Clayton is being threatened and Harriet has an uneasy relationship with her cousin
Harriet is delighted to receive an invitation from her cousin to visit for Christmas. She is anxious to have the company of another young woman her age. He cousin is in turns welcoming and off putting and she is unsure why. Clayton is being threatened and has no idea who is sending the threatening letters. He retires to his country estate to decide how to resolve this problem. When he meets Harriet at a ball he is holding he is immediately drawn to her but makes an improper advance which makes furthering his acquintance difficult.
I found Clayton to be endearing an a little shy. Harriet is very tuned in to others personalities and feelings. I thought there were some inconsistencies in the plot. Some of the things they did seemed illogical. And nobody spends that much time out in the cold snow. It can't be that romantic when your feet of freezing and your hands are icicles. Altogether entertaining and I did like Clayton and Harriet.
This story tells about Clayton, an Earl, who. Sets a merchant’s daughter, Harriet. After a rocky first meeting they come to realize they like each other but unknown to them there is someone close to one of them that is trying to separate them. Overall a nice read but it did seem just too wordy and slow for me personally. I just flipped pages when that would happen.
Too wordy, lengthy and sometimes conflicting/repetitive. Initially i remember reading that one of the main characters was not athletic and no interest in fencing only later to read him anxious to challenge a duel by swords. I tended to lose interest in reading. Earl never asked her father's permission to marry his daughter. A lot of unchaperoned encounters.
A good story about love and a man that is being extorted about a debt his father made and a young woman the daughter of a merchant liking a Earl and he her but someone wants them apart The characters are strong and determined The extended epilogue completes the story with a happy ending
Beautiful story and great characters. A good clean sweet romance and a little bit of adventure and mystery. Wonderful read. The extended epilogue including a bit of Harriet’s brother gives a touch of the family’s life. Good story.
The snail pace of this book alone is reason enough not to recommend it. I also found the characters lacking. I had to force myself to finish it. I have read over 450 ebooks this year, and I would put this in the worst 10.
The story could have been resolved with half the words. As Harriet repeated back everything Clayton expressed to her. If you can stay awake through the beginning the end is almost entertaining.
This was probably one of the hardest books for me to get through and I only stayed the distance to see who the baddie was, (not that it was worth the wait). The dialogue was extremely stilted, there was way too much repetition and the characters were not all that believable. Labourious read!
This is the story of Harriet and Clayton, and a instant attraction between them. He ask for a kiss under the kissing bough, she thought he was a scoundrel. As they spend time together, Her jealous cousins lies , brings them closer together. Thank you ♥️
