Spirit: An Andrea Kelley Mystery

Rate this book
The restless ghost of a Virginia plantation slave lands archivist Andrea Kelley and her detective BFF smack in the middle of a modern-day human trafficking ring and a century old family mystery.

Aaron, the ghost haunting Louie’s Gastropub, has become the bane of archivist Andrea Kelley’s existence. She’s been blocked at every turn by the inability to communicate with him, the glacial pace of historical research just to find a starting place to look for him, and her BFF, Detective William Taka’s refusal to have anything more to do with ghosts.

But when Aaron leads her to a murder victim outside Louie’s, her desperation reaches new heights. Following a lead based on the tattered uniform Aaron sometimes wears, Andrea attracts the attention of the police, shady, finger-in-every-till-in-town businessman Dewey Sanderson, and an even larger shark cruising Charleston, WV’s underground.

With his job on the line, Taka agrees to help Andrea discover what Aaron needs from her—and what he knows about the murder. Their bond opens the door to Aaron’s past too wide, though, and Andrea suffers the sins of the past. Can she find the grit she needs to ignore the suspicions being cast at her? How about enough to survive the attentions of a killer?

Southern Gothic meets Amateur Sleuth in a speculative fiction murder mystery. Typical violence for genre. LGTBQ. Diversity. Second book in series.

I loved how this story picked up where Ghost left off. Andrea and her BFF Taka become entrenched in a new mystery, one that could cost Taka his career. Everyone becomes involved in the mystery with each player knowing something, and trying to keep secrets from friends or colleagues.

Andrea begins to see a war ghost and does her best to help him, though hearing what he needs is a problem. Being an archivist, Andrea digs into her research to see what she can find out about Aaron, the ghost. She begins to see other ghosts and each experience engrosses Andrea, taking it's toll. Trouble seems to follow Andrea, and her psychic ability, nearly lands her in jail as a suspect.

This one is full of twists, kidnappings, murder and ghosts. I love the characters, and how wonderfully they mesh together and are friends, albeit sometime enemies. The unusual relationship between Taka and Andrea makes me want more for them, yet Jimmy and Scotty are special too, so I'm not sure what I want to see there!

I hope this series continues, even though it was complicated at times with so much information and entanglements happening. The characters and their loyalty to each other, all around, was lovely and made the story hard to put down.

Excellent!

This book picks up where GHOST left off. I really enjoy the relationship of Andrea and Taka. Andrea is learning more about her ability to see ghosts as she meets Aaron, the ghost of a civil war era slave. Aaron drew Andrea’s attention to an alleyway where she discovers a dead body. Now she has to figure out what Aaron wants and how she can help him. The historical research surrounding a property and the civil war is interesting and pulls at your heart.
Trying to figure out how the dead woman fits into the puzzle, puts Andrea in the middle of a very dangerous human trafficking operation. Taka is right there with Andrea. He’s her best friend. The love and support between them is forever there. I can’t wait for the next book!

Wow! This story was worth the wait. Picking up shortly after we left off with Ghost, Andrea has a new mystery to solve.
Andrea and Taka both have people in their lives and the dynamic is interesting. There is a lot going on in this one and there is a large cast of characters. I appreciated the amount of research involved because it made many aspects come alive.
So many twists and surprises kept me guessing! Andrea's ability has also expanded and led to some great reading. I was completely sucked in. I am so invested in these characters and can't wait to see where things go from here. That ending!

Things are more than they seem

Andrea and Taka have always been close. He’s not a fan of the ghosts but he is always there to help her.
I loved this story as it was a continuation of Ghost.
It was fast paced, action packed and a little edgy. I loved how so many things in life interchange.
I would definitely recommend this book and am very much looking forward to reading the next book.

So Good!

Loved it! I feel so bad for Taka. He should apply to the state police or FBI. I sure would hate to see him start working for Dewey. Maybe he could become a P.I. or a paranormal investigator. At any rate, I can’t wait till the next book comes out!

Great storytelling by a wonderful author!

Clever characters, living and ghostly, and the historical relationships between them are the basics of this well written tale. Nothing too graphic, so this is appropriate for most readers.

Excellent Paranormal Mystery

This is the second in an excellent mystery series. The characters are complex, the plots are twisty and the story lines kept me reading late into the night! I can’t wait for the next book to see what the author comes up with!

Fun paranormal mystery

I really enjoyed this story. I'm enjoying the character development. The only negative is there are a lot of characters, and sometimes I found it hard to follow. Maybe I was tired though.

Very good accidental find while on vacation. I usually get side tracked by bad editing and low level writing, but the plot and quality kept me invested. Can’t wait for the next one!!

I was sent an advance copy of SPIRIT in exchange for an honest review. That being said, I really liked Spirit. It picks up where Ghost ended. I loved seeing Andrea and Taka back in action. I'm looking forward to the series continuing. Highly recommended and two thumbs up!
