"you were the worst kind of bliss — the kind that left me lovesick for the sickest kind of love. but the best kind of misery — the kind where falling brings solace. and between those two things — bliss and misery i’m still looking for peace."
Written in poetry and prose, sheer is a collection of diary entries and musings that recounts the events of a 20 something-year-old college student over the past 3 years. Illustrated by the author each poem connects to reveal a story of melancholy, heartbreak, longing, and the strength that stems from it all.
this is a poetry book i understand. i understand wanting to be near someone and be seen as this beautiful, deserving thing and then wanting to serve them a big cosmic f*ck you that consists of you being happy and being able to be alive without them. i understand unrealistic beauty standards and finding beauty inside and outside. i understand wanting love and wanting to give love and wanting to be loved and wanting to be love. this is a book i understand. this is a book i can recommend wholeheartedly. this is a book you should read.
"The tide constantly comes and goes, but resilience stays" 5 ☆ Sheer by K.M. Simpson was my first pick for the 2024 Diverse Baseline Challenge see challenge info here. The raw emotion and vulnerability within in page and each illustration grabbed onto my heart and I was reminded of myself in so many ways, but also introduced to someone else's innermost struggles and internal thoughts in a way that I haven't experienced up until I picked up this work. As this challenge set out to do, this book challenged my worldview and forced me to think beyond my own comfort and my own experiences and be open to hearing and experiencing someone else's life through the good, the bad, and the ugly.
