This is the second book in a series (first book: First Apple) about Yeung Ying, a young girl in rural China in the late 1940's. The details of her daily life fascinated me. I really can't imagine myself eating fish heads and fish guts, but to each his own. I especially enjoyed this one because Ying's family and friends misunderstand her motives for doing the strange but kind deed toward the end of the book. Even though everyone around her thought she did something crazy or stupid, because she felt good inside doing it, she knew she had done the right thing. Rather than explain herself, she remains silent. Very nice. Can't wait to read the third book now!
