This is a story where Rahul, Paromita, Suroma and Samaresh bisect and intersect boundaries of marriage, affair and friendship, evolving into an intriguing cocktail and mix of human relationship.
Sabarna Roy looks at a marriage, an affair, and a friendship in a very in-teresting, and a fast-paced prose and gravitates to the idea of an open marriage in a modernist setting. It is a highly enjoyable read that strikes at our prejudices and regressive thoughts in a subtle and fleeting manner. A must read. True to his style, Sabarna experiments within the format of prose writing inside a single piece of novella. A starkly visual human drama!
Sabarna Roy is Senior Vice President [Business Development] at Electrosteel Castings Limited, an author of eight Literary and three Technical bestselling books, TEDx Speaker, Champions of Change Award 2020 Winner, Times Excellence Award 2021 Winner in Indian Literature, and Golden Glory Award Winner for Critically Acclaimed Bestselling Author of the Year 2021. Sabarna Roy has been awarded the Right Choice Awards for Author of Eminence 2022. Sabarna Roy has been selected among the India Today Group: Icons of India. Presently, he is writing his ninth Literary work: an epistolary novel, which is likely to be published in the winter of 2022/23.
This book by Sabarna Roy emphasizes the significance of honesty needed in marriage & the family affected. Marriages in India are too holy & any flings or friendships with the opposite sex are usually concealed from the better half, thinking that they might not be understanding enough. The novel circles around a couple, Rahul & Paromita & their respective extra-marital liaisons, Suroma & Samaresh. The account is quick & crispy; with only 93 pages, the writer questions upfront the age-old ideas of matrimony observed in Indian culture.
This story is modern fiction with a striking interpretation of affairs & their impacts. I have never read such fierce issues questioned so well, particularly in our nation.
The idea of Happily Ever After is to each his own. But discovering joy beyond marriage with your partner being alright about it is something I am certain no one has ever heard of before in our times. But that said, times & individuals are transforming & this honesty is shortly going to be a part of our lives & perhaps for the advancement of society. In our community, once wedded, you are with that individual & that's that. Not falling in love with somebody else might be valid for maximum individuals; however, some still encounter adoration outside wedlock & their senses are all tumultuous. That's what the author has described in this narrative.
Overall, I felt this book to be a brief & delightful read that can be completed in a couple of hours in only one sitting but then has you pondering your days ahead.
❤️BOOK REVIEW 📚❤️ TITLE : A MARRIAGE, AN AFFAIR AND A FRIENDSHIP AUTHOR : SABARNA ROY Publication : Leadstart INKSTATE Genre : Contemporary Fiction Format : Paperback Pages : 90
I liked this book written on the relationships of today's modern era in many ways. Things written in small chapters and conversations give a feeling of a story around us. The talks between Rahul and Paromita are the most interesting in the entire book and fully embodies the relationship between any husband and wife. The story becomes more interesting when a woman named Suroma wants a child from Rahul, she only wants a child from Rahul, she doesn't have to make Rahul as a husband or anything. Paromita does not like this thing at all, but after thinking a little more carefully she starts to understand Suroma's perspective. Why did Suroma want this? What does Paromita decide in the midst of this ongoing turmoil between relationships? All the questions are answered in this wonderfully narrated book.
The characters are well crafted throughout the book and the author is to be commended for this. After reading this book I would not be surprised if a film is made on this book in Bollywood too. The reason is very clear that the way the author has written the book, it seems that you are not reading the book, but the whole incident is happening in front of your eyes. In this 90 pages book, you will get the privilege of seeing all the emotions going on inside the characters and you will definitely feel yourself connected to Suroma at the end of the story. This story woven into the fabric of relationships introduces us to these new ideas of today. This has been one of my most unique books in this passing year. This book is a great example in the category of contemporary drama. Great perspective along with being fairly easy to read and understand. I hope that I will get to read more such interesting and creative books by the author in future. Happy Reading.😊
Being a contemporary fiction, this book is very well written and plotted with the social concepts. The fact that the book is really unique with really unique theme, it made this book worth picking.
The story revolves around the couple who aims at changing the social norms and boundaries that are bound in a marriage. The storyline is really engaging and thought provoking.
I feel that this book not only conveys the story and lesson but it also aims at triggering and touching a very sensitive topic that is really common in this era.
I really admire the work of the author and i have read all book of Sabarna sir which really made me build very high expectations from this book. And as usual, this book didn't fail me at all.
The couple Rahul and Paromita have been married for long years and have two sons Ratul and Proloy.
Samaresh is a doctor and a friend of Rahul and Paromita. He is also can be said well-wisher of Paromita to whom shand he guides her.
Suroma is an emotionally and financially independent woman who works with Rahul. She puts forth an unconventional proposal of having a child with Rahul and he accepts. This acceptance of this proposal by Rahul shakes his marital life.
It's a short story with 93 pages that covers the relationship and emotions conspicuously 😀. The idea of an open marriage has been portrayed very well😊. Everyone needs a friend like Samaresh in life 😍. "A friend in need is a friend indeed”. Moreover, Suroma is clear in what she wants. I loved both the characters in this book❤️. The language is easy and the narration is good😀.
Marriage is a strange relationship that needs to be nurtured a lot. Patience, trust, love, respect, freedom, responsibility is needed for fruitful marriage 😍. It strikes our rigid thoughts in a nuanced manner.
Favourite:
Was she always waiting for this opportunity? Is it jealousy I feel? Is it entitlement – that a man can do whatever he want, but she has to remain true to societal expectations? Is it just social conditioning?”
I appreciate the author for this wonderful book 😀. Recommended for adult readers with open-mindedness.
'A Marriage, An Affair, and a Friendship,' by Sabarna Roy, is a work that will smash the conventional prejudices that we have created in our imaginations about this issue, as well as be a terrific eye-opener to disentangle all the misconceptions around it.
Based on the lives of four people, Rahul, Paromita, Suroma, and Samaresh, this is a fast-paced novel that is a fantastic attempt by the author to counteract the backward thinking and preconceived beliefs that have been prevalent in our society.
As previously said, because the book deals with a topic that is not readily accepted by everyone, only those with an open mind should give this book a try, as it has several situations where some issues are presented in a very casual manner.
Happily Ever After is an expression of love that has a term of context and distinct meaning for each and every individual. What one someone views about what his concept of “or thought about happily ever after should be may not be the same as what another person thinks.
From the opening page of the book, there were so many various things happening that just takes us to many scenarios and there isn't a dull time insight. The verbal delivery and interaction between the protagonists hook you immediately in.
I enjoyed learning about all of the characters and thought that, although being a short book, the storylines of all four of our protagonists were well-developed.
Before talking about the book,I would like to ask a question, what exactly is right and wrong? I mean who decides what is right and what is wrong to do in our society? Okay let me change the question now, what exactly is society? I believe being right or wrong nowadays,is based on how many supports you get on your deed. Its the game of majority and minority. If you are doing something right and the majority is still not supportive, you are wrong for the society, whether you want to start something unique or you want to be in an open marriage relationship,or you want to be in a live in relationship without getting married. Nevermind, that is just my opinion.
"A marriage,an affair and a friendship",by Sabarna Roy is a short read but the impacts it creates in one's mind,is huge. The story revolved around a happy couple named Rahul and Paromita, everything was just perfect for them, until another character named Suroma enters in their life, with a proposal for Rahul. She wanted to have a child with Rahul, without marrying him or without giving the responsibility of a father to Rahul, she just wanted a child with him, nothing else, no twists. Now what will Paromita do? Will Rahul accept Suroma's proposal?
The author has tried to make us understand, just one single ethic, and that is,only a couple in marriage can create their own new norms. No society deserves to create rules for someone's marriage life. In my opinion,it is something very unique and thoughtful.
Please make sure to check this out,if you want to see another perspective of marriage and friendship.
This is a contemporary fiction with an amazing blend of different ideas and social concepts in it. The book focuses on the characters named Rahul, Paromita, Suroma and Samaresh mainly and their relationship with each other. Rahul and Paromita were leading a happy and prosperous life. They were living like a happy pair until more characters got involved in their life. The boundaries of their relationship expanded and it was modified from the old concept to the one belonging to the modern society. Both started spending time but as per their own terms. They met new people and their interactions lead to new phases of life. The plot mainly focuses on the development of the lead characters and their relationship with the other characters involved in the book. It's is the reflection of reality of the current generation of the society. The old norms are being reconstructed as per the needs of the generation. The author has beautifully penned down a take which gives the reader a scope to think and analyse the characters of the plot and even the concept of the book. This is one of those books which make the reader think a while to see through the vision of the author. It's definitely worth reading once. The author has layered the book nicely with the reflection of reality and several human emotions. The contrasting characters involved in the plot kept me hooked till the end. The characters involved in the book are well potraited by the author to let the reader understand and reconnect with the characters. Each character has been given sufficient scope to contribute to the plot. The language used is lucid. The narration of the book is kept simple and easy making it a comfortable read for all the readers.
Happily Ever After is a sentiment that has different and distinct meaning for each and every single individual. What one person thinks about what his idea or thought about happily ever after should be may not be the same for another particular person.
Usually, as a general consensus, we might feel that Happily Ever After for any couple pertains to when they fall in love with each other, get married and start their family together, all the while promising to be there for each other for the rest of their life.
However, ‘A Marriage, An Affair and A Friendship’ by author Sabarna Roy is a book that will break the general stereotypes which we have created in our minds regarding this topic as well as it is a great eye opener to untangle all the myths related to it.
Based on the lives of four individuals, namely Rahul, Paromita, Suroma and Samaresh, this is a fast paced story which is a great attempt by the author against the regressive thinking and the pre conceived notions that have been prevailing in our society.
As mentioned, since the book deals with a topic that is not much easily acceptable by everyone, so only those with an open mind should give this book a try as it has some instances where certain topics are put forth in a very casual manner.
Right from the first page of the book, there were so many different things which were happening that just takes us to multiple scenarios and there is a not a dull moment whatsoever. The story grips you right in from the dialogue delivery and the conversation between the protagonists.
I liked reading about all the characters, and felt like even though it was a short read, the stories of all four of our protagonists were nicely characterized, hence I am going to give this FIVE STARS ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
A Marriage, an Affair and a Friendship by Sabarna Roy • Pages- 96 • Every relationship, every marriage reaches a point when it becomes stagnant. Sometimes the realisation about it dawns on the people suddenly or they become aware of it a little at a time. What the people do then depends on their personalities, and the results vary relationship to relationship. • This is the story of Rahul and Paromita- a "happily" Married couple in their 50s. Rahul receives a proposition from Suroma- a young woman who knows what she wants. And Rahul wavers, new possibilities about his relationship open up. He brings it up to his wife Paromita, what happens next ends up putting their family in a turmoil. • I love how the story doesn't have a specific ending. Open marriages have always been a thing, but how successful they are depends on the people involved. We're living in a time where monogamy is considered overrated but it's still the safe choice. • My ratings- 4/5 stars. An interesting read. It's a short book and it covers the emotions of each character very well. •
Have the feelings which lie inside you ever witnessed a strange wave after a person you love, raises the decibel of his voice for the first time? At times, when in love or between the strings of a good old friend, a crisis arises and makes one slip into misery in a relationship.
Sabarna Roy being a poet for ages, has made sure of keeping up the hype around the book, quite intact and commendable.
This book isn't based on some sort of argument or a breakup like those regular tales where things go haywire. Instead, this book has something quite wonderful to offer as the tales narrated are all estranged with the purity of love just the way the cover of the book appears to be.
One knows when the poet figure/ author of the book speaks up. After coming across several of his works on poetry and seminars, I've seen how versatile each of his pieces has been in terms of a set of words used or the plotline used to deliver a simple poem with an in-depth story to witness.
This one's a book with a tale narrated with the poetic touch as the beginning is more than just enough to melt the heart down.
The book starts on a usual note with the beginning chapter titled under Meeting Over Coffee where the reader gets to notice how a simple saying is decorated and built up into an in-depth chapter that delivers a tale of its own. It demands more than just efforts from one when it's about explaining something unheard of before.
The characterization and portrayal of the characters named Paromita and Rahul were showcased magnificently which at the end, also made me relate to it. It was what I found relatable and interesting indeed. I could trace down a few flaws in the read when the narration was made in a longer than required elaborated manner although the story was captivating and connectable and the book as short as ninety pages.
The length of the book is held up in short expected length whereas the plotline on which the story and the division like chapters are lined up, were all fun reading and worth the acknowledgement. I found the chapters based on the title from eighth to tenth where the author speaks of the story intriguingly based on the title of a marriage and....🌸
I have read 2-3 books from Sabarna Roy and anyone who's familiar with his work knows that he has a very special, unique writing style with magnetic narrative that leaves a lasting impression, and let me tell you 'A Marriage an Affair and a Friendship' was by far the best I read.
Rahul has a successful career and a happy marriage, but when a journalist Suroma approaches him with an unconventional proposal. it changes the everything between him and his wife Paromita. The married couple Rahul, and Paromita were so well written along with Suroma and Samaresh. They all fit together somehow. The tale was so profoundly crafted that even though I didn't agree with the characters I did feel they weren't wrong as well.
The book delves deep into the complexities of human desires, marriage, and relationships. It pushes back on societal norms about marriage. At first I didn't like Rahul, I honestly loathed him for ruining his perfectly happy marriage, but then as the story progresses, the pieces of story comes together forming a scenario that gives a raw, honest portrayal of complexity of emotional needs and deep desires. It was a powerful read, with mesmerizing prose that's subtly infused with many thought-provoking dilemmas.
I honestly found this book to be Uniquely Revelatory, by means of powerful storytelling about error prone characters. Sabarna Roy has written a both profound and entertaining tale that I loved wholeheartedly.
The book marriage, an affair, and a friendship is an author's take on the marriage between Rahul and Paromita and how Suroma and Samaresh come into the picture.
The book me leans towards a wild or I must say opened a new perspective towards marriage. When I started reading the book, I was confused with who is who in the book and their relationship, but as it progressed l got clarity on that. The author has used Rahul and Paromita's kids to show how they react to the situation happening around them. This book is has a unique story. Loved the character of Samaresh, Mellow, yet quite shy in love, and when he speaks the other person will quiet down. Though the author made him a side character he had an equal role in their lives.
When I talk about the narrative it's quite simple and the theme for the book is quite modern. There are certain parts where the scene is narrated theatrically, and others like a story. It would have been good if the author mentioned in the title who is narrating the part of the story.
When I crossed 50% of the book, I was hooked with the story, and somewhere down the line, I had predicted the move as per the title, which if it happened, would have loved the book more than I did. Also didn't like the way it ended as the author had left the ending for the reader's imagination.
A Marriage, An Affair and A Friendship by Sabarna Roy is definitely a different kind of story. Sabarna managed to pull off a sparsely discussed topic to the limelight. Open marriages and loose relationship are topics that are put forth in this book. I really enjoyed the story and the narration is well organised.
The story is about Rahul, Paromita, Suroma and Sumaresh. Rahul and Paromita is leading a normal life with two kids, the pace of the story shifts soon after Suroma's proposal. Suroma is an interesting character, independent in all ways. Suroma is portrayed as a strong character who possess idea of what she want to do in her life.
Freedom to make decision is lacking in everyone's life. Our judgement and decision depends on many factors which include family, job, partner, society and so on. Even if we are clear on what we should do with our life we cannot choose an answer. Rahul also faced such a situation where he was judged even by his own children.
I liked how the story progressed and the multiple POV presented in the story. I enjoyed Sabarna Roy's work, looking forward to read other works as well.
This book was amazing, I randomly picked it as I love the author. Author Sabarna Roy has included some unexceptional aspects of life.. even though it is tough sometimes we have face it, may be we are alone. So so nice to read. Very interesting narrative.
As a reader of all the book of the author, what sounds interesting is that none of his books will look similar. Uniqueness is the main thing of the author.
The book has some incident s that really touched my heart and indeed this is heart filling one. Don't hesitate to pick this read. This is really astonishing. The author's name is enough. There was nothing predictive. The narration flows and the journey is quite easy.
"Today, a strange restlessness propels you from your chair and leads you down five floors to a coffee shop you have only seen while being driven to work."
Unlike other books, the book begins by conveying the little little matters to the reader and a fine narrative. The book is not lagging and that's the best positive the descriptive parts are also.
As a book lover I can say the books of Sabarna Roy is literally an asset to the literally pool.
Sabarna Roy at his finest, perhaps! I've read just one of his previous work (Pentacles) and I was in awe of his writing, so I had to pick this one up. And he has written this masterpiece of a prose in less than 90 pages. He has a unique style of writing, which is really appreciable and distinctive.
This is the story of the relationships between four characters- Rahul, Paromita, Suroma and Samaresh. As the title suggests, the author here talks about a marriage, an affair and a friendship among the protagonists.
The story begins with Suroma meeting Rahul, a man married to Paromita, over coffee and asking him to be the father of her child. The lives of these people are about to change, subject to Rahul's decision. The ending leaves the reader wanting more, or with a great deal to think about. It's a weird story talking about marital bounds and constraints. It's a confusing and unorthodox plot and the book has well-written characters, with the theme of open marriage. I'm glad that the book wasn't stretched much. The idea is uncommon, uncomfortable but relevant, therefore the book is also relevant to the present generation. The book cover is absolutely pretty, I must say.
Before getting into the story I would like to appreciate the author for taking a very unique approach , it really helps in providing authenticity to the book. We all know the norms of marriage in Indian society , traditionally when two people got married they were expected to stay together forever and even the idea of a third person between the two was considered a taboo. The author has written the story with a modernistic mindset , the four main protagonists are Rahul , Paromita , Suroma and Samaresh. Suroma wants a kid from Rahul and Rahul’s married to Paromita , seems complicated and twisted doesn’t it? I bet you might have already formed an opinion on the book but let me tell you it is not what you would expect. It is a story tied with humour , friendships , love , difference of opinion , mutual respect and what not. As a millennial with an open mind I genuinely enjoyed the book. It was a very engaging read I think we need more books like this so we can welcome ideas which goes against the generational b.s. that has been fed to us cause keeping yourself happy is the goal , you’re not incharge of keeping the society happy and you are in charge of your own happy ending. I would definitely recommend anyone reading this review to go get a copy , it was a good read.
Book Name -A MARRIAGE,AN AFFAIR, AND A Sabarna RoyFRIENDSHIP Genre – Contemporary fiction
Pages count-91
Author- Sabarna Roy
I have been wondering throughout the novel What is a perfect marriage then?
If a man wants to have his child with another woman. Is it acceptable in relationship?
What do we call a man if he is having relationship with other woman? AN AFFAIR?
Well my perspective towards these questions absolutely changed after reading this novel..
Synopsis
The story revolves around Rahul ,paromita, Suroma and Samaresh. Speaking of Rahul and Paromita, impeccably conjoined to each other for ages. But a storm hit them hard one day into their lives and everything collapsed their family.
Suroma, a modern and passionate woman ran into Rahul, a technocrat, creative, successful man at the coffee bar again , expressed her wish to have a baby with him but with no strings attached.
Rahul decided to transgress the limitation of marriage set by our bourgeoisie conventions and conveyed his wish to his wife, Paromita, and left her nonplussed. She went to their common friend, Samresh, doctor babu to share her feelings but she was ambushed with his views on her.
What do I love the most?
The author perfectly lays out the MOVE ON concept in his novel. People are free to choose their choice, act upon them and definitely, they are them to bear upon the consequences, whether good or bad. I really love the author’s insight on marriage, affair, and friendship. How simply and calmly, its characters expressed their feelings to each other. Sabarna Roy penned out the modern woman, she can earn and raise a child, single-handedly.
His Writing Style
I really enjoyed the first and third-person conversation, beautifully penned down. Loved it.
My rating: 4/5 Rahul and Paromita have been married for a long time and even have two children. One day, Suroma, a work associate of Rahul puts forth an unconventional proposition. Its acceptance by Rahul changes the course of all their lives.
What I liked about the book: ->It's a short book that covers the emotions of each character very well. -> The story doesn't have a specific ending and is left open to interpretation. -> The narrative is not linear. Some chapters are told in the first person, some in the third person, and a few in the form of a drama scene. This makes the reading quite unusual and interesting. -> The character of Suroma is quite inspiring. We can all learn a thing or two from her.
What I did not like about the book: -> I felt that Rahul and Suroma's story was given more limelight than Paromita and Samaresh's. I really liked Samaresh's character and would have loved to read more about him.
Quotable quotes: ->Every woman knows when a man is interested in her but falls woefully short of words when he confesses it. -> There is more to life than rats and races. -> The household help are like doctors: they know the temperature of the patient by the sound of their silence. -> Nobody said life was easy and easy is not something one should be looking for.
Since older times, we have seen marriage has been consider in a convention bond wherein both individuals stay together for each other. The bond is made with respect, emotion and compassion all from both. While we have seen marriage like this since long and consider this as a closed relationship. But the author has took a modern take on the bond of marriage. The author has talked about the marriage amongst Rahul, Paromita, Suroma and Samaresh. The story has been weaved between two couples Rahul & Paomita and Suroma & Samaresh. They all were living blissful life with each other. All lives get intertwined when Suroma approached Rahul that she needs a kid from Suroma but don’t get to married with him. How this thing changed entire perspective of marriage towards each other and how the horizon of marriage increases. I had loved the concept of the marriage which has not kept to its conventional norms but took a shift of base of marriage. The take of the author is quite novel and I had not read this earlier in any book. Therefore, I would recommend this book to everyone if you are looking something new to read about.
The language is indeed good and narration has been kept crisp. The author has wrapped the book under 100 pages along with commendable articulation through out.
Book Review- A Marriage, an Affair and a Friendship...
🔹Experiencing our existence with someone we cherish is extremely riveting. They stand by each other in discussing, dealing, giggling, hardships, formulating proposals and protecting each other.
🔹This significant relationship formulates every monotonous fact of day to day life that appears like an incredible occurrence for affection either it is a relationship or it is a friend zone.
🔹This novel is all about several views of a connection whether it can be matrimony or deception or a partnership.
🔹The protagonist of fiction is Paromita, Suroma, Samerash and Rahul. When all of them entwine the barriers of a relationship, a liaison and friends are perfectly covered by a writer.
🔹A writer has emphasised an intention of a forthcoming relationship. It shows affection occurs when one has no reason for preferring, the most remarkably unlikely marriages and unusual connections.
🔹Here, alliances rely on faith. Even in the formal affairs of vitality, in devotion, relationship and friendship, how limited safety have when we trust our satisfaction in someone's hands.
🔹The tale skilfully centralizes several points accentuating the present cases of the community, for instance, diplomatic relations criteria, matrimonial captivity and strings of belief while handling the theories of crossing the marital boundaries and smashing from the institutionalised standards of marriage.
🔹it's a short read and easy to comprehend, most importantly, you will enjoy reading.
🔹undoubtedly, the cover of the book is elegant. Furthermore, poems are cherry on a cake, which is portrayed so beautifully that, it will touch your emotions.
🔹Quotes which triggered me:
-Every woman knows when a man is interested in her but falls woefully short of words when he confesses it.
-Nobody said life was easy and easy is not something one should be looking for.
-The household help is like doctors: they know the temperature of the patient by the sound of their silence.
'A Marriage, An Affair And A Friendship' is a novel surrounding the married life of a couple and the unexpected fate of their life. The story focuses on four main characters Paromita, Rahul, Suroma and Samaresh.
Paromita and Rahul were living a happy married life along with their two children. But then Suroma's unexpected proposal to Rahul changed their lives. Suroma wants to have a child with Rahul, but she doesn't want him to be a dutiful father or look after her. What will happen next?
This novel surely had an unexpected happening. It was a different kind of story which we readers may not have come across. But still, I must say it was an interesting one. The story was hard hitting, and the emotions were well expressed. I definitely recommend this book if you wish to read something new.
Rahul and Paromita are living a happy life with successful careers and two sons until one fateful day when Suroma made a daring and unconventional offer to Rahul which has the potential to change the lives of all of them.
First of all, the theme is unique and powerful. It's daring, unconventional by all means as it can redefine the relationships which we are conditioned to see a particular way. This book will leave you rethink your outlook towards life and relationships. A thought provoking book that will challenge your beliefs, and will leave you thinking and analyzing the whole thing thing by yourself because guess what, the story is open ended and left on your perception!
I loved all the characters, they are unique in their own ways. Suroma's character is quite inspirational. Narration is smooth too, it's perfectly paced and doesn't feel boring anywhere.
This is a very short book and can be completed in a single sitting. The language is lucid yet impactful. The author has left an impact in a very few pages. I wish there was more about Paromita and Samaresh as the story was less focused on them. Other than that, it's an amazing and unique piece of writing and I'd like to recommend it to all the adults out there. This book is worth your time.
This story explores the unconventional concept of open marriage in a crisp way. Rahul has been married to Paromita for years. They check all the boxes for a 'successful marriage' - great careers, independent children and all. It all changes when Suroma, a successful journalist who wants to be a single mom, chooses Rahul to be the father of her child.
This novella gives you much to think about. It's short and written in a precise manner and is so engrossing, you can finish it in one sitting! It makes readers think about the traditional notions of marriage and the stigma and prejudices around open relationships. The friction that these changes can bring in a family is also portrayed well.
The way the book is written is exceptional! There are chapters in third person, second person and also in the form of a play. There's also beautiful poetry and songs. The ending is kind of vague, and readers are free to form their own ideas.
I don't know what to think of the concept explained here. I don't stand against it, those who opt this path are free to and should be free to. I believe in that, letting people do whatever they want in their lives. Rethink. Recalibrate. That's what this book urges it's readers to do.
The book beautifully captures all four people's life and celebrates the evolution of relationships. In fact, a large part of the book relies on an over-the-top approach that actually serves it well in the bits where its protagonists go all out to show the world how a modern marriage works.
It has multiple background stories that come up with one of the diversified novel. It is simply unique to keep me glued to the book. In fact it is completely twisted and at the core, the book is a domestic noir.
The choice of the words and emotions, all the characters carried, are so profound, powerful and natural.
The book is much like its characters, just like life itself. It shows us that there is grey in between the black and white that truly defines our lives.
Once upon a time, there was a clear and conventional progression of couples to move through a relationship; they date, get engaged and get married. Over time, society evolved, so the traditional method of relationships also changed. If both partners are on board, there is no order and a fixed way to get committed to each other.
A marriage, an affair, and a friendship by Sabarna Roy is a contemporary fiction that reflects modern society's picture through the story of four characters, Rahul, Promita, Suroma, and Smaresh. The four decided to challenge the social norms for marriage, friendship, and affairs. Rahul and Promita, a married couple, portray the pros and cons of their choices in building a life together. Will the choices they make enhance or hurt their relationship.
Their story explores the inner vent of open marriage and true friendship. Wrapped with humor and amusing writing, Sabarna portrays the protagonists' profound emotions, behavior, and logic. All the characters feel realistic, making you think with their vivacious idiosyncrasies throughout the book. The story is told from different POV's first, second, and third person.
The topic discussed in the story is sensitive and will have many perceptions. However, the author handled the issue very well, without declaring any conclusion, and left the reader's mind in a state of thinking and pondering over many questions regarding lifestyle choices and, most importantly, the institution of marriage.
Overall, it is a short and thoughtful book. I am looking forward to reading more of his work.
Beginning with the look of the book, it's really beautiful. A cute little butterfly in different colors on a plain background. The title is just apt and justifies the storyline addressed in the book.
There are four main characters in the book, out of which two hold primary positions and two secondary positions. Rahul and Paromita are the primary characters who are a happy couple and are leading happy life. Then the secondary characters, Suroma and Samaresh enter into the lives of Rahul and Paromita. And here are two more characters, Proloy and Ratul who are the kids of this couple and have a crucial impact on their lives due to the decisions of the couple.
The storyline is a very impressive plot with a story set about a happy couple with two sons. Then Suroma comes into their lives with an expectation of having a baby with Rahul but not to have him as her life partner. Sounds different, right? This is the plot set up by the author which takes different turns over time. The traditional definition of marriage is tried to be broken and converted into a more modern definition with open boundaries.
The author has shared a different perspective to a common theme. I personally enjoyed how the narration was flowing in a smooth flow, the writing clear and easy to understand, and the impressive character development. Overall this is a unique read, engaging and thrilling. I recommend this for people who can take a different perspective with positive approach.
Another Sabarna Roy book story which was interesting and highlight some taboo topics. The story revolves around Rahul and paromita, a happily married couple. But when Rahul meets Suroma, a journalist, and learns that she wants him to only father her child with no legal relationship between them, it creates a rift between Rahul and ha wife.
For Paromita this idea was absurd and what made her really mad was that Rahul was actually considering this idea. Paromita Meets her old friend and shares everything with him and later on realizes that he like her.
The situation gets more and more chaotic and complicated. Author has done a great job in talking about the taboos.
Characterization is done well. The book is written in Lucid language and describes Suroma's perspective and Paromita's inner battle. It's a must read! Title is apt and goes well with the story.
As its title suggests, the book is based on the trio of married affairs and friendship respectively. The novella takes its roots from human nature, relationships, psyche, and much more about emotional and mental relations. I have read several books by the same author, these books follow some of them. The author is a master in portraying emotions through his characters. All the characters in this book are related to us. They are around us and inside us. The good part is that when they appear like the book in front, we feel surprised. The book is too real. Recommended to all readers.
A Marriage, An Affair and A Friendship by Sabarna Roy is a nice take on the unconventional relationship trope. Author has tried to interpret the open relationship concept, pologamy and it's impactions on their lives and people close to them.
The story revolves around Paromita and Rahul. Paromita and Rahul is living their married life like a coginitive wheel. A good family, two adult kids and both of them successful in their careers. When Rahul got presented with an opportunity to father a child by a young acquainted of his, he was taken aback.
I am a big fan of Sabarna Roy works and have read a few of them too. His writings are always has that fresh perspective and his style of writing is quite artistic too. I enjoyed how the story has both written in first POV and third POV and still it's easy to read. The book is a mixture of story and stage drama style writing and author has done well in it's execution and narration.
Story showed the different layers and emotions of person. The constant tussle between desire and wanted to what's right and guilt, compassion, the over changing needs and family intricacies and how socially minded our thought process is and often we obliged it over our own happiness. While the subject of the story is open for one's own interpretation according to beliefs and thoughts, it's a refreshing concept and well written read.
A marriage, an affair and a friendship by Sabarna Roy
A marriage, an affair and a friendship is the title of the book but in our life, things go exactly the opposite. First, we become friends, then affairs start and then it ends with marriage. Sabarna has asked a very important question here I believe. Is marriage an end? It could be the beginning of a new relationship but what about individuals who are in that relationship. Now as an old school person plot of the open marriage was a bit controversial and I was aghast by the mere mention of it but I read it still, and I am glad I did. The plot revolves around the lives of Rahul, Paromita and Suroma. Rahul and Paromita are married for 50 years, leading an ideal life. That till Suroma proposes Rahul. Sanoma is much younger than Rahul and is mature enough to handle herself and her decision. She does not want Rahul to bear any responsibility towards her she just wants them to have a child together. Paromita initially views this as eating but soon she and Rahul decide to extend their marriage.
There are so many things in this novel that made me think. Roy has od for thought. I loved the way he handled this topic. There were so many things that did not feel right to me, but opening up a dialogue is what Roy was trying to do and he succeeded in it. Nowhere does it seem childish and gross. It didn't even appear strange or weird. It just appeared to be one of those life choices that people make for themselves. The novel didn't end on a concrete end and I believe the whole ambiguity of the situation made it more relatable. I don't know how I still think about this whole scenario but I am not going to be one to judge people.
