Green? No. Color me unimpressed with this book that isn't entirely sure what it wants to be.

What is green architecture? Presumably, architecture that's light on the environment, in some way or another; and this vagueness stands at the core of the volume, which stretches from recycling to solar panels to gardens without a clear overarching structure or point.

A greenhouse made from transparent Legos? It's here. A microhome with old windows? Here, too. A school made of rammed-earth walls and bamboo roofs, built using traditional techniques? Yes. A park on top of a parking lot? Definitely, this is green. Houses on pillars, so they don't disturb the soil much? Also here.

The architects who designed these are presented in short, yet uninteresting detail: date of birth, place of graduation, date of graduation, other projects. The projects themselves are sometimes described in enough detail to understand why they're innovative; and sometimes not.

While this is a good overview of what might be considered "green" and what gimmicks one can fit into modern homes (and museums and public buildings and parks and more), it lacks unity and explanations. I was expecting a bit of a history of "green", of trends, of innovation, of movements. I got none of that; instead, all projects are haphazardly distributed through the book, in no clear order, and with little to place them in a larger context. Good for inspiration if you're already into "green" (...probably, I wouldn't know), but not amazing overall.

Written in 3 languages (English, German, French) and featuring a variety of architecture not just limited to residential spaces (think community gardens, commercial buildings, greenhouses, schools, etc.) and told mostly through photos and plans, "Green Architecture" works well as a coffee table book. There's some information on the architects (mostly about their schooling and past projects), but not enough information on all entries about what exactly makes the architecture green. This lack of depth in regards to information concerning the buildings' environmental impact makes it impossible to glean anything substantial and applicable for other architectural projects that may want to employ environmentally safe methods as well.

However, the photos are lovely, and will inspire people in regards on how to arrange, sculpt, and think about space.

Perché applicano i principi dell'architettura passiva?

Jodidio has a great taste in architecture is all I got to say. Books on architecture edited by him are always well put-together. Haven't gone wrong with this guy yet.
