I am an osteopathic physician who practiced internal medicine and geriatrics in Mesa, AZ for 17 years. Then I served as Dean of Midwestern University/Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine for 16 years. I have been president of the American Osteopathic Association, the American College of Osteopathic Internists and the Arizona Osteopathic Medical Association. I was the first woman to hold each of those positions. Being a doctor and a leader is what I do. Being a woman is icing on the cake!
I discovered that all my years of training to be a physician taught me important knowledge and skills, However that knowledge and those skills were not interchangeable with what is needed to be an effective leader. I have taught leadership for over 20 years and never found a good source for physician leaders, so I wrote it.I have made every mistake in the book! This book!

I usually approach books on leadership the way I do books on writing – cautiously and from a safe distance. But when the author has proven herself to be an effective leader in several prominent roles and is a DO to boot, this one caught my attention. If the author’s name is not familiar to you, it should be – she is a former COM Dean and an AOA past president (2010-2011).

The book is an easy read because its tone is familiar without being folksy or condescending. It’s like you sat down with the author for an extended personal conversation on the subject. There is a short summary of all the chapters at the beginning, which you can probably skip – after all, you’re going to want to read those chapters, and each one has a summary contained within it.

excellent resource for emerging physician leaders

This was well organized and introduced leadership principle with articulation of how well practiced skill sets of the physician translate into leadership - or not. The author has significant experience with medical practice and healthcare leadership. I found this very readable and helpful.
