After the Climate Wars, a Green Man walked out of the forest, bringing magic back to the world. But magic always has a price. Saffron is a scavenger who knows how to survive, and Jane is a Society girl who knows magic--and neither of them are sure they want to pay the price. Because a Green Jack’s mask might help the crops grow in the dry months, but it also kills whoever wears it. And now Saffron’s only choice is to wear the mask or let a small piece of magic die. And although the Directorate controls both science and magic, they can't control everything. Not anymore. But if science can't save them, and magic can't save them---how will Saffron and Jane save each other? The enigmatic Caradoc might be able to help them. If they can just get to him. Because magic is not the only thing hunting them. (Previously released as Green Jack, new material. Fantasy Romance)
Alyxandra Harvey is the author of The Cinderella Society, The Dainty Devils, The Drake Chronicles, The Witches of London, Haunting Violet and more! She likes chai lattes, tattoos, and books. Sometimes fueled by literary rage.
If you are looking for an apocalyptic fantasy novel, this book is for you.
I would agree with the other review, this story needs a lot polishing and reworking. The world building was so complex and layered that I had a really difficult time imaging where anything was taking place.
Mixing futuristic apocalypse with fantasy just doesn’t jive here. It makes the storytelling quite boring because they aren’t mixing well here.
I found spelling and grammar errors. The character development of the two MC is good, but I found myself not clicking or investing in them.
There a few sex scenes, but they don’t fall under smut. Quick scenes, but nicely done.
Received from a Goodreads giveaway. If I could give fractions of stars, I would actually give it 3.75. The main drawback is that the writing is very dense. The world building is confusing at first and hard to get through. Admittedly, I had to stop reading it and walk away from the book for awhile I was getting so lost, but I'm glad I stuck it out and finished it, because the second half of the book is great. The world that finally get's built is interesting and the action towards the end is engrossing enough that I do want to read the sequel. So, my advice, stick with it and you will be rewarded.
At the beginning I thought it was slow and the plot kind of drug along. By the middle and the end, I couldn’t put it down. It definitely ended in such a way I’m hoping it’s a series and would be very excited for a second book.
I don’t think I would classify it in the romance category at all but definitely fantasy and loved the fantasy plot and would have liked to see more into the history and what led up to the current situations. More character development would be great too. Overall the book and plot was good and I would go back and reread it for sure.
I received a free Kindle copy of this book through Goodreads.
I enjoyed this book very much. At first I had quite a bit of trouble following along with the world building. The story follows two main characters, alternating between their POVs. They are each part of different factions of the world. There's also several other groups and keeping them all straight was complicated. They are eventually all rolled together so you can see how it all works as a whole.
I was hoping there was a sequel, but if there is it isn't listed as such in Goodreads. This was quite a lot of world building to desert after one book, so I hope the author continues.
It took me a long time to get through this book. I would start it, then lose interest, then pick it back up again. This happened at least 4 times.
Story has a solid, original premise. However I found some of the character actions/dialogue unbelievable and I’m unsure of how old the characters are supposed to be.
I enjoyed the “steamier” scenes and found them well written overall.
There were quite a few grammatical errors that I overlooked but really should be fixed to help with reading flow.
In short, great premise with much promise that could have been fleshed out a bit more and made even better.
This story is so compelling that it quickly worked its way into my nightmares. The plot is completely unique, and because it's Alyxandra Harvey, it's laugh-out-loud funny at times. The problem is, it needs a lot more polish. It's riddled with errors and continuity problems that frequently threw me from the story and made it difficult to know what was going on or even who was speaking. After a round with a good editor, I think it will be pretty amazing, because I LOVE these characters.
Content warning: Mild language throughout and one non-explicit sex scene
I'M torn ... I liked the idea for this book and the characters. However, I found some sections of the plot confusing and difficult to follow. It almost seemed like parts were missing and the ending was too abrupt. Still I would read a sequel in hopes it would clarify and strengthen the plot.
I wanted to like this book. The description was enticing. When I started reading, the first thing I noticed was the number of characters introduced in the first several pages. The worldbuilding is very complex. I didn't have a clue where many events took place. I would love to see this book once it's polished.
I would like to thank Goodreads for giving me this book to read. Sadly I DNF this book on page 130. Way too many grammatical errors and spelling issues in this book. I had a hard time getting into the story. Some parts of it seemed really confusing to me. I didn’t care for the characters at all. I definitely suggest the author hire a new editor.
It took me a while to understand the world described but then everything flowed and kept moving at a good pace. Very well written. Attention getter. Good ending. Thanks for letting me read your story.

Goodreads giveaway. I like the premise and the characters introduced. However, the novel seems stilted, as if more reworking/editing was needed. I'd like to see the author take a cutthroat approach and really trim this down. It could be a great fantasy read.
Had some trouble with this. I'm going to agree with the other reviews that this story needs to be cleaned up (polish) to it. With that being said I am only giving it 2 stars.
