Some pretty standard fights using the same running gag. Mash is funny but unfortunately his opponent here is a little flat.

Thank GOD that rabbit was ok. If it wasn't Rayne would have gone on a murderous rampage.

+++

I'm a bit torn with this volume- it was fun, as all of these books have been, and I enjoyed the creativity and humor, but this book didn't stand out at all. It started out strong with Mash and crew entering Grief Manor and being presented with a labyrinth and challenges in order to collect stars. It's simple enough: get five stars in order to unlock a chest with a cane wand, and whoever gets the wand becomes the next Divine Visionary. It's a fun concept, and I like the twist that Lévis Rosequartz used his father's influence in order to rig the competition against the competitors from Easton. I probably would have enjoyed the story more if it was just Mash and his friends managing feat after feat. I liked the scene at the beginning where he faced against the Shadow Eater, and it felt a tad bit boring that this path got thrown out after only the first one in favor of more duels.

I did like getting to see some more action from other characters, similarly to what we saw in the third and fourth volumes against the Magia Lupus. It was nice to see Lance and Dot get more action, and I particulalry enjoyed their scenes. It was funny to see Lance "Sister Lover" Crown against a Momma's boy, which was cheeky, and I thought the whack-a-moles were a nice touch to his fight. Dot is also a powerhouse, and he seems to be indestructible. His role in this volume was very similar to Finn's in volume six, but it was a nice change of pace to see him do more besides be comedic relief. He is extremely powerful in his own right, and I don't fully understand how his power works, but it's exciting nonetheless.

The fights themselves were decent, and I thought they were fun as always. I like how creative Komoto is with all the different types of magic he introduces into the series, so each fight is fresh and filled with new things. The magnetic magic that Lévis used was particularly interesting, and I also thought it was interesting to see someone use two wands, and therefore two different types of magic, simultaneously. Of coruse Mash was amazing in this, as he always does. I love the mix of fighting styles from him; classic punches, wrestling, athletic techniques, and the odd action that feels like a wild card even to Mash. I loved how his use of physical force to shape his iron wand into whatever shape he wants has come back, and I liked that the book was self aware that a lot of what Mash does defies the laws of physics.

I still find the antagonists to be the biggest issue in this volume, just like with the last one. They are too similar to one another and they have the same formula: they are introduced as being Mash's most powerful foe yet, the monologue about power and control, they fight Mash, get absolutely obliterated, and then have some sort of sad flashback that explains why they're so evil to begin with. Lévis had all the cards to being a very exciting villain- a creepy character design, unique powers with dual wands, and influence within the Bureau of Magic. Plus he had originally been an Easton student before being expelled, and I wish this relationship with his former school had been explored a bit more in this volume. There might be more to his story in the next volume, but so far he's gotten the "typical Mashle antagonist" treatment, and I assume he's going to be tossed aside like the rest because we haven't even faced Domina, who is the main contender from Walkis.

This volumes biggest issue is that there weren't enough aspects of it to make it stand out from the rest. A lot of the things present, from what the characters did, to the antagonists and conflicts, were too similar to things that had happened in the past. I wish this volume had opted to go in the direction it started- I would have loved to see Mash and his friends try to navigate different challenges in a labyrinth, and simply trashing that to go to dueling felt like a boring, predictable route. I didn't dislike this volume by any means, they're always fun reads, but I am at the point in this series where the same old, same old isn't going to work anymore. This whole series revolves around one shtick: Mash's reliance on his strength to cover the fact he can't do magic, so the rest of the series has to be varied and exciting so that it doesn't become repitive. I'm not sick of Mash's skills, but I wish there was more than just plain old fights.

*This volume is based on friendship and the concept of sacrificing for others, at least that's how I took it*
Love Mash Burnedead.
Mash doing a chokehold on a shadow eater is just top-tier.
I like the puns dude. It cracks me up how those puns easily take down Mash, hahaha.
I wish I was that good at billiards.
Mash is so gosh dang good at sports. His baseball game was on the pro level. (I wonder if there will ever be any nods to lacrosse?:)
CAN WE APPRECIATE HOW MASH STILL CALLS OUT HIS MOVES WITH MUSCLE NAMES & MAGIC TACKED ONTO THEM?!? Like everyone already knows he doesn't have magic, but Mash is just too invested now I guess, haha.
Lance thinks Charles is gross because he has a mom complex while Charles thinks Lance is completely unhinged with his sister complex is just gold. It killed me when they then started to argue like little kids about how started adoring their mom/sister first.
Happy that Lance's sister is concerned for him and wants him to have friends and commitments outside of just their sibling relationship. It's cute Lance's and Mash's bro-ship.
It makes my soul happy how much Mash's friends support and believe in him about becoming a divine visionary.
Levis betraying his buddy on the other hand hurt and was hard to see.
MASH DOING A SELF-ECHO FOR HIM STEPPING UP TO "THE PLATE" WAS HILARIOUS!!! Again, is this man a genius or just dumb, who is to say?

But I just feel bad for everyone who has to fight against Mash. They don't stand a chance...

Quotes:
- "Your just lack-magic trash, I will never treat you like a human." (said towards Mash)... well good... because he sure isn't human, have you met the dude!?! Even Mash is okay if you don't, haha.

- "But everyone knows that lying is the real jerk move. Idiot." (Mash, while pointing down) The classic Mash pointing to the ground is my favorite now.

- "Did he know his shoelaces would act as an insulator?" (Levis) Honestly my dude... I would guess 60% no & 40% yes.

- " So... you said something before about how you hadn't even broken a sweat... well... you have now." (Mash) What a savage.

Mash and his friends get involve in the Trimagicathlon. This means that this shonen manga has entered its tournament arc.

MASHLE: Magic and Muscles is a popular manga series published in Shonen Jump that follows the story of Mash Burnedead, a magicless protagonist in a world full of magic. The manga is a comedy with a vibe akin to a mashup of One Punch Man and Harry Potter. The story is set in a world where magic is everything, and those who don’t possess it are considered weak. Mash, however, is an exception to this rule. He has no magical abilities but makes up for it with his incredible physical strength. The series is known for its unique blend of humor, action, and fantasy elements, making it a must-read for fans of the genre. The series has been praised for its engaging storyline, well-developed characters, and stunning artwork. It has also been adapted into an anime series, which has been well-received by fans.

MASHLE: Magic and Muscles is a hilarious and action-packed manga that is sure to delight fans of shonen manga. The series features a lovable cast of characters, epic battles, and plenty of humor. If you're looking for fun and entertaining read, MASHLE is worth checking out!

The Trimagicathlon (triwizard tournament) is offically underway and Mash needs his friends to hold their own. Lance and Dot both jump into the fight, but it's really Dot who shows a tenacity we've never really seen before. The Innocent Zero really beat him bloody, but he knows that Mash will be there for his friends no matter what, so he stays strong for him. Mash's iron wand is still one of the funnier conceits to me as he can shape it into anything he wants, but it's almost always sports equipment.

This installment is sets up the stakes for the Tri-magic-athlon and splits most of the teams up searching for the keys needed to open a chest and win a special wand. It's almost all head-to-head fights between students from the two schools and it's plenty entertaining.

I have been enjoying this series. In this volume there is a note from the creator Hajime Komoto that states that the series is going on longer than initially projected. (Right before the beginning of Chapter 86) I find the way the story is going that it did feel that way but Komoto continues to add wrinkles and twists to keep the story moving forward and that is no easy task. To say Mashle is all out action would be the understatement of the century…but I will say that the chapters fly by, the entertainment is high, and I don’t think you need a deep explanation on what is transpiring in most chapters. That makes it harder for a review…but as a fan I can say the chapters are a joy, blend together seamlessly and keep you entertained from cover to cover.

It's six versus six as Mash and his friends compete against Walkis' best inside a mansion of dangerous traps - but when he decides they need to face their opponents head on, Lance and Dot must utilize all their power to aid him as Lévis lets loose his impressively brutal magic! Komoto ramps up the action in this exciting entry, its humour and zany battles as entertaining as ever. This is a fight that will take all sorts of creative muscling...

Mash is in a bit of a lull right now. Lately when reading chapters it's been very easy to turn my brain off and absorb the plot. The question is just how long it'll take for the next Innocent Zero arc. That's not to say that it's bad, just that I have a lot less to say about it right now than I did a couple volumes ago.

This volume was pretty standard fare for this series. I did enjoy Mash putting the equivalent of Dementor from Harry Potter in a choke hold. That was funny. However, the main bad guys of this arc are very same old same old, so this volume felt a tad repetitive. We did learn that Mash is an excellent baseball player though.

"Then I'll have to teach you... Everyone is equal before the law of muscles."

"Okay, it doesn't matter if you explain it. I still don't get it."

"Or maybe sports are just incomprehensible to you?"

Mash punching the sweat drop back up is the coolest shit. It's also neat that the battles are getting a bit longer rather than finishing in a couple chapters.

Something I look forward to while reading this series, is the bonus comics between each chapter. They are stupid, but they give a bit of relief from the terrible things that happen to these poor kids! Seriously, why can’t the villains back off for a couple months because it is back to back problems for Mash and friends.

that really shocked me. i didn’t think i would like levis that much, but with a little bit of insight to his past and what makes up his ideology, i came around. he also gains merit for recognising mash’s strength and that even though it goes against his beliefs of “power” and “winning”, mash will manage anyway, because he is an anomaly that deserves respect.

I love the character of Mash Burndead.

In this volume, Mash battles in the Trimagic-athlon against the Walkis magic school in the selection of a new Divine Visionary. Will Mash be able to overcome the magicians of Walkis and overcome their prejudice against someone like him? Someone without magic?

Thoroughly enjoyed this volume.

I love watching Dot and Lance reaffirm their love and support for Mash, it really warms my heart to see!
Dot's fight in this one felt really dangerous, it was scary! But Mash's friends are all mentally strong, if not as physically strong as Mash, and that's just as nice to see as Mash punching the bad guy's face in.

This volume has our heroe continuing his quest to become a divine visionary. In short, it is a lot of the same from the first 9 volumes. I enjoy the series, but it should be wrapped up soon. There are only so many ways Mash can overcome magic with his muscles.

Another volume where it is just a battle with a random side-villain from beginning to end. I find these to be less entertaining than the more comedy and story-driven ones but it is Mashle-still pretty enjoyable.

As we delve into the Divine Visionary competition, we get to learn more about the other schools and their students. Mash is up against his most challenging opponents yet but he is ready for the challenge. I'm excited to see where this competition goes next in the following volume.

Walkis Magic Academy vs. Easton Magic Academy. Which academy will win for the final exam? They have to obtain five keys to open a very special wand. It's up to Mash and the rest to beat students from Walkis Magic Academy or die trying.

One of my fave themes of this series is how the oppression and brainwashing starts at the top and hurts everyone. The other is how everyone reacts to how Mash deals with shit which is normally unparalleled disbelief
