As far as well-written shonen action goes, Kaiju No. 8 is far from one of the best. This volume in particular was mostly a blur of fighting against the same reoccurring enemy (Kaiju No. 9), with little emotional development save for some brief Shinomiya backstory. I was enjoying this manga in the beginning, while the setup remained unique enough to hold my attention, but as it now shifts into more of an action-heavy series, it’s blending in with a bunch of typical shonen tropes and becoming a very forgettable story.
There really is only one word to describe this volume, and that is hype. It scratches all the right shonen itches, from intense and creative action to the heartwarming (yet somewhat predictable) motivations. With moments and decisions that will impact much of what's to come, Matsumoto has, once again, written a volume with style and flare.
I'm not sure how many chapters are in this tankobon, but after volume 5 (c.43), I've read as far as chapter 55 (latest chapter in biweekly (not sure) simulrelease) with snots and tears still in my face.
This is just the best!!! Seriously. You trampled all over my feelings. Nothing but pain and action, fused together creating perfection. I can't wait to read the future chapters!! This is my new favorite, I swear! My soul is still grieving!! but hell, I'd drop this if Isao is not the cover guy. I mean, the man deserves all the respect, love, and the freaking cover for this volume. Augh, my heart really aches right now.
intense all the way through, ending on a pretty intriguing (almost cliffhanger) note. definitely enjoyable overall.
but explain to me why the dudebros in the comments have started shipping kafka and narumi. how did we got there, i did not have that on my bingo card 😭
Let me preface this review with my perspective: when it comes to shonen action, I like it as the icing on the cake. In this volume it is the icing, the cake, the place settings, and the table.
And that can work, but good lord do I ever hate Kaiju No.9 as an antagonist. Seriously. As with many ‘oh ho, here are the dozen other powers I have to counteract the eleven that you have’ villains, he started out interesting and his recurrence has made him about as engaging as a waffle iron.
It doesn’t help that his whole thing seems to be ‘you have killed me, just kidding’, which makes his general aesthetic that of that one annoying kid I used to play cops and robbers with who would constantly yell ‘you missed’ every single time.
And if you don’t like that, uh, I’m sorry, there’s nothing else in the volume. This is just a full-on fight sequence minus that aforementioned flashback that goes a few pages and then back to smashing. Not to disparage the art, which has always done good action, so that’s fine, but it’s numbing after a bit.
I found that annoying towards the end of Black Cat and lemme tell you, this sure isn’t Black Cat. My tolerance for shonen has never been super high; I can handle a couple of series at a time and even then I’d rather read Call of the Night over, say, Naruto (although early Naruto was actually pretty fun).
But keep in mind that this is completely my bias is at work. As good as the action can get here, it isn’t something I want a whole volume of. I’m not the audience, honestly, and therefore take this perspective with a grain of salt.
I wish this was still the same as it was in the first volume, which took the premise exactly as serious as it needed to, i.e. not very much. By this point it’s swung back to 95% deadly serious to 5% silly and that’s a balance I don’t care for.
3 stars - add a star if you like extended fighting sequences, I suppose. Even the very exciting revelation that Kefka’s transformations are restricted by, gasp, him not believing in himself, are straight up copied from a playbook I’ve seen done over and over.
Every time I read a new volume, I'm always reminded of how deeply I love this series! It never fails to be explosive, while also having a lot of heart!
This volume was definitely no exception!
As always, picking right back up where the previous volume ended, we're thrusted right back into this fight with Kaiju No. 9 AND THE STRESS I FELT THAT KAFKA COULD NOT TRANSFORM! OH MY GOODNESS!!!! Had to remind myself to breathe and that I didn't need to lean THAT closely to my physical volume because somehow if I got closer then things wouldn't pan out badly?! LOL!
Seriously though, that was INTENSE!!! I did love the feelings surrounding the battle though and how it helped us to not only see more into Kafka's internal struggles but Kikoru's too.
And can we just say how incredibly awesome she is?? Because she is AWESOME! I still wrestle with the fact that I didn't like her in the beginning because seeing her and Kafka's friendship in the past two volumes (though especially this one) has been one of my favorite parts of this series! I love how she was able to push and encourage him while he was also able to help cheer her on and support her. While Ichikawa is my favorite when it comes to duos with Kafka, Kikoru is a VERY close second duo!
Last volume I voiced how I didn't really like Narumi because I HATED how he said he wanted to use Kafka as a weapon. In this volume I confess that I did actually think Narumi was really cool and LOVED what we learned about him because HELLO I AM MINDBLOWN AND DIDN'T SEE THAT COMING!!
I'm definitely worried about the end, especially after seeing more of Kikoru's backstory and the declaration she made in light of Kafka not being able to transform. The final page of course ended on a cliffhanger where I once again DESPERATELY need the next volume because I don't know what I'll do otherwise!
Another extremely fantastic volume in this series! Hopefully, the release of volume seven will be a short one because I need answers!
(Also, the art was REALLY good! Honestly feel it keeps getting better and better!)
Basically one huge fight but a entertaining one at that.
Kikoru really gets to shine here, showing how badass she could be. Easily the best part of the volume and when her backup comes, it sure shows a epic moment. I also gotta say, the threat, the Kaiju, is pretty scary. The ending to this volume also gets more into a horror zone, epic, and then a cliffhanger that will no doubt make you say "Oh come the fuck on" as we all wait for the next volume.
Overall, the series continues to just be highly entertaining. I hope it continues to do so.
I started reading this on the app, then Edelweiss had it as and ARC, so I finished reading it through their page. Kafka winds up fighting Kaiju No. 9 and cannot transform, throwing a new problem at our heroes. Kaiju No. 9 features prominently through this whole volume and it's great. The stakes have never been higher, the threat has never been greater and it's going to take the entire Defense Force to contain all the kaiju outbreaks. It reaches such a fever pitch that Director General Shinomiya has to engage personally and then we get a huge twist at the end.
Brilliant installment, edge of your seat action, can't wait to see what's next.
Respite is rare in this world filled with kaiju and even more when Kafka Hibino has to prove himself or die trying. This time around, Kikoru Shinomiya gets an opportunity to show her worth as Kafka understands that there's no room for fear when the people he cares for are in danger. A nice plot twist also leads to a cliffhanger where you can only wonder if things will ever be the same anymore for the Defense Corps organization.
Kafka's insecurities led him to not believe he could transform into a Kaiju and not kill his friends and colleagues. Shinomiya reminds him who he surrounds himself with.
Great backstory of Shinomiya's family. Her mother was as badass as she is.
A thrilling plot twist and ending. I'm at the edge of my seat for what comes next.
Isao merging with Kaiju No.9 just gave me flashbacks of Sukuna and Megumi merging 😭😭😭😃😃😃😃oh the bittersweet memories, but nothing sweet about it. crying while reading this
My favorite part about this series is being able to turn off my brain for 30 mins and just read constant action. Such a nice change of pace if you’re not reading this series you are actually missing out
