✦ childhood best friends to lovers. what an amazing trope when done well.
✦ this book felt like a warm hug. gave me lots of fuzzy feelings.
✦ mcs who actually communicate?! *gasp* shocking.
✦ both mcs - Asher and Zar - were very likeable. couldn't help but root for them as a couple.
✦ the "straight" mc being the one to do the chasing, while also getting all clingy and jealous?? absolutely amazing. usually it's the other way around in these GFY best friends to lovers books.
✦ the way Zar did not ignore his attraction to Asher and just went after him??? amazing. outstanding. world stopping. Zar is truly husband material tbh.
✦ the way these two always anticipated each other needs? so cute!!!

“trust me on this when i say, the best relationships aren’t based on romance. they’re based on friendship. married life is you hanging out with your best friend, day in, day out. if you can’t enjoy their company like you would a friend’s, then no amount of love is going to save you at the end of the day.”

✦ the friend group was amazing. so much love, support, and sweet platonic affection between them all. they were all such great side characters.
✦ speaking of side characters... the absolute king - BFG. a giant fluffy teddy bear dog, who just wants all the scritches and treats, stealing the show every time he's in a scene. 🐕
✦ cuddling. lots and lots of cuddling. hand holding. forehead kisses. so much sweetness and fluffiness, i almost couldn't resist squealing like a lunatic sometimes.
✦ i am used to a lot of these cutesy, fluffy, contemporary books ending the moment the mcs get together, but this one didn't. we got a lot of cute, domestic, coupley moments. love that.
✦ very torn between giving this 3 stars and 4 stars tbh. their relationship almost seemed too perfect sometimes if you know what i mean.
✦ if you love cute, easy to consume contemporary romances, you'll most likely love this. i was in the mood for something fluffy, and this certainly delivered.

"I've thought about it, slept on it... hasn't changed the realization any. I want you, Asher." I read nothing in his eyes but sincerity. It took my whole world for a spin. I meant that literally-it felt like my head was spinning.

aj sherwood's style of love was insanely good. it was cute, hot, heartwarming and, shockingly, for me as well. it was like the pinnacle of my family-friendly gay dreams. this was a tremendous win because the overall story was just surrounded with actual communication, domestic vibes, and positivity. refreshing to read about characters who are intellectual and ready to... communicate. to talk things out first before they jump into the next best thing. the road that would eventually lead to miscommunication or unnecessary drama was closed down immediately. another, usually its the gay best friend who pursues or longs for his straight friend but i love how in here it's the opposite. i was living for it. the way zar did all the romantics got me feelings for him as well. i was full blown swooning and all that shit. if a book got me a bit delusional, then that book is a hit. also... their height difference? the way zar has to lean down or for asher to tip his toes up to meet zar's kiss? unparalleled, unrivaled, and top tier. zar being this hot cop is nice touch. like i was drooling lmao.

This was a bit of a struggle for me to get through sadly. 😞 I was so into the first 20% or so and then I just got less and less interested as I kept reading. The conflicts ended as soon as they began. Zar pining for Asher lasted about 10 seconds! My eyes kept glazing over at the renovation talk. There was so much of it. (Okay maybe there wasn’t but this book felt so long to me and imagine my surprise when I learned it was actually relatively short🤣) I didn’t vibe with the humor either and I’ve never heard the word ‘lover’ be used so much. But this wasn’t a total wash. BFG the dog was adorable. 🥰 I loved every scene with him! I liked the friend group and I’m definitely going to keep reading the series. They gave such great advice. So many romantic comedies are full of well meaning friends who offer empty platitudes to the MC and I appreciated how thoughtful and caring this friend group was. The affection displayed between Zar and Asher was super sweet. Loved how much they cuddled even before dating.🥰 I didn’t really feel the romantic connection as much as I did the best friend connection. And the first kiss // sex scenes were such a let down. I tend to avoid small town stories because the nosiness and getting the opinions of every Bill, Tom and Harry get on my nerves and that happened here. Everyone was involved. Everyone had opinions. I am still looking forward to Cohen’s book next though!🤞😊

this is the kind of book that’ll make you audibly ‘awww’.

I loved this sooo much. It was so much more than what I expected and it gave my gooey butterlies. I will have to say that this book was very ———— *will insert word once I find a word to describe the feeling in my head*

So I think it’s not for everyone. It’s very Rom-com though, so if that’s what you’re into then I think you’ll like it

Gage studied us with an exaggerated arch of his eyebrow. “I love how he says ‘I want to sit’ and you translate that as ‘be my chair.’”

•best-friends to lovers cooked to perfection
•angst free. Drama free goodness
•gay for you done so smooth
•only the best ever friend group -secondary characters you can find
•hilarious lol moments
•nosey lil town written w/o it being annoying

Oh, I had a delicious omelet this morning.”
“Oh, really? Do tell.”
“I seasoned the eggs with sugar, oil, chocolate, even threw in some flour for texture. It was amazing. Best omelet ever.”
I I translated without effort. “So, you had cake for breakfast.”
“ Want some?”

I loved the writing here. The author made it so fun for me to read from both Zar and Asher’s pov. The sarcastic and adorable dialogues were what made me keep going.

The family drama was a bit much. I think the whole confrontation and bitch slapping moment could’ve gone a lot different? In my opinion it was completely fine with it being a spectacle so Ashers family would stop acting like the victim but I just couldn’t handle the way Zar’s mom handled it. It was funny and dramatic but the writing was written well enough for me to hear her screaming in my head.

This book contains toxic families so watch out for that. The moms name was Karen ffs.

The friends thought🤌🤌🤌 I loved them😭😭

Riggs: I just had a four-year-old girl ask me if having a penis is fun?
Gage: It has its ups and downs
Asher: Sometimes it’s a little hard
Cohen: It’s a pain in the ass
Riggs: Dammit, guys, come on. What am I supposed to say?!

Beside that this book was a win for me and in definitely checking out the rest of this series

2.5 rounded down because I'm a bitter queen.

Style of Love is objectively not a bad book. The writing is pretty good; the characters are pretty interesting; the town is described in a very nice, attractive way.

But good grief, this is not my type of book.

I am going to be very careful while writing this review, but it's my opinion, so deal. There is nothing in this book that I, a cis man, am drawn to or identify with. I am very clearly not the intended audience. And that's perfectly fine. But for me, and my taste in m/m romance, there is next to nothing realistic or particularly even cute, funny, or sexy in this book.

There are a few reasons why I think this. The gay-for-you trope is, as always in this genre, alive and well. In some books it works well; here, it makes even less sense than usual. You're telling me that you have a heterosexual man who is so comfortable with his sexuality that he is, in effect, in a long-term relationship with his (gay) best friend, a person to whom he has literally never even considered being attracted, and suddenly has a revelatory moment where, golly, it turns out that he is gay after all! And it's all cool - five pages of wondering what happened and he's comfortable with it! What??? Like, even if you wanted to place this character on the asexual spectrum, that's not how it works.

Another one of my main complaints with this book is how fetishizing it feels, and not in a sexy way. Characters literally ship this couple - and shipped them for years before they got together. In the real world, we deride shipping real people because, wait for it, they're real people and that's gross. In this book, the characters are like, "Oh gosh that's a great idea!" What??? The fetishizing doesn't stop there - the characters actively watch Asian BL dramas and drool over Asian men; a pair of women take reference photos for their BL comic strip and then post them on their Patreon for their fans to gawk over; and people place bets that a heterosexual character will turn gay. And on the note of Asian men fetishization - Park Bo Gum is mentioned in the summary yet isn't mentioned a single time in the book. Why would you do that except if you wanted to draw in the BL/Koreaboo crowd? And then there's a bizarre family drama and an utterly strange coming out scene... I just... you can't make this up.

Listen. Like I said above, I get that everyone's taste in books is different, and this book is very clearly not my type of book. That's fine. But while reading Style of Love I found myself feeling really, well, dirty, like my entire sexuality was being objectified and commodified. That is not an uncommon feeling, particularly when reading m/m romance; it's why I stopped reading the genre circa 2010 and only picked it up again over a decade of social progress later. I just think it's a shame because the writing is pretty good and I am always here for POC characters. I don't think I'll read more in this series.

Recommended if you like BL dramas; gay manga (I am not saying "b*ra" because it's a slur); gfy trope; the fetishization of sexualities; close friendship groups; size differences; house remodeling; a really cute dog.

I really did like this, but I can’t say it completely blew me away.

I liked the fluffiness of it. The way there was no unnecessary angst or miscommunication. I also really liked both Asher and Zar. And yay that there was no big gay freak-out. Zar was actually the one to pursue Asher, while Asher was afraid they would wreck their friendship. So there were a lot of things to like here.

But still… I don’t see myself re-reading this anytime soon. It just didn’t feel that deep. And I had a hard time understanding why Asher kept trying with his parents. But that could also be because I have zero experience with that sort of thing. But I would like to think I would choose myself and not try to make my family love me by letting them treat me badly.

Overall it was a very enjoyable read, just not super special.

i love any book with home reno's involved (my inner interior designer coming out) but this was a fun, sugary sweet, low relationship angst book.

i listened to the audiobook, both narrators were new to me, and they did a great job, i liked Asher's voice more, but they both did great in my opinion.

Asher and Zar being friends for over 28 years... i am shook that a photo shoot was the deciding factor to change the relationship. I don't find that as plausible, but when reading you suspend reality. haha i like Ashers character more but Zar was such a sweet friend and loved the support he gave Asher with that devil family. Ashers family all except Ryan are turds. haha they are the worst.. looking at you Karen..

I am excited to read all about these guys, in the Gay 4 Renovations company! they all shined in this book and made me pumped to read future books about them!

Looks like Cohen's book is next and I am interested to see how it will go, single dad books, if done right are one of my favorites!!

I feel bad rating this book so low, but please remember this is based on my own enjoyment level!

I found the beginning pretty decent, if not a bit dull. It was warm and cozy with extremely likable characters who gave great, mature advice.

Eventually, Zar realises he’s attracted to Asher and we get the dullest first kiss scenes and the dullest sex scenes with zero foreplay. Just straight to penetration. No discussion about how amazing anything is, no fireworks, just “I liked that.” Then I started to feel like I was kinda reading a self help book masquerading as a romance because the communication was a bit TOO good and a bit TOO forced.

Asher’s family is fucking disgusting and he didn’t even cut them off by the end, he only talked about it. Good god, why would anyone ever put themselves through that shit.

There’s lots to like though, if you’re less of an asshole than me. It’s a really cute story with cute characters, a cute setting, and cute snuggles. Oh, and a cuuuuute dog.

The epilogue isn’t even about the mains, which always drives me up the wall.

Divertido, dulce, entretenido

Childhood best friends to lovers, cheesy movie nights, morning face times, sexy photoshoots ,BL dramas and a friendship group to die for. This book had every cute thing out there and it did not disappoint !
TW : Toxic Family
.
My Rating : 4/5 🌟🌟🌟🌟
.
“Yes. I see his fears, I recognize their basis, but failure is only one possibility. All I can do is prove to Ash, step by step, that we’re good together. This is the relationship we’ve both been looking for.”
.
This book follows our main characters : Asher and Zar,as they try to overcome the emotional baggage and their feelings towards each other while a friendship gang runs loose. I absolutely loved the friendship between Asher and Zar, and the way they were always there for each other. Even though they don’t start with having feelings, the transition was quite smooth! Zar was bae and I loved his relationship with his family and his sister. Asher, with his quirky quips and a creative mind, was the perfect match for the responsible Zar. Can I also say I loved the friendship group? Like Gage, Cohen and Riggs were all amazing and their bond was solid and made me quite jealous.
.
“Then you don’t get to call him your son anymore. Love isn’t a buffet, Karen. You don’t get to pick which parts of him you’ll accept. You either love him wholly or you get out of his life.”
.
Coming to the story and character development, I think the relationship development between Asher and Zar was my favourite. Also, Asher coming to terms with his toxic family and depending on his inner circle was slightly hearbreaking. Zar and his mama was spitfires, and that scene at the fair? OMG that was one of my favourites! What I absolutely loved about this story was, it focused more on the emotional acceptance and the aftermath of getting together with someone you have loved and been friends with for decades. The author did a wonderful job with explaining things that stayed true to the character’s personalities. The only thing I wasn’t a fan of was the pacing. Even though I loved the topics the book discuss.Even though I liked it, it was still quick and we don’t get to root for them.
.
“I thought I’d take you to the bookstore and turn you loose.” Asher’s eyes went heart shaped. “You do love me.”
.
Overall, this was an adorable friends to lovers story that focuses more on the emotional acceptance, aftermath of falling for someone you’ve knows for decades, coming to terms with one’s-sexuality, amazing found family, some BL drama love, random group text conversations and some adorable moments! I want two more people to get together from the same inner circle, but let’s see!!! I can’t wait for the next book!

[I received a digital arc for an honest review]

Style of Love
is the first book in the Gay 4 Renovations series by AJ Sherwood. A sweet best friends to lovers romance. I have to note that I love AJ Sherwood's book Tags because they are always quality and reading them after I've read a book always make me smile .

Asher is the interior designer for the business he runs with his friends. His career is successful, but his love life not so much. When he's asked to do a couple's photo shoot for his employee's web comic, he asks his straight best friend Zar to do it with him. Little did either of them know that this would change their extremely close but highly Platonic friendship. Now Zar can't stop thinking of his attraction towards Asher, and he needs to convince him that taking a chance on them as boyfriends is a sure bet.

"I'd never had a man look at me like that before . Every ounce of passion, of need, of love, was directed solely at me. It was an incredibly empowering feeling."

I loved this tight nit and supportive group of friends. Asher and Zar are both sweethearts, with one of those relationships that look from the outside that they are already in a relationship. Therefore, when they go from friends to more their relationship doesn't change much at all except for the added bonus of bedroom romps. They have a ton of cute domestic scenes between them and Asher's large and lovable pup, and plenty of steamy scenes when they realize their attraction. I felt bad for how crappy and homophobic Asher's parents and brother were, he did have one supportive brother but he wasn't around enough to stop the others harsh words. Thankfully, Zar's parents, especially his mom, made up for it and loved both of them unconditionally.

Only reason I'm not giving it a higher rating is that I felt like the story just kind of ended. I don't know it ended, and I wasn't left completely satisfied . The epilogue was a bit underwhelming too, all it did was let us know that single Dad Cohen was next but nothing to grasp on and anticipate besides that fact.

Overall Style of Love is a super easy-going read, low angst, low drama. Zar , our straight friend, doesn't have an existential crises when he realizes he's sexually attracted to his bestie. I always enjoy AJ Sherwood's writing because it's so easy to get into and her characters are always likeable and charming. I know this is going to be a fun series, and I look forward to all the guys in the groups getting HEAs.

P.S. I was giddy at the Bad Buddy reference since I literally just binged the show the other day !

Tbh,I skimmed the whole book, there was humor and banter and a very few hot scenes, but that's all it was. It was a bit too sweet. I really liked the characters though, they had good communication. Asher seemed so dependent with Zar which I didn't like, didn't stick around enough to know what happened in the end.

Sadly, this is one of those that got progressively less interesting after the MCs got together. I did like the fact that the initially straight one was the one gunning for it though. Usually friends to lovers has the gay one pining for years before the other notices.

Ich bin ein großer Fan von A.J. Sherwoods Romanen.

Fluffy yet meaningful, heart-warming yet thought-provoking.

This is a best friends-to-lovers kind of romance and one of the characters is originally straight. However, to my delight, it doesn't have the usual dramas as the other books and in fact it is the straight mc Zar who pursues the gay one. That's very uncommon since most straight ones in this kind of setting are bound to question his feelings and deny everything or be afraid of coming out and so on. BUT, here there's no such thing. Zar is so considerate and kind-hearted to the point that I think he's the perfect husband material for anyone, regardless of gender. This book kinda reminds me of the Queer Eye. Same setting of four interesting homosexuals and a lot of lovely moments. Asher is also a kind soul and deserves a better family and I'm seriously beyond belated to see him happy in the arms of the man of his dreams. And don't even get me started on the side characters, they are all great except Asher's toxic family members.(The most toxic ones I've ever seen!)

This book probably has the best MCs of the year in my opinion so five stars! Looking forward to the next book!!

So Good!

Told my husband I would be AFL (Away From Life) today because a new AJ Sherwood book was out and I would be reading the hell out of it. I also told him if he needed something to contact Ruby. (Our dog. Who is deaf. I was taking no chances.)

Just finished reading and I am both giddy and sad. Giddy because it was amazing (as all AJ Sherwood books are) and sad because I read it too darn fast and have to wait for the next book. I don't do patient well. :D

Zar and Asher are a really adorable, sweet couple, with a truly fantastic circle of friends and a giant, adorkable dog. I'm leaving this book with a happy grin and a couple of new-to-me Thai dramas to watch (maybe they'll tide me over until AJ's next book comes out, but I'll probably binge them, so...yeah).

Kudos to A.J. Sherwood for her range of books. OTT funny fantasy, super awkward psychic stories (Jon), and now this. Contemporary best friends to lovers. Booooring.
Reading this book was a case of "lost interest" that came way too late for me. Really - where was this going? Only back and forth because one half of the best friends can not cope with becoming lovers?
Quite honestly: I think he is not attracted to his friend, and that's it. Probably not what the author had in mind, though ;-)

Think it was chapter 12 that I didn't like Asher for a bit. Zar did everything for him and he legged it. I did like how quickly they sorted things out and the support of the town. Still nearly wasn't enough to overpower Asher's family. With the exception of Ryan, they were toxic AF. Mostly sweet but deals with homophobia, shitty parents and domestic abuse. Favourite parts were the group chats. Looking forward to the next one.

I really wanted to see if the terrible mom got her comeuppance, but I just can't with this book anymore. It's mind-numbingly boring with the same things repeated over. And over. And over! I think it's time for me and this author to part ways, as I've DNFd at least three of her five most recent books. Did a new writer take over this writing name? It's such a puzzle why I've disliked every book she's written since the first dragon book came out with that other author.

Asher and Zar have been friends forever. Asher is gay. Zar is not. However, their friendship is like that of an old married couple. They snuggle. They look out for and after each other. Zar has even lost a few girlfriends jealous of his closeness with Asher.

Things get complicated on a photoshoot for friends when they need to act like a couple and feelings start to emerge, much to the surprise of both of them (but not to anyone else). I loved both the MCs. It was so cute how they were with each other even before they slept together and I'd have liked to see a bit more of that. And the photo shoot? Phew! 🥵

However, I never really got past being 'told' about how people should feel (about being gay, bi, whatever) and for me some of the dialogue just didn't feel realistic. As an internal monologue? Sure. But who speaks like that with their friends and just spills a whole pile of intimacies?

I know this has not been a problem for others reading this but I just felt a bit like I was getting preached at and that old 'show don't tell' phrase just kept springing to mind. And don't get me wrong, there was plenty of showing. There was also just plenty of telling and it drove me a bit batty.

Nonetheless, I really enjoyed this book and I'm looking forward to the next one.

Cute and fluffy childhood-friends-to-lovers (which is a fave trope of mine, so obviously I'm biased).
I enjoyed this more than my recent AJ Sherwood reads because the Pop culture references felt more appropriate and tuned down comparatively.

However, I'm not a fan of the female characters here.
The fangirly "fujoshi" characters felt like self-inserts and while self-aware, they left me feeling uncomfortable in how they sexualized the gay characters. Imagining the situation gender-flipped (with a lesbian pair and two leering dudes doing the photoshoot) might hammer it in.
I also think the situation with Asher's toxic family wasn't well handled. It felt a bit preachy and not very genuine in its execution, a bit like it's just repeating sage advice from the internet.
I also resent that AJ Sherwood decided to name the toxic mom "Karen", because while the Karen meme might have started out with valid criticism, I feel like it has evolved to become a misogynistic caricature and I would prefer that this meme would fade into obscurity.

I got a weird vibe from this and how women were portrait.
For example the blind date with the girl: Asher judged her for wanting a boyfriend or having a nice date, for going on it on a weekday on 11am but on the other hand he does the same and then it’s ok? Like she is boycrazy for wanting a boyfriend and he is not?
Or with his friends: they are „yaoi fangirls“ and „fujoshis“ for liking BL and gay kdrama and so on but he is not for liking the same thing?
It is subtle but we still love good double standards towards women right?

Also: this is not low on angst and needs some trigger warnings at the beginning for homophobia and domestic violence.
