that long, while being close, and that attracted to each other. But no way do they stay super close best friends with someone they're really attracted to for over 20 years without at least considering the potential of a romantic relationship in their minds, and if neither of them develop romantic feelings for over two decades, it's for a strong reason.
Madeline and Griffin act like they had never thought about it, and I cry bullshit. Denial only works as an excuse so far. In that situation, they'd have to defend their choice to remain platonic over and over, and deny their romantic feelings for each other over and over. They would have at least a stock answer for why they never got together at the ready. The 'never fully considered it' angle rings glaringly false.
On the plus side, those were some hot sex scenes.
This is no fault of the novel's, but I kept getting distracted by my own personal experience while reading this. For one, I live in Minneapolis myself - the city proper - and I kept trying to guess which suburb they were in! It was a fun game. For two, before COVID I was a server/bartender, and whenever I read stories that involve working at bars and restaurants I can't help but think about it as an employee. Like, I get really anxious when a server or bartender gets in a long conversation with someone when the bar is supposed to be busy. I keep thinking about everything that they need to be doing instead! My mind just keeps looking at the situations in the bar from the servers and bartenders' perspectives, thinking about how they feel serving the boss's friends, or covering last minute, that kind of thing. Again, not a fault of the novel's, just my own hang up. It just came into play a lot in this story because the operation of the bar was mentioned quite a bit.
I enjoyed the MCs' friendship. The intimacy between best friends felt genuine and sweet. I did get a little annoyed at how much Madeline expected to be pampered on her birthday though. She seemed like kind of a princess that night. But when Griffin needed her, she pulled through in a really big way.
I'll give more details in a spoiler tagged footnote,* but was a little let down by their moment of resolution at the end, when they both finally had their feelings on the table. It was kind of anticlimactic. That tension of their feelings hadn't been built up enough for me to feel it fully I don't think.
A stray observation: wouldn't you specify what country in Europe you were going to for a week? I mean, you might not specify if you were going to travel around Europe, but you wouldn't travel around Europe in under a week, you'd go to a specific place.
All in all, while I didn't like it quite as much as the other two books I've read by these authors (Take Me in the Night and My Five Dates), it was still an enjoyable read.
This writing duo can do no wrong in my opinion. I adore reading best friends to lovers books and their version is one of the best I have read in quite some time. Griffin & Madeline have been best friends for a long, long time. Yes there have been “ thoughts “ on both their sides but neither have acted on it. Until one impulsive request on Madeline’s thirtieth birthday. Sometimes taking that next step comes across as kind of awkward, but with these two characters it just seemed natural. Superb writing - as usual- but overall it came down for me the brilliant storyline. I voluntarily reviewed an advanced readers copy of this book.
Omg! I absolutely love Madeline and Griffin! I absolutely love their banter back and forth as friends! But even more than that I love the scene when they are sitting in the booth at the bar! You'll know which one I mean when you read it! It is so hot! And it just gets better from there! Bravo to RL Kenderson! Such a good addition to the Love Like That series!
This was a good read. Madeline breaks up with her boyfriend. She then gets her best friend Griffin to sleep with her. Everything was going good. Then feelings got complicated. Luckily in the end they come to their senses and they get their happy ending.
Madeline broke up with her boyfriend Harris when he had forgotten her birthday and the plans they had made, just another incident in her long relationship of disappointments with him. He was leaving town, just now telling her as he packed, and would not be available for their dinner plans. Griffin texted her to dump him, and she totally agreed. Calling Griffin to tell him she had done just that, he carried the phone to his bar and announced to all their friends that she dumped Harris – a cheer went up from everyone in the room.
Griffin and Madeline had always been best friends. They never crossed the line, though, despite recognizing the attraction. But Griffin doesn't want any relationship, preferring to play the field. When Madeline has a bit more celebration drinks than she figured on, she asks Griffin for a very special birthday present that only he can give her -- one fantastic night in his bed that she would never forget. He enthusiastically complies. But will their relationship survive the intimacy they shared? Or might they both realize what was so obvious to their friends – they love each other and were always meant to be?
These characters are so comfortable together, and their teasing banter is just perfect. Grab your copy and see if they come to the same conclusions about how they feel after the best birthday gift of the night is delivered!
R.L. Kenderson has written a 5-star book. This is the story of Madeline and Griffin. Madeline and Griffin have been friends since they were kids. Griffin owns the bar My Favorite Place and it is a place Madeline goes to a lot. When Madeline calls Griffin and tells him that she has just broken up with her boyfriend Harris. He tells her it is about time. The reason she broke up with Harris is that when she asked him to go with her on Friday night to meet her friends for her birthday. He tells her that he thought they could go out to dinner instead, just the two of them. She tells him that they are going out on Saturday. He tells her that he is going out of town Saturday instead of Sunday. She is upset that she is just getting told that he is going out of town. She tells him to forget it and he asks "Why?" She said that it was over. He asked "Didn't she want to know what he got her?" she tells him "no." When Madeline gets to the bar, Griffin asks if she is alright. She tells him she is fine. He asks "if things were still on for Friday?" When Madeline gets to the bar on Friday night, she is asked by Griffin "what she wants for her birthday?" She looks over at a couple that she saw when she walked in and she tells him that. He looks to where she is and asks "what?" She tells him the big O that makes her forget everything. She tells Griffin that she wants him to make love to her. He doesn't say anything to her so she thinks that he has rejected her. After they get to the first bar, Madeline tells him to go see if he can find anyone, and she would get the drinks. While she is waiting on the bartender, she hears a woman say something about Griffin. She looks to see who it is and it is Holly. She is someone Griffin dated for a few weeks. Holly told her friend that she wanted another chance with Griffin. Madeline walks up to Griffin and tells him she wants to go. He tells her that their friends were on the way and she said that she would text them. They go two bars down and get a table on the patio. Griffin asks her "why did we leave the other bar?" She tells him about Holly and what she said. The more Madeline thinks of what Griffin did when she told him what she did, the more she just wants to go home. They end up going back to his bar and he sits right next to her and starts playing with her. After a few minutes, she tells everyone that she is tired and going home. Griffin puts a stop to that when he tells everyone that he is going to take her up to his place and put her to bed. When they get upstairs, she is confused by what he did to her. He explained what he was thinking and they end up sleeping together. Things seem to be going well for them until Griffin has a talk with Blake, his friend. Blake tells him that friends with benefits do not do well. After his talk with Blake, Griffin starts to pull away from Madeline. She catches him in a lie and she calls him out on it. After he explains to her what happened, they come to an agreement. They will continue the way they are until one of them doesn't want to anymore, no questions asked. Griffin is at work one day and receives a call from his mother but he has his hands full and can't answer her call. She calls right back and when he returns the call, it is not his mom but someone else and he is told that his father just had a heart attack and is in the hospital. His mom gets on the phone and tells him that the doctors don't think he will make it and he needed to get to the hospital. Griffin's father does not make it and he does off the deep end. Madeline knows nothing about Griffin's father until her mother calls her and tells her. Madeline goes to Griffin's and lets herself in. Griffin is a mess when she sees him and all he wants is Madeline. They have sex and she knows that he is using her to block out feelings. She asks him "what she can do to help him?" Madeline ends up working her normal job and then working at the bar to keep it going for Griffin. It is after Griffin's father's funeral that things go downhill for Madeline and Griffin. She has been burning herself out working her job and then working at the bar. She is to have a night off from the bar but she gets a call to get down there. When she gets there, she sees Griffin in a booth with an ice pack over one eye. She asks what happened and is told that he got into a fight with a customer. She gets him upstairs and she tells him that she can't do it anymore. She tells him that she needs his help because she is exhausted from working her job for forty hours and then helping to keep his bar up and running. He tells her that he didn't ask her to help and he didn't need her help. She tells him that that is what people who love him do. She realized that she loved him and she tells him that she loved him. He tells her to get out and not to come back. She is heartbroken over this. She leaves and now she has lost her best friend and the man she loves. Blake is the one who comes and gets Griffin out of bed and tells him that he has been missing out for a month. He tells him that he left his mother alone for Christmas and kicked Madeline to the curb. Blake tells him that it was a good thing that Madeline loved him and makes sure someone was there to take care of his bar and to pay his bills. Blake takes him to a church and a support group. Madeline is at Christina and Tony's wedding rehearsal and when she talks to Christina about her cousin replacing Griffin, she is shocked to hear Griffin's voice saying he was there. She is mad and tells Griffin that it is not the time to talk when he wants to talk to her. Before the rehearsal dinner, she leaves. Griffin is looking for her and when he can't find her, he goes to Christina and asks if she had seen her. Christina tells him that she left. Will Griffin get a chance to apologize to Madeline? Will Madeline give Griffin a second chance? This was a wonderful book and I would recommend it to anyone.

This was such a fun book. I really loved Madeline and Griffin's relationship as they were really such great friends and supported each other unconditionally. I giggled over Madeline's birthday request as it was pretty outrageous. Griffin and Mads had such a smoking hot chemistry going that was super steamy hot enough to melt your panties off. This was entertaining and enjoyable.

PLEASE---the way I cried when I got to that "I love you" scene 😭 Everything was going so well until that scene. I read this book in one sitting and it broke me.

A steamy friendship 4.5 It's a very good friend-to-lover romance, very well written. I liked the bond between Griffin and Madeline. From the first chapter we understand that their relationship will necessarily be complex with the idea of error or real trying between them. I liked the author's tone, which is at the same time light, humorous, but also at times more moving, which calls into question Madelin and Griffin's relation. I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book
2.5 ⭐️ This book was hard to get into at first. The writing was very choppy and didn’t have a readable flow to it. About of 1/3 of the way in it the readability did improve. I was introduced to this book by a social media ad, if I hadn’t been intrigued by the scene provided I most likely would not have known about this book or author. It was a quick read, ok spice, but I’ll forget about it once I get a paragraph into the next book I pick up.
Okay! So it's about time I did this. I'm so excited. RL Kenderson never disappoint! Never!
I always fall in love with characters instantly, especially when it comes to best friends to lovers kind of romance. I fell hard and fast.
One of the reasons why I was so wrapped up in Mads' and Griff was because of how open and honest their relationship was. Isn't that the point of having a best friend though? Having someone you can talk to all day everyday. About anything and everything.
Another reason was because of how their chemistry was so undeniable. I'm not one for spoilers and I hate giving away too much in my reviews. But some love is a once in a lifetime kind of love. And sometimes love like that doesn't get a second chance to right any wrongs. However, this love got that chance.
Of course everything isn't going to be rosey especially when you're playing footsie with your bestie. But like everything this is something that needs to be worked on and worked thru. There is a reason why their past relationships haven't worked out. And the reason has been right under their noses for over a decade. You don't get to be just friends without any form of curiosity blooming late at night. And I mean if the big O is the gateway to unlocking the doors they've been holding closed... Then I say why the hell not!?
They didn't fall in love the way you fall asleep, I'd say they fought it tooth and nail to the bitter tragedy and then they trudged right on. Dragging each other to the finish line. All the way to their Favorite Place...
R.L. Kenderson's My Favorite Mistake has all the ups and downs one could want, with a healthy dose of passion.
Madeline and Griffin have a long history of friendship and respect. Since their youth they've been friends, but never dated. All that changes when Madeline wants a special birthday gift from Griffin--she asks for a night of mind blowing, knee quaking sex. And Griffin delivers. After all, he can't disappoint his best friend.
However, the friends with benefits relationship is not without struggles. As the two become more intimate, the realities of the risk they are taking with their friendship becomes more clear. While neither Madeline or Griffin are without fault, things definitely take a turn for the worse when tragedy hits close to home. And it is up to the two of them to decide whether their friendship and love for each other can survive.
Kenderson does a great job creating enjoyable and realistic characters. There are pieces of Madeline in all of us, and Griffin is the perfect guy next door, turned super sexy crush. The book was a fast read, and super enjoyable. I can't wait to add more Kenderson to my book lists.

I’m so glad I gave this book a chance, because based on a few reviews I was more than a bit iffy on whether I really wanted to read it. I really did enjoy this best friends to lovers romance
Madeline and Griffin have been best friends for nearly 20 years when she asks him to give her an orgasm where she doesn’t care where she is for her 30th birthday. He more than delivers on that gift! They end up becoming friends with benefits for several months before Griffin’s dad dies unexpectedly. As a result of his grief Griffin reacts to Madeline in a hurtful way that causes a significant rift in their relationship.
The physical relationship between these two is intense and he admits that he has been attracted to her since puberty hit and has hidden it from her. Their HEA is sweet more than her telling him she loves him and him saying the equivalent of ok me too. He works on getting his life back together and getting a better handle on his grief before he approaches her to apologize. Things get a little crazy, but he certainly gets across how much he loves her.
This was a steamy friends to lovers romance that was well worth the read! I received an ARC from the author and I am voluntarily leaving a review.
Engaging, charming story. A heartwarming steamy hot friends-to-lovers romance. The storyline is plausible without a billionaire in sight, with real characters, genuine emotions and problems and reactions. Griffin and Madeline had been friends since childhood with an open, honest friendship where both could rely on the other.. What happened to change the dynamics between them during Madeline's 30th birthday party, was probably a subconscious desire, but since they had acted upon it, turns their platonic relationship into something entirely different. A very intensive attraction that neither of them wants to deny. After some dramatic tension points, they do have a HEA, since everyone knew that they belonged together. This was a well-written book with good character-description, easy-flowing, engaging storyline, with good use of vocabulary, the language and equally good editing. Not a new idea, as love is as old as we are but a very well delivered piece of reading, I am sure many readers will love.

R.L. Kenderson, ‘My Favorite Mistake: A Love Like That Novel.
As an ARC reader I received a free copy of this book and voluntarily promised an honest review. Here it is.
Rating: 4 (of 5 stars).
In general: From friends to lovers.
Main characters: - Madeline ‘Mad’ (30). She has an HR job (but that isn’t hardly mentioned in the story). At the start of the book she breaks up with her self-centered boyfriend who looks down on her friends and family.
- Griffin ‘Griff’. He’s a bar owner and Madeline’s best friend since high school.
After Mad’s break-up she’s comforted by ‘Grif’. For the first time they become ‘friends-with-benefits’. The authors then describes how the friends gradually accept their feelings for each other. It’s a bit complicated: Grif spends a lot of time in his business and both are afraid that eventual love problems could be a danger to their friendship. The plot isn’t very original but the love scenes are hot, the sassy dialogues often funny and the characters are credible and wonderful. The result is a ‘feel good’ book that - for me - was a pleasure to read and review.
What an amazing friends to lovers story this is. I loved it. So we have Griffin and Madeline who have friends since they were in school. They both tell each other everything. Madeline is just fresh out of a relationship with her birthday coming up. She celebrates it with her friends and imbibes a little too much. She tells Griffin that she wants him and it was a shock of his life. You know that when you are sneaking around it is all exciting. At the same time you are see that they are struggling with their true feelings for each other. It is hard to make a claim on one another when it is a secret. Then you have moments when someone close to you says that they don't want their child be hindered in finding their one person. Then tragedy strikes and puts things in perspective. Can they get through troubled waters? I hope so because their chemistry is explosive. I hope that you have tissues for this one. I think this one is will be placed in the favorite piles.

I can honestly say this is the best friends to lovers book I have ever read. The friendly banter, the keeper of each other's secrets, and the years of friendship is the foundation of Maddie and Griffin's relationship. For her 30th birthday, she decides she wants her best friend to fulfill a fantasy of hers. Even though he is reluctant for like a second, he agrees. And holy hotness---they have some off the wall chemistry! I love how genuine their relationship was written. They fought, they made up, they couldn't stay away from each other, they looked out for each other. It was truly like any friendship should be with the added bonus of the physical attraction. Even though they initially labeled their relationship as friends with benefits, I knew that neither one of them actually felt that way without having to be "told" in the story. The author did a wonderful job of "showing" this story as it unfolded. I couldn't put it down. Highly recommend!

This is book four in A Love Like That series. It can be read as a standalone so no worries if you haven't read any of the other books in the series. Another fun book in the series. It's funny, steamy and all around very good story. This is a friend to lover’s story.
Madeline broke up with her boyfriend day before her 30th birthday. No great loss and she feels great about it. Her family and friends are happy she's dumped the jerk. Griffin and Madeline have been best friends for years. Yep, they've both noticed an attraction but neither wants to mess up their friendship so they completely ignore it. Griffin doesn't do relationships. Madeline asks Griffin for one night in his bed. Can their relationship survive a one-night stand turned friends with benefits deal or will these two finally see what everyone around them has seen, that they're meant to be together?

Oh, it's your typical best friends with benefits type of story, but told in a way that's so wonderful that you can't help but block everything else out and read this book.
The characters were fun and unique and I enjoyed the vibe that they were all giving. Their chemistry and the way that all of the characters, not only the main characters, seemed to just mesh together so well was fantastic. The main characters were not fully dependent on each other but their lives were so intertwined after being best friends for so many years that it was almost inevitable that they would somehow find each other in other ways.
As typical for these authors, there are tough issues brought up, this time there's a death that one of the main characters needs to deal with, however, it's done in a way that's appropriate and respectful.

Madeline wants a special birthday and when her boyfriend doesn't act on it she ends things with him. Then calls her best friend to meet him at his bar to celebrate her freedom. Griffin has always thought she could do better so he was glad when she finally got rid of her boyfriend. When they got together with some of friends to celebrate her birthday things heat up between them and they end up spending the night together. This starts the beginning of things between them but neither is ready to put a label on it. However when Griffin has a family emergency its turns everything between him and Madeline into a tailspin. Will he be able to get her to give him a second chance? Can they have a future together?
This is an amazing story that will captivate you from beginning to end. This is a well written and very entertaining story. I would recommend this book to any book lover.

4 1/2 Stars! Yes! More like I expected from this author with good dual POVs that helped with the storyline that helped to humanize Griffin the hunky womanizing best friend of Madeline. Their scenes were over the top and full of eroticism, but yuk to the unprotected scene where wither of them weren’t sure of their test status. Reeked a bit of careless previous unsafe activity which lowered the sexy for me. Absolutely didn’t like the way Griffin pulled back after the fact but kudos to the author in Madeline’s quick and snarky comeback! Loved the way the author created a strong female lead that was never the victim and was strong, honest, and smart. Griffin’s realization when he messed up and the actions he took were everything I could have asked for. Super satisfying HEA for this very worthy couple!

Griffin and Madeline have been best friends forever. They've never acted on their physical attraction to each other until she requests a specific birthday gift, no strings attached. But how does one go back to just being friends when one has fallen in love with the other?
I love the easy friendship between the characters. Throughout other boyfriends and girlfriends they've always managed to stay best friends. With Griffin a workaholic running his bar and Madeline just coming out of a break up, the solution of friends with benefits is perfect. Until Madeline realized she's in love with him and tells him when he's dealing with a sudden tragedy. With Griffin pushing her away and out of his life, she has no choice but to move on with no best friend and a broken heart. When he realizes his mistake, is it too late to fix what he destroyed? A great friends to lovers book. Looking forward to reading more from this author. I am voluntarily leaving a review after being given a free copy.
I am leaving this review voluntarily after being sent a free book. Madeline and Griffin are best friends who become lovers after she asks him for orgasms on her birthday. After a brief point of awkwardness on Madeline's part the next day, things continue with what they say is friends with benefits. However feelings start to grow but everything derails when Griffin's father dies. Griffin falls apart and it takes a friend who dealt with it before to help him. In the meantime he pushes Madeline away. Madeline and his friends were helping to keep his bar and everything running while he was deep depression. When Griffin gets better, he goes to Madeline to apologize and win her back. This is helped by her still loving him. The story has some real emotional scenes in it but there is a happy ending for Madeline and Griffin.
I’m a sucker for a good friends to lovers romance. This was a sweet and sad story that ended with a great HEA.
I loved and appreciated the strong friendship that Griffin and Madeline had from the start. They were true best friends, but there were definite repressed attractions there. It was sweet how they were both there for one another and truly tried to do whatever they could to help one another.
There was grief and sadness in the storyline, and it certainly helped the depth of the characters. And while I enjoyed the story immensely, I still felt there was a little something missing. I can’t exactly explain. Maybe I felt that there were some missing details or pieces to help me see the entire picture and world created here? Nevertheless, it was a fun and passionate book and I’d read it again.
Madeline and Griffin are best friends since childhood. Madeline dumps her boyfriend two days before her birthday. Griffin asks her what she wants for her birthday and she decides she wants something for her that Griffin can give her as long as there are no strings attached. She wants him to put his skills in the bedroom to good use. He is shocked at first and then agrees in a public manner. Are you following? 🌶️
This goes exactly as you expect with a slight twist. I wanted to give it 4.5 ⭐️ because there is a situation I didn’t think would be realistic. I don’t want to give too much away, but more of a heads up for a trigger warning, there is a death in the family and the grief that follows.
This is a very quick read. A couple hours depending on your speed, a good story and a lot of spice. 4.5/5⭐️ and 5/5🌶️
