Kaira is in the kind of trouble it would take Jess and the Wanderer to fix, but they’ve been gone for a thousand years. What she gets is Tarkus and the Glimmer, a rundown ship and a taciturn captain who doesn’t even know she’s stowed away. Yet.
If she’s lucky Tarkus will throw her off at the next station if he finds her. If she’s unlucky she’ll be ejected into in cold space without a suit. If there were any other options she’d take them.
There aren’t. All she can do is huddle in the darkened hold and hope the Glimmer gets her where she needs to go before her world caves in… and before Tarkus realises she’s there.
This story takes place 1000 years after Jess and The Wanderer sacrificed themselves to get rid of the Limited. However, this story is about a 17 year old girl, Kaira, and a cranky old space pilot, Tarkus, and his ship called The Glimmer.
There are some progressive revelations as the story goes on. The clues are there that hint why this book is in the Wanderer series, but nothing it expressly said. The plot has a discontinuity in it, meaning a part of it doesn’t fit well with the rest of the story. Read it and find out for yourself. There are two twists that take place toward the end that change the dynamics, so that was of some interest. There is some mystery as to why Tarkus has a double locked set of doors to his private compartment, and there is a section of the ship sort of hidden behind a wall. Neither is explained, just mentioned as a teaser.
The story is mostly about the bonding of Kaira and Tarkus and their journey through space to Crasant. Stopping at some spots along the way offered a change of pace, and going in and out of jump space had it issues as well. Of course, there are few bad actors along the way that need to be taken care of. All in all, of every book in the series, this one was the weakest in my estimation.
Other than that, the 7th book in the story takes place 1000 years after the disappearance of Wanderer and Jess, which except for a brief event seems completely irrelevant. The disruption in Jump Space that Wanderer caused continues to make travel difficult for spanning long ranges most effectively. One pilot seems to be able to find his way through these areas to his advantage and can move much faster than conventional "safe" travel. His ship has been boarded by a stow-away who provides a reason for a particularly risky trip. I hold a glimmer of hope that the 8th book resolves the very rude abrupt end.
This episode branches off from the primary adventures of Wanderer, Jess and Ali and starts afresh with Tarkus , his ship Glimmer and stowaway Kaira, 1000 years in the future. There is also a subtle mystery about Tarkus’s wife, dead for 9 years. I guess there will be a connection to all the characters in the next book.
I found book 7 disappointing, sort of going to a James Bond 007 movie and not seeing him. Sorry Simon, only a generous 4 this time. I hope the tangle is brilliantly sorted in book 8. Perhaps Kaira is Wanderers new pilot? …Adrian
