Honestly this is a great series. The books are engaging and provide much needed creepy and off-putting vibes. For this book I was immediately sucked in as the heroine early on spots a young kid being chased by a shadowy figure. From there her time in town spirals out of control as she adapts to small town life and her new job as an attorney. My biggest complaint is in regards to the heroine who is an absolute dumb @$$. Her people skills and judgment are way off as is proven when she gets romantic with not one but two questionable men. She has heard horrible things and yet lets there good looks and education delude her into thinking every one else is wrong. It was disappointing to see her downward spiral so badly when really she thought so highly of herself its a bit embarrassing. Overall it was a good read, fairly quick and the audio was very well done!!!

This book was a miss for me which is disappointing considering how much I enjoyed Flowers In Her Bones. It just never managed to catch my attention and I was bored through most of the story. The only reason why I didn't DNF was because I wanted to know the ending. This story is based on a true crime that happened so it makes sense for the ending to be what it was but at the same time I felt that it was predictable because I was able to figure out who did it before I got to the end. I do plan to continue on with this series because each story is different and I am enjoying the main theme of this series of how each story is based on a true crime that happened.

Another hit for JR Erickson! A spooky old mansion and a raging winter storm set the stage for an interesting paranormal mystery inspired by a true event. The characters are wonderfully flawed and believable. Iris,a new lawyer, lives with her grandmother Lola in her pink house. They both have the ability to see ghosts, an ability Iris is still coming to terms with. She has not one but 2 love interests, one a cop and the other a prosecutor. Which one is the good guy? Two locals have recently disappeared, both considered by authorities to have run off. Iris decides to look into it and finds several other disappearances over the past century. She doesn’t know what she has gotten herself into! The addition of Indian lore makes this book unique. I thoroughly enjoyed this book, as I have all of JR Erickson’s books. I look forward to reading more. Thanks to the author for giving me an advanced copy.

3.5 stars, rounded up. I like that this has a true story as its basis (though unfortunately, it's not the supernatural part), and I see you, Michigan author.

I mean, namechecking Haslett gets half a star: "Her father hadn't had the time as a single father to drive Iris four-plus hours from Haslett to Sault Ste. Marie to visit her grandmother."

But here's where I call BS - "You graduated Cooley Law School...you must've had your pick of firms". Deduct half star, as no one would say that.

Also, Jack Skelling...ton....

I enjoyed the supernatural elements of this book and the creepy gothic vibe of Skelling Hall, but I thought there would be more of a murder mystery to the story. But early on it was obvious who the killer was and I was annoyed with Iris for being so thickheaded about it. I mean, hello...the clues are right in front of your nose? And I know this is a minor issue and maybe it's just me, but I struggled with the prosecutor's name, Jack Skelling. Every time I read it, I pictured Jack Skellington from "A Nightmare Before Christmas" and it made me giggle.

While I'm absolutely devouring this author's books this wasn't my favorite of the bunch.

I really did not like Iris. She was such a cold fish. And also stupid. A stupid cold fish. Not the best combination.

I did like the murder mystery and of course the ghost aspect, but Iris pretty much ruined the story for me.

Still Falling, a troubled spirits novel, is a paranormal gem. A desolate peninsula, a cursed land, an evil spirit, and disturbing ghosts make this story a chilling read. Iris Walsh may want to deny her paranormal gift, but the ghosts will not be denied. At every turn she is pulled deeper and deeper into finding what happened to the people gone missing from the Skelling Peninsula. Unfortunately, she may not be ready to deal with the nightmare she will uncover. This story is a taste of horror with darker elements and does not disappoint. As with all of Erickson’s novels, this story was well research and very well written. I could not put it down. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

I loved this book...actually I love all of this author's books and was happy to be picked to read this one. It has mystery and twists that you can't always predict are coming. The writing flowed well and was easy to read and understand. I felt that I could not connect with Iris, though, and was surprised that didn't change as I got further through the book. I did love Iona, and got a little emotional towards the end as I felt like she could have been my own grandma, who I lost back in January. Definitely all the feels there. I have read this whole series so far, and plan to read the rest as they come out, too! Excellent reading!

If I had to summarise this book in one word it would be “underdeveloped.”

Underdeveloped characters, underdeveloped MC, underdeveloped plot, underdeveloped relationships, underdeveloped mystery, thriller and fantasy elements.
There wasn’t a single character in this book that was fleshed out enough to establish an emotional connection. The info for the backstories was there, but it failed to be delivered in a convincing, emotive way. Iris had an addiction issue, can we explore that a little bit? Iris lost her brother, can we explore the effects of that a bit more in depth? Iris can see literal ghosts!! Can we have more of that please! I was fuming at how little attention this got. Like was that just there for plot convenience? Bc it doesn’t seem like it had any other purpose bc it just wasn’t explored or given the book time it deserved. Iris as a whole was quite a selfish character with a disregard for others and regularly made stupid decisions. This would be fine if she ended up having some development towards the end, but no, she was just as unlikable at the end as at the start.
The romance (if you can even call it that) was so weak and unconvincing. I didn’t buy the rather sloppy love triangle going on and Iris’s feelings towards both of them were so surface level that I just did not care about her love interests or romantic dilemmas as I wasn’t emotionally invested whatsoever.
The plot didn’t know where it wanted to go half the time, and the sudden interest in Norlene had such a poor introduction that I genuinely didn’t realise until much later that the plot would now be revolving around her disappearance entirely. I still thought we were there to investigate the Franky mystery to be honest, not this random girl who has no connection to Iris.
Also can we PLEASE, for the love of god, talk about Andy and the rape? Like Iris gets all hot and bothered, flying off the handle (rightly so) when she discovers Andy was one of the men in the hotel room when Norlene was raped, and then he’s all like “oh no I promise I didn’t do anything, I was actually passed out from drinking too much” and she gets annoyed and doesn’t speak to him for a bit but that’s it? She doesn’t investigate, there’s no conversation to try and ascertain the truth, there’s no inner monologue where she’s at war with herself bc she wants to believe him. Honestly that pissed me off to no end! Like darling, you’re a literal lawyer, figure out the truth!
Lola was quite a nice character, but again, relationship with Iris could’ve done with more fleshing out.
I thought the writing was quite basic and wasn’t really captivating, and the story didn’t flow very naturally. The shadow man also wasn’t written in a way that provoked fear for me personally.
Ending didn’t make sense at all; bit anticlimactic. Also Iris being in a literal vehicle with the car keys and instead making the active decision to exit said vehicle to run away on foot from a murderer was the last straw for me. Thankfully for the author, or not depending on how you look at it,that was at the end bc it would’ve been an instant DNF as the stupidity is ridiculous.
In conclusion, I don’t understand the hype. The book was just bad, I’m sorry.

I had recently discovered J.R. Erickson and was intrigued by the subject matter of their books. This is the first one I have listened to, and I was not disappointed.

Elizabeth Phillips also did a phenomenal job of narrating this audiobook. Aspects of her performance will send shivers down your spine.

Iris Walsh is a young lawyer who lives in the UP of Michigan with her grandmother. After a night out, she crashes her car after seeing man being chased by a dark figure. Upon returning home, she discovers she has the gift of being able to see the dead.

Over the years, people in and around town have been going missing, including her brother.
She imbeds herself into the investigation of the disappearance of the man she saw being chased, navigating the many mysteries in the town. There are many twists and turns that will leave you guessing. Who can she trust? What is really going on here?

There is folklore mixed in with this tale, which I thoroughly enjoyed.

I will definitely be looking for more books by J.R. Erickson in the future.

I received this audiobook in exchange for an honest review.

Well, this is another great story by this author.

A beautifully haunting tale of loss and fate, for moments truly chilling but always captivating. The character of Iris is great, and when she decides that she needs to know the truth.... oh! then her determination is astonishing. And her grandmother! She's such a sweet, comforting woman. I really loved her, too.

The writing is, as always, really good, with the perfect flow between calm and tension to keep you trapped into the story.

The resolution of the mystery was completely unexpected, but once you understand what happened it makes perfect sense. And the ending is very satisfactory.

Elizabeth Phillips' narration is excellent.

Our main character, Iris, ends up crashing her car out on a deserted road. She saw a man running on the road with a dark entity behind him. Of course, she loses control, but luckily she survives. As she gets home later to talk with her grandma, we find out that Iris can sense these spirits. She and her grandmother have the gift. Iris latches onto the police investigation of the house near the crash site, to try to see what had happened. She gets drawn into the mystery of two missing boys a long time ago. Iris uses her gifts to help solve this mystery. I really loved the book.

I see dead people….

Iris has the gift as her grandma would call it but she finds it troublesome. Especially when she sees or thinks she sees something and she crashes her car. But what happens when her n some coworkers are watching the news and sees a video of last night? As an attorney she can’t be crazy what would people say about her in the small town. Can she solve the mystery about the girl following the DA around?

This was a great story, gave me the chills at times.

I received this as an arc and this is my honest and voluntary review.

Another amazing hit in JR Erickson's Troubled Spirits Collection! Filled with paranormal mystery, danger, death, murder, love, happiness and romance, this book has it all. The storyline is reasonably paced and very well written, absent the annoying typos you find in so many stories. The characters are well developed and engaging. Iris was a little hard to warm up to, but came through with flying colors by the end. Lola was wonderful. Reminded me of my own beloved grandmother. Overall, a very good read that shouldn't be missed!

I absolutely love these books. Each one is inspired by a true story and are so incredible. This book was no exception. When Iris returns to her grandmothers home, she feels safe. Then she is in a car accident because she was avoiding something in the road. There are strange things going on in the small town and the more Iris becomes involved, the crazier things get. The people she thought she could trust turn out to be those she should not have trusted. A really good mixture of folklore and mystery. A must read.

Still Falling: A Troubled Spirits Novel, mixes so many elements into the story that it becomes hard to put down. It has everything you want to hold your interest adding that bit of ghosts and scariness to the story, along with mystery and romance.

Iris lives with her grandmother, Lola and has just passed the bar exam. She's a new attorney, working for a small firm and trying to make her mark. She's direct, with a personality that can get her in trouble, meaning she doesn't mince words. Both she and her grandmother have psychic abilities--they see ghosts. Iris isn't happy about this, not at all.

Iris doesn't share this information with anyone, and tries to not see the spirits that come her way. She and Lola have suffered loss in their lives, but Lola shows Iris how to relax and be happy, in her charming, cluttered pink home that is filled with joy and wonderful cooking smells.

Iris crashes her car one night, hits a tree because she turned to see a man being chased by a shadow person. The running man is terrified and doing his best to get away. Iris is rescued from the crash by Andy, a handsome state trooper, who lives in the area and actually grew up with Iris' late brother, Frankie.

The crash and what Iris saw, takes the story on a wild ride that involves missing people and deaths. Iris does research and tries to uncover what haunts the area. She begins to see a woman ghost who is trying desperately to tell her something by leading her to Jack, the wealthy prosecutor. Jack seems haunted himself, and there is a connection between Iris and Jack, that they cannot deny. Where does this leave Andy and Iris?

The reader begins to wonder how this all ties together when Iris learns that Jack was also a friend of Frankie. It seems there are many secrets about the mansion where Jack grew up. There's a coverup that goes back generations and Iris is determined to learn about everything. This puts her in danger and she wonders who to trust and where her loyalties should lie.

I've thoroughly enjoyed the Troubled Spirits books and every time there's a new one I add it to my TBR and read it. Still Falling is book #5 in the series, although these are individual stories so could be read any order or just as a single book.

Still Falling is probably one of my favourites but only for Grandma Lola. Seriously, who couldn't want a grandma like her. Even now, thinking about her makes me smile (Having lost both my sets of grandparents I feel Grandma Lola has qualities of most peoples Grandma's). Iris wasn't someone I really loved at first. She is a straight laced, hard working, goes after what she wants woman. But it was her lack of commitment (Or wanting to commit to anything; where she was staying, boyfriends etc) as I feel her 'wrong' in the past wasn't really a reason. But any who, I warmed to her towards the end of the book and that last chapter and the 'cat' made me smile even more.

Still Falling is fast paced, it doesn't drag and I think the mystery elements of Noleen's ghost plus the missing children from the past really kept things interesting. I always find although these books are supernatural and fiction, they are also (Well part of them) based on a true story and made into something new. I love that element of truth and reading what the book (Or part of it) was based on.

Over all, Still Falling is a good read, I read this over 24 hours and couldn't wait to see where it was going and what would happen. All the Troubled Spirits book by J.R Erickson are on kindle unlimited, so free if you subscribe to the service. I've already grabbed Flowers in her Bones (Book #6) to read!!

This was the first book in the series where I did not like the main character. Iris is promiscuous, drinks too much, and doesn't pay her grandmother, Lola, (with whom she lives) enough attention. And I was FURIOUS when she fed a cat at an abandoned apartment complex and then left it there TWICE. 😾 She displayed poor judgement at every turn.

And I'm getting back on my "murmured" soap box. It's never so-and-so "said;" they "murmured." I highlighted it this time, and it was repeated TWENTY times. How does the copy editor not notice that? It's really distracting. Truly, it is ok to use "said." I'm not sure I've come across it, though.

Given all these grievances, I was prepared to rate this a 3. But 80% in, things started popping, and I'm not going to spoil it. I also liked that it was set at Christmas, which is less than a week away. J.R. Erickson is a truly gifted storyteller.

A excellent but chilling novel. The premise is fantastic; years ago, a lumber baron decided to build a mansion where the Ojibwe people warned him not to because the land was cursed. The mansion isn’t lived in now, but as a historic site, is open for tours and a Christmas Gala each year. When Iris arrives to live with her grandmother and work as an associate in a law firm, she keeps seeing a spirit; a gift passed down to her from her grandma. She meets Andy, a policeman, and Jack, the lumber baron’s descendant. She’s attracted to both of them. It’s a wonderful mystery, but so much more, since the supernatural is involved.

Pros:

Based on a true crime story
Supernatural spookiness
Naturally gifted psychic mediums
Independent, successful, sexually confident female MC
Multiple crimes and suspects
Really thrilling and "happy" ending
Romance

Cons:

Some parts were a little slow for me (but the ending was fast moving and thrilling)
The excess drinking of the female MC bothered me because she was a strong woman and it made her very weak in those instances.

Altogether, a great read and a really great narrator for the audiobook version! 4.5⭐️ rounded up to 5. I will definitely read more of this author's work.

This was a great mystery filled with personal anguish. I love how human the author made the characters. They had their faults, but you still rooted for the main character. I also loved finding out the town's hidden secrets and how connected the previous books in the series were to it. Over all it's a great mystery. I am not giving details on purpose. I feel it would ruin the haunted mystic of this book. Fans of hidden secrets, haunted building, and intertwining events will love this book. And what's great about this author is each book is fiction, but based of a true crime story.

Invested from Beginning to End

Like the last couple of books in the serious, I could not put this down. The story isn't so much paranormal, but it focuses on real life issues and how things that we can't explain can effect it.

One thing the author does that has kept me reading is making the characters relatable. These are people that are not perfect with thier own problems and things happen which they can't explain.

I will admit this book pulled at the heartstrings but that doesn't make me love it any less. I definitely recommend.

It's definitely a solid troubled spirits novel. It took me awhile to warm up to Iris, I felt like she was exceptionally good at ruining her own happiness. Very cold and cynical.

She did warm to me though, especially her relationship with her grandmother.

SPOILERS AHEAD::

When her grandma died. Ugh. My heart. I definitely could see why iris was so cold, all her loss in life. It was nice that after losing her grandma she allowed herself to grieve and then open up.
